Ep 305Property Market in Serious Condition / News of the Money-World Ep 57

The OCR increase of 0.75% may very much be required in order to save us from inflation. The property market may not be able to sustain price levels due not just to the bit of our RBNZ, but also their bark. Our central bank is determined to throw overboard anything it needs to in this battle, including the property market but ultimately, the economy. Whatever it takes to to maintain their credibility and retain our confidence, in their ability to stabilize the system after their jelly fish monetary intervention in the last couple years.___________________News of the Money-World! Ep 304Precious Metals: For Wealth, Ep 304

For thousands and thousands of years we’ve used gold as money. At some stage, whether part of the role out of CBDC’s (Central Bank Digital Currency) or something else, odds are high gold may form the base of a new global reserve currency. Russia, China and others are working on a new currency to trade with, and central banks are gobbling up new supply of gold at a rate not seen since 1967. It could be tempting to think gold will spike in value denominated in USD, but you also have to consider what value the USD has in this scenario too. Getting the ‘what’, the ‘how’ and the ‘when' right, are all needed for this to be a good speculative bet. I'd be cautious here. There’s no guarantee in that future there would even be a marketplace for gold outside of central banks. So is gold going to be useful here for when the train runs out of track? Rich Elliott and Chris Howard are my special guests today, from MyGold.Hey! Ep 302OCR and FTX updates / News of the Money-World Ep 56

There's nothing more annoying than just the news. So here's the news the news first, for what it's worth, the OCR has increased by 0.75%. We are now at a level we haven't been since around 2008.Why is the OCR important? This 'official' interest rate that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand sets, indirectly influences the costs of money to the banks we the people borrow from. It's an important thing, because if interest rates increase, two things happen...(Read More Here)___________________News of the Money-World! Ep 298Michael Every: Mercantilism And The New Order, Ep 298

Michael Every joins me in this episode. He's the global strategist for Rabobank.Today I've learnt A LOT from this discussion, including why Central Banks worldwide have taken a keen interest in the environment, and Central Bank Digital Currencies recently.Programmable currency can ensure capital and resource is directed towards green infrastructure projects. Assuming the currency is linked to a common objective of a large trading block (say Europe, North America, Australia and NZ?), you now have an idea of what could make a new base for a common currency.A CBDC backed by carbon? It's hard to say if that plays out, but either way it means the shift towards this transformation could come at the cost of producing goods and services for consumption. If the supply side falls, higher interest rates have to beat down consumer demand even further. In other words, under this hypothetical scenario – things get really expensive for you and me, and our standard of living for the first time in a long time, may broadly decline.Still, we'll likely do it for a good cause...CBDC’s. Previously known as a solution looking for a problem, now appear to have a purpose in the green transition. A common digital currency, working towards a common objective of controlling our environment: We've arrived in Oceania about 40 years late._________________News of the Money-World LIVE is happening on the 24th of November. Ep 297Breaking Crypto / News of the Money-World Ep 54

So if you do own crypto and more specifically Bitcoin, you may be tempted to throw in thetowel at times – this could be one of them times. I’ve been reminding myself about a couple things on this: Investing 'success' must have a lot to do with our ability to make decisions we can stick too. And the next thing, is that it’s almost always the hands that hold this asset that causes the risk, rarely the asset itself.______________News of the Money-World LIVE is happening on the 24th of November. Ep 296Bonds: Wrong Type of Risk, Wrong Time, Ep 296

It's at least a theory or at best, mere speculation, that we're already in a new regime, where bonds don't provide the same value in a balanced portfolio. A lot of things don’t work quite the way they normally would have in the past. I guess what’s good about this for the everyday investor keen to push forward with a bit more understanding - given the amount of change afoot, don't worry if you don't have a degree in this stuff already. You could skip the formal education and to be honest, it may make it easier.Central Banks and/or government, have created so many distortions with their interventions, that multiple patches are starting to rip at the seems. Personally, I can’t believe how far something that that can go on for, before things start to break. Then again, perhaps it’s always been broken, and that’s why it kind of why it works (and will always likely work). Both shares, and bonds have been declining at the same time though. That’s not suppose to happen.Check out the remainder of this article Greg Fleming is Head of Global Diversified Funds with Salt Funds, an Auckland based Investment manager. is https://www.saltfunds.co.nz/Check out the Sorted website for more info on bondsHey! Was it really a crisis though? Well it could have been - now it appears energy supplies are 'good enough' to get through what would have otherwise been a winter from hell.Is this an example of how the media can lead us down the wrong path around items to worry about? Possibly. Are European's safe now? No necessarily - there's still next winter to think about.Active investors need to watch this, passive investors - not so much. What's the lesson here? Ep 291Monetary-Diarrhoea/ News of the Money-World Ep #51

