Ep 33 - Building Fraternity with Dr. Kyle Walsh, Catholicfitfatherhood

Our very first interview! This week we have a very special guest with us as we welcome Dr. Kyle Walsh, create and founder of the Instagram page, Catholicfitfatherhood. Dr. Kyle Walsh is an ER/ICU doctor in the Ohio/Kentucky area and has a passion for Catholicism, masculinity, and fitness. He is a husband, father of 3, and a man striving to be a saint each and every day. Beginning around the time of the great Pope St. John Paul II's death, Kyle had a fire lit in him to learn more about his faith and become a better man. Around the age of 31, he had an epiphany that he didn't truly have meaningful friends, something men in this day and age struggle with daily. His definition of a true friend? Someone who can just walk into your house, open the refrigerator, and grab something to eat without asking. Now THAT is a true friend. Join James and Kyle this week as they talk about the importance of fraternity, masculinity, fitness, and incorporating all that into the greater foundation in our life, Catholicism.Be sure to check out Kyle's Instagram page here: CatholicfitfatherhoodThank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 32 - Ignorance is Bliss

Competency...such a sexy topic, no? Crickets....chirp.We promise you will want to listen to this episode! Competency has a deep Catholic meaning that you won't want to miss. As men, we are called to be competent and wear many hats throughout our lives. As Catholics, as husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, employers...etc. You get it. We all have many titles that are stretching us beyond our ability to cope. But what if competency is what we all should be striving for? What exactly is competency if you think about it? To be competent is to be fulfilling God's purpose in your life. It is that simple. However, there is much more to it then that otherwise why would we have made a podcast episode for you?!Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 27- Becoming a Man, Part 1

Rites of passage are things we know of instinctively. Graduation, weddings, obtaining a driver's license, or your first job are easy things to think of. But, when does a boy become a man? No, getting some peach fuzz when you are in junior high doesn't make you a man. In Western society, too many boys don't have the male figure to show them what it means to be a man. Sadly, these same boys are reverting to taking their ill-formed consciences into the real world, often resulting in violence and prison time. A rite of passage is more than just a ceremony, it's a change in a male's soul. Keep listening to part 1 of this (2...3...4?!) part series on Becoming a Man, hear James' own experience in his rite of passage, why this is so important this day and age, and some great resources to explore on your own!James Challenge: Examine your life. What was your rite of passage? How did it change you? What would you have done differently? What did you learn? Now, go out there and be a saint!Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 26 - Fasting, Your 21st Century Challenge

Fasting is one of the most underrated and underappreciated weapons in our arsenal. Unfortunately, too many of us do not use this tool enough to fight off Satan and his demons. Hey, it may even help you get a 6-pack too! Pretty cool, huh?The Bible and the Catechism tells us fasting, almsgiving, and penance are three main players to increase our spiritual life. If it's good enough to be in the Bible (even Jesus talks about it!) and the Catechism, it is good enough for me! Keep listening to find out Father Dom's Yeti story, why fasting is beneficial both spiritually and physically, and how we can use this tool to our advantage.Father Dom's Challenge: Figure out a way to implement more fasting into your life. For most of us, fasting from food is our primary fast. If that's the case, intermittent fasting is the way to go! But, some of us need to fast from other things. Sports? Cars? Gambling? Social media? Alcohol? We all struggle in some way and each struggle is an opportunity to give it up to God and grow in virtue! Now, go out there and be a saint men!Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Two of the most controversial topics in one episode....yes please! So many questions to answer, so little time.If you ever had a question about indulgences or purgatory, this is the episode for you. As Father Dom and I wrap up our 3-part series on confession, listen to find out what an indulgence is, why they are given, what purgatory is, and what the Bible has to say about it. Ep 24 - Confessions, Part II

I know you all loved the Usher reference in the title...no? Don't know who Usher is? Oh boy...moving on!In Part II on Confession we discuss penance...you can't complete the sacrament of Reconciliation without doing your penance. What is penance? Why is it important? What's the purpose of it? Can priests give physical penances? Are they too easy nowadays? Keep listening on for answers to all these questions and more!By the way, pray for Father Dom's voice. Man...he just keeps getting throat punched. Pray he can better defend himself in jiu-jitsu as well. Father Dom's Challenge: GET TO CONFESSION! I know this has been a challenge before, but that's how important it is. If you are not Catholic, do an examination of conscience every night. Begin to recognize the sins you struggle with and bring them before God for healing and to reconcile yourself not only to Him who made you but each other as well. Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 23 - Why Do I Need to Confess My Sins to a Priest?!

