S2 Ep 131The Eartha Kitt Effect Why Women Are Happily Choosing the Single Life for Life

What if “happily ever after” starts and ends with just you?In this bold and expansive episode, Shan dives into The Eartha Kitt Effect—a cultural and emotional awakening inspired by the legendary performer Eartha Kitt, whose unapologetic views on love, compromise, and individuality continue to resonate decades later. This “effect” refers to the growing movement of people, especially women, who are choosing the single life on purpose, not by default.Joining Shan is Dr. Bella DePaulo, renowned social psychologist and author of Single at Heart, to unpack why some of the most fulfilled people are not in romantic relationships—and never want to be.Together, they explore: 🔥 Why Eartha Kitt’s viral interview moment ("Compromise? For what?") sparked a generation of self-partnership 🌱 How choosing not to center romance can lead to deeper personal growth, freedom, and connection 🧠 The science behind happiness in singlehood and the myth of the “incomplete” single person 💔 How media and social norms still stigmatize solo living—and what it looks like to rewrite your own happy ending Eartha’s now-iconic 1982 interview, where she laughs at the idea of compromising for a man, has become a symbol for self-honoring love. Her words echo across social media as more people step into identities that aren’t centered on romantic validation but on personal wholeness.Whether you're single by choice, rethinking long-term relationships, or simply seeking permission to define love your way—this episode is your affirmation.✨ The Eartha Kitt Effect is here so listen now and ask yourself: What if “happily ever after” starts and ends with you?🔗 Follow Bella DePaulo: Website: belladepaulo.com Books: Single at Heart, How We Live Now, and more – Amazon💞 Want more from Lover? → Meet Shan’s AI trained to give only her advice to you: loversbyshan.com → Get a free weekly Love Letter straight to your inbox: Join the newsletter → Join the Lovers Community: loversbyshan.com/community → Try free quizzes + worksheets: Deepen your relationships📩 For ads or inquiries: [email protected] omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S2 Ep 130No One Talks About How Hard Making Friends As An Adult Is ft. Krista Williams

Does making friends get harder as you get older? How the hell do I make friends? This episode is a rerun, and it's STILL very accurate. According to the American Perspective Survey, May 2021, many people are not satisfied with the size of their friendship group. About half of Americans (51 percent) report they are very satisfied or completely satisfied with the number of friends they have. 30 percent say they are only somewhat satisfied, and 17 percent say they are not too or not at all satisfied with the number of friends they have.If you fall in that range of little to no satisfaction in friendships, here’s what you need to know about creating a bond. So, how long does it take to make a new friend?- 50 hours before you consider them a casual friend - 90 hours before becoming real friends - 200hours- before becoming close friends source: 'Journal of Social and Personal Relationships' As the New York Times reported in 2012, there are “three conditions that sociologists since the 1950s have considered crucial to making close friends: proximity; repeated, unplanned interactions; and a setting that encourages people to let their guard down and confide in each other.” Cultivating emotionally intimate relationships, in other words, takes more work than just compliments. In this episode, I sit down with my friends Krista and Tabia, and we talk about our friendships, the ups, downs, and the work it takes to make them work. S2 Ep 119Alessia Cara Opens Up About How Death Anxiety Affects Her Relationships

Nothing good lasts. Right? In this deeply moving episode, Canadian singer-songwriter Alessia Cara joins Shan Boodram to explore the connection between intimacy, loss, and the fear of death (thanatophobia). Inspired by her song "Subside" from Love and Hyperbole, Alessia opens up about her personal journey with grief and how it shapes the way she loves and creates. Together, they dive into universal questions: How do we hold on to love while letting go of control? How does the fear of loss impact our relationships, intimacy, and even our everyday choices?Esther Perel talks about how desire and loss can sit right next to each other. This made me think about how those ideas show up in everyday relationships: the death of connection, the slow fading of intimacy, or the fear that something we’ve built might not last. When you zoom out, so much of how we attach, how we love, and even how we have sex is shaped by that deeper fear, what happens if I lose this? S2 Ep 109Tika Sumpter Breaks Down What Sex Education Looks At Home

