Myth of the 20th Century

As the ongoing Iran-Israel crisis continues into its third week of 2026, with tentative peace terms quickly being dashed by missile strikes from both sides and the US military floating the idea of sending ground forces into Iran, the price of Brent crude oil has nearly doubled and remained elevated as the Straights of Hormuz remain impeded, shutting off over 20% of the worlds petroleum supply. But whether this gets resolved in two months or two years, the long term ramifications are profound: American military hegemony is in deep question as an aircraft carrier withdraws from battle and the supposedly invisible F-35 was hit by a missile strike. American economic power linked to military prowess in the Gulf region via the petrodollar is again in doubt, and sovereignty of the very government which oversees this is in question as the repeated manipulations of Washington by the foreign power of Israel is on course to mark its 25th consecutive year at least since 9/11/2001. I was at church the other day. For the past two years that hasn’t been unusual. But what struck me was how leaden the message from the pastor felt. As American and Israeli bombs rained down on Iranian targets - including their supreme leader and a now confirmed schoolhouse for girls - we in the church pews were told America is the richest country in the world, and how we were chosen to serve others - in our community and outside of it. After service, struggling with my difficultly in giving aid to enemies and lobbing missiles at people I don’t consider my enemy while our country has the largest national debt in its history, I spoke to an older gentleman of the Boomer generation whom I’m friends with there. Sharing some of my concerns, we empathized over frustration with our government’s leadership given our shared experience seeing the Iraq and now Iran war, and his in Vietnam. We shook hands and parted ways, but what remains with me was the disconnect I feel from this older generation that many in mine are expressing now. Because of this a recent article by Billionaire Psycho on the Boomer Question resonated with me, and I will read it to you with his permission as part of a special episode on the current state of this nation. We live in extremely troubling times, with a leadership class seemingly incapable of understanding the needs of the people - especially of younger generations - and possibly leading us into a third world war. On February 28th, 2026, the US and Israel launched over 900 air strikes on Iranian air defense and missile sites, after weeks of military buildups in the region, and at the time of this publication has escalated to over 2,000 individual targets struck in the past few days within Iran. Among the casualties was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and in retaliation Iran launched drone and missile attacks against Tel Aviv and cities and US military bases in the surrounding Gulf States. Opinion around the world was extremely mixed, with many Iranian expats cheering the move, hoping for a return of the Shah, while many others condemned the attacks as flagrant aggression. It has now been over 80 years since the end of World War II, and at least 50 years since the concept of the Holocaust has entered the mainstream discourse. Prior to the 1980s and even into the 1990s, Canada represented one of the final frontiers in Western Civilization, relatively untouched by globalization owing to a harsh climate and rugged landscape, geographically isolating it from trade and migration outside of with the United States. In the aftermath of the United States’ removal of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro on January 3rd, 2026, the world is rife with speculation as to the reasons for the operation, ranging from oil politics, drug interdiction, and broader geopolitical rivalries between the United States and the coalition of global superpowers in the BRICS alliance. Following a wild election in 2024, which included an assassination attempt on then candidate and now President Donald Trump, 2025 was bound to be controversial. Realizing the fears and hopes of millions, the United States began enforcing its borders again, and enacting trade tariffs designed to shore up is dwindling manufacturing base. Geopolitically, attempts were made to wind down the Ukraine war, but other conflicts flared up between India and Pakistan and Iran and Israel. Domestically, the economy continued to hum along on the back of a now extended AI boom, but many people found basic housing unaffordable, and tensions grew as Charlie Kirk was assassinated in front a live audience of students, and citizen journalists showed how complicit and incompetent governments were from the fires in California to the massive fraud in Somalian daycares stealing billions from American taxpayers. Trump’s MAGA, while quick to act in the first 90 days domestically, was slow to respond to many of these real concerns of Americans, and further alienated its base as the administration engaged in two unauthorized attacks on the Iranian nuclear facilities and later on Venezuelan shipping and its president. In 1980, the median priced home in the United States was equivalent to 3 years of the median annual salary. In 2023, this had risen to 6 years - an effective doubling of real home prices. Despite attempts at lowering interest rates in the past year, wages have not kept up with housing costs, and many Americans are struggling to buy their first home, with almost 20% of Millennials living with their parents today, up from around 10% for young adults in the 1970s. During the first and second world wars, Spain remained neutral and largely unscathed by the fighting. Over the course of WWII, the United States, having no territory attacked or taken save a few islands in the Pacific, managed to supply