Ep 75 - Nefarious, Psychopath or Demon?
Nefarious is hitting the theatres by storm. Highly endorsed by many Catholic priests, including Cardinal Raymond Burke, for its accurate portrayal of the demonic, Nefarious will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. As ChurchPop states on its website summarizing the plot, "On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer gets a psychiatric evaluation during which he claims he is a demon, and further claims that before their time is over, the psychiatrist will commit three murders of his own."Several priests, including Cardinal Raymond Burke and exorcist Fr. Carlos Martins, recommend "Nefarious." The writers and directors of the film also brought audiences Abby Johnson's "Unplanned" movie."From roofs blowing off of houses to multiple car crashes effecting many of the crew members, Nefarious is a movie the demons don't want you to see. Join James as he interviews Cary Solomon, co-director and producer of the movie.Like what you heard? Maybe you just enjoy reading James’s show notes? For those who haven't heard, Dr. Kevin Vost passed away in early April of 2023. He was an amazing men who was passionate about fitness, health, and nutrition. Ep 71 - The Fearless Heart: How Vulnerability Unleashes Your Superpower with John Edwards
Do any of you go to a men's group? Does your parish even have a men's group? Or maybe you do go but they just flick on a video made by somebody else and that's it? The video might pump you up for 1/2 a day and then it fades and nothing in your life changes. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not faulting the creators of these men's groups because there are some amazing ones out there. However, for the majority of men, this simply does not work. Think about it. If you are the lucky few who actually have a men's group, is it well attended? Think of all the men in your parish...what percentage are going? 10%? 20%? Men, we NEED fraternity. We NEED our brothers. We NEED a change. Step in John Edwards. If you don't know John, I invite you to check out episode 37 here. John is an amazing man and is doing incredible things over at Just A Guy In The Pew. Check out his website here. In this episode, find out why men's groups need to be different and how John introduces a different way based on the four pillars Jesus shared with His disciples. You won't want to miss this one! Ep 70 - The Sum of All Fears
Do you guys ever become afraid? Do you ever freeze? Fail to act when you know you should have? Or maybe you just are afraid of having that difficult conversation that you know you should have had 3 weeks ago. Whatever the case may be, we are afraid far too often. And that is this week’s episode.Dan poses the question, "Is it ever okay to watch scary movies? As with every good answer, it depends. Does it bring you closer to God? Does it serve as mere entertainment? Or, does it drive you further from God or lead you down a darker path? Fear can drive us into action or paralyze us into inaction. It can devour us and all our waking thoughts or it can take us to our knees and give it all up to God. How we respond to fear tells a lot about how we will respond to life itself.Join James and Dan on this week's episode to discuss those scary movies, what James and Dan fear the most, and why fear is the work of the devil.CHALLENGE: This week, go to adoration. Could be 1 hour or even 5 minutes. Talk to God about your fears. Identify them. Name them. Give them to Jesus.Do not be afraid. He has overcome the world. Ep 69 - Know Thy Enemy, Know Thyself
Have you all tried to ask for a raise? Maybe you have played sports in the past and had a big competition on the horizon? Or maybe you were actually in the military on deployment. Whatever the case might be, you prepared for it, didn’t you? You studied your competition. What makes them tick? What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? How can I come out on top?You knew your enemy. Now, of course, your boss isn’t your enemy. Nor is the other team or competition you faced. The actual enemy, is Satan. Whether you know it or not, Satan is coming for you. There is a competition for your soul between Jesus and the devil. “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither yourself or the enemy, you will succumb in every battle.”In this episode, we talk about Satan. In episodes 16 and 17, we talk about Spiritual Warfare and in Episode 44 we talked about Satan’s 5 Generals. Keep listening to hear about the true enemy and why knowing him makes a whole lot more sense when looking at what is going on in the world today. Fr. Dom Challenge: He REALLY loves confession. Not only does he want you to go once, but times that by two. Be extra holy to prepare for Lent men.Not Catholic? No worries! Try the Act of Contrition linked below (number 6). Ep 63 - Interview with David Arms, The Other Co-Author of Milestone to Manhood
Are you ready to be inspired? Are you ready to take that next step and welcome your son (or daughter!) into adulthood? Then this is the interview for you!Join James and David Arms, that other co-author of the book "Milestone to Manhood," a practical guide to your boys rite of passage into adulthood. Father Dom and James discussed Rite of Passages back in episodes 27, 29, and 30. BUT, this book actually gives you a template on how to actually incorporate that into your life. You won't want to miss this interview! James talks with the other Arms, David, to get the dad's perspective on the importance of the Rite of Passage for their family. Milestone to Manhood shows how fathers of pre-teen boys can help their sons to successfully make the transition from boyhood to manhood. It is a father’s responsibility to bestow the title of “man” on his son, and the book outlines a once-in-a-lifetime weekend to help a father do so. The weekend involves the other male role models in the son’s life as well, like his grandfather, uncles, and older brothers, who all participate in order to make it clear to the boy that he is now considered to be a man. This coming-of-age ceremony is called his Rite of Passage. Visit milestonetomandhood.com for more info!Like what you heard? Maybe you just enjoy reading James’s show notes? Ep 59 - What is a reprobate mind?
