Ep 129129: Life in Flow with Kate Kendall
This week on the show I speak with author Kate Kendall, author of “Life in Flow” out now with Murdoch books. Kate shares myths about yoga and what it means to be a yogi (I learnt something new and it makes perfect sense!), how moving meditation can support us, what 90 seconds of feeling the feelings can do for us to bring us greater strength and joy and more. I‘ve known Kate since she was 12 and I was 17. We went to the same school and she was in my sister's year. Many years later it was so great to bump into her at an event and learn she taught yoga local to me. I'd always wanted to love yoga but hadn't found a way to understand why it was so special. I loved tennis and dance… fast, adrenalin fueled sports and yoga was a mystery, even though it looked appealing - all those calm, cool people looking strong and elegant and peaceful… So I went along to a class of Kate's at Flow Athletic and I was hooked. If you're in Sydney or visiting, treat yourself to a class with Kate and for today, we get to dive into the unlikely yogi journey she had to become one of the best-respected Yoga teachers in Australia and how everything she's learnt has been generously transposed now into her beautiful new book “Life In Flow”.How did you get into yoga? What's a yogi? Cause right now instagram says it's ultra-thin, completely stress-free, green smoothie worshipping award-winning photographers… Might make the average person feel like ‘they can't be a yogi', right? What are some of the myths you hear about yoga? In the simplest of terms, how do you define yoga? (You'll be surprised about the answer!)Was there a turning point that led you to find ‘flow'?What made you want to write a book? What are some of the yogic philosophies you explore in the book that we can all use in our every day? How did you decide what the chapters of “Life in Flow” were going to be? What are the ‘moving meditations' that you've incorporated into every chapter Let's talk about what's on the other side of uncomfortable feelings/sensations? What's the relationship between discipline and joy? What are your all-time favourite poses? Of all the inspiring authors you've soaked up, which you often share in class what you're reading at the moment, and what nuggets of wisdom are in the text… Do you have a favourite? Ep 128128: Jewellery - The unshiny truth with Marc Choyt
Have you ever thought about where your jewellery came from? Maybe from one of the big name classics, maybe from the local hand made jeweller at the markets. Have you ever thought about whether THEY know where their materials come from? Unfortunately “shiny and sparkly” are words that don't come to mind when I chat to today's guest, Marc Choy, the only ethical, fairtrade gold jeweller in the USA and president of the Fair Jewellery Action Group. He wrote an expose called: Ethical Jewelry Expose: Lies, Damn Lies and Conflict Free Diamonds that we found when we were wanting to do a show on Jewellery and it is seriously confronting to learn that “Conflict free” doesn't, unfortunately, mean all that it conjures. Please don't feel riddled with guilt for what you didn't know yesterday, once you listen to today's show. Feel excited about what you're going to change from now and I've challenged us all to find ethical, fairtrade jewellers in our local area and share them as resources for the community in today's show notes. Enjoy the show and as always, all further resources are in today's show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcastAnd here are the questions I asked Marc:Your journey into discovering that jewellery wasn't all that glitters and had a very dark side. Were you already conscious of food system injustice / environmental toxins or was this your gateway into conscious, aware choices.Share how you and your wife made the foray into ethical jewellery? From what I understand there are a few factors at play in jewellery - It's not just the fairtrade aspects of the workforce / small scale miners it's also mining methods and processing that can be very high tox... other factors?Let's start with diamonds (I too want to share a personal story about the effects of the film Blood Diamond) - What do we need to be aware of in terms of where we've come from in the history of diamond mining and trade? And gold - I've heard you talk about how it can be a toxic process - can you talk us through it?*Let's add in anything else about the process of procurement here before continuing. Can discuss before we hit record*So how did you go about becoming certified fairtrade - ONLY fairtrade certified gold jeweller in the USA might I add? What challenges did you run into as you went about establishing the supply chain? How can we be better at sourcing jewellery / good questions we can ask when we're in a jewellery shop so that we start to raise awareness and let jewellers everywhere know that we want to know we're not hurting people/planet with our jewellery choices? Are there any 'greenwash' labels/associations used in Jewellery that are similar to "All natural" and "Sustainable Palm" labels that often are quite far from what they sound like in fairness and toxicity? And if we have time I'd love to chat about your work with Native Americans and what we can all learn from their cultural, spiritual wisdom and bring into our modern lives?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 127127: SHAME with Joseph Burgo Phd
In this week's show, I chat to Joseph Burgo, PhD about Shame - Shame itself and Shame, his new book which challenges us to use Shame as a springboard rather than be taken down by it. Resilience has a lot to do with that and Jo talks a lot about that too - how it's cultivated and what early childhood has to do with it. Jo has been practising psychotherapy for more than 35 years and held licenses as a marriage and family therapist and clinical psychologist so we're lucky to have him with us sharing his experience with patients - and with his own shame over the years and I truly feel this was a fresh conversation on the topic. I was challenged in my thinking and I hope you are too so that we can lead happier, more emotionally resilient lives. As always, you'll find the show notes over on lowtoxlife.com/podcast Enjoy, Alexx xQUESTIONS What led you to study shame in your work? In the early part of your book you take us through the “Shame spectrum” - can you talk us through that spectrum now? In the start of the book you ask us to do a survey and count our points. I felt somewhat blessed to only score 12… so quite low on the scale of ‘life shame' it seems, but so many people score high - a couple of my family members scored in the 30s and 40s due to schooling traumas… Are we more scarred by the latter end of the spectrum and the higher score on the shame survey? Ie harder to heal? And it might feel like “we can never shake it” when we learn that Shame is encoded in our DNA but we can, right? Can we have a great self esteem and still feel shame? Does the foundation of a good self esteem make us more resilient in the face of shame? What role can parents play in becoming more aware of our actions, the way we discipline our kids, the way we build their self esteem in those early years? What does the act of burying and denying shame do to us - should we not be socially saying “Oh don't worry, it's ok” when a friend sees us shamed and we brush it off? What's a better way to heal from shame? When does self pity set in? Is it from repeat shame? In clinic can you share a story of how you've taken someone from self pity to self esteem? Something that happens to us often is when we're proud or have good self esteem, we're ‘put down' / tall poppy syndrome… How do we navigate this when it happens without shaming someone else and maintaining our self esteem? How do we navigate narcissists? Something I love about your book is that we get exercises at the end to help us identify shame in our lives and our pasts and heal… Self awareness being the first step, right? Can you share an exercise we could all do this week to address shame in our lives? We're likely to feel shame at some point down the track - maybe even later today: What is the most important thing we can do when we experience it?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. 126: Dr Jolene Brighten on the contraceptive pill and post birth control syndrome
Well I think I've met my match when it comes to someone who can't shut up a bout a topic they're passionate about - Dr Jolene Brighten is here to join me this week and we got chatting for half an hour before even hitting record! If you haven't come across her work here's the wrap: Before earning her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine at the National University of Natural Medicine, she graduated with a degree in nutritional biochemistry and clinical nutrition. There she was involved in nutrition research exploring interventions for maintaining healthy hormones and body composition as we age.She founded 3 clinics before age 35 and is currently the medical director at Rubus Health in Portland, Oregon. Her post-doctorate education and training in Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition have been through The Institute for Functional Medicine. It was an instant Best Seller and has helped hundreds of women heal themselves after birth. Her second book, Beyond the Pill, with Harper One, has come out January 29, 2019.And in today's show we discuss the effects of the birth control pill both during the use of it and when coming off it, and what women can do to take back their health. It's such an empowering conversation and I hope afterwards women everywhere go rushing to grab a copy of Jolene's incredible new book - Beyond the Pill. Enjoy today's conversation. 125: Supporting healthy attention span in Kids with Dr Leila Mason
Does your child have trouble focusing? Can they concentrate easily for the appropriate time for their age or is it always a struggle? In this week's show, I invite the wonderful integrative paediatrician Dr Leila Masson back onto the show (and if you didn't catch show #7 right back at the beginning, our show on hidden deficiencies has been a game changers for people - adults AND children all around the world so go check it out too! In this show, Leila reminds us of what our children need psychologically and physiologically to thrive and be able to focus and concentrate as they grow older. We talk about her top lifestyle adjustments if you have a child who finds focus and concentrating difficult, as well as when to know if clinical intervention is required. So often we head straight for the doctor and while of course that'd keep Leila very busy if we did, she's so passionate about reminding us of all we can do to support our children outside of the doctor's office - and classroom! Ep 124124: Helping our children thrive: A conversation between Brenda Janschek and Alexx Stuart
This week's show I've invited the wonderful Brenda Janschek, health coach onto the show with me - in the near 3 years of the show, we've never discussed children's health together, despite working with thousands of parents through our Thrive course on that very subject, since 2014. So today, we look at what has helped our children thrive from cooking in the kitchen to family meal times and how we've navigated the ‘grey area' of food guidance for our children out in social situations when they have to make their own choices, when and how to relax about social situations and how to ensure we don't raise kids who are paranoid about food with labels like “bad food” which can quickly have a child feel they're a bad person for eating it - OR can have them start to use those labels to annoy you by rebelling with ‘bad' food. Lots of twists and turns and useful information for any parents navigating the food conversation at home. I hope you enjoy it. 123: How happy is your gut? With Dr Vincent Pedre
This week's show I've invited the wonderful integrative physician based in New York, Dr Vincent Pedre on to talk all things gut - Dr Pedre is a Board-Certified Internist (internal medicine Dr) and Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner in private practice in New York City since 2004. His philosophy and practices are a blend of both Western and Eastern medical traditions. He is a Clinical Instructor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, as well as certified in yoga and Medical Acupuncture. In today's exploration of gut health, we go where science meets ‘woo woo' and I've detailed the questions we cover below (with a couple of great tangents to be sure!). I hope you enjoy it. Check out all the extra resources, our sponsor offer and show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast We're going to hopefully through this frame work cover your "cleanse/ Activate/ Restore / Enhance" process... How you came to be a gut loving / championing physician? You give one of the best descriptions / clarifications around the term 'leaky gut' which I'd love for you to share... "What happens in your gut doesn't stay in your gut" - love that... Share what you mean about it and let's talk microbial metabolites and the two way street between gut and brain. I've seen you mention 'addressing mold issues' on IG - very excited to see more and more practitioner awareness building in this field, as a mouldie, recovering CIRS person myself... Can we talk gut / liver relationship and the issue many people who are super toxic face when they start working to detoxify but their liver's so clogged you liberate the toxins and they've got nowhere to go - how can we strategically plan out a detoxification regime without it sending our systems haywire The bacteria in our microbiome: Is the probiotic craze workin' out for us or - given diversity is so many 1000s of species, are we approaching it the wrong way with these single strain or 4-6 strain melanges? You share a lot of thoughts around the intimate link between how we view chronic health issues / how we desperately want to recover but how our thoughts around it can sometimes keep us stuck - can you explain how you came to realise that often patients were holding themselves back and how people can take steps to break thought patterns that are contributing to their physical state? 122: On women and stress: Dr Carrie Jones & Dr Libby Weaver.
