Now at the halfway point of the season, everything is becoming clearer in the college football world from which teams are good and bad to who your conference champion contenders are. It's no different in the Big 12 Conference, as five teams have emerged as a favorites to take home the conference title... and one of those teams is the Arizona State Sun Devils football program. The same Sun Devils football team that was picked to finish last in the Big 12 is just one game out from first place in the conference at 5-1 and is playing as good of football as anyone else in their league. But as good as Arizona State Sun Devils football has been, we're left wondering if this team can win it all or if the season has been one big fluke. From what we've seen from Kenny Dillingham in year two, it feels unlikely that this is a fluke, but rather that he's ahead of the curve -- more so than we thought he would be in a complete rebuild of Arizona State Sun Devils football. Arizona State Sun Devils football has received good grades for most of the 2024 season thanks to great coaching and effort plus execution from the players. A win over the Utah Utes was no different for this week's grades. Kenny Dillingham was dialed in with a game plan to avenge last season's 55-3 loss to the Utes and it resulted in a masterful win and perhaps the best coaching of his young career. Coupled with coordinators Marcus Arroyo and Brian Ward, who both had excellent game plans, Arizona State Sun Devils football found remarkable success against a Utah team that is still a threat despite what people may be saying now. The offense once again ran through The People's Running Back Cam Skattebo to massive success thanks to a dynamite performance from the offensive line. It also made life easier for Sam Leavitt and the passing game. Defensively, the Sun Devils controlled the trenches, notched two sacks on Cam Rising, and hauled in three interceptions, including two from Caleb McCullough. With a combined effort from these units, Arizona State Sun Devils football overcame the odds and beat a Utah Utes football team that was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 Conference. Arizona State Sun Devils football was delivered a hefty blow on Wednesday when Kenny Dillingham announced Sam Leavitt was out for 2-4 weeks with a rib injury he sustained in the team's win over the Utah Utes. Arizona State Sun Devils football is 5-1 on the season with some impressive wins, but perhaps none more so than their takedown of the Utah Utes this past weekend. Arizona State Sun Devils football has been tested all season with tough games and they've responded with a 4-1 record including their first win the Big 12 Conference last weekend against Kansas. The book on the Arizona State Sun Devils football recruiting scandal during the COVID-19 pandemic has finally been closed. Former defensive coordinator and leader recruiter Antonio Pierce was issued an eight-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA for his contributions to the University's recruiting violations during the dead period amidst the COVID-19 world pandemic. Pierce, now the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, will be unable to coach in college football again for the next eight years without a persuasive argument and plea to the NCAA for reinstatement. This comes months after former head coach Herm Edwards was dealt his five-year show-cause penalty for his complicity in the scandal. With everyone involved punished with the sanctions for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program concluded at the end of the year, the book on one of the darkest eras of Arizona State University athletics can finally be closed and put away forever. Bye week number one has come and passed for Arizona State Sun Devils football and it's time for Kenny Dillingham and his team to prepare for the second third of the year. The Arizona State Sun Devils football team will enjoy a bye week this weekend after a 3-1 start to the new year. Kenny Dillingham's squad has outperformed the expectations of likely everybody who predicted the Sun Devils, thanks to many factors including a culture that the players, coaches, and fans have bought into and so much more. Even in a frustrating loss, Arizona State Sun Devils football had many learning opportunities after falling on the road to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The loss was nothing to be ashamed of, and a 3-1 start to the season is still phenomenal. With that said the Sun Devils were humbled and had plenty to work on and fix heading into their first bye week of the season. Arizona State Sun Devils football didn’t grade as badly as one would expect following a loss and that’s because there were bright spots to build off moving forward. Of course, there was a reason that the Sun Devils lost to Texas Tech and that affected their grades. The offense needs tinkering when it comes to connecting on the deep ball, committing to their strengths, and finding ways to improve the offensive line. A defense that usually dominates was exposed at times and needs refining as well. It wasn't the way the Arizona State Sun Devils football team wanted to start their tenure in the Big 12 Conference following a loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock. After all, the Sun Devils were riding a 3-0 start into the game with their confidence high and a belief that they could beat anyone. Unfortunately, they were served some good old-fashioned humble pie by the Red Raiders and found themselves on the wrong side of a frustrating loss. The Sun Devils were outplayed by Texas Tech on offense and defense but certainly did themselves no favors with dumb penalties (even in a ref show) that only made things more difficult for the team to get back into a game they fell behind early in. There was a lot that went wrong for Arizona State Sun Devils football in the loss, but there was still plenty of good to take away from this game. Cameron Skatteboo is still a rockstar, and the defense made quick adjustments to slow down the Red Raiders before they could get rolling. It's game day for Arizona State Sun Devils football, but more importantly, it's the program's debut in the Big 12 Conference. The Sun Devils are in Lubbock, Texas to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in what should be a high-scoring and exciting game. Arizona State Sun Devils football is about to open Big 12 Conference play, and it is no small task for Kenny Dillingham and his program to debut in their new conference. Big 12 Conference