Confession...another hot button issue that a lot of people simply don't understand. "Why can't I just confess my sins to God?" Or "why do I have to tell my sins to an old priest?" Confession is a gift God has graciously given us yet most of us, even amongst Catholics, don't fully understand or embrace. Confession is for healing. Confession restores our place with God. Confession saves our souls.Growing up Protestant, I (James), frequently asked what the point of confessing to a priest when God was simply always right there, ready to hear how sorry I was. It wasn't until I became Catholic that many sins I struggled with throughout my life were healed from this precious gift. Continue to listen to part one to hear why confession was instituted by Jesus Christ, why he gave the power to forgive sins to the Apostles, and why we should make this a frequent part of our lives. Ep 22 - Don't Get Lazy

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. We have heard this commandment countless times throughout our life; so much so it has probably lost its meaning and significance. What if we were to tell you one of the greatest critics of the Church believed that if you abolished the Sabbath then Christianity will fall? Join Father Dom (finally!) and James as they discuss the 3rd commandment in the 10 commandments. What does it exactly mean to remember the Sabbath day? Why is it so important? What should I even do on Sundays besides go to mass? Keep listening to find out more! Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 21 - Trust....God

Trusting in God. We hear this statement countless times throughout our life. Oftentimes, we hear it so much it can, unfortunately, fall on deaf ears. We are all guilty of this. No matter how we are progressing in this life the struggle to take life by the horns and do it all our way is constantly lingering in the back of our minds. But, how often does that actually work? If you think about it, when you do everything on your own without even consulting God, do you truly appreciate what you accomplished? You might give 100% to a project at work but neglect your family in the process. You might give 100% into the sport you are training for but neglect your schoolwork. Without surrendering it all to God, you will never accomplish your goals in life and truly feel satisfied in the process. Surrendering your life to God will allow you to grow in virtue, to become a saint. Listen to this amazing talk by Chuck Swindoll on trusting God and how we can apply that to each and every aspect of our lives today. James Challenge! Take 5 minutes a day and just stop, think, and reflect on the areas in your life that you are trusting God and those areas in your life you are holding on to. What is holding you back from giving it to God? Why are some areas easier in your life to give to Him and other areas more difficult? Journal, talk with a friend or spouse and make a commitment to surrender it all over to God. Trust....God. He will never let you down!Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 17 - Thunder-rolling Through Our Battle

Confession...sigh...argh...meh. Admit it, confession is one of those things you know you should do, but may not truly see the importance of it. If nothing else helps you see how important it is maybe this episode will help you. Confession is one of those medicines that you may not like going down but you sure are happy you took it once you're through it. It's like that grape cough syrup you took as a kid (seriously...grape flavor?!). In last week's episode, the men talked about the importance of prayer and how it is pivotal in keeping our lives in order. This week, confession shows itself as a close companion to prayer to fight off the spiritual battle we engage in each and every day. Join James and Fr. Dom in Part 2 to see why confession helps keeps us in a state of grace consistently and keeps the demons at bay, why men love to be challenged and how every man needs to rise to each battle they face, why men love truth, and how and why we need to thunder-roll (Fr. Dom's new word) through this battle to emerge victorious in God's eyes.Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 16 - The Greatest Fight We Will Ever Enter

The thrill of victory...the agony of defeat. Men, these next two weeks James and Fr. Dom talk about the battle we face each and every day. We may not always be cognizant of this battle, but we better believe it is going on constantly around us. The spiritual battle is one anyone hardly talks about but it is the battle we men must be ready and willing to fight for our souls and the souls of our families. Fr. Chad Ripperger says demons are nothing to be afraid of if we are attached to Christ. He likens to Jesus as a 500-lb. gorilla he brings along to an exorcism that the demons shudder in fear to because they know they are about to be beaten to the ground. Men, Christ has beaten death, Satan's ultimate fear he lingers over our head. As David says, "Oh death, where is thy victory? Oh death, where is thy sting?" If we lean into Christ to the point where He is literally holding us up, there is nothing we cannot do.In Part 1 on this 2-part series, James and Fr. Dom talk about why prayer is our ultimate defense against diabolical influence, how and why identifying your mission in life is key to sticking to it, and prevailing, and how demons might run the simplest offense in the history of football yet they are often successful. Well, gentlemen...here we go. We all like a good controversy! In all seriousness, being clear in our faith and understanding what is going on in our beloved Church can help shape and form us. We must always remember that every person out there, no matter how evil we perceive them to be is a soul that needs to be prayed for to get to heaven. The power of prayer can never be underestimated!Continue listening to find out what the heck the USCCB actually decided to do in the fall, why President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Catholic politicians are in danger when they receive Communion, and why Fr. Ep 13Ep 13 - Transubstantiation and Bread of Life Discourse