So the second and last ‘mash up week' of the summer series is a topic I see so many women struggle with in our community and even though we can be the most chilled out person (like me!) stress can be body stress from chronic illness also (like me with CIRS) so it can have a double meaning and root stress, yet a similar physiological cascade down stream. I loved both of these conversations in their entirety so if you love today's mash up I'd encourage you to go back and listen to both the originals. These women champion women's health in a powerful way and today we talk cortisol / cortisone balance and relationship, Estrogen, the HPA Axis and adrenal fatigue, “Rushing women syndrome”, how stress manifests, how we can change our view of stress and how wee get to show up in the world. It's a cracker! I hope you enjoy it. Check out all the extra resources, our sponsor offer and show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. 121: On winning at sleep… A summer series with Dr Ron Ehrlich, Dr Fiona Kerr & Alex Fergus PT
Welcome to 2019 and I hope you've had a beautiful year so far. This week and next, I've put together a couple of past podcast mash ups on two topics that come up again and again in our community as being pain-points / stuck-points… HELP points! No1 is of course: Sleep. So this week we have Dr Fiona Kerr, Dr Ron Ehrlich and Alex Fergus PT all sharing wisdom from different angles when it comes to working on your sleep, why it's important, how naps (and the length of naps) can impact your energy and problem solving, how blue light affects you, what happens when you sleep with your mouth open and much, much more. I hope you enjoy this show as a springboard for getting your best sleep yet in 2019. Ep 120Show #120: Jonathan Fields on how to live a good life
As we're not doing shows on the 24th or 31st, I just HAD to include this golden conversation with inspiring author and general “help you live your best life and never in a phoney way” legend, Jonathan Fields. Whether you know him from his podcast “The Good Life Project” or his book “How to live a good life” or whether you've never heard of him, today is a treat. A New York City dad, husband, and former SEC and mega-firm lawyer turned award-winning author, serial entrepreneur and expert in applied personal development and human potential, Jonathan has founded a number of transformational wellness-companies, taught everything from yoga and mindfulness to entrepreneurship and innovation, and led workshops, events and retreats around the world for thousands. We discuss simple strategies for building a rock solid, loveable life, accepting that it's not always going to be perfect, yet being able to identify more easily when something's not quite right and ensure your 3 buckets are being tended to. He also issues us all a seven day challenge on the show that is absolutely perfect - I'll leave you to discover for yourself. All details and further resources on lowtoxlife.com/podcast. Ep 119Show #119: Dr Zach Bush on saving the planet from changing our soil to changing the internet
So just a light topic today then, hey? I am thrilled to invite triple board certified physician, Zach Bush onto the show today for a conversation that made me throw out my questions as soon as we tucked in. When you do the math on the autism prediction of 1 in 3 children having an autism diagnosis by 2030 and EVERYONE having a cancer diagnosis in their life time by that same time, it is time to go big or go home. Instead of being scared by that trajectory, Zach is taking it on with the big picture thinking required. I've shared “further listening / watching” links in the show notes today so that you can dive into some of his lectures on glyphosate, chronic disease and more, and in today's conversation, while we touch on these things, we also look at the things that are currently having the biggest impact on people / planet health and also what's going to have the biggest impact on turning it around. We look at cancer, microbes, mitochondria, soil and the flawed system that he had to leave, despite being on track to run a medicine faculty, always cleaning up with top awards. Buckle up and enjoy the show, remember to replace feelings of panic with your next micro action that moves us deliciously forward. All details and further resources on lowtoxlife.com/podcast. Ep 118Show #118: Textiles with environmental scientist Anne Foster, founder of Elkie & Ark
In my show this week we go deep into some of the labels you'll find on your clothes, bed linen and textiles in general. What does fair trade, made in XYZ country, made with organic cotton, GOTS certified and Ecotek all mean when it's on the label? What are we NOT seeing on the label that is used in the farming and production process? How do we develop a healthier relationship with what we choose when it comes to textiles? How does the textiles industry impact climate change and what can we do about it? What are some of the hardest aspects of having an ethical, organic textiles business? It's definitely a 2 cup-of-tea / 7K steps kind of podcast this week and I hope you love it as much as I loved picking Anne's brain. She's so considered in her thinking and exploring of the facts and by the end of the show you'll want to buy less, source well and start supporting brands who do right by people and planet, as well as start challenging the ones you've loved perhaps in the past, to do better, by having the conversations that need to happen. Ep 117Show #117: Meik Wiking on Lykke, Hygge and global happiness research and predictors
This week on the show the wonderful two times New York Times best seller Meik Wiking joins me once again. It was one of the most popular podcasts of last year on the Danish art of “hygge” which means cosiness so I'm excited to bring you another conversation with Meik. This time we go a bit deeper into happiness research, what the single biggest factors are for a society feeling happy for the most part, and what things like language use, daily actions and government stances on climate and equality do to impact the overall stats - You won't believe what the biggest predictor of heart disease is in the united states. I am still in shock! Enjoy the conversation and I can't wait to hear what your aha's were. Ep 116Show #116: Alexx shares the top 3 FAQs from the book tour and the top 5 low tox swaps you can make!