What kind of relationship with sex do we want young people to have? In this episode myself and Tika Sumpter, known for her multifaceted career as an actor and creator, explore this question as parents and as people reparenting themselves. In this episode Tika shares her compelling personal story that shaped her approach to intimacy and education. Growing up in a Christian household, discussions about sex were often avoided or framed solely around negative consequences. This instilled fear and confusion about her own sexuality during her teenage years. In her twenties, Tika found herself navigating relationships without a clear understanding of her body or pleasure, often pretending to have a sexual IQ she hadn't yet developed. Therapy became a turning point, helping her reconnect with herself and embrace her sexual identity. Now, as a mother, Tika is determined to break this cycle for her daughter. On this episode, she opens up about her journey and shares how she is redefining sex and intimacy education in her household. Her goal is to raise her daughter to be a sexually and relationally competent individual, equipped with the tools and knowledge Tika wishes she had earlier in life.Tika is best known for her work on screen but did you know she also makes children’s content? She is the creator of The Adventures of Curious Cove, a podcast anchored by the beloved series Ella the Curious. This project reflects her passion for storytelling and education, making complex topics accessible and engaging for young audiences.Thank you BumbleThis episode of Lovers is presented by Bumble who encourages you to date your way. S1 Ep 107Forget What You Thought You Knew About Good Sex and Start HERE

Beyond Pleasure: Three Keys to Truly Fulfilling SexSex is at the intersection of life and humanity. For the majority of us, it’s how we got here and for parents, it’s how we will continue on after we are gone. We often hear the term “better” sex, which begs two questions: what does that mean? And, why is the sex we are currently having not good enough? In this episode we will define the goal of sex - regardless of the stage of the relationship and we will also discuss what prevents us from having sex that lives up to our desired potential. I’m going to take you on a journey as we explore the three sexual freedoms. Starting with discussing the power of freedom to, which I think describes the stage that myself and my husband/ the creative director of this podcast, Jared Brady are in. Then freedom from, which I discuss with my friends Yancy and Premika Leo. Finally we will talk about the Freedom not to, which I explore with my Lovers Community.Thank you BumbleThis episode of Lovers is presented by Bumble who encourages you to date your way. S1 Ep 91How I Stopped Searching for Love in Lost People feat. Leah Lamarr

How do we fix our desire for relationships with people that will inevitably become broken. And how do we stop ourselves from aligning healthy with boring? That’s what we’re talking about on this episode of Lovers and Friends. Attraction, whether emotional, physical, or psychological, is a complex process. It can be influenced by numerous factors, from biology to personal history. If someone finds themselves repeatedly attracted to individuals with certain undesirable characteristics (like the makeup of a fuckboy: charismatic but not reliable, fun to be around but not fun to be apart from because communication is not stable or when out of sight they’re unpredictable, they make big plans but don’t consistently make the small actions to move towards that goal especially when it comes to you, etc…), understanding the underlying causes and taking conscious steps to modify patterns of attraction can be beneficial. Here's a scientific, step-by-step approach:Self-awareness and reflection Next, Examine past patternsUnderstand the biologyCognitive-behavioral techniques Increase self-worthExpand your social circleEducate yourselfAvoid idealizationpractice mindfulnessFollow Leah Lamarrhttps://www.instagram.com/leahlamarrhttps://sociatap.com/leahlamarr/ Show Love to Our SponsorsZoc DocGo to Zocdoc.com/LOVERS and download the Zocdoc app for FREEHello FreshGo to http://HelloFresh.com/50lovers and use code 50lovers for 50% off plus free shippingSkimsTry The Cotton collection and more are available now at http://SKIMS.com Plus, get free shipping on orders over seventy five dollars! S1 Ep 89CONFESSIONS FROM A SEX COACH FOR MEN ft. Alex Grendi

Here’s what men don't tell you about how to be a better intimate partner…How do you get your man to go from bland to blazing in bed? Why should men stop watching porn? How do you encourage your man to ask for what he wants in bed? Are you missing out on pleasure by not using breathwork? Alex Grendi is a certified men’s sex coach who specializes in performance anxiety and erectile dysfunction. He’s here to talk about the importance of asking for what you want in the bedroom AND the struggle (especially for men) of figuring out what that REALLY is. Some of you have mentioned that you like the longer solo interview episodes and that’s what this is. S1 Ep 88An Uncommon Guide to the Kama Sutra (You'll Be Shocked By What We Found) feat. Seema Anand

The Kama Sutra, a renowned ancient Indian Sanskrit text, often perceived as a guide to sexual positions and techniques, is in fact a comprehensive guide to virtuous and gracious living. Written between 400 BCE and 200 CE by a sage named Vatsyayana, this text covers various aspects of life, including family, relationships, and personal conduct, amongst others. The Kama Sutra is a profound ancient text that offers wisdom not only on intimacy but on many facets of life. Its holistic approach to love and relationships makes it a rich resource for understanding ancient Indian society's perspectives on love, life, and morality. By exploring it in depth, you may find a plethora of wisdom that goes beyond the bedroom and offers insights into a virtuous and gracious life.On this episode we have Seema Anand guides us through what we missed while looking at the pictures of sex positions in the kama Sutra. Seema Anand is a London-based story-teller, mythologist, and narrative practitioner, known for her expertise in the field of ancient Asian narratives and their relevance in contemporary times. She is particularly well-recognized for her works in bringing to light the narratives surrounding female sexuality and empowerment that are deeply embedded in ancient texts, including the Kama Sutra. She has also authored several books where she delves into narratives of love, desire, and female beauty from an Asian perspective, enabling a deeper understanding and appreciation of these age-old philosophies.Seema holds a PhD in Narrative practices, positioning her as an authority in her field, which allows her to skilfully weave the ancient wisdom with modern narratives to foster understanding and empathy in today's society.Follow Seemahttps://www.instagram.com/seemaanandstorytelling/?hl=enhttps://linktr.ee/seemaanandstorytellingThanks to our SponsorsThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelphttp://betterhelp.com/loversGet a break from your thoughts, with BetterHelp. today to get 10% off your first month. S1 Ep 86What it REALLY Takes to Get in the Mood at the Same Time Ft. Elaine Welteroth & Jonathan Singletary