Transubstantiation is defined in the Catechism "by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation." Men...transubstantiation is a dogma of our faith. We cannot say we are truly Catholic without fully believing in this concept as defined by the Church, nay, Jesus Himself! Continue listening to hear how James and Fr. Dom had a switch flipped based on Greek words uttered by Jesus during the Bread of Life discourse, what transubstantiation actually means, and why women can never be made priests because Jesus was a male.Thank you to our partners at Hallow! Ep 12Ep 12 - Source and Summit

The Eucharist...the source and summit of our faith. Men, if you don't know the Eucharist, this episode is for you! The Eucharist and the cross are the two elements of our Catholic faith that caused most of Jesus's followers to leave Him. Think about that men...we know how the Resurrection changed the world. Yet how many people still doubt? The Eucharist is the other major pillar of our faith that causes the most division, even amongst self-proclaimed Catholics today! Listen to this episode to hear some fantastic stories on the Eucharist, an epic quote by St. Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, the connection between the Old and New Testament, and why the Mass is NOT boring because it is all about what you put into it, not just what you receive. Ep 12Ep. 11 - Blessings in Disguise

Blessings in disguise certainly apply to this week's episode, gentlemen. Our mistake on forgetting a crucial part of the 'Our Father' prayer on last week's episode turned into an episode jam-packed full of gems this week. It seems that James' sleepless nights are starting to catch up with him!In this episode, discover how profound the disciples' question to Jesus on how to pray the 'Our Father,' the benefits of putting yourself in the disciples' shoes when you read Scripture, and how Jesus expects us to forgive others. Forgiveness is the greatest gift we can give someone else and the one that is probably the hardest to give. Men, forgiving others, truly forgiving others, is one of the surest signs of strength in a man. Don't let the shackles of anger and resentment hold you back from this gift.Father Dom's Challenge! This week men, buy the Catechism! Follow the link below to purchase one or dust the one on your bookshelf off and start reading it. Read 1, 2, 10, 100 paragraphs a day. Ep 9Ep. 9 - The Antidote to Evil

"A family that prays together stays together." How often have we heard this saying? How often do we roll our eyes and think to ourselves, "oh gosh, here we go again!" Don't be ashamed men, I used to think the same thing. The fact is the healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick. And men, unfortunately, we are all sick. Thankfully, Jesus, the Great Physician, gives us an antidote to our illness...prayer!St. Vincent de Paul summarizes prayer perfectly when he states, "Give me a man of prayer and he will be capable of everything. He may say with the apostle, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” Prayer transforms us. God does not need our prayers. God knows everything already. Prayer is for us, gentlemen. Without prayer, we have no captain driving our ship. Prayer is what keeps us grounded and humble to recognize how great God is and how minuscule we are. Listen to part 1 of our 3 part series on prayer! See why the phrase "hound of heaven" is Father Dom's favorite expression of Jesus and why "The Hound of Heaven," was once called "the most magnificent poem ever written in English" by the great G.K. Chesterton to which J. R. R. Tolkien, the master behind "The Lord of the Rings" stated Chesterton was not giving the poem the credit it deserves. James' Challenge: Start praying! 1, 5, 15, 60 minutes. Doesn't matter! Begin today. Simply ask Jesus to be present in your life, to direct your path, and give you peace. Jesus always meets us where we are at. He is always knocking on our door. Let Him in and see what He can do! As always, please pray for us! We are men who are striving every day to be holy, to become saints and we cannot do that without the help of the Holy Ghost! Ep 8Ep. 8 - Terror of Demons!