This week it's me chatting to you direct. No guest. I'm sharing the 3 most asked about topics from the book tour AND the 5 top recommendations I've made across the country in today's show if you're feeling a little lost or overwhelmed as to where to start or how to prioritise and not feel like you're never doing enough - that ain't allowed on my watch! Perfect for those newly embarked on their low tox way as well as curious to see if any old timers were surprised by what came up the most or what my top 5 were. I've just completed 42 Book tour events (I think in the show I said 29 - I physically just counted them in my diary and it was 42 - thank you to all who came!) and across those 42 events, I've insisted we take at least half an hour to take community questions and see what people are really feeling tricky, challenged by so that it's not just me talking AT people but we move forward and solve the big challenges in our community TOGETHER. Enjoy today's show and head to the show notes or club chat space to share your top swaps in this week's chat thread. Head to www.lowtoxlife/podcast for the show notes and sponsor offer details. Ep 115Show #115: Maggie Dent on raising boys in today’s times
Maggie Dent is a well known voice of reason and comfort when it comes to raising all children, and especially boys. With 4 boys of her own all grown up now, and being a teacher in a boy's senior school she knows a thing or two about what makes boys tick, what helps us raise good, resilient men and how to nurture the feelings of boys, allowing them to express themselves, holding space for them, and supporting them through challenging times. In this chat we discuss the unique opportunities and challenges in raising (or educating if you're a teacher) boys, as well as her new book “Mothering Our Boys”. Maggie is so full of knowledge and love when it comes to boys and I do hope parents, coaching, tutors and teachers everywhere hear this chat and take the words of wisdom into their every day. As a parent of a boy myself I often find myself thinking “What would Maggie do?” in the, erm, more challenging times. Enjoy and don't forget to head to the show notes for this week's sponsor details, the giveaway and more information on how to connect further with Maggie's work and books, Alexx x www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast Here are the questions I asked Maggie: In the note at the start of your new book, you mention a survey you ran that was research for your book. What was that survey... what answers were you seeking in asking those questions? You say you're bilingual in that you can speak man speak AND woman speak: Can you share a bit about what you see to be the fundamental difference between the way boys/girls men/women communicate? This book really feels like it's a plea and an invitation to all mothers of boys to make a pledge and it's all leaping from your heart, you can feel it: Did it bubble away for you for a bit or did this book leap out into the world with urgency? Early on also you talk about the alarming stats on violence, self harm, addiction and suicide in young men. What do you believe are some of the biggest contributing factors to these stats? You talk about a limit to "free exploration" and a shift to experiencing life via a screen: How's that playing out? What effects? What is an urban, apartment dwelling family with an only child to do (ie my family)? The 2018 parent could read the stats / these shifts and be overcome with pangs of guilt and feel like they're not giving their child the childhood that will help them thrive best... BUT: Can these families create that wild freedom in new ways? What do you see to be the best ways we can help boys develop a good moral compass? The #Metoo movement has brought to the fore so many injustices inflicted by men from the old 'boy's code' of entitlement and power... but while we teach our boys that good moral compass it seems they're then handed over to the porn screens of the internet and see entitlement and power/domination exaggerated... How do we help them navigate kind and respectful relationships with girls when we can't control what they see 'out there' - is it as simple as being really open and having conversations about porn and its non-real depiction of sex? Does seeing a popularisation of "The Future is Female" make you sad? It makes me sad... I feel it's a good intention (women's equality) miscommunicated (ie, step aside men, women are taking over) when that was never the point of feminism... How do we navigate the rise of female empowerment, while holding space for men to evolve their definition in tact, in this new world? Now onto some other, wonderful and powerful things I took from your book: What often matters greatly to your son, will be some sort of experiment / activity that you will just not understand why on EARTH it's important: Can you give us an example of that / how we can recognise potential sabotaging of their 'special projects' and what to do to ensure they feel validated in them? How are our young boys sidelined as ineffective / 'dumb' / useless often, in schooling and at home with mixed sibling households and what are some of the best ways we can empower our boys to feel their worth / 'warrior tendency'? Decoding boy behaviour after school: This I loved from both your book and recent seminar... I often joke with my mother friends of girls, that thank gosh we get to find out everything that's going on / needs doing through the girls because trying to get two words out of Seb after school is blood from a stone. Could you share why that is? Best ways to get good juicy chats happening with our boys (and men!) There is a mistaken perception that boys and men don't feel emotions as much as women — they do. They just process them and often communicate them very differently. How is that and what do we need to be aware of as parents? Signs we need to help them unpack emotions about what's

Ep 114Show #114: Katarina Wallentin on the wonder in the world & her children’s books with a difference
I'm so thrilled to have discovered Katarina Wallentin, when she sent us her book - Clara the Climate Changer. She has worked in many hidden parts of the globe with international organizations such as United Nations, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders. Her aim has always been to explore, experience and change the world we live in to something greater for now and the future. During her travels, she has experienced first-hand that nothing on this amazing Earth is totally black or white, right or wrong - a woman after my own heart! Instead, everything is interconnected and what you see, depends on the shade of the glasses you put on. This year she is publishing two children's books – The Baby Unicorn Manifest and Clara & the Climate Changer. She is currently working on a third book, for adults, called The Bullshitometer. Katarina lives in Stockholm with her 15-year-old daughter Emilia who she brings on her travels and adventures as often as possible and today we discuss a variety of topics based on these questions I asked her (and the tangents we went on!) The continuous exploration of the wondrous world we get to live in - you've got a rich CV full of interesting things and you also see a world in pain: How do you stay 'light' in exploring our world with wonder? How do you not let yourself experience overwhelm for all that needs our urgent attention? (Constant struggle for the conscious low tox peeps) Empowering people to know that they actually know - What do you mean by that, I'm intrigued! How do you raise a conscious kid in this age? There's never been more information available to us to teach with, yet by the same toke it feels that we shelter our kids from the 'real world' more than ever... You say you love being silly with my brilliant and funny and amazing15 year olddaughter and I love being silly with my 9 year old son - I'd love to hear what that looks like for you guys? How did you teach her balance between caring about causes / embracing playfulness? Do you believe that balance is what's going to help us continue to drive impactful change? It's no fun if it's all super serious, right? Tell me the story of how you decided to become a children's book author. You seem to have quite a lot ON!hehe. Clara the climatechanger: How did that come about? A personal passion for communicating climate change to people in a relatable way? Something else? Ep 113Show #113: Jonathan Latham on understanding genetics, GMOs, roundup and the food movement
It's a brilliant science nerd alert this week for you on the show as I bring you Jonathan R Latham, PhD who is co-founder and Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project and the Editor of Independent Science News. Dr Latham is also the Director of the Poison Papers project which publicizes documents of the chemical industry and its regulators. Dr. Latham holds a Masters degree in Crop Genetics and a PhD in Virology. He was subsequently a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has published scientific papers in disciplines as diverse as plant ecology, plant virology, genetics and genetic engineering. Dr Latham talks frequently at international events and scientific and regulatory conferences on the research conducted by the Project. He has written for Truthout, MIT Technology Review, the Guardian, Resilience, Salon.com, and many other magazines and websites. It's so important that if we're going to be ‘pro' a certain type of food that we need to truly understand what we're ‘against' so that when challenged we don't just heatedly say “it's toxic”. It's not enough and we need to meet curiosity with science so that people understand the informed position we're taking. Here's the frame work for the chat Jonathan and I had: QUESTIONS Re the food movement: the 'feed the world' debate / your views / solutions that don't involve gmos in their current usage / soil depletion / ecological disruption etc... And what you're most excited about right now with the grass roots ground swell happening all around. The poison papers - how they came about / what the objective is / As a contributor - what does your role entail? / The records date back to the 1920s, so in looking back do we see - as with so many things supposedly 'safe' then found harmful - timelines of examples (ddt / other chemicals)... Glyphosate / RoundUp got bumped back up to the top of conversation with the recent court ruling ordering Monsanto to pay $289USD to the groundskeeper of a school, finding that his cancer was caused by RoundUp usage: What can the poison papers reveal about RoundUp / Glyphosate? We can nut this section of the chat out more precisely before we hit record... Understanding genetics - What do we need to understand about the current GMO paradigm that isn't working for our health / planet's health? How does what's going on now negatively impact our health (BT toxin / Glyphosate ) and the planet's (monocropping / high herbicide / pesticide use etc) Is there any circumstance / example / technology that you've seen either in the works or currently used, which GMOs might work in our food system? And then more on what you want us to understand... dangers / evidence that's come to light etc. And of course, the usual tangents and twists you've come to expect on the show. Ep 112Show #112: Dr John Demartini - Achieving goals by your highest value
