Diets are one of the most problematic and disturbing traps of beauty culture. As we head into this new year and consider what our resolutions might be, I want to address this topic and my own relationship and awareness around dieting growing up. Meal planning, cutting sugar, tracking calories, cutting carbs — all of it is a slippery slope towards an unhealthy and unsustainable relationship with food. After spending an incredible seven weeks in Turkey this past summer with Mavi, my husband, and his family, I knew that I had to share my experience with the Naked Beauty community. As a beauty lover, foodie, and Black woman who has married into this culture, Turkey has become like a second home to me and a place that I believe is so often misunderstood.