THE SLAYER OF DEMONS!...okay, that may not be a title given to St. Joseph, but it was a slip of the tongue by James and just maybe it will be added to his litany one day.For those of you who do not know, this is the year of St. Joseph as declared by Pope Francis! This day and age is especially trying for families and most glaringly men. Turn to St. Joseph, the patron saint of our beautiful Church. St. Joseph is a man who was chosen by God to lead the Holy Family. He loved his wife and son more than anyone and his actions literally spoke volumes. There is now Josephology happening in our age! Some fun facts for you men about this incredible man:He is the patron saint of our beloved Catholic Church, unborn children, fathers, workers, travelers, immigrants, and a happy death.Feast Day: March 19thSt. Joseph the Worker: May 1st, to counter the Communists' May Day by Pope Pius XII Month of March is dedicated to St. JosephWednesday (yes, every Wednesday!) is dedicated to him as well. For a man who wasn't venerated deeply in the Church until the 15th century, we are certainly trying to catch up! In this episode, James and Fr. Dom will dive into all things St. Joseph, this incredible man who was truly a man of silence. The Gospels don't record a single word of this man's life but his actions have been written about for centuries. A man who gets spoken to four times by angels is a man we all must emulate and listen to. Since he didn't say a word, we must follow his actions. Join us to find out why St. Joseph was depicted as an old man in early Catholic art, why James thinks St. Joseph should have a title added to his litany, how much St. Joseph loved our beloved mother, why St. Joseph was probably a young, strapping man and what the Gospels say in regards to this fact, and how we can take St. Joseph's faith and pray to him for it! Father Dom's Challenge: Think before you act and speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to enter in the simple moments of your life (or even the chaotic times) to direct your words and actions to fulfill His will. Men, the Holy Spirit will never steer you in the wrong direction.St. Joseph, pray for us!Be sure to follow us on Facebook and support us on Patreon. Most importantly, say a Rosary for this podcast andSend us a textSupport the showPlease prayerfully consider supporting the podcast on our Buy Me A Coffee page. to help grow the show to reach as many men as possible! Ep 7Ep. 7 - Fatherhood Is Still Changing History

Often it is said that history repeats itself. If fatherhood has changed history before, why not again? Why not you? We are ALL called to be fathers in one way or another. Whether you are a biological father, spiritual father, foster father, or simply mentoring young men, never underestimate the importance of your impact on people's lives. Listen now to discover James' personal testimony on his reluctance to be a father, Fr. Dom's path to the priesthood, and how cervical mucus somehow plays a role in this episode. Say what?! James' challenge! James has taken back-to-back episodes now. This is specifically challenging you married men who have chosen not to pursue fatherhood for whatever reason. Believe us men, James was there at one point. He wasn't ready. He wasn't mature enough. He didn't want to miss out on watching non-stop sports. The excuses were endless. Ask God specifically, "how are you calling me to be a father?" We are all called to fatherhood in some way. Ask God how he is calling you to fulfill your role as a father today. Ep 6Ep. 6 - Fatherhood Changes History

E

Fatherhood changes history. Hyperbole? At first glance, maybe. But when you think about it and especially after you listen to this episode, you realize it is not hyperbolic at all. When fathers are present, active, and putting their families first, our culture thrives. Lately, fathers have become lazy and allowed the culture to dictate to them how to run their lives. Men, enough is enough.Listen now to discover how Our Lady of Seven Sorrows has easily become one of James' new favorites and why Father Dom thinks men have no excuses to pray the Rosary (including a special offer just for our listeners!). James' Challenge: I must admit, I am stealing this one from Dr. Taylor Marshall. Pray the Rosary every day or you or not on the team! I love that line. Our Blessed Mother Mary instructed us to pray the Rosary every day. Who are we to deny our Holy Mother? Make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Ep 5Ep. 5 - Is It Manly To Love?

Is it manly to love? Love is a word that is floated around too often in our society without much attachment. We say "I love you," "I love spaghetti!", "I love lamp!" Thanks, Brick. But to truly love as a Catholic man might be a bit trickier than you think. Bishop Barron often states, "To love is to will the good of the other as other." What the heck does that mean?! Well, you will have to listen to find out more!Join James and Father Dom on another amazing episode diving deeper "Into the Breach." They discuss how a Catholic man loves as a friend and a husband. Somehow Father Dom asks the audience to buy him a red Ferrari that he will donate to charity. They give a shout-out to the amazing Catholic expert on Humanae Vitae, sexuality, and bioethics Dr. Smith Janet Smith. They dive deeper into why pornography is destroying men and why the battle for chastity is man's greatest challenge today. Wow, that was a lot! Be sure to check out all the resources for more great information to dive deeper and join the discussion.Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more witty sayings, great content, and a heck of a lot of Catholic manliness. DO NOT FORGET Father Dom's Challenge! This is probably the toughest one yet. Honestly and prayerfully, ask the Holy Spirit about the people you surround yourself with. Ask yourself, are these relationships bringing me closer to Christ or away from Christ? If away, it may be time to cut the cord on the relationship. Ep 4Ep. 4 - Behold! The Epitome of Masculinity is Before You!