News of the Money-World is a joint show between NZ Everyday Investor and koura KiwiSaver. None of this is financial advice, and remember these opinions don't necessarily contain a full load of truth. Please do your own research.Hey guess what - we're doing an event for all our lovely News of the Money-World audience. We'd love to meet you, feed you, share a drink and have a chat. We'll have 4 speakers, music, and some pretty cool prizes to give away too. It's all happening on the 24th of November.Numbers are pretty limited so if you can do it, BUY TICKETS NOW!FYI: Tickets aren't free, but it's all going to charity anyway. __________________Google tells us that Diarrhoea a condition in which faeces are discharged from the bowels frequently and in a liquid form.Monetary - Diarrhoea is what happens when the global banking system can't keep it in any longer. "a range of symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting" Google reveals a nuance yet again. Diarrhoea begets more Diarrhoea. As the supply of money rises, the global financial system needs more new money just to keep it together, which in turn, requires more money creation to occur. If not assets, then something else. It's a bit weird how it all works to be honest. But it's probably nothing.Right now, just because interest rates are high and banks are slamming on the breaks. It doesn't mean the money printers been turned off. No no no. It's just facing another direction. War is expensive, re-building's expensive, getting off fossil fuels... phew!Is it possible interest rates will continue to rise and stay elevated for years? I wouldn't bet on it. Inevitably, asset values will once again be the sponge to soak up new currency creation. The largest ponzi-scheme of all time is far too big to fail. It's not over yet, the show must go on.Hey! Ep 290Commercial Property Investment Foundations, Ep 290

There are different types of commercial property investment: Direct, syndicated, un-listed, listed, managed funds, and index funds. On top of that, you have various subsets within the commercial property sector, all with their unique set of pro's and con's to consider. For those who seek either the chance to influence value, or a great source of cashflow in retirement, commercial property should be considered.Note this episode is a re-edited version of episode 80, where I had Brandon Wilcox and Jack Revill on to discuss commercial property. Next week I have Carl Burling and Jack Revill on (again) to discuss 'what's next' for commercial property. Investing in un-listed funds of all sorts can be part of a valid investment portfolio. Just like any one of your components [be it property, individual shares, and even cash], you have to accept a set of known, and unknown risks in order to obtain the return you seek. The disclosure rules are a little less prescribed with un-listed companies though. This may increase the odds you haven't had an opportunity to perform due diligence (relative to say, shares in Air NZ for example). Provincia offers un-listed shares in a commercial property fund, and they're currently seeking funds. Please do your own due diligence and seek advice from an accountant, lawyer, or financial adviser, if you require sign-off for becoming an 'eligible' investor (as per the following rules).Hey! Ep 288SOUND Money for an UNSOUND World / Aditya Das, Ep. 288

We're living in very UNSOUND times. Geo-politically, but also financially this is true right now. In order to build new wealth for the new world, we need to consider new containers for this wealth. Ethereum, and other Web-3 digital assets MAY provide an option for open-minded everyday investor. There are 3 things we can do now, to ensure we’re building wealth the new world at a rate which is greater than the effects of inflation, or currency debasement:1 – We can invest more2 – We can take higher risk3 – Or we can keep an open mindI’ve met few who do all three. It’s not uncommon to see some invest a lot, or take a lot of risk, often without realising it, but it’s the open mind bit that's rare – quite clearly the world’s going through some sort of phase transition right now, yet out minds are still in yesterdays thinking in so many areas. Ethereum is one of the digital assets that I personally hold in my own portfolio. I don't personally, or professionally endorse more than a relatively small allocation to this high risk, yet promising new asset class. Take care to conduct your own due diligence and (ideally) seek advice from a financial adviser prior to making any serious investment in crypto-currencies.My guest today is Aditya Das, Blockchain Researcher and Investment Analyst with Brave New Coin. koura KiwiSaver and NZ Everyday Investor present, News of the Money-World. Governments and central banks should be independent. This is my default belief, as it is with most who worry that the right thing to do, could yield to the popular thing to do. Ep 284Property Market: MORE Troubles Ahead? Ep 284

Just like many central banks around the world, New Zealand’s Reserve Bank, is making the cost of money higher to combat inflation by adjusting the OCR, the official cash rate. When this happens, our homes, our next home, share portfolio, managed funds, property or crypto portfolio – rising interest rates apply downward pressure on their value.Today, my guest Jarrod Kerr, chief economist at Kiwibank talks to me about some of the signs and symptoms of an economic sickness that households, the economy, and the worldwide economy is going through right now. If we can understand the environment our property lives in a bit more, we should have a clearer picture on what comes next for house prices. Hey!
