Decenter Mixed-Black Artist for Black Lives

We're on hiatus for July but I didn't want to leave you high and dry this month. Allow me to share a recording of a Livestream Panel Discussion we had on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. Fellow Mixed-Black creators, Alison Hart (Mostly White, Novel), Sonia Smith-Kang (Owner, Mixed-up Clothing & President of Multiracial Americans of Southern California MASC), TaRessa Stovall (Swirl Girl: Coming of Race in the USA, memoir), and Richard B. Pierre (What Are You? Film Documentarian) joined me in a discussion of how we decenter ourselves and continue to support Black Lives in our work.    I was so honored to have this experience with such an amazing panel. Which would not have happened if not for Alison Hart wanting to get us all together.    * * * You can continue the conversation on our private Facebook group after you listen to this episode at http://facebook.com/groups/militantlymixed * * * Produced and Edited by: Sharmane Fury  Music by: David Bogan, the One - https://www.dbtheone.com/ * * * Connect with us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, http://militantlymixed.com or leave us a voicemail at 323-545-6001 * * * There are two ways that you can sponsor the show, go to Patreon or Paypal

Don't let them D.A.R.V.O you

This week would have been more focused on Juneteenth if not for the continued horrifying state of things. This past week so many murders and so-called "suspected suicides by hanging" have happened one after another while the Black Lives Matter movement, protests, and uprisings are happening. It gets to a point where you feel there is no hope sometimes. Something I started to notice was this concept of DAVRO, a system of shifting blame from the perpetrator to the victim, being discussed as yet another thing to fight against. So I did a little research and I wanted to share the concept with you all here.  DARVO by Dr. Jennifer Freyd * * * Please help support our partnership with The Bail Project as we try to raise $2000 to assist our people on the frontlines with legal defense funds as needed.    Militantly Mixed - Bail Project Legal Defense Fund   Don't forget our fundraising T-shirt for BLM as well "Mixed & Hella" Black on Teespring 100% of the net profit for the purchase of those shirts go to Black Lives Matter Global Network.

Personalize your Activism

It is hard not to see the people protesting all over the world, day in and day out, and feel like you are not doing enough. But there are so many different ways to engage in activism that you don't have to feel like you're not doing enough if you are not on your frontlines. Personalize your activism, find ways in your daily life, and in your local community to effect change. Whether it is focusing on buying at Black and Brown owned, local, small business, or contributing to various funds, calling your local government officials, there is something you can do that will be powerful. Make it personal but for the village.  If you need to start Militantly Mixed has a few resources of where to contribute money or buy within the Black and Mixed community.  https://secure.givelively.org/donate/the-bail-project/militantly-mixed-podcast https://teespring.com/mixed-hella-black?pid=46&cid=103391 https://www.bonappetit.com/story/black-owned-restaurant-lists https://webuyblack.com https://www.theteabar901.com/ https://lolabeanyarnco.com There are more but you can feel free to email me or do your own search online.

Still I Rise

MixedGirlMane takes a step back from regular episodes to address the Uprisings happening in particular in the United States but since the time of record has now spread around the globe. The episode opens with Maya Angelou reading of her poem Still I Rise, as it has been like a soundtrack on repeat in my head all weekend. I hope that if you are physically at the protests you are returning home safely, I hope that you are all taking care of your mental and emotional health right now, and I hope that you're finding ways to perform activism that works best for you and your skillsets.  If you would like to contribute to funds related to the Uprisings, below are links to a few organizations that are working hard for Black and Brown communities.  Know Your Rights Campaign The Bail Project Black Lives Matter Say Her Name Photo Credit: Matthew Hatcher/Getty Images * * * You can continue the conversation on our private Facebook group after you listen to this episode at http://facebook.com/groups/militantlymixed * * * Produced and Edited by: Sharmane Fury  Music by: David Bogan, the One - https://www.dbtheone.com/ * * * Connect with us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, http://militantlymixed.com or leave us a voicemail at 323-545-6001 * * * There are two ways that you can sponsor the show, go to Patreon or Paypal

Goodbye Mr. Spinney, Big Bird, & Oscar the Grouch

I've come off of hiatus to say goodbye to Caroll Spinney, whom the world knows best as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. I was lucky enough to spend 3 days with Caroll and his wife, Debra, as a talent handler and driver for a PBS special back in 2014. During that time I got to meet and look after a childhood hero. Caroll Spinney's work as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch meant a lot to me in childhood, his attitude and love of his work even after 50 years means a lot to me as an adult. I grieve heavily for the loss of Caroll Spinney and I wanted to mark his passing on the show with a few stories about my time with him. Please join me in saying goodbye to Mr. Spinney, he'll be missed so much.  * * * Please help us to hit the $500/month goal in Patreon sponsorship by December 31st by going to http://patreon.com/militantlymixed * * * Produced and Edited by: Sharmane Fury  Music by: David Bogan, the One - https://www.dbtheone.com/ * * * Connect with us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or leave us a voicemail at 323-545-6001 * * * Militantly Mixed is a fan-sponsored podcast, if you are enjoying the show please consider sponsoring us on Patreon or Paypal today!