nearly 50% of Britain’s food, almost all of its petroleum, and upwards of 40% of various strategic raw materials and food stuffs the Soviet Union needed in their respective fights with Nazi Germany. This program, authorized almost a year before the attacks on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese in late 1941, was entitled Lend-Lease, and by the end of the war funneled 90% of its budget of war material towards the European Theatre - despite America not having been attacked by a European power. In 1967, director Kihachi Okamoto released the film ‘Japan’s Longest Day’, depicting the pivotal 24 hours the government debated if they would accept the Allies’ terms for surrender in 1945. For context, the movie summarizes Japan’s point of view: “for the first seven months of the war Japan was overwhelmingly dominant. In the blink of an eye, the Imperial Forces gained complete ascendancy in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and projected their immense military might as far south as Australia. But in the Pacific Theatre, a crucial strategic battle was lost at Midway. From that day forward the power of the Imperial Forces gradually began to wane. It became impossible to maintain the strength of the front-line troops. Eventually, the island of Okinawa was lost to the Allies. B29’s flew from bases at Tinian and Saipan and dropped bombs on 92 cities, starting with Tokyo, reducing them to smoldering plains of rubble. Munitions factories were destroyed one after another. 3,600,000 soldiers had been killed or wounded in the war. 1,470,000 civilians had suffered death or injury at home. The victims of the war, on all sides, exceeded 10,000,000. Japan’s days as a conquering nation were numbered. Plans for the so-called “Operation Olympic” which called for deploying a million Allied troops on Japanese soil were well underway. And according to the Japanese Minister of Agriculture and Commerce Ishiguro, the forecast for Autumn 1945 was the worst harvest since 1931. Except for our farmers, most Japanese are on the brink of death from starvation. Japan has no strength to continue the fight! As a last resort, an Imperial Council was held in which they asked the Emperor himself to decide the matter. At the end of the meeting, the Emperor made the following judgment: “To continue the war any further would be to send the people of our nation to their deaths. In the final year of WWII, the overwhelming weight of the Allied assault on the Third Reich brought into full focus the severity of Germany’s situation. From the east, the Red Army went from recapturing Soviet territory to advancing into Axis countries. From the west, the successful American and British landings at Normandy help prompt a failed coup attempt on Hitler’s life a month later, and from the air German cities continued to be incinerated - military and civilian populations alike. In 1944, the western and eastern fronts began collapsing on the German Reich, following the capitulation of its ally Italy in 1943 and the successful landing of Allied forces in France in June, 1944. In terms of production, the Allies already outstripped Germany 4 to 1, and with the Wehrmacht allocating upwards of 80% of its men and materiel to the defense against the Red Army in the east, the West Wall remained relatively unprotected. After storming through the Normandy beaches and breaking through the Bocage hedgerows of France, it was this progress and numerical superiority that led the US military into a false sense of security as they entered German land. At the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest in late 1944, the US Army suffered its greatest defeat in terms of loss of life at over 30,000 men killed, and failed to achieve its strategic objective. Often forgotten in history books, this failure was quickly overshadowed by the larger Battle of the Bulge to the south, yet nonetheless offers lessons on mistakes in strategic command. In the minds of many Americans - arguably owing to the canonization of D-Day by Hollywood movies - the battle to take Europe from the Germans began in earnest on June 6th, 1944, when American, British, and Canadian troops successfully established a beachhead on French soil for the first time after the Reich's takeover of France in 1940. But to the Germans, and almost certainly to the Soviets, who had been fighting ferociously in the East for 3 years to the tune of over 10-15 million dead, the Normandy landings were a footnote in much greater civilization struggle. Throughout history, man has fought and died on the battlefield of war. Civilian non-combatants, if affected, were subject to siege, depredations and pillage - but rarely faced the same level of slaughter as their front line compatriots. In 480BC at the Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas led a valiant defense of Sparta with a contingent of 300 men against the overwhelmingly numerically superior Persian army, tens of thousands of whom the Spartans and Greek allies killed in the 3 day struggle. While the ultimate outcome of Thermopylae was a tactical defeat and loss of life for the defenders, the fact that they held off such a force for as long as they did inspired the entire Greek world, calling up the courage and bravery of more men to ultimately end the Persian invasion for good. Much of WWII history revolves around the major powers and conflict zones of Northern Europe and East Asia. As the European powers emerged from World War I and the Great Depression, Japan faced its own challenges on the Pacific Rim. Aiming to build a power base independent of the imperial powers of Britain, France, Russia and the United States encroaching on China and the surrounding nations over the past century, Japan had embarked on an industrial and military modernization program that resulted in a series of victories