Well, I still haven't quite come down from this conversation. So much to unpack from all the revelatory juice. I welcome with great enthusiasm, Dr John Demartini this week. He is considered one of the world's leading authorities on human behavior and personal development. He is the founder of the Demartini Institute, a private research and education organization with a curriculum of over 72 courses covering multiple aspects of human development. He travels 360 days a year to countries all over the globe where he shares his research and findings in all markets and sectors. He is the author of 40 books published in 29 different languages. He has produced over 60 CDs and DVDs covering subjects such as development in relationships, wealth, education and business. High achiever, much? And all from such humble beginnings with health adversity, homelessness and dropping out of school early. The only limits we have are those we place on ourselves and John not only proves it in his own life, but helps many around the world prove it to themselves. QUESTIONS I asked John along with some juicy tangents along the way… So many people live their current life and future projections, based on the bad stuff that might have clouded them from their past. You have such an inspiring story that PROVES it's not our past that defines our 'lot in life' but the values and priorities we decide on for ourselves. Seems despite some massive adversities in your life at such a young age, that you just knew you weren't going to be bound by limitation - Can you explain how that might be? Why were you able to 'just know' when so many people can't see beyond hardship? And then... what are some of the steps we could take to free ourselves from what we think might limit us and live freer / bigger lives? Is it doing deep work on our values first and foremost? We can spend whole days, months and years doing all the little things that aren't so important if we stop and think about our values / priorities - how do we shift this and lead with the big stuff that matters on a deep personal level instead of 'what everyone is asking of us societally / culturally? When is it 'rude / inconsiderate' to priorities our needs - is there a point at which this becomes selfish? What are some of the traps we can fall into, sacrificing our true selves for the demands of others? When it comes to the idea that people doing something meaningful with their lives tend to live longer - What about the person stuck in 2 jobs as a janitor / burger king cashier just to keep food on the table / kids clothed. One might argue that's not feeling very meaningful for them - Can the 'meaningful part' be our 'why' rather than the work itself... Caring for our kids is surely the most valuable endeavour of them all, right? So whatever it takes makes it meaningful? Illness: We've shifted from an infectious disease mortality to a chronic disease mortality and while a lot of the contributing causes are from the environment / the toxins in food / not enough nutrient dense foods / sedentary lifestyle etc - you also place a strong link between psychology and illness. Are we also 'thinking' ourselves sicker? Hope you love the show and as usual you can access the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 111Show #111: Dr Libby Weaver on rushing women and The Beauty Guide
At long last, the stars align and Dr Libby is joining me for a chat. If you've been under a rock, Dr Libby Weaver (PhD) is one of Australasia's leading nutritional biochemists, an author, a speaker and founder of the plant-based supplement range, Bio Blends. Armed with an abundance of knowledge, scientific research and a true desire to help people regain their energy and vitality, Dr Libby empowers and inspires people to take charge of their health and happiness through her books, live events and nutritional support range. Having sold over 350,000 books across New Zealand and Australia, she is an eleven-times bestselling author and published internationally including in UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Russia and Italy. What I love most about Libby is her passion transference capability - it's one thing to be extremely knowledgeable, it's a gift to be able to then share that knowledge passionately and inspire action in others. Here are the questions I ask Libby today - and of course we go off on the usual tangents! Cave Woman vs Modern Woman which laid the foundation for your Rushing Women's Syndrome book and general awareness. How is this modern world affecting women at the biochemical level? How do we see our A to our B of de-stressing? (Often there are feelings of disempowerment / feeling trapped that prevent us from stepping into our power to make the necessary changes) Pulling back the covers on what's really driving your stress... Let's talk about the major potential factors here and how we go about looking into our lives for our personal stress drivers Something I've loved hearing you talk about also to challenge the idea that all busy-ness is 'bad' in the past, is "Is 'stress' stressing you out / could you view 'having a lot on' in your life, as NOT being stressful in the negative sense. Can you talk us through that for those who haven't heard you talk about this before? How do we go about reframing 'SO BUSY' to "A rich and fulfilling life" so that in the busy times of a life we're loving full of things we love doing / people we love seeing, we're not mounting a harmful stress response? Now onto your latest book - 11th best selling book to be exact! What called you to write The Beauty Guide? How are you seeing comparison culture play out for people? It's not just women either... men being constantly told how to have rock hard abs etc... Is it really that different having online in the mix now? (Will add anecdote about a friend recounting her "who's got the best legs" lunch time school yard comparisons in Year 9... My friends all having to lay our bras out to discuss them / who had the coolest one. Are the teens, and then later women, of today feeling it even more with the added 'never switch off' potential fort comparisons to be made? How do we go about loving our bodies - many women just wouldn't know how to unpack their body hatred / how it started / how to move towards a conversation of love with their bodies. If we've time: Botox and other obsessions with never feeing that we're enough in our natural states? Is botox dangerous? Any research coming out yet? What to put on your skin – hormone-disrupting substances A topic after my own heart as you know... How do we go about repairing the damage that possibly decades (and generations) of endocrine disruptive chemicals have caused us? Detoxifying fat soluble / water soluble chemicals / obesogens... We're often told by the holistic-health-skeptics "Oh it's nonsense that people need to actively seek out additional detox protocols / programs, we have a liver!" BUT... We have never had a liver burdened by the level of things it's burdened by these days: What are some of your favourite liver support and repair strategies as we reduce every day toxins and start to ease the load. S1 Ep 110Show #110: Dr Lewis Ehrlich: Your holistic dentistry questions answered Part 2
Dr Lewis Ehrlich is a highly sought after holistic dentist who graduated from James Cook University (JCU) with the Academic Medal. With a background in professional sport and his passion for holistic health, Lewis focuses on the link between oral health and general overall health in his practice - it's why you'll never hear a bandaid solution for an oral health concern in my interviews with him! Before studying dentistry, he completed a Bachelor of Science at Northeastern University in Boston, USA after receiving a soccer scholarship where he played for 2 years. He then moved to Reykjavik, Iceland where he played professional soccer before moving into dentistry and now practicing at Sydney Holistic Dental. This show, part 2 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis (go back for the 1st one last month!), is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 2, we talk: Cavities and fillings Preventative oral health Miscellaneous trouble shoots from grinding to tongue ties to geographic spots and so much more! Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details. Here are the questions answered in this second FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between: On fillings and cavity protection:At a dentist a few years ago, my 5 yr old had 3 fillings told me it was bad luck and there was nothing I could do. Dietary improvement was my first thing. What else? I have tried using natural toothpastes and they all cause mouth ulcers and corners of my mouth to crack really bad? I really want to use natural toothpaste but I'm unsure which ingredient may be causing this? Any suggestions?? Thank you.I'd be interested to hear about what toothpaste (glycerine or no glycerine) and/or toothbrush (electric vs manual) he recommends for children. I've read so many different opinions on this topic, particularly in relation to the glycerine in toothpaste issue, so any brand recs would be great. would you mind asking Dr. Ehrlich if there is any actual benefit to using toothpaste, or is it just an added bonus to make your breath fresh and your mouth feel like it's had a good clean because you can "taste" the clean. I read somewhere recently that there's no real benefit to toothpaste, that it's the brushing and flossing that actually is the most important part of the process. On preventative oral health What does he think of Weston Price's research on teeth -diet prevents over crowding, don't remove wisdom teeth, root canals can cause heart disease?Does he believe vitamin d / k2 supplementation universally necessary for kids? How do you change your mouth microbiome, with symptoms such as bad breathe, metallic taste, white tongue, excessive saliva? I know there is a correlation with gut dysbiosis and the bacteria imbalance starting in the mouth. And working on the gut is key to changing the way the gut and body functions, but are there ways to change the mouth microbiome in order to get a head start on changing the gut microbiome.I have receding gums. I'm wondering if this is due to poor diet or brushing my gums too hard ( I like to get it really clean), and what natural remedies I could try before seeing a traditional dentist? Anything to help get kids to look after their teeth...?We've just been recommended to brush with kids fluoride toothpaste and then after rinsing pop more on the back molars that are showing signs of decay. Are there any alternatives? It's my 4yo with the issues. On trouble shooting miscellaneous issues What causes grinding and how to fix? My son has a ‘geographic' spot on his tongue. ( changes location all the time) What could be the causes? Is it a sign of something more problematic? Teeth clenching and how to stop it! I'm having to wear a mouth guard at night and I've heard miss 4 grind her teethTongue tie - I've recently been told by a holistic dentist that I have a partial tongue tie - had no idea and I'm sure there are loads of people like me. She said it goes hand in hand with jaw clenching and teeth grinding. My question is how important is it to have corrected. I figure I've made it past 50 years of age without knowing - maybe I can let this one slide.Chromogenic bacteria, how does someone

Ep 109Show #109: Joel Salatin on food, soil and regenerative effects of working with nature's systems
Oooh how excited I am to share this conversation this week. Joel Salatin, 61, calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. Those who don't like him call him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He's as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference. Sounds like someone worth hearing what they have to say, right? You will leave this conversation more hopeful and happy than you found it when it comes to the food and farming front, that I can guarantee you. Here are the questions I asked Joel with the usual twists, tangents and deviations you've come to expect. For the people who've been under a rock... Were you born and bred a farmer? Did you always farm in the way you do now? a) the magic of regenerative principlesb) the magic of soil and grassc) how animals are an essential part of the prosperity of both of those! d) a couple of favourite rehab / regenerative projects - how they came about / what kind of resistance you were perhaps met with initially and what kinds of transformations the land experienced by changing farming style... can it be fast? e) how small hold farming can be a wonderful, profitable businessf) if you had a farmer in front of you today, who was a feedlot farmer or a small farmer using lots of sprays and they kind of knew it wasn't an ideal set up, but born perhaps into the system they were born into, they can't see from A to B... a) do you think they can change over time / adopt new principles / business modelling et b) where on earth would they be able to start? g) Regenerative farming for climate change challengesHope you love the show and as usual you can access the show notes and sponsor offer over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx x See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 108Show #108: The Art of Self Love with author Kim Morrison
