On the morning of May 20th, 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from Long Island, New York in a plane he helped design on the first successful solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. 33 hours later, after braving 3,600 miles over ice cold water and bone chilling fog in the North Atlantic, Lindbergh touched down in Paris, France to cheering crowds. Upon his return to the United States, over 4 million people in a jubilant crowd attended his parade, just to get a glimpse of their hero. Like his father before him, Charles saw the devastating effect the First World War had on Europe, and with war clouds returning to the continent by the 1930s, Lindbergh sought to keep America out of the conflict. His movement, called ‘America First’, saw many of the forces behind calls to bring the American arsenal to bear in Europe to have little resemblance to the common people of the country, whom they asked to bear the brunt of the sacrifice, and in citing these forces, brought out a barrage of censorship, criticism and job losses to many of his supporters. This seemingly confirmed Lindbergh’s suspicions of the pernicious motives of the Second World War, and the courage to speak out in many ways paralleled what it took to cross the Atlantic a decade prior. As technology has advanced throughout human history, societies have adapted their way of life to try to incorporate the advantages offered while limiting the consequences. The automobile for example freed people from the limited range and unpredictable nature of the horse, but also created a need for traffic safety laws and research into pollution controls. Similarly with biotechnology and genetic engineering, the promise of curing disease motivates many to continue research, but the demonstrated and potential consequences of genetic abnormalities and eugenic warfare make this technology a power that may not be best left to the creative classes and better kept under close scrutiny if allowed at all. The world has rarely seen a time where two powers dominate the entire globe - almost utterly and completely - like in the latter half of the 20th Century with the United States and the Soviet Union, as our guest Thomas777 tonight points out. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, it also became easy to feel like the era of major global conflict was over, and forget just how deadly and potentially catastrophic with nuclear weapons the preceding eras had become. During the post World War II era, with the Axis powers having been thoroughly defeated, the (former) allies, replete with their battle tested armies and massive armaments and industrial bases, aligned against each other into capitalist and communist blocs. With the stakes never before this high, and the entire world hoping to avoid another cataclysmic 100 million dead, the United States began funding think tanks to come up with ways to do this - most notably at the RAND Corporation. During their early years, and up until the height of the Cold War, RAND attracted thousands of famous and highly influential intellects from the fields of physics, mathematics, statistics, economics and more, many of who went on to win Nobel prizes, focusing on war strategy, production planning, and predictive modeling of adversaries using theoretical and computerized simulations. Wall Street has famously been a place for young and ambitious people looking to make a career in finance, and has been host to numerous boom and bust phases, whether it be the IPO craze of the late 90s or the mortgage derivative boom in the 2000s. In the 1980s, leveraged buyout (LBO) firms like KKR spearheaded the then largest takeover deal ever in the purchase of RJR Nabisco, as chronicled by the bestselling book ‘Barbarians at the Gate’. As these types of takeovers typically involved large amounts of debt and cost cutting layoffs to pay for the debt, LBOs grew unpopular by the 1990s, eventually leading to the industry rebranding under the Private Equity banner. But despite the name change, cheap interest rates following the 2008 financial crisis led to a massive rise in funds of private equity management by over 1,000 times today over 1980, with perhaps a trillion dollars controlled by the top 30 firms of the likes of Blackstone, KKR, and the Carlyle Group. Since its founding in 1976, Apple has been at or near the center of personal computing. Led by legendary founder Steve Jobs, who described the company as lying at the intersection between liberal arts and technology, Apple pioneered the introduction of the graphical user interface, the music player, and the smartphone to everyday people around the world. Mark Twain once quipped, regarding truth in journalism, that “there are lies, damned lies - and then there are statistics.” Interpretations vary, but a common take away is that people lie to others using fancy numbers. This is almost certainly true - but what is explored with tonight’s guest, statistician and professor William M. Briggs, is the tendency for people to deceive themselves by assigning undue authority to complex mathematical models and their practitioners - and not questioning the assumptions that inevitably go into those models in areas such as climate change and the recent COVID scare. Economics today is an institutionalized profession, with academic departments, research grants, and millions of practitioners in the finance and government sectors. In the late 18th and early 19th century, however, economists were not part of any formalized profession, and ranged in background from professors of logic and moral philosophy in the case of Adam Smith to dilettantish journalists with wealthy patrons in the case of Karl Marx. Friedrich List, a former German bureaucrat and eventual entrepreneur emigre to America, saw firsthand the important interplay between government and industry, particularly around protective tariffs for developing a manufacturing sector - serving as a potential “missing link” in the body of thought between the extremes of radical laissez faire free markets and top down centrally planned economies. Vladimir Putin recently won reelection as Russia’s president by a wide margin, making him the country’s longest serving ruler since Josef Stalin. Both men have also uniquely presided over their country’s largest-scale conflicts, throwing support to the argument that economic sanctions placed on countries during war only serve to entrench rather than dislodge their leaders. In pagan Germany sometime in the 8th century, legend has it that a Christian monk, who would later become known as Saint Boniface, gathered a tribe of non-believers around him and their most sacred tree. The world has never lacked for a troubling incident or cause for concern. But there are times when the drumbeats reach a crescendo, and in the case of war, the potential for large scale conflict seems to rise when a hegemon begins declining, and rival powers see their opportunity to increase their share. Ray Dalio, having made his success running the world’s largest global macro hedge fund and authoring several books on the major forces shaping world history, recently raised his estimate on the chance of World War III occurring in the next two years from 35% to 50%. Even before humans developed metal tools, stonework, jewelry and mineral wealth have been an integral part in human society. With the advent of the industrial revolution, with coal being exploited as a primary energy source for heating and locomotion, even more minerals ranging from copper to iron to aluminum became accessible on a scale never before seen.
