We talk about the hardships of owning your Mixed-Race identity when you don't "look" Mixed and whether or not a White Passing person has a set at the Mixed-Race table. Spoiler alert: THEY DO! Mixedness is all about nuance y'all.Disclaimer: We recognize that the term “White Passing” has a specific and historically rooted meaning, particularly in reference to Black people during enslavement, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow who risked their safety and survival by passing as White. Our guest’s experience does not fall within that history. At the time this episode originally aired, however, the phrase “White Passing” was still being used in social contexts to describe Mixed-Race people who are perceived as White or who present in ways that align with Whiteness. This is discussed within the conversation itself.In the years since, Militantly Mixed has shifted its language to reflect greater accuracy and respect for that history. We no longer use “White Passing” outside of its original context.