Do you love yourself? Really, really love yourself? That's what we're unpacking this week as I speak to the beautiful Kim Morrison about her new book on the subject. While we discuss her personal story and realisations over the years, we'll also be talking about some the deep work we can do to love ourselves, in a world that sell product based on us not being good enough to love in our current state, SO much of the time. Kim was born in New Zealand and raised in Auckland. She proudly set the auspicious world record to be the youngest woman to run 100miles in under 24hours and holds 8 Australian indoor records. She's a business woman, an aromatherapist and personal trainer and has completed studies in nutrition, reflexology and counselling. She's married to former international NZ Cricketer Danny Morrison and we have two two teens Tayla and Jakob and they have been living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland since 2006 - proud Aussies these days! Here are the questions I asked Kim (and there were some juicy tangents as usual) Why another book? Why now? Very early in the book you talk about a rather massive unravelling in your life. A rock bottom of sorts. Could you share a little piece of that with us now? And then you talk about your son's saving words, which I have to admit, I was reading and thinking “sounds like something out of Minecraft” hehe so I was laughing big time when I then saw the video game reference… BUT he still know they were the perfect words to offer at the time, right? How have you garnered compassion in your kids over the years? I think as parents it's something we all hope for / try our best to instil - what does teaching your kids compassion look like for you? Did you experience an element of what your husband experienced when his cricketing career ended? Ie, you're the youngest and fasted 100mile runner in 1983: Where the heck does one GO from there? Did you need to recalibrate / find renewed sense of purpose? You reference Don Miguels 4 non negotiables. I want to discuss 2 there because I think they're particularly juicy. No specific questions on these / just want to talk them out for a bit… 1. Don't take anything personally - gosh that's a big challenge as we've become SUCH a reactive society, right? / 2. Never make assumptions and be brave enough to ask questions / make clear what you really want. No 2 is HUGE isn't it? I think I might make it the challenge of the week: List all your assumptions from “this is too spicy for my child” to “my husband won't have any interest in moving to France” (did I say that out loud? hehe) and everything in between. You talk about an experience your son had as a 16 year old and instead of “how the F could you do such a think” type predictable parent to teen talk in a crisis, you explained calmly while stroking his head that he'd fallen out of love with himself… Just WOW. Did you need an element of strength to act that way do you think? Did it come naturally? What can parents of teens do to navigate that stormy era where the S can hit the fan and use them as resilience building blocks instead of massive road blocks, which it sure seems you were able to do with Jakob! Now let's hook into this Art of Self Love more deeply - How did you arrive at the 6 steps of self love? How does it manifest if we're not loving ourselves? 6 basic steps and you say 3 are about DOING the work and 3 are about BEING the work - can you talk about what you mean there? Can one dip into any of the steps as you see fit for the situation - ie needing one more than another at a certain time in life or do you find a sequent. You talk about self sabotage as a driver that takes us OFF our self love and goal setting course… Self sabotage being defined as “wanting something” yet deliberately sabotaging yourself through decisions that give you the opposite of what desire. Can you share an instance of self sabotage in your life? Oils for self sabotage? Guilt: Useful or another part of the self sabotage picture? Oils for guilt ? Now, we don't possibly have time for going this in dept into all of the things holding us back, so you have the book for that. Kim, If there were three small daily practices that you value above all others to keep our self love alive, what would they be? I hope you enjoy the show and as always, you can check out the show notes and sponsor offer over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast and see how to come join the low tox club. Alexx x See om

Ep 107Show #107: Dr Lewis Ehrlich: Your holistic dentistry questions answered Part 1
This show, part 1 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis, is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 1, we talk about tooth enamel - when it's weakened / why / what to do as well as various apparatuses you might be thinking about using be it metal wires, myo brace, invisalign, silicon and plastic plates and spacers etc. The show notes have a tonne of resources with toothpaste recommendations that both do and don't contain fluoride, as well as floss recommendations, useful extra-listening podcasts and Dr Lewis's practice details, as well as our show supporter offer. Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details. Here are the questions answered in this first FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between: On the enamel... My daughter has crap enamel. Tips to improve? She was recommended tooth mousse but has casein ( to which she is allergic). We do do cod liver oil ( Nordic naturals). We were also recommended the clear protective coating that lasts a few years, I believe it's made of plastic though! Would love to know more about that also. Why do we see such an influx of kids with hypoplasia (enamel not formed properly) and what are the REAL causes?! I just can't quite believe that it is something that happened in utero because the mother was ill or antibiotics may have played a part (neither applied to me and yet one of my kids has a severe case of hypoplasia). I know sooooo many kids with this problem, is there any new research that can pin point the cause of this yet? Maybe environmental causes (wouldn't it be crazy if we all found out it was an everyday toxin that caused this in this generation of kids). This is a really heartbreaking story for us, my son is only 7 and so conscious of his teeth and we are constantly at the specialist dentists, feeding him the best food possible etc. I also really want to know about hypoplasia! Is there anything we can do to improve it and strengthen the teeth? Is there some kind if plan we can follow to avoid lots of decay in the future? My daughter had perfect baby teeth and her new teeth have all started coming out blotchy and with discoloured patches. Poor thing is so self conscious already. Thanks for giving us the chance to ask. wanting to know about crap enamel and fluoride - is tooth mousse and fluoride in water REALLY necessary? We went and saw Lewis Ehrlich for my son and he recommended tooth mousse to help improve his enamel but then our current paediatric dentist (not a holistic one) said he doesn't believe the product is necessary and strongly advised to use fluoride to help strengthen the enamel. I would like to know the best option to help strengthen enamel low tox or not.I'm also very interested in hearing more about reversing and/or preventing demineralisation, particularly for women post birth. Seems to be a problem for many.Best treatment if any for fluorosis? And is the the prevention of this just avaoiding fluoride consumption? My 5 year old daughter has only ever used natural fluoride free tooth paste. She has spots on her teeth that are translucent rather than white. Is this from her natural tooth paste? She has only had antibiotics once in her life and her diet is excellent. On instruments / apparatuses / procedures / cosmetic dental Any thoughts on children having separators to make room for teeth? Is that a question or just the normal thing to do?I had invisalign done a few years ago and I'm wondering if there

Ep 106Show #106: Nicole Avery: Being planned (in the kitchen and in general family life) so you can be present with your kids
Wow. I learnt so much this week in this conversation. Nicole Avery is a business woman, a mother of 5 and one heck of an organised person. True story. I just had to hack her incredible tips, tricks and overwhelm-preventative measures that her family of 7 take to run things smoothly - most of the time (no one is perfect, remember?). I have been so inspired to look ahead to when my travel is done for the year and develop some of the themes we discussed in a more impactful way in my own family life. We often confuse, as a society, feeling organised and well planned, with lacking the ability to be spontaneous and too serious, when in fact, the discipline of a well organised house hold actually creates the opportunity for MORE spontaneity and freedom - how's that for a mindset shift? Enjoy this wonderful chat with a woman who's truly gifted at getting it all well planned so that she and her family can kick all the goals they fancy, all the while inspiring us to do the same. The show notes and sponsor offer are over at www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast and I hope you love this week's show as much as I did. Alexx x Being planned so you can be present with your family - Here are the questions I asked Nicole (with a few tangents thrown in for good measure as usual) So many of us feel overwhelmed by lack of time, chasing our tails, and many of us have 1-2-3 kids. You have 5 and literally wrote the course on how to be planned... Were you always naturally organised? As your family grew how did you find you needed to adjust things (ie having babies / older kids in the mix - differences / meeting all needs) A lot of people feel boxed in by planning... how can we feel spontaneous AND planned - can they coexist? How does a disorganised, uninspired soul motivate themselves toward the idea of 'getting well planned'? I'd imagine one of the most important aspects of motivation would be to do the work and figure out how exactly this is going to benefit you personally and as a family? ie personalisation of the 'why' = effective implementation as I talk about in my book... Let's talk tools for meal planning How do you help people navigate food allergies / intolerances when it comes to planning? What happens when you've done all the planning and then the plan changes (sick kids / impromptu play dates etc) With the families you've worked with, How have you seen people's lives change when being better planned on the food front. I'd imagine food waste saving / budget saving happen when we plan out our weeks? Do you recommend involving the family in the plan to maximise uptake of the various meals being cooked "Tonight it's Bob's fave. Good choice bob, delicious" type positive affirmation around kid's choices... If you had to share your favourite reasons for getting a meal plan happening to finish of everything we've talked about, what would they be? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 105Show #105: Mike Shade from Safer chemicals, healthy families, on turbo charging change for a safer future!
