Wall Street has famously been a place for young and ambitious people looking to make a career in finance, and has been host to numerous boom and bust phases, whether it be the IPO craze of the late 90s or the mortgage derivative boom in the 2000s. In the 1980s, leveraged buyout (LBO) firms like KKR spearheaded the then largest takeover deal ever in the purchase of RJR Nabisco, as chronicled by the bestselling book ‘Barbarians at the Gate’. As these types of takeovers typically involved large amounts of debt and cost cutting layoffs to pay for the debt, LBOs grew unpopular by the 1990s, eventually leading to the industry rebranding under the Private Equity banner. But despite the name change, cheap interest rates following the 2008 financial crisis led to a massive rise in funds of private equity management by over 1,000 times today over 1980, with perhaps a trillion dollars controlled by the top 30 firms of the likes of Blackstone, KKR, and the Carlyle Group. Since its founding in 1976, Apple has been at or near the center of personal computing. Led by legendary founder Steve Jobs, who described the company as lying at the intersection between liberal arts and technology, Apple pioneered the introduction of the graphical user interface, the music player, and the smartphone to everyday people around the world. Since his passing, however, the company, led by former operations manager Tim Cook, has delivered strong unit growth and profit numbers, but has not been able to introduce a revolutionary new product or paradigm in the way we think about the world of information technology. Mark Twain once quipped, regarding truth in journalism, that “there are lies, damned lies - and then there are statistics.” Interpretations vary, but a common take away is that people lie to others using fancy numbers. This is almost certainly true - but what is explored with tonight’s guest, statistician and professor William M. Briggs, is the tendency for people to deceive themselves by assigning undue authority to complex mathematical models and their practitioners - and not questioning the assumptions that inevitably go into those models in areas such as climate change and the recent COVID scare. Economics today is an institutionalized profession, with academic departments, research grants, and millions of practitioners in the finance and government sectors. In the late 18th and early 19th century, however, economists were not part of any formalized profession, and ranged in background from professors of logic and moral philosophy in the case of Adam Smith to dilettantish journalists with wealthy patrons in the case of Karl Marx. Friedrich List, a former German bureaucrat and eventual entrepreneur emigre to America, saw firsthand the important interplay between government and industry, particularly around protective tariffs for developing a manufacturing sector - serving as a potential “missing link” in the body of thought between the extremes of radical laissez faire free markets and top down centrally planned economies. Vladimir Putin recently won reelection as Russia’s president by a wide margin, making him the country’s longest serving ruler since Josef Stalin. Both men have also uniquely presided over their country’s largest-scale conflicts, throwing support to the argument that economic sanctions placed on countries during war only serve to entrench rather than dislodge their leaders. The world has never lacked for a troubling incident or cause for concern. But there are times when the drumbeats reach a crescendo, and in the case of war, the potential for large scale conflict seems to rise when a hegemon begins declining, and rival powers see their opportunity to increase their share. Even before humans developed metal tools, stonework, jewelry and mineral wealth have been an integral part in human society.
