He lost the love and the drive to grind and new he wasn’t the player he wanted to be. For Gil, this hit close to home... He’d known DJ and his dad Darryl for years in the Valley AAU scene. He’d watched DJ grow into a score first, aggressive guard with a promising future. Gil worked with DJ over the years and was on top of his progression. So we sat down with DJ in the summer of 2020 when he was at his basketball crossroads. You’ll find out just how down he was and pretty much checked out. Fast forward to this year and made his way to Colorado Christian and has been producing at a high clip. He re-dedicated his craft and rekindled his love to hoop. Fresh off of a Final Four run with the University of Houston, AAC Conference Player of the Year, Quentin Grimes is heading to the league and rising up draft boards. His training partner, the lefty bucket getter from Mississippi State, DJ Stewart is quickly moving from under the radar to head turner. As part of their draft prep, the two have paired to train together and made their way to LA to get some time with Coach Arenas. For Gil, beyond the evaluation and the skill work, he wanted to see where their heads were at. It’s not a question of how, it’s when. So many prospects go through the process, so Gil’s approach is to have an approach. Don’t be cookie cutter, unless you’re a cookie cutter player. On this episode, the postseason is upon us and this year, we’re looking to shuffle up the deck. It started out with a play-in tournament that needs some explaining. On this episode, what do you get when you have college friends, teammates, rivals, NBA stars and lifelong jokesters? You have Richard Jefferson and Gil’s 20+ year friendship. Since meeting as AAU players, to a recruitment trip that almost made the whole thing fall apart, Gil and Richard have been going tit-for-tat for a long time. If one sets the bar, the other not only raises it, but makes it unreachable. For Gil, this comes from a genuine bond with Richard, not just from talent on the basketball court, but connecting as personalities. As Richard’s career showed us, he was a great athlete, a high flyer and an excellent teammate. Just like Gil, he had fun with it, but when it was game time, he was all the way locked in. For the both of them, that was the bond at Arizona, and coming from an ultra talented squad, they were able to stand out at the next level in the NBA. On this episode, we’re circling back a moment in basketball that propelled us to where the game is today. At the time, Brandon Jennings went from Oak Hill Academy to the Euroleauge, it was a move that puzzled and surprised many. Instead of going the college route, one of the top prospects in his class, Brandon knew he had the pro makeup, so he went overseas to make it happen. When he was drafted number ten overall in 2009, he entered the league with a year of pro experience under his belt and some money in his pocket. For Gil, Brandon was always that exceptional player who could score at will, a shoot first point guard and a shot creator, but he also had the vision to go against the grain. At the time the move made headlines, and only a few players followed suit. But as we’re seeing now, a pathway has been made where they don’t need to depend the college system to progress their careers. As for Brandon, enough time as gone by to look back at that chapter in his life with recognition for what he accomplished and where it took him to next.