What does it take to get you in the mood? Maybe like some it’s strawberries and silk. Or maybe like many others, it’s a little more … nuanced than that. Jonathan Singletary and my husband Jared Brady teamed up to make a sexy song devoted to the women who do a lot and consequently, need a little more to get…there. When it comes to being horny aka getting in the mood, this conversation is often about what you can do to get there, but in this episode we go into what has to first be done, OR in some cases undone for it to become feasible for all parties. Getting horny seems simple when we look at it through a Super Bad lens, but when we insert real people with real lives we can appreciate this complex process that relies on an interplay of neurological, hormonal, emotional, and physiological cooperation. Thanks to Our SponsorsRitualhttp://Ritual.com/LOVERSRitual is offering my listeners 20% off during your first monthFabFitFunhttp://FabFitFun.com/LOVERSSign up at, customize your box, and get access to discounts up to 70% off on brands like Fenty, Free People, and Our Place - to name a few. S1 Ep 85This Is What Happens When You Marry Your Maybe feat. The Marriage Pact Couples

Finding the one is a life quest, one that many people never complete. Some people don’t pick anyone, some people pick the wrong one, and some give up hope looking for the one and start considering the two, three, four or five…There’s no shame in this, especially when you both acknowledge this choice not to settle, but to secure the future you want by selecting a partner who may not tick all of your boxes, but you know that in time and when you’re both ready to make a mutual commitment - you just might be able make it work with them. This acknowledgement that I’m talking about often comes in the form of a marriage pact. A marriage pact is an agreement made by two people that states that if we are both still single by a certain due date, we will marry each other. People make these pacts for a number of reasons: fear of commitment or because the connection is right, but the timing isn’t. However in most cases, it’s an all-else fails backup plan. But, what happens when that fails to? Or perhaps even scarier - when the plan actually succeeds? Now what? That is what we are exploring on this episode of Lovers and Friends with the cast of The Marriage Pact streaming now on The Roku Channel. You can stream #TheMarriagePact FREE on a Roku, the Roku mobile app and http://therokuchannel.com. It’s also available on Samsung Smart TVs and Amazon Fire Sticks. Thanks to the sponsors of this episode SKIMSCheckout the Cotton Collection and more at http://SKIMS.com they offer free shipping on orders over seventy-five bucks!Hello FreshGo to http://HelloFresh.com/50lovers and use code 50lovers for an amazing 50% off plus free shipping!Liquid IVGet 20% off when you go to http://LIQUIDIV.com and use code LOVERS at checkoutBetterHelpVisit http://BetterHelp.com/lovers today to get 10% off your first month.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 84The TRUTH About Freaky Women and Men Who Can’t Stay with Them feat. Ashley Cobb

Do you marry the person that you have the best sex with?Ashley Cobb opens up about being the best every man has ever had and also struggling to find a man who’s capable of having her. Plus the men previously known as Enjoy the Podcast link up to share their insights on the Madonna Whore complex. So, this complex describes a psychological phenomenon in which a man's perception of women is divided into two distinct categories: the Madonna and the whore. The Madonna is perfect, pure, and really caring. She's the nurturing type and has qualities like innocence and morality. This side of the complex is associated with safety, comfort, and connection. The whore, on the other hand, is associated with sexual desire, sensuality, and eroticism. This side of the complex involves fantasies or desires for more adventurous or taboo experiences and whores are seen as mysterious and unpredictable. If men have this complex and subscribe to its ideologies that a woman is either pure innocence or pure erroticism, it makes it tough for him to see one woman as both a sexual partner and someone he could have a real, serious relationship with.Watch full videos of Lovers and Friends podcasthttps://www.youtube.com/@loversandfriendspodcastThanks to the sponsors of this episodeHoneyLoveGet 20% Off your entire order (including the best bra you’ll own) with our exclusive link http://honeylove.com/LOVERS.BabbelReady to learn another language?
