私は皿を出してテーブルに並べた。茹でた野菜に醤油をかけたものと、炊いた来だ。
白羽さんは顔をしかめた。
「これは何ですか？」
「大根と、もやして、じゃがいもと、お米です」
「いつもこんなものをたべているんですか？」
「こんなもの？」
「料理じゃないじゃないですか？」
「私は食材に火を通して食べます。特に味は必要ないのですが、塩分が欲しくなると醤油をかけます」
丁寧に説明したが、白羽さんには理解ができないようだった。嫌嫌、口に運びながら、「餌だな」と吐き捨てるように言った。
だからそう言っているのに、と思いながら、私は大根をフォークで刺して、口に運んだ。
ほとんど、詐欺師をそれとわかっていて家に住回せるような感覚で白羽さんを（１１２）家に置き始めた私だが、意外と、白羽さんのいうことは当たっていた。

I set the plates on the table. It was boiled vegetables with soy sauce and rice.
白羽さんは顔をしかめた。
Shiraha-san frowned.
「これは何ですか？」
"What is this?"
「大根と、もやして、じゃがいもと、お米です」
"It's daikon radish, sprouts, potatoes, and rice."
「いつもこんなものをたべているんですか？」
"Do you always eat things like this?"
「こんなもの？」
"Things like this?"
「料理じゃないじゃないですか？」
"This isn't a meal, is it?"
「私は食材に火を通して食べます。特に味は必要ないのですが、塩分が欲しくなると醤油をかけます」
"I eat by cooking the ingredients. I don't particularly need flavors, but when I crave some saltiness, I add soy sauce."
丁寧に説明したが、白羽さんには理解ができないようだった。
I explained politely, but it seemed that Shiraha-san couldn't understand.
嫌嫌、口に運びながら、「餌だな」と吐き捨てるように言った。
With a grimace, Shiraha-san muttered, "It's like animal feed," while eating.
だからそう言っているのに、と思いながら、私は大根をフォークで刺して、口に運んだ。
So even though I thought that's what he was saying, I pierced a piece of daikon with a fork and put it in my mouth.

I had started to let Shiraha-san stay at my place with a feeling like I was housing a scammer, even though I knew it. Surprisingly, what Shiraha-san was saying turned out to be accurate.
