Low Pressure Podcast: Skiing's First Podcast

The Blondes are Janelle Yip, Tonje Kvivik and Emily Childs. They are a fun loving, mountain slaying crew of bad-ass ladies taking the ski world by storm.

Drew Petersen is not only an amazing skier but he's very proficient in writing ski Memes! When he's not skiing big lines Drew is thinking up ways to make people smile. During our chat we talk about humour and the need for, "people to laugh at ski town culture." But life is all about balance and Drew opens up about the steps he takes in his journey to maintain his mental health.

Grete Eliassen, easily one of the best freestyle skiers of the 2000's is returning to the sport she loves. Grete stepped away from skiing in 2013 to finish school, start her career and to have a family. Her love for skiing never waned and she's making a comeback!

Just before the beginning of last season my truck broke down. I called my good friend, Leah Loynachan, to see if she could pick me up and drive me home. Leah also happens to be, "The Voice" that greets you to every episode of the LPP. On the way back to my place we started talking about how the newly constructed, Blackcomb Gondola, which was replacing the Wizard and Solar Coaster chairs. We were wondering how it was going to affect how we approached the mountain on a powder day. How would it change our powder day routines?

Katie Burrell, the comedic force behind last year's hilarious and refreshing not-ski movie "Dream Job", joins to tell us about her next project, work out our personal beef and comment on the current call-out culture in skiing's social media.

Arianna Tricomi is now a 3x Freeride World Tour Champion! This is also her first podcast! She invited us into her home to talk about which direction her skiing will take and whether she's done with the Tour for now. If you've been wondering where Johnny Collinson has been lately, he's spent the better part of the last couple years healing and rehabbing from two different ACL surgeries as well as a bone graft on his knee. We met up with him for a killer week of skiing powder in the French Alps where he is a featured guest coach on a Uthrive freeride ski camp.

Jess Hotter, the up and coming Kiwi on the Freeride World Tour, spent the last few years paying her dues on the Qualifier circuit. In just her second event in the big show she cashed in, taking top spot on the podium at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Tim Durtschi has arrived on the LPP! We met up with Tim at the Freeride World Tour event at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, BC. We talk about the new twist in his career of spending the season competing on the FWT. He explains the similarities, challenges and his approach to the tour in comparison to his regular routine of filming and skiing for photos.

Trevor Kennison announced his arrival to the ski world almost exactly one year ago by launching his sit-ski into the legendary Corbet's Couloir at the Kings and Queens of Corbet's event in Jackson hole. Airing into Corbet's is an impressive feat for the able-bodied. Trevor's send instantly elevated him to legendary status and kick-started his career as a professional skier. What a way to make an entrance!

Guy Fattal is a professional ski photographer from Israel. He tells us the unique story of his journey from growing up in the Middle East to being one of the industry's most published photographers today.

Kristofer Turdell, Redbull Athlete and Freeride World Tour Champion, joins the LPP just ahead of the new FWT season. We talk about his path leading him to the tour, his mindset and preparation for each event and what he does when he's not competing.

Kyle Smaine is a South Lake Tahoe based skier and an all around amazing athlete. He's competed at a high level in almost every discipline in skiing including winning a World Championship in Halfpipe. I met Kyle at his home mountain of Sierra at Tahoe and we went and skied some pow in the trees.

Maddie Bowman, Gold Medalist Halfpipe Skier, and Hazel Birnbaum, Freeride World Tour veteran, invited me to join them at Kirkwood Mountain Resort for a day of shredding. We got to know each other and had a hilarious time while recording this episode on many chairlift rides in between laps of fresh, blower, snow under a gorgeous blue California sky.

Scott Gaffney is a legend in the ski industry. As the principal director of Matchstick Productions' annual ski movies for the better part of 2 decades, Scott has has influenced and entertained an entire generation of skiers.

Connery Lundin is a professional skier from Squaw Valley California. Originally a weekend warrior from Oakland, Connery decided at the age of 16 to move to Squaw full time to pursue his dreams in ski racing. As many pro freeskiers learn racing just wasn't for him so he transferred his energy and abilities to competing on the Freesking World Tour. His decision paid off as he won the tour in 2015 but by then he was, once again, ready for a change.

Rob Heule is a professional skier, part time Christmas light hanger, clothing and manufacturer, river surfer and all around good guy. Originally from Fernie, BC and now living just outside of Calgary, Rob made the trip to Whistler to attend a North Face event and stopped by the LPP Studios.

Mark Abma is a legend in skiing but you probably already knew that. He's been a staple in MSP's annual ski films for the last 18 years and has graced the pages and covers of most if not all of your favourite mags. Mark returns to the LPP today tell us what's going on in his life

Gus Rowley is a 4th generation Merino wool farmer from New Zealand's South Island. The thing about New Zealand farmers is that many, if not all of them, are also ripping skiers. In this episode we get the actual origin story of one of the most important pieces of gear we pull on to start a day in the mountains, the Merino base layer.

Reuben Krabbe is an action sports photographer that seems to enjoy choosing projects that pushes himself out of his comfort zone. Those projects are figuratively, and quite literally, astronomical.

Evan McEachran is a professional Slopestlye and Big Air Skier from Canada. We met up and recorded this episode in Montreal at the Newschoolers.com offices after a big night at the IF3 festival. Evan decided at the last minute he was going to drive 6 hours from his home in Oakville Ontario to catch a couple movies, join the party and sit down for a chat with us.