This week on the show it is my pleasure to welcome Mike Shade, campaign director for Safer Chemicals, Safer Families. It's one thing for us to know we don't want this stuff in our environments, homes and on our bodies, but it's another to find a way to effect change and move us forward. Mike Shade, in his work with Safer Chemicals, Safer families is doing just that. They're committed to getting retailers to use their power as a customer to the product makers, to get safer formulations made. So clever! It's an inspiring chat and I know for those of you who want to achieve more or feel like you and I do make a difference, you will LOVE it. Here are the questions I ask Mike and the show notes and sponsor offer for this month can be found over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Enjoy! Alexx x How you came to be an activist against toxic chemicals? Reluctant or always a passionate environmentally aware / health conscious person from upbringing? Why did you join "Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families"? What did you see was missing / needed to really take things up a notch? Today, a coalition of 450 organisations and most of the organising happening at Kitchen table gatherings - what was the road to get to a place where you have united 450 individual organisations to collectively take action? Something I love in looking at the work you guys do is seeing "POLICY. RETAILERS. EDUCATION" buttons to explain the different levels of change making - can you talk us through each the the three. The role that retailers can play to protect consumers from toxic chemicals - see RetailerReportCard.com One of your greatest successes so far is giving rise to a growing movement among retailers to phase out the sale of deadly and dangerous paint strippers -- see https://saferchemicals.org/newsroom/the-home-depot-to-be-third-major-u-s-retailer-to-ban-deadly-paint-strippers/ - How did that start? What research did you gather / how many people did you organise and how? Every activist has their 'pet chemicals' they're particularly vocal about / they champion... Toxic chemicals in food and food packaging - in particular phthalates and PFAS - see http://www.kleanupkraft.org/ - How did you come across this issue - how can we measure how toxic these are? What do you believe has been your most successful campaign yet? What are you working on at the moment? Ep 104Show #104: Meet Pebble’s founder Georgina Wilson-Powell: Making a difference through digital publishing.
I've popped a bonus show on today because we've found this wonderful online publication that's branching out into ethical city guides too, called Pebble. Georgina Wilson-Powell is the founder and it was wonderful to discuss how she came to realise that Pebble needed to happen, and what they're doing to be the change as a publication and share inspiring resources, ethical brands and more, to connect the low tox peeps out there in the world to the kind of investments they want to make for a better world - through something as simple as our wardrobe and more! We talk B Corps, Zero Waste, Permaculture, ethical city guides and more and I hope you take time to connect to Pebble if it's something up your alley. Ep 103Show #103: Meet the modern mystic Belinda Davidson
Imagine just working through your emails and Gregoire from 1789 comes trotting past you with a smile - don't know about you but I would NOT get much work done if that were to happen to me. This week on the show I interview a psychic - the modern mystic Belinda Davidson. What a special conversation this is and I was quite taken aback by how pragmatic and non woo woo Belinda was. It's not every day that we get to spend time understanding how life must be when you've got a foot in our world, and another foot somewhere else. Belinda doesn't ascribe to any particular religious or spiritual tradition. She simply shares her insights and expertise to help you discover your soul, stay connected to it, and boldly live your unique and magnificent soul purpose. To thine own self be true, is her life motto. She is DEFINITELY not a newbie intuitive or spiritual coach who just popped up last week. Belinda was born psychic, and has been working as a professional intuitive for more than twenty years. And when she used to give readings, she had a two-year waitlist. Here are the questions I asked Belinda (and a few extra ones where we went on delicious tangents - you guys know how I love those, right?) What's it like to be psychic? What do you remember about your childhood in relation to everything you've come to do so far in your work? Little aha's that it turns out not everyone could see or do as you did... Was being psychic as a child a gift or a curse? Can you read people even if they're not physically with you? How do you find the strongest readings of people come / happen? Is there a pattern to the circumstance? Can you consciously decide to not read someone and by consequence simply not 'see' anything when chatting? You say you've one foot in this world and one foot in another... What other realms do you experience? You've found a way to hone exactly what it is about your own gifts that can best serve others and you see your "life purpose as helping people change their energy to heal their lives". What does that look like in your day to day work? In changing people's energy, do you work with chakras? What are the principals of chakra balancing / healing that you most love? If in certain parts of our lives aren't working properly it's because a chakra isn't working properly, how much can we rely on this? Is this for day to day tweaking? I'd imagine the nay sayer saying "oh yes, I'm going to chakra clear instead of get my ankle surgery. SURE" - There's a place for acute care AND chakra healing to work together / complement, surely? You speak about your enlightened moment/meditation and our purpose being to recognise that we are light when darkness is all around us - that can be hard sometimes with a sensation of everything darkening around us all the time - more death, more threats of war, more hate speech and on and on... how do we best protect our lightness in today's world? Ep 102Show #102: Men’s health part 2 with Dr Ralph Esposito: Heart, Weight and Brain
My first show with Dr Ralph Esposito was so popular we've just had to do a part 2 on men's health. I hope you enjoy as we dig into more men's health topics that matter to you as polled in the Low Tox Life Club which you can join via Patreon. Here's what we cover in today's show: Heart health Cholesterol - when to worry and what to do if your doc recommends statins and make an informed decision. FATS: Is it one size fits all or are some better suited to sat fats than others and others Mediterranean omegas / olive oil? (ie should everyone be running to the store for coconut oil or for some is that not the best way forward?) Belly fat: Seems that when a man gets a little lax on the lifestyle front, the belly cops it first: Why does that happen? Why a big tummy ain't ok long term and what best to do to reduce belly fat in men? Man Boobs or Moobs as I heard them called the other day: Too much estrogen? How do our men sort those out? Is intermittent fasting good for all / certain situations where best not? And how is IF different for men / women? Best way for a man to build muscle mass / reduce fat and maintain? Brain health: We see the stats on alzheimer's and this one has hit home for me recently with a friend's husband having early onset Alz - what are some of the key stressors to the body / brain in our earlier years that can set us up for a stronger disposition to Alz / Dem? What are some of the best things men (specifically or say 'for both men and women if yes) can do to grow older with a strong brain leading the charge? AND of course in true low tox conversation style, we tangent a couple of times for good measure. Enjoy the show and don't forget all the information about our show sponsor and where to buy the book as well as helpful links to resources mentioned in the show are available in the show notes www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast and click on today's show tile. Ep 101Show #101: Professor Will Steffen talks facts on Climate Change and what we can all do!
Ever been to a climate change talk or watched a documentary and felt heavy, powerless, despair? Well, this conversation is going to leave you feeling different - can do, ra ra and empowered. Sound better? Let me tell you a bit about Professor Will… Will Steffen has a long history in international global change research, serving from 1998 to 2004 as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, Sweden, and before that as Executive Officer of IGBP's Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project. Will was the Inaugural Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute, from 2008-2012. Prior to that, he was Director of the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society. From 2004 to 2011 he served as science adviser to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change. He is currently a Climate Councillor with the Climate Institute, and from 2011 to 2013 was a Climate Commissioner on the Australian Government's Climate Commission; Chair of the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee, Co-Director of the Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) initiative and Member of the ACT Climate Change Council. Steffen's interests span a broad range within the fields of sustainability and Earth System science, with an emphasis on the science of climate change, approaches to climate change adaptation in land systems, incorporation of human processes in Earth System modelling and analysis; and the history and future of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature. So: We have a wonderful scientist with a long list of accomplishments in his career that has spanned decades and the best part is that he so passionately and simply states the issues, shares and helps us understand the science, looks at the future projections and what you and I can do to keep on the good side of mother nature. I've wanted to do a show on climate change for a long while and finding Will has meant the perfect show embedded with the low tox values of empowered joyful change, rather than paralysis and overwhelm in the face of the world's biggest issue. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. Ep 100Show #100: Publisher Jane Morrow from Murdoch Books interviews Alexx Stuart
One day with the exciting and looming ‘100th show' being discussed, Elise my awesome assistant decided I should be interviewed for the 100th show. Awesome! But WHO? That's when I thought who better than my publisher Jane who saw something in this whole ‘low tox life' thing worth exploring for a book, and her bringing that curiousity on a personal and professional level to a conversation with me about the state of play in the world today, why I decided to start the Low tox Life in the first place, how I came up with the term ‘low tox' that's now everywhere, how I feel we're going in the direction we're headed and at the speed we're headed? And a few other questions. I hope you enjoy the chat AND I hope you enjoy the Audience Q&A segment after my chat with Jane from all the questions you submitted in the newsletter call out - from teenage boys to IUDs to overwhelm to “what If I were to change just one thing” to “how to deal with cost / overwhelm / misinformation / will power… It's all in today's show. Thank you so much for tuning in each week, sharing the show with your friends and family members and feeding back the successes you've had and submitting 5 star reviews. You are the best audience to work for that I could ever have hoped for. Here's to 100 more awesome shows. Ep 99Show #99: High Functioning Anxiety with Tammi Kirkness
There are people you meet who you're instantly on the same vibration as. One of those people for me is Tammi Kirkness. Past show guest Melissa Browne introduced us because Tammi was a fan of the toxin lowering aspect to Low tox Life and wanted to include that in her E course on High Functioning Anxiety and factors to address on the road to quietening it. We shared mouldy apartment stories and our outlook on healing and voila - the rest is history and I HAD to have her on the show. In today's chat we discuss high functioning anxiety, how it differs from generalised anxiety, lifestyle factors that contribute to HFA, strategies to bust it (perfectionist or imposter syndrome anyone?); we have a blissful and impromptu meditative couple of minutes that we can refocus into positive energy and have negative energy bounce off us… We even discuss energetic healing and the fact that she's a clairvoyant. It's a chat with many twists, turns and practical take homes to live a life of strength and positivity - even if you crumble sometimes. WE ALL DO! The show notes, show supporter offer and Tammi's wonderful course can all be found in the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast - Enjoy the show! Ep 98Show #98: Coach Jake Carter wants everyone to feel their best.