In this episode, James and Ryan sit down and talk about the unknown or forgotten "reprobate mind." Although not specifically mentioned in our Catholic Bibles, the concept is rooted in the letter of St. Paul to the Romans. At that time, the Romans lived their lives lavishly with little regard for morals or objective truth. In essence, they were living in mortal sin with little conviction to change that. This can lead to what we call the reprobate mind. Join us in the fascinating discussion on what a reprobate mind is, how you can change it, and how you can strengthen your resolve to avoid becoming a reprobate! Like what you heard? Ep 54 - Interview with John Horvat, Vice President of TFP
In this interview, James sits down with John Horvat, Vice President of Tradition, Family, and Property (TFP). TFP is "an organization of lay Catholic Americans concerned about the moral crisis shaking the remnants of Christian civilization. Its earliest origins date back to January 1971, when the first TFP members started to group around the publication Crusade for a Christian Civilization. Today, with over 120,000 active members, volunteers and donors, the TFP is on the front lines of the Culture War, peacefully defending the values of tradition, family and private ownership." John is a deep thinker who offers great insight on the challenges men face today and the wonderful work that TFP does in the community, especially on campuses across the country!Like what you heard? Ep 53 - Are You Still There? Part 2 on the Synod on Synodality Listening Sessions
Ryan and James discuss on this episode the Synod on Synodality listening sessions, specifically here at St. Roberts in Ada. According to the USCCB website, the Synod on Synodality: The Synod on Synodality is a two-year process of listening and dialogue beginning with a solemn opening in Rome on October 9 and 10, 2021 with each individual diocese and church celebrating the following week on October 17. The synodal process will conclude in 2023. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission. In short, the Church is inviting lay people to give their input on how the Church can improve in various aspects. In this episode, Ryan and James specifically talk about the topics relating to listening and dialogue in the Church and society and engaging more families. Remember men, our priests, bishops, and the Pope have to answer to Christ, not us. James' Challenge: Pray specifically for the Holy Spirit to come and guide you every day this week.Like what you heard? Maybe you just enjoy reading James’s show notes? In this episode, Ryan and James specifically talk about the topics relating to the Church mission and the Church celebration in relation to Mass.James' Challenge: spend 5 minutes a day in pure silence. Ep 49 - Interview with Ryan Young - Camp Veritas
In this episode, James is joined by Ryan Young, founder of Camp Veritas, a Catholic Summer Camp for teens 12-18. Ryan is a man who has lived many lives, as he puts it. From briefly meeting his future spouse at a college meet-and-greet and knowing he was going to marry her to working as a Physician's Assistant in New York, Ryan is a doer. Husband and father to 8-children, Ryan's life is so busy he had to cut the interview short due to a little one needing stitches!During their discussion, Ryan and James speak about the four greatest challenges men face in this day and age, the biggest threats to boys becoming men, and how God rewards the proactive. Ryan is a man who believes there are no accidents and it is evident by the way he speaks about his faith and the Church. “There is nothing more delusional in the universe to think your opinion actually matters.” Ryan YoungLike what you heard? Ep 48 - Levels of Prayer - Part 2
Part 2 has arrived! No Avicii references this time around...I promise. In this episode, James and Ryan continue their discussion and dive into the various levels of prayer, including touching on some mystical levels we don't really know a heck of a lot about. We can dare to become like one of these mystics and enter the inner depths of the soul to reach these levels of mastery in prayer. Here is how you do Mental Prayer:Prepare: Place yourself in God's presence and pray for the grace to meditateBegin the meditationReflect on particular subject, some truth of God or the Faith (more on this later)Examine yourself in relation to this truthThink of how you can improve in this aspectAffections like sorrow for sin, hope in God, and love arise in your heart from considering the subject of your meditationOffer petitions in your heart to God: for people in your life, for yourself, your family, your enemies, for the Church, and so onResolve to conquer your main vice or grow in a needed virtueConclusion: Thank God for the graces He gave youRyan's Challenge: Evaluate your current level, and level up to the next one. Okay...full disclosure. James and Ryan will be discussing the Levels of Prayer in an epic 2-part series starting today! Ep 43 - Interview with Jesse Romero, A Punch in the Gut
Ohhhhh boy! You have been waiting for the day and here it is! Father Dom and James had the privilege and honor of interviewing the one and only Jesse Romero on the podcast and boy, did he not disappoint! For those of you who don't know Jesse, I am just going to drop a quote from his website: “If your parish suffers from low energy, call me, I can jump start it. I’m a full Gospel, Bible Believing, Born Again, Spirit Filled, Evangelical, Orthodox Catholic Christian, washed and empowered by the blood of Jesus. With a Bible in one hand, with a rosary in my other hand and with Jesus in my heart, you will hear the fullness of the Catholic faith in an evangelical style with devil destroying theology.”To say Jesse is energetic and passionate is an understatement.