play has finally arrived for Arizona State Sun Devils football! There has been a ton of build-up to this moment and that excitement is high in Tempe for ASU's debut in their new conference. The slate of games is quite the challenge, with the Sun Devils set to face three currently ranked teams, five teams in the preseason poll, and some big-time risers who have exceeded expectations the way that Arizona State Sun Devils football has. Arizona State Sun Devils football is off to a fabulous 3-0 start to the 2024 season and it's been everything a fan could ask for. Thursday night was nothing short of a slugfest for Arizona State Sun Devils football as they battled the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos for a hard-fought and well-earned victory. The game had plenty of ups and downs between blown coverages and big plays allowed on defense to stalled-out drives and poor offensive line play on offense. However, Kenny Dillingham was able to get the Sun Devils to answer back every time Texas State did something big so they were never out of the game. But most importantly, Dilly and coordinators Marcus Arroyo and Brian Ward dialed up an insane second-half adjustment for both sides of the football that ultimately helped put the game away when it mattered most. Arroyo's offense trusted Sam Leavitt's arm and it led to big connections to Jordyn Tyson and Chamon Metayer, while also still relying on Cameron Skattebo to be the bell cow. Ward had his defense play a lights-out second half that included two turnovers and a turnover on downs for Texas State's final three drives of the game. And just like that, Arizona State Sun Devils football is 3-0 to start the year after being picked to finish last in the Big 12 Conference. It's once again game day for Arizona State Sun Devils football and that means it's once again time to preview ASU's tilt, this time against the Texas State Bobcats. Both the Sun Devils and Bobcats are off to 2-0 starts to the season, with the former surpassing every expectation given to them in the preseason. The game serves as a good test to see where these programs are at and whether they can sustain their early-season success. It's also the Sun Devils first road game of the season, and if Kenny Dillingham plans to take down the Bobcats and get ASU off to its first 3-0 start since 2019, then they'll have to execute a balanced attack on offense and maintain their edge (literally and figuratively) on defense. The Sun Devils ran wild on Mississippi State last Saturday thanks to Cameron Skattebo's historic day on the ground and he'll likely continue to be at the forefront of an offense that will likely lean on their running game more often than not. However, they need to keep Sam Leavitt more involved than he was a week ago. Defensively, the Sun Devils face a Bobcats offense that already has almost 1,000 total yards and can score at will. Arizona State Sun Devils football visits San Marcos, Texas to play the Texas State Bobcats football team tomorrow night for their final out-of-conference game, and the game has more weight to it than what it appears to have on the surface. On the line for Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils is a chance to start the 2024 season 3-0, a mark they haven't achieved since 2019. For a Sun Devils football program that has won just three games in each of the last two seasons, calling that an accomplishment to match that win total in three weeks would be an understatement. It would also be three wins over teams who expect to go bowling this postseason and programs that match up well to where the Sun Devils are now. The bottom line, Arizona State Sun Devils football has a lot on the line in this game and a win can impact the rest of your season. Arizona State Sun Devils football is 2-0 to start the season after a statement win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs football program. It delivered the Sun Devils its first-ever win over an SEC program while showing their progress from year one to year two under Kenny Dillingham. The win featured several strong performances headlined by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Cameron Skattebo and his nation-high 297 scrimmage yards including 262 rushing yards. As a whole, the team played well. Still, it wasn't without its warts including a nonexistent passing attack, the failure to counter the Bulldogs' second-half adjustments, and some uncharacteristic and costly penalties. By the skin of their teeth and thanks to two critical drives in the second half, Arizona State Sun Devils football fought through adversity and hung on to take down the Mississippi State Bulldogs football program. The Sun Devils got their first win over an SEC team, but that's not remotely the story here. No, the story of this game was Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils held on to win a close game after dominating the first half. The team admitted they got comfortable while Mississippi State made halftime adjustments and got back into this game. Week two is here for Arizona State Sun Devils football as Kenny Dillingham leads this program to battle the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team at Mountain America Stadium. The Sun Devils, who have never won a game against an SEC team, must be prepared for a game that is the perfect benchmark for Dillingham and this program. After throttling the Wyoming Cowboys in week one, the Sun Devils are riding a high into their second game of the season and should feel good about their chances of starting the season 2-0. However, being complacent will cost them this game. To win, the Sun Devils must continue playing to their strengths and trusting their elite defense. The Bulldogs are rolling out a veteran quarterback in Blake Shapen who can beat you with his arm and his legs along with an offense that dropped 57 points in their opening game against Eastern Kentucky. Matched with a more than quality defense, Mississippi State Bulldogs football can hang with anyone and will give Arizona State Sun Devils football fits. Eyes will once again be on Sam Leavitt following a great performance in his Sun Devil debut, but he'll need the running game to pick up where it left off. Arizona State Sun Devils football is set to host the Mississippi State Bulldogs football program this weekend for their second game of the season, and it's a big one. The Sun Devils are searching for their first win over an SEC team in program history, but more importantly, Kenny Dillingham is facing a critical game that will show off