翌日目が覚めると、白羽さんは押し入れに不半身を突込むような状態で眠っており、私が風呂に入っても目を覚まさなかった。
「出ていくなら鍵はポストにお願いします」
そう書き置きを残し、私はいつも通り８時に店に着くよう出勤した。私の家にいるのは本意ではない、というような口ぶりだったのでもういないだろうと思ったが、帰ると、白羽さんはまだ部屋にいた。
何をするでもなく、折り畳み式のテーブルに肘をついて、白ぶどうサイダーのヘコ缶を飲んでいる。
「まだいたんですね」
声をかけると、びくりと身体を揺らした。
「はあ。。。」
「今日一日、妹からのメールが凄かったんです。妹が私に関することでこんなにはしゃいでるのを初めて見ました」
「そりゃあ、そうですよ。処女のまま中古になった女がいい歳してコンビニのアルバイしているより、男と同棲でもしてくれた方がずっと的もだって妹さんも思ってるってことですよ」

The next day when I woke up, Shiraha-san was still sleeping in a cramped position inside the closet, and he didn't wake up even when I took a bath.

"If you're leaving, please leave the key in the mailbox," I left a note like that and headed to work as usual, arriving at the store at 8 o'clock. Even though he had spoken as if being at my house wasn't his intention, I thought he would have left by now, but when I returned, Shiraha-san was still in the room.

He was sitting at the folding table, leaning his elbows on it, and drinking a dented can of white grape cider without doing anything in particular.
「まだいたんですね」
"You're still here?" I spoke to him, and he startled.
「はあ。。。」
"Haa..."
「今日一日、妹からのメールが凄かったんです。妹が私に関することでこんなにはしゃいでるのを初めて見ました」
"Today, I received a ton of messages from my sister. It's the first time I've seen her so excited about something related to me."
「そりゃあ、そうですよ。処女のまま中古になった女がいい歳してコンビニのアルバイしているより、男と同棲でもしてくれた方がずっと的もだって妹さんも思ってるってことですよ」
"Well, of course. Your sister probably thinks it's much better for you to live with a man at your age than working part-time at a convenience store as a woman who's remained 'unused'."
