たまたま私が同窓会で東京にくる予定があったんで、お義母さんが立て替えたロームシェアの滞納分全部支払って、頭下げて謝罪して。まったく、いつかこういうことになると思ってたんですよ。この人、自分で稼ぐ気な全然なくてお金に意地汚くて、だらしなくて。いいですか、絶対に返してもらいますからね」
テーブルの上には「借用書」と書かれた紙が置かれていた。
「ちゃんっと働いて返してくださいよ。まったく、なんで私が義理の兄のためにここまでしないといけないんだか！」
「あの、どうしここがわかったんですか」か細い声で白羽さんが言う。私は、白羽さんの「隠してほしい」と言うのは家賃を払わないで逃げているから、という意味も会ったのだろうかと思った。
白羽さんの質問に、義妹は鼻で笑って言った。
「前にもお義兄さん、家賃を滞納して実家までお金を借りにきたことがあったでしょ。あの時、こんなことになる気がして、旦那に頼んでお義兄さんの携帯に追跡アプリ入れてもらってたんですよ。だからここにいることはわかってたんで、コンビニに出かけたところを捕まえたんです」

It just so happened that I had plans to come to Tokyo for a class reunion, so I paid all the overdue rent for the shared housing that my mother-in-law had covered in advance. I bowed my head and apologized. Honestly, I had a feeling something like this would happen someday. This person has no intention of earning money themselves, they're extremely stingy with money, and they're so irresponsible. Please understand that I absolutely expect them to pay it back."

There was a piece of paper on the table with "Loan Agreement" written on it.

"Please work diligently and pay it back. Honestly, why do I have to go this far for my brother-in-law?"
「あの、どうしてここがわかったんですか」と細い声で白羽さんが言う。私は、白羽さんの「隠してほしい」と言うのは家賃を払わないで逃げているから、という意味も含まれているのだろうかと思った。
"Um, how did you find out about this place?" Shiraha-san asked in a quiet voice. I wondered if Shiraha-san's question also meant that he wanted to keep it a secret because he had fled without paying the rent.
白羽さんの質問に、義妹は鼻で笑って言った。
In response to Shiraha-san's question, his sister-in-law chuckled and said, "Well..."
「前にもお義兄さん、家賃を滞納して実家までお金を借りにきたことがあったでしょ。あの時、こんなことになる気がして、旦那に頼んでお義兄さんの携帯に追跡アプリ入れてもらってたんですよ。だからここにいることはわかってたんで、コンビニに出かけたところを捕まえたんです」
"Remember, my brother-in-law came to our parents' house once before, asking for money because he couldn't pay the rent, right? At that time, I had a feeling something like this might happen, so I asked my husband to install a tracking app on his phone. That's how we knew he was here, and we caught him when he went to the convenience store."