All the trailers for the year's big ski films drop raising stoke levels and enticing skiers to go buy tickets for all the high energy premieres. These days there are dozens of offerings for our viewing pleasure and Jeff is one of the lucky few who gets to watch virtually all of them.

Isabelle Hanssen is a professional halfpipe skier from the flat-land nation of the Netherlands. She became obsessed with skiing after travelling to France her family's yearly ski vacation, "Dutch Week". Living in the Netherlands, Isabelle had to work hard to get her turns in. She would travel for hours on public transit, with all of her gear, just for the chance to ski at one of the countries few indoor slopes...

Maude Raymond's home is where her dog is and they are usually hanging out together in her beloved VW Westfalia camper van. After a long, awful year of terrible luck, injuries and personal setbacks Maude decided to simplify her life so she got a dog a van and hit the road. As a very creative person, she realized that she needed less to create more and that the nomad life offered her an opportunity to do just that. To be completely free to learn what she does and doesn't want in life.

Freedle Coty has been a filmer and director for Level 1's annual ski movies for the past 17 years. He's seen and done a lot within the ski industry including producing his own short-lived, ski themed podcast, "Snowblower"!

The always entertaining Parker White with his trademark mullet and quick wit joins the LPP this week. Skiing has been all he's really known but is also what he still really loves.

Leslie Anthony is a journalist, traveller, editor and has been telling (tele-ing) skiing's stories for the better part of three decades. He has literally written the book on it with 2010's, "White Planet: A Mad Dash Through Global Ski Culture". Les has been published in virtually every ski publication in the world and has been on the masthead of several magazines including editor of Powder and SBC Skier.

Julian Carr has a mantra. "Storytell, Produce, Monetize". Following this guideline, accompanied with excellent task management skills, Julian has not only become one of the most interesting professional skiers today but he has created two successful businesses; Discrete Clothing and the Cirque Series running events.

Reine Barkered is a Freeride World Tour Skier from Åre, Sweden. He is also a former World Champion. Since winning the overall title in 2012, Reine has been a consistent threat at every FWT event since. With his fast, hard charging, take no prisoners style of skiing, a podium finish is never out of the question.

Tyler Curle, like most of the guests on this show, grew up in a skiing family. Born and raised in Reno, both of Tyler's parents worked at Mt. Rose, the smaller, lesser skied hill in the Tahoe area. His dad was a groomer and his mom has had her hand in almost everything thing else at the mountain.

Jackie Paaso has been a competitive skier for most of her life. Originally from Foxborough Massachusetts, about an hour south-west of Boston, Jackie and her family ended up moving to Maine where she would harness her talent as a up and coming mogul skier. She would go on to collect many accolades throughout her mogul career and was touted as one of the best in the country. For some reason though, perhaps politics, she wasn't chosen for the US Olympic Team, which was her ultimate dream.

Markus Eder is one of the most well rounded skiers on the planet. It's easy to fall into hyperbole when trying to describe the merits of someone who you believe is the one of the best. In his case, it's the truth. Raised in Klausberg, in the German speaking area of Northern Italy, Markus started ski racing like most kids there did. After a few poor experiences, at age 14 Markus decided to tell his parents he was done with racing. His love for skiing and life took a huge turn when he was given a copy of PoorBoyz Productions, Happy Daze.

New Zealand's Jossi Wells has established himself as one of today's most versatile freeskiers. He's represented his country at the Olympics and has won X Games medals in 3 separate disciplines including big air, halfpipe and slopestyle where he won gold in 2016. He's achieved a lot in his career and there are two things he attributes his success to above all else; family and faith.

Tanner Hall has always been a polarizing figure. Most people have a opinion on who they think he really is. I've come to learn that those opinions are usually wrong. Tanner is competing on the Freeride World Tour and we connected in Golden BC, at the event at Kicking Horse . I expected we'd talk about things like his run and the mental and physical preparation leading up the events. The conversation we had got much deeper and far more personal.

Chris Booth is a fascinating person. He just spent the last 4 years building Black Crows Skis into one of the hottest and most desired brands in the industry. When a company has that rare type of momentum and is experiencing yearly, exponential growth you'd think that would be a time to reap the rewards of a lot of hard work. Perhaps even revel in your success. Not for Chris.

If you have been a consumer of ski culture over the last 15 years or so theres a good change you already know the name, Mike Rogge. Many of Mike's major life decisions to have been heavily influenced by his passion skiing.

Andrea Byrne, or "Dre" as she prefers to be called, is another fresh face on the scene. Dre recently moved from her home in Fernie to Whistler, BC to be embraced by the "arms of opportunity". For an up and coming skier, Whistler is definitely a place where opportunity abounds.

Speak softly and carry a big stick. In the case of Sam Kuch, its big skis. Based in Nelson BC, Sam grew up on the slopes of Whitewater ski resort and his skiing of late has has everyone else talking. Jonny Moseley is one of the reasons why this podcast exists. We discuss navigating social media as older guys who didn't grow up with it. We chat about his family life and his current life in the ski industry working with brands such as K2, Warren Miller Films and his home mountain Squaw Valley.

Jeff Thomas is without question one of top ski film makers in the industry. In this episode Jeff tells us about the arc of his career working for Poor Boyz, moving on to Switchback Entertainment and eventually Origin Design, where he made the amazing Whistler Blackcomb sponsored "Magnetic".

Chris Burkard is one of the most accomplished and sought after photographers today. Chris tells us how he got his start in photography and through several great stories about hard work, mistakes and sacrifice, we learn about how those lessons taught him to succeed in business, art and life.