in Korea and modern day northern China. Noticing the economic success and rapid military conquests of Nazi Germany in 1940, Tokyo also signed the Tripartite Pact with Berlin and Rome, and with permission from German-controlled Vichy France, occupied French Indochina. Observing Japan's territory expanding dangerously close to its concessions in the Philippines, the United States embargoed all oil shipments to Japan in July 1941, effectively crippling Tokyo's supply, particularly for its navy. Feeling cornered, Japan embarked on its 'Southern Expansion' strategy, aimed at seizing the oil fields in the Dutch East Indies and simultaneously striking the British and American fleets in Singapore and Pearl Harbor. Although Japan made rapid progress in early 1942, by missing the US aircraft carrier fleet and underestimating the determination of the Americans, in the words of Admiral Yamamoto, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." As the summer of 1941 approached, the geopolitical map of the world hinged around three main power blocs: the Anglo-American alliance, the Soviet Union, and the nascent but growing empires of the fascist world. Having witnessed the rapid expansion of Nazi Germany into occupying France, Norway, the low countries and portions of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union for its part in 1940 annexed sections of Finland in a short but brutal war, went on to take Bessarabia from Romania, and then finally the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Bound together in a non-aggression pact signed in 1939, Hitler and Stalin eyed each other suspiciously, and Germany and Soviet spies were looking for signs of the other’s preparedness to strike. Hitler went first. On June 22nd, 1941, the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa, the largest land invasion in history, aimed squarely at Moscow. Initially planned for six months in a hoped for decapitating blow on the Red Army, the Wehrmacht made tremendous strides through the Soviet hinterland, nearing its capital by the end of fall. As Moscow appeared in the distance, however, and the Russian winter began, comparisons to Napoleon’s ill fated invasion of Russia over 100 years prior started. Unlike the French army, who lasted less than six months, the Germans stayed in Russia for nearly 4 years, engaging in the bloodiest conflicts of the war and in human history, which took over 30 million lives - and reshaping the geopolitical landscape ever since.NOTE: This was recorded in two parts because of the scale and magnitude of this topic. After jointly declaring war on Germany in September, 1939 and with France capitulating in June, 1940, Great Britain stood alone in its quest to subdue Nazi Germany and prevent its emerging continental empire from eclipsing Britain’s global one. Winston Churchill in particular proved decisive in refusing peace offers from Adolf Hitler, and despite protests from his cabinet, gambled the British Empire on maintaining their vital military and supply lines with the United States while under aerial bombardment during the ‘Blitz’ and losing millions of tons of shipping to the Kriegsmarine. The World at War series highlights the losses the British suffered from German bombers, but by the end of the war the Royal Air Force managed to incinerate over 480,000 German citizens in night time raids, approximately 10 times the amount the Luftwaffe killed over the British Isles. On June 21st, 2025, the United States launched a series of air strikes on Iranian installations allegedly containing facilities and equipment designed for building weapons grade nuclear material. The strikes follow a series of missile exchanges between Tel Aviv and Tehran over the past few weeks, which again follow a long standing series of proxy wars, sabotage and assassinations going back decades between Israel and Iran. Apart from economic sanctions, however, the direct military bombardment of Iran by the United States as a proxy for Israel is new, and raises alarms not only on the side already critical of the Trump Administration, but also within his own party and broader constituency. The 20th century war between the Western European powers, which began in earnest in 1914 and halted after four bloody years of fighting, resumed again officially in 1939. Following the swift occupation of Poland by Germany and the USSR, Britain and France declared war on Germany, but limited their actual fighting to leafleting and a few naval skirmishes. In May, 1940, however, Germany broke the deadlock and invaded France through the low countries and forced Paris to capitulate in 5 short weeks. On May 10th, 2025, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, brokered by the United States, after weeks of fighting in one of the bitterest military exchanges in years. This followed an attack on Indian tourists in the disputed region of Kashmir where Pakistani militants executed 26 Indian civilians, and follows decades of border skirmishes and conflicts that has never fully abated since the two countries’ bloody separation in the aftermath of India’s independence from the British Empire. On April 2nd, 2025, The Trump Administration announced what they called ‘Liberation Day’ for Americans. Rather than a reference to an occupation from a kinetic war, the White House was referring to liberation from a sociopolitical regime waging an economic war. The announcement focused on a series of tariffs designed to redress serious trade imbalances in manufactured goods with countries around the world, particularly in Asia and Europe. The next morning, almost without hesitation, the US stock markets plummeted, followed by another drop of over 5% the next day. Almost as quickly, many on the right and people ostensibly aligned with the Trump campaign came out condemning the tariffs, calling them ill