What does it mean to be a Catholic man? Often times the simple questions are often the most challenging and cause us to reflect on something deeper within ourselves. Self-reflection is a skill I (James) am not particularly gifted at but something I strive to improve daily.Join your hosts as you learn how manly of a man Jesus actually was (He is the epitome of manhood after all, why you will be constantly asking yourself, "What would Hung Ly do?" and why James and Fr. Dom have a particular gift for coming up with T-shirt slogans. You will also hear about the Hall of Fame of Holiness (AKA saints) major players in the manhood world. St. Joseph, St. Pope John Paul II, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati are just some of the holy men mentioned this episode. Men, if you are not asking these formidable gentlemen to pray for you, you better get to asking! You may also appreciate Father Dom's particular joy in asking for the "no-name saints" to pray for him. After all, they have no one asking for their prayers, right? And finally, you will get some practical tips that you can start doing right now, this very day even, to do better than what you are currently doing. Hint: if you aren't going to Mass weekly (at minimum) or praying daily (minimum) now might be the time to start. Fr. Dom Challenge: Get to confession! In an absolute loving but intense way, get in a state of grace men. Jesus is waiting for you in this incredible sacrament. Yes, you will feel like crap leading up to it. Yes, you will be sweating as you list your sins. But man, oh man, do you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders afterward? Or like the monkey has come off your back? Ep 3Ep. 3 - A Manly Dilemma

Hello again! Welcome to Episode 3, "The Manly Dillema." Today, James and Father Dom continue their epic discussion Bishop Olmsted's gut-punching "Into the Breach." Bishop Olmsted asks three important questions in his exhortation that he addresses: 1. What does it mean to be a Christian man?2. How does a Catholic man love?3. Why is fatherhood, fully understood, crucial for every man?Within those questions, he discusses three primary contexts to shape and mold the questions:1. A New Apostolic Moment - The "New Evangelization"2. A Field Hospital and a Battle College3. Man and Woman are Complementary, not CompetitorsThis episode dropped all sorts of nuggets so make sure you tune in! You don't want to miss how this podcast is single-handedly trying to fulfill the call of the new evangelization, why the Church tends to the wounded from the spiritual battle with Satan and his demons (another epic novel idea), and why men and women are indeed different but they are in fact on the same team. DO NOT FORGET James' Challenge. Yes, James stole Father Dom's game. Men, get to confession. No matter how long it has been, no matter what is holding you back, get to confession. Get in a state of grace first and foremost and allow God to work in your life. I, James, dread going to confession every time, but I leave feeling a weight has been lifted from my heart and soul. The Lord truly heals and gives us such a tremendous gift with confession.Make this podcast even more manly (and yourself while you're at it) and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more sensational content and to create brothers in a community.Resources Mentioned:1. Ep 2Ep. 2 - Forward men! Step into the breach!

In this episode, Fr. Dom and James begin part 1 of their 5 part series on "Into the Breach," an apostolic exhortation issued by Bishop Thomas Olmsted in Phoenix in 2015. Bishop Olmsted came out throwing haymakers stating that men have failed in society which has led to chaos, disruption, and disappointment. For too long men have forsaken their duties and allowed Satan to penetrate the walls and create a breach in our defenses. Although this sounds like the makings of an epic novel, you will have to settle for James and Father Dom's take on the matter. Fr. Dom begins his modus operandi on Adam failing to defend the garden and allowing the serpent to enter. James quotes Shakespeare and somehow ties it into the military. James quotes stats that should leave all men preparing for the spiritual battle to defeat Satan. And so much more!Join Father Dom and James right now and change your family tree! DO NOT NEGLECT the Fr. Dom Challenge! This week, you must find a saint! Saints come in all shapes and sizes. You picked your Confirmation saint for a reason right?! Learn his or her life deeply and begin to ask for their prayers. If you have no idea what a Confirmation saint is, there are plenty of resources out there on saints. Find one you can resonate with. Find one who challenges you. Find one who makes you want to be a better man. We can all be saints. It is not impossible. Make The Manly Catholic even more manly and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more amazing content that will boggle your mind and to create communities with other men. If you could be a gentleman and a scholar, please support this podcast on Patreon. If nothing else, it will help James buy his sons another apple sauce.