where he and the Arizona State Sun Devils football program is at in year two. With the Sun Devils coming off consecutive three-win seasons, the expectations were rock bottom for the team, but after a dominating week one win over the Wyoming Cowboys, suddenly the hype is getting generated. The question is whether or not that game was a fluke, and Mississippi State presents a terrific opportunity to test out that theory. The Bulldogs are also a program under a new head coach Jeff Lebby and are seeking a return to prominence and annual bowl game contention. Like ASU, the Bulldogs crushed their week one game against Eastern Kentucky and will be looking to build off of that in Tempe. With both teams out to prove something, this proves to be a game with massive ramifications for both programs. You couldn't dream up a better game to open the new season if you tried for Kenny Dillingham and the Arizona State Sun Devils football team after they pummeled the Wyoming Cowboys in Tempe. Across the board, the Sun Devils dominated this game. On offense, the Sun Devils did whatever they felt like doing. Defensively, ASU pitched one of the best performances we've seen from this program in a LONG TIME. Even the coaching and play-calling were on point. It felt like everyone played at an exceptional or better level to kick off the year. Sam Leavitt had a dream debut in maroon and gold with over 200 total yards, two touchdowns, and five completions of 20 or more yards to five different receivers. The running game dialed up 241 rushing yards on a whopping 49 carries, good for 4.9 YPC plus two rushing touchdowns. The defense was otherworldly with three sacks, three turnovers including two defensive touchdowns, allowing under 120 total yards of offense, and surrendering just three third down conversions of 13 tries. Marcus Arroyo coached a near-perfect game offensively with a heavy approach and Brian Ward was perfect on defense. Kenny Dillingham placed Arizona State Sun Devils football in the best position possible to improve from last year's team and it was on full display against Wyoming. Something special is going on in Tempe for the Arizona State Sun Devils basketball program right now. Bobby Hurley is recruiting his butt off after pulling in the number nine recruiting class in the nation this year, including five-stars Jayden Quaintance, the highest-rated recruit in program history, and Joson Sanon. Things are looking up for the Sun Devils after a dreadful season a year ago, but the future seems to be getting brighter. Two top-20 recruits in next year's class, Perry High School product Koa Peat (number five) and top-five California recruit Tounde Yessoufou (number 20) have been making headlines for the program. Peat just had a visit this weekend and the Sun Devils are in the hunt for his commitment. Yessoufou just canceled his upcoming visit to UCLA and has moved his visit to Arizona State University up to this weekend. In his debut for Arizona State Sun Devils football, redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt looked as good as you could ask him to be and then some. Simply put, the confidence displayed by the 19-year-old quarterback making his fifth career collegiate start at a brand-new program was beyond impressive. Leavitt was delivering strikes down the field and then beating Wyoming Cowboys football with his legs as a dual-threat running QB. It felt like Leavitt was doing whatever he wanted in the game and it has us excited for what comes next. Along with a fabulous stat line were plenty of standout throws and distribution to his pass catchers. Again, it was impressive. Of course, no performance is perfect, and there are several areas where Leavitt can improve, such as pocket presence, touch passing, and awareness to avoid negative plays. There was tons to build off of after game one and we'll be looking forward to what comes next as he progresses throughout the year, but he has a big test coming this week. There's no better way to kick off the new season than with a win, but Arizona State Sun Devils football took it a step further and delivered a dominant showing against the Wyoming football program in what was one of the team's best performances in years. Kenny Dillingham had everything dialed up along with his coordinators Marcus Arroyo and Brian Ward as the Sun Devils did anything and everything they wanted to do offensively and defensively. ASU ran for nearly 250 yards, passed for 258 yards, recorded three sacks, and forced three turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Arizona State Sun Devils football has a difficult task ahead of it in 2024 when it comes to the wide receiver and tight end positions. The roster underwent heavy changes this offseason, but no positions were left with more question marks than the receiver and tight end spots after Elijhah Badger and Jalin Conyers opted to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Their departures left massive holes on the depth chart but also from a talent and personnel standpoint with both players having a ton of potential to play multiple roles for the team. Now, the Sun Devils will look to a cast of new players to try and step up for the departed Badger and Conyers. Thankfully, there are several quality candidates at the ready to step in and help the transition. Troy Omeire and Jordyn Tyson will largely be responsible for helping the wide receiver room stay competent, while Chamon Metayer and Markeston Douglas will be tasked with taking over at tight end. Arizona State Sun Devils football has no shortage of talent at the running back position entering the 2024 season and the group is likely to be the key to all of their success if they are to have any. A room led by veteran Cameron Skattebo will have a lot of pressure laid on its shoulders as Kenny Dillingham incorporates a pro-style approach offensively along with a young QB in Sam Leavitt. Arizona State Sun Devils football has officially declared redshirt freshman Sam Leavitt as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Leavitt has impressed since arriving in Tempe in the spring and has tools to help him succeed including Kenny Dillingham calling the shots. Of course, Leavitt will need help from everyone to help make the dream work, starting with the offensive line. The Sun Devils returned key players to the group and added to that room this offseason to make the unit deeper and more talented and now the pressure is on the group to step up and perform at a high level... after all, the success of the offense might just be tied to them.
