Things broke open in the 7th with a four run outburst that expanded the lead to 10-3 after a Luis Torrens 3-run HR. Kodai Senga wasn't great tonight for the Mets, but battled through four innings to keep the Mets in it. The bullpen, however, was outstanding. The New York Mets quest for a sweep of the Atlanta Braves was dashed behind a quiet day for the bats and a rough outing for Gregory Soto, as they fell 4-3. Despite a rally in the 9th, the Mets still are searching for their first win this season when trailing after eight innings. The 8th inning is where things went south for the Mets. Gregory Soto, who had been excellent since coming over in a trade, had his first meltdown and allowed two runs to score. Offensively, the Mets couldn't crack Bryce Elder for the second straight outing. Mark Vientos hit a home-run to put the Mets in front, but missed chances to break the game open. David Peterson started for New York and looked like typical David Peterson through the first five innings, avoiding any major trouble. Trouble was found in the 6th, however. With 1st and 2nd and two outs, Peterson walked the bases loaded and then allowed the game-tying hit. Kodai Senga struggled tonight against the Washington Nationals, as the Mets fell in DC by a final of 5-4. The first two innings saw Senga on cruise control, utilizing his full arsenal and snagging a couple of strike-outs. However, that was where it ended, as Senga started to lose command and left a lot of his offspeed offerings up and in the middle of the zone. Washington was able to jump out to a 4-0 lead before Brett Baty hit another TOWERING home run to get the Mets on the board. And then it was the 6th inning when the Mets mounted a comeback. A pair of opposite field doubles from Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil pulled the Mets back within one run. They were able to load the bases in the inning but couldn't get the tying run across. They did get the tying run on base in the 9th inning, but an inning ending double play dashed any chance the Mets would get their first win after trailing through 8 innings. The New York Mets defeated the Seattle Mariners in the Little League Classic by a final of 7-3. In doing so, the Mets not only picked up a series win but won back to back games for the first time since July 27th. Offensively, it was the baby Mets who led the charge. Francisco Alvarez got things started with an RBI double. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos tacked on a pair and the Mets were off to the races with a 3-0 lead. It was Vientos who handed down the big blow, with his three-run opposite field homer in 5th that pushed the Mets lead to 5. Clay Holmes toed the rubber for the Mets and delivered probably the best that could have been expected from Holmes this time of year. It was five innings of one run ball for the Mets starter. Perhaps this is the momentum building performance that the Mets needed to get hot down stretch, and they''ll get to put that to the test starting on Tuesday in Washington against the Nationals. Pete Alonso slugged a couple of home runs, becoming the New York Mets all-time home run king, and the Mets snapped their losing streak by defeating the Atlanta Braves, 13-5. It was about as perfect of a night as you could draw up for the Mets. They crushed six home runs, scored all 13 runs with two outs and saw some breakout performances. Alonso is the lead story, with his home run in the 3rd, passing Darryl Strawberry to become the Mets all-time home run leader with 253 career home runs as a New York Met. It would stay that way for long, as Alonso added another to get to 254. Francisco Alvarez also powered two home runs out, along with an RBI double. The Mets backstop continues to swing a hot bat since returning from a stint in the minors. As for the pitching, it was a so-so night for Clay Holmes, who hit trouble in the 4th. Justin Hagenman had a nice night mopping up and saving the bullpen's big arms for the rest of the series. The New York Mets erased a five-run deficit to force the game into extras, but a defensive miscue allowed the Guardians to plate two runs without a hit, and the Mets fell 7-6.Sean Manaea got the start and through the first five innings, it looked like vintage Sean Manaea. The sixth inning however saw a blow up from Manaea, giving the Guardians a five spot.The Mets offense had a quick response. After a pair of miscues defensively by the Guardians, Pete Alonso slugged career home run number 251 to get the Mets on the board. In the 8th inning, it was the top of the lineup getting the job done. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto got things started with singles, and it Alonso along with Mark Vientos that plated the runs to tie the game. A golden chance in the 9th for New York, saw them load up the bases but were unable to get the winning run across. The 10th saw a defensive miscue from Brett Baty give the Guardians back the lead and then a sac-fly added on the insurance run. An emotional roller-coaster, the Mets will