Sometimes you come across people who you just feel in your bones are ‘someone to watch' if what they're able to understand and help people with now is at the level it is. Jake Carter is one of those people and I came across him from past show guest, Dr Carrie Jones. Jake shares how he came to be a body science nerd after experiencing injuries in his teens and going on to be a Personal Trainer, and then how that ignited a thirst for nutrition and an understanding of the many individual things that could be occurring for someone that means no ‘one' thing every fits us all, which then lead him to problem solving tough cases where other avenues had all been explored. His energy bursts from the microphone and into your ears and we talk lifestyle factors, health ‘hand breaks', digestion, constipation and more in today's show. Ep 97Show #97: For the love of cooking
This week on the show it's a short solo show, checking in with how you're feeling about cooking - I was feeling like it was all too hard this month with everything going on and I find I always need to come back to gratitude, to what I'm best at, and to approaching it with smarts so that it's not hard and I'm not going ‘from scratch' every time. I'd love for you to share your ideas in the show notes comments and when you get my new book Low Tox Life, you'll see how many more simple things you can do to fall in love with cooking - or at least not begrudge it! Ep 96Show #96: The History and Magic of SEEDS with author Carolyn Fry
This week I welcome author and journalist Carolyn Fry onto the show. Didn't think you could listen to 45 minutes talking about seeds? Think again! Here are the questions I asked Carolyn with a few tangents true to form as well: What sparked the thought that this book needed to be in the world? Were you always personally interested in nature and seeds growing up or was it something born from an experience at some point - an aha? When you look at early human history, in the book you talk about how we 'walked to a better diet' - can you share a little about what you mean there? How did shifting from hunter gatherer to seed-sowing cause a population boom? (BIG tangent here too that's fascinating!) And what did cooking our food do for us in the early days? How did seeds transform the way we feed ourselves? How are some of the ways that seeds spread? How have we changed seeds since we started cultivating them? What is so important about seed conservation, classification and 'banking'? Tell us the story of the first seed scientist Nikolai Vavilov. He saw in seeds so much more than anyone saw at the time - a true pioneer. Now you talk about a lot of different seeds and types of seeds in the book and while they say no child is a favourite - do you have a favourite seed or two from all your research, and what is it / why? Does it make you sad to see how seeds are being manipulated these days in the name of 'progress'? Carolyn has authored 6 books on natural history, conservation and science and is the former editor of Geographical, the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society. It is such a pleasure taking a look at how seeds have evolved and how we've evolved because of them and I hope you enjoy the show. Ep 95Show #95: The Dirt Cure and a conversation about healing with Dr Maya Shetreat.
This week's guest is - simply put - awesome. We have such a wonderful chat about her book: The Dirt Cure, as well as a general exploration into the power of connectedness with our earth, neurology advances, healing and more. Dr Maya Shetreat is a neurologist, herbalist, urban farmer, and author of The Dirt Cure: Healthy Food, Healthy Gut, Happy Child, which has been translated into ten languages. She has been featured in the New York Times, The Telegraph, NPR, Sky News, The Dr. Oz Show and more. Dr. Maya is the founder of the Terrain Institute, where she teaches Terrain Medicine™, earth-based programs for transformational healing. She works and studies with indigenous communities and healers in Ecuador, and is a lifelong student of ethnobotany, plant healing, and the sacred. Dr. Maya's philosophy is that the health of our inner terrain—our bodies– is a reflection of the health of our outer terrain, the natural world around us. Gut, immune and nervous system—and the many microbes therein—are a direct reflection of the food we eat and where that food comes from, from the soil it's grown in to the water it swims in to the synthetic chemicals that it's bathed in. Fresh food, microbes (that's right, germs) and elements of nature—soil, sunshine, water, and fresh air—make children resilient and prevent or reverse their illness. Ep 94Show #94: A conversation on WASTE and powerful, gentle activism with Rob Greenfield
Rob is known as the guy who wore a month's trash through the streets of New York City, totalling 60kg by the end of the month (don't worry, he cleaned it before attaching to the ‘trash suit'). Rob is an adventurer, environmental activist, humanitarian, and dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world. Rob is the creator of The Food Waste Fiasco, a campaign that strives to end food waste and hunger in the U.S. He has dove into more than two thousand dumpsters across the United States (which we talk about today!) to demonstrate how nearly half of all food in the U.S. is wasted while 50 million (1 in 7) Americans are food insecure. Other things we talk about are his waste reducing tips through the home, how he lives on so little, what his next ideas and projects are and more. If you want the positive motivation to take your waste DOWN a notch or 100 notches - you will love this show. I'm still smiling ear to ear from our conversation and the hope I have for our world. Ep 93Show #93: Plastic pollution and the Plastic Free July story with Rebecca Prince-Ruiz
There is an undeniable shift from so many people away from single use plastics and plastic items that have plastic free alternatives (switching from a bath gel pump to a bar soap for example) but there is still a massive amount of work to do in spreading the word and shifting people's perceptions around them being ‘inconvenienced'. In today's chat, I discuss plastic pollution - the situation AND the hope we both share, for how powerfully we can change the statistic that there is going to be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050 if we continue this way. Rebecca shares many insights into consumer behaviour that they've studied to design the most effective change narrative as well as sharing her very personal journey in reducing waste in her home, to then the little office challenge she issued which then turned out to be the initiative that Plastic Free July has become - something that millions connect to from around the world today! Enjoy the show, be uplifted not disheartened and see you for Plastic Free July! I'll be posting every day on instagram @lowtoxlife if you fancy joining me there. Ep 92Show #92: Supercharge your gut with Lee Holmes
Author Lee Holmes joins me on the show this week to discuss the simple strategies she implemented when her gut health went south after multiple antibiotics many years ago. From there her immune system was affected until a cascade effect landed her in hospital. What she managed to do to eat and act her way back to health has now been shared with many thousands of people through her 8 books and thriving online community, and today on the show we talk about some of the strategies she's found to work best, and what's been helpful for restoring gut health, rebalancing the good and bad gut bugs and increasing resilience moving forward so that meal time stress can dissipate and you can enjoy food again. If you're someone who's tried ‘all the things' when it comes to your gut health, or even if you're curious about trying the little one day experiment Lee challenges you to in today's episode, I hope you enjoy today's show. Ep 91Show #91: Men’s Health with Dr Ralph Esposito part 1 - sex hormones, fertility, yearly check ups and prostate
Thrilled to have Dr Ralph Esposito join me on the show this week for our first male-focused show. There are of course so many things we could tackle, so I'm calling this part 1 and I want you to pop over to the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast and leave a comment with a male health topic you'd like covered for our part 2. In today's show we discuss fertility and the major factors concerning decline in sperm health and motility, major factors that upset the balance of testosterone and oestrogen in men, health check up markers men should annually request to check in on their health and a touch of prostate at the end - pun intended ;-) No subject on men's health is taboo in this ep. We discuss everything from drinking, sleeping and morning glory so if you find talking about sexual organs sensitive for you, tune out this week. For the rest of you buckle up for this important discussion that I'm already looking forward to the sequel of and of course, if you're a woman reading this, listen WITH your man instead of talking TO your man about everything he needs to do - always better when it comes from a doc rather than feeling like the nagging partner. Ep 90Show #90: A low tox money conversation with author Melissa Browne
For a while now I've been trying to put into words exactly why I feel that money, and a healthy and smart relationship with it is part of leading a low tox life. Today on the show, this happens. The 4 principal aspects that define a Low Tox Life are food, body, home and mind. Stress is a part of the mind and if we're stressed for prolonged periods of time, it negatively impacts our body and mind. A huge contributor to many people's stress? Money. And so, there's the link and why I wanted to bring my accountant, and all round money conversation superstar Melissa Browne into it. Melissa's been voted one of the Top 100 women of Influence by the financial review and she's determined to take the taboo out of money and get us all TALKING. I hope you enjoy the show. Ep 89Show #89: Stephanie Devine on creating the world’s first zero waste bra
When you look at a business founder journey, there are countless examples of the change makers and pioneers, being people who've come through a mess to create their message or a dark personal time, leading them to becoming a torch bearer of sorts on a new path. Stephanie Devine is one of those founders, and her kickstarter campaign cleared its goal in 48 hours, such is the demand for sustainable, traceable clothing items and in this case BRAS. I chat to Stephanie about the fire that was put in her belly to found this business and some of the struggles along the way to source materials and convince people to make certain components of her “VERY GOOD BRA” for her. Ep 88Show #88: Low Tox Life, the book: A sneak peak reading!