founded and poorly executed. With the recent fires in Los Angeles capturing international headlines, with some estimates placing the property damage above that of Hurricane Katrina, America’s previous record holder for natural disasters, discussion is returning to the competency crisis in our elected officials and government services provided by the likes of FEMA, which have been slow to respond and ineffective to act over the past several years. In 2024, when Hurricane Helene slammed into parts of Appalachia leaving entire towns flooded and cut off, officials did little to mitigate the problem - to the point where in some cases government agents were actively obstructing private relief efforts. Plutarch, who lived in a Greek province during the height of the Roman Empire, is widely regarded for his biographies of great leaders in the ancient world. In his work on Tiberius Gracchus, a Roman politician killed for his advocacy of land reform, Plutarch wrote, “The rich men of the neighborhood contrived to get these lands again into their possession, under other people's names, and at last would not stick to claim most of them publicly in their own. The poor, who were thus deprived of their farms, were no longer either ready, as they had formerly been, to serve in war or careful in the education of their children; insomuch that in a short time there were comparatively few freemen remaining in all Italy, which swarmed with workhouses full of foreign-born slaves. Legend has it that before setting out for the Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914, Ernest Shackleton posted an ad in a London newspaper proclaiming, "Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." If there is a parallel to the audacity of a leader in the 21st century, it has to be Elon Musk. On December 10th, 1993, Id Software released the video game Doom, unleashing a wave of digital monsters on millions of plasma rifle wielding gamers eagerly awaiting this genre-piercing work of action horror. Considered the Godfather of first-person shooters, the game inspired hundreds of imitators in this category over the years, propelled by advances in graphics cards driving sales of the latest PC hardware by enthusiasts seeking to obliterate their opponents in the new multiplayer concept of ‘deathmatches’ more quickly and in full 3D glory. Computing has come a long way since the early days of Doom’s DOS based experience, going so far as to have playable levels automatically generated by artificial intelligence. On the morning of May 20th, 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from Long Island, New York in a plane he helped design on the first successful solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. 33 hours later, after braving 3,600 miles over ice cold water and bone chilling fog in the North Atlantic, Lindbergh touched down in Paris, France to cheering crowds. Upon his return to the United States, over 4 million people in a jubilant crowd attended his parade, just to get a glimpse of their hero. Like his father before him, Charles saw the devastating effect the First World War had on Europe, and with war clouds returning to the continent by the 1930s, Lindbergh sought to keep America out of the conflict. His movement, called ‘America First’, saw many of the forces behind calls to bring the American arsenal to bear in Europe to have little resemblance to the common people of the country, whom they asked to bear the brunt of the sacrifice, and in citing these forces, brought out a barrage of censorship, criticism and job losses to many of his supporters. This seemingly confirmed Lindbergh’s suspicions of the pernicious motives of the Second World War, and the courage to speak out in many ways paralleled what it took to cross the Atlantic a decade prior. As technology has advanced throughout human history, societies have adapted their way of life to try to incorporate the advantages offered while limiting the consequences. The automobile for example freed people from the limited range and unpredictable nature of the horse, but also created a need for traffic safety laws and research into pollution controls. Similarly with biotechnology and genetic engineering, the promise of curing disease motivates many to continue research, but the demonstrated and potential consequences of genetic abnormalities and eugenic warfare make this technology a power that may not be best left to the creative classes and better kept under close scrutiny if allowed at all. The world has rarely seen a time where two powers dominate the entire globe - almost utterly and completely - like in the latter half of the 20th Century with the United States and the Soviet Union, as our guest Thomas777 tonight points out. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, it also became easy to feel like the era of major global conflict was over, and forget just how deadly and potentially catastrophic with nuclear weapons the preceding eras had become. During the post World War II era, with the Axis powers having been thoroughly defeated, the (former) allies, replete with their battle tested armies and massive armaments and industrial bases, aligned against each other into capitalist and communist blocs. With the stakes never before this high, and the entire world hoping to avoid another cataclysmic 100 million dead, the United States began funding think tanks to come up with ways to do this - most notably at the RAND Corporation. During their early years, and up until the height of the Cold War, RAND attracted thousands of famous and highly influential intellects from the fields of physics, mathematics, statistics, economics and more, many of who went on to win Nobel prizes, focusing on war strategy, production planning, and predictive modeling of adversaries using theoretical and computerized simulations.