This week you've just got little old me! I'm reading a few excerpts from my upcoming book, Low Tox Life, which if you get the book or not, either way will hopefully be lots of food for thought! It's available internationally rolling out from July 1, 2018. I also share some of the journeys people have gone on since I issued the challenge to ask yourself these questions when considering a purchase: 1. How was this made / what from? 2. Who made it and were they fairly paid? 3. Am I ok with all those answers? Keep your research coming in the show notes comments and I'll be publishing some of the stories as an inspiring blog post to help others take their scrutiny up a notch. Ep 87Show #87: Dr Carrie Jones on going Dutch on your hormones
Ever been told, after getting a hormone test back - whether it was testosterone, estrogen, thyroid hormones, cortisol or anything else, that everything's 'normal' and 'you're fine?' - yet you feel totally NOT FINE? In this week's show I chat to the wonderful Dr Carrie Jones who makes the trickiest of hormone challenges (male or female) feel like a fun puzzle to get to the bottom of - and I'm serious. Imagine turning the talk of hormone woes on its head and making it instead an interesting fun thing to figure out - it was this attitude of Carrie's from following her instagram feed and the generous sharing she does there, that said: I have to have her on the show and shake up the hormone conversation, that's always such a Debbie downer! Carrie is a Naturopathic Physician with a Master's in Public Health having over 12 years in the field of functional and integrative medicine. As Adjunct Faculty for the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), she has taught courses in both Gynaecology and Advanced Endocrinology. She has been the Medical Director for two large integrative clinics in Portland, Oregon and is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the most cutting edge hormone test on the market, the DUTCH Test. So, come and listen while Carrie and I discuss the ins and outs of testing, what our results can tell us, how she doesn't believe in Adrenal Fatigue (yes, you heard me right there!) and what it means when your cortisone and cortisol are off kilter. It's such a great chat, and I can't wait to hear what you guys think. I love what the Dutch test can offer us, so I was super thrilled to have Carrie join me for a general in-depth hormone chat as well as a deeper look into the capability of the Dutch test. Ep 86Show #86: Gero Leson from Dr Bronner’s: Doing our best in business for Spaceship Earth
Very rarely do you find a company so transparent, so vocal about social and environmental injustice and so good at growing a healthy business, as Dr Bronner's. A family run business from way back, it's one of my favourites for many reasons. I wanted to bring on their VP Gero Leson a phd in environmental science, who works to set up incredible partnerships with communities in developing countries to set up their supply chain. Rarely do you get to look under the hood of a procurement and production cycle like this. It will also highlight that nothing is black and white and yes - shock horror - there can be such a thing as sustainable, ethical palm oil. This is for the nerds who just love digging into how business can be a HUGE part of the change towards a better world. Gero doesn't hold back. SUCH a good chat. I hope you love it and think even more fondly of your humble castile soap the next time you pick it up. Ep 85Show #85: The modern Childhood Epidemics with holistic paediatrician, Dr Elisa Song
Hold onto your hats guys this is a BIG and LONG one. Elisa and I recorded both this conversation and another for our Low Tox Kids course in a 3 hour marathon from two sides of the Pacific Ocean. Dr Song is such a caring soul, and with her knowledge of both conventional and complementary medicine offers incredible support as we navigate the modern world with more kids having some sort of issue than not, these days. In this chat we discuss what the biggest challenges we face in children's health are today, as well as some of the ways we can best support our children today. Ep 84Show #84: Holistic Decision Making with Dan Palmer
Do you make knee jerk decisions, or decisions that later don't seem to have been very smart for your future that frustrate you? While today's show isn't about any aspect of life specifically, it is about learning the art of holistic decision making from the man who has a Phd in the subject, Dan Palmer. Join me for a lovely, fun and accessible chat exploring holistic decision making as a tool for steering your life, business, or whatever into a space that brings you quality of life whilst keeping you in check on the big picture stuff, like the planet we live on. S6 Ep 83Show #83: VP of corporate responsibility at LEGO, Tim Brooks on their 2030 targets
I remember so well seeing the news break that lego were going to be aiming to be new-petroleum-free by 2030, engaging a huge task force of sustainability experts, scientists and industrial designers to work on this project. Today, some 2.5 years late, I chat to Tim Brooks, ex environmental advisor to the City of London, now with LEGO, on how their work is going towards this goal. We can all move mountains, and the big companies of LEGO's size can effect radical change when they move the needle on how the produce their products, so I hope you enjoy this look into what Lego is working to achieve. Ep 82Show #82: Dr Elise Bialylew on mindfulness
If anyone knows about “this is what I think I want to do” but then climbs that mountain and goes “Oh dear, I think I've been called to do THAT” and has a major career shift, it's me. It was wonderful to meet Elise finally, after having done Mindful In May myself in the past, and discuss her journey from originally becoming a trained Doctor, surgeon and psychiatrist, but feeling to pull to make her principal life's work about teaching mindfulness both in workplaces and creating online spaces and events to motivate a happier and more mindful life. She's the best selling author of The Happiness Plan and founder of the largest online Mindfulness event in the world - Mindful In May. We talk scientific research behind why mindfulness isn't a woo woo left field thing to discount as not being important, we discuss raising mindful kids, managing and quietening anxiety, and so much more! I hope you enjoy the show and all the details for Mindful in May including our pop up Low Tox Life Facebook group we're going to have for the month of May for all of us doing it, are in the show notes lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 81Show #81: Dr Elen Ap Thomas on precocious puberty
In this show I chat to Dr Elen Ap Thomas, an Integrative Doctor based in Queensland, Australia, about a topic that parents in the low tox community wanted to see on the show. We discuss some of the signs in girls and boys that early-onset puberty is occurring, when it's worth investigating, when and how it's possible to delay those early signs and some of the factors that science is starting to show, contribute to it happening in the first place, from our diets to our lifestyles. It's a show designed to educate, not alarm and ensure that our little peeps are supported as they grow, whether they go into puberty early or not. Ep 80Show #80: Dr Steven Lin and the Dental Diet (Note: Steven was found to be abusive to his ex-wife, breeched AVO + attacked two women and was shot by police, dead, in 2026. I advise against listening.
2026 NOTE: Steven Lin was shot dead by police the day he attacked two women in their apartments in a break-in, with a knife, in 2026. It had been 9 years since I'd last spoken with him for the podcast, and spoken at a Whole Foods family event he organised on the Central Coast in 2018. We communicated via email once 3-4 years ago when he aggressively insisted on doing another podcast on my show. I politely declined and unfollowed him on socials when I saw his misogynistic, narrow approach to health and politics emerge. Full report on his demise, the abuse he inflicted on the women in 2026 and the domestic violence he committed against his wife, including an AVO breech reported here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-04/dentist-shot-dead-by-police-potts-point-steven-lin-sydney/106415708We have hosted many great dental health shows with Dr Lewis Ehrlich, Dr Staci Whittman, and Dr Michelle Jorgensen over the years to support and educate on holistic dental health. For nearly a century, we've been told that fluoride is the key to not getting tooth decay, and while there's some research to suggest targeted topical benefit, the real reason for great healthy teeth is exactly what maintains a great healthy body: Largely? It's FOOD. Dr Steven Lin is fresh off his US tour promoting the book and shares an abundance of interesting facts about our teeth, gums, disease, and the myths that orthodontics and getting your wisdom teeth out are just part in parcel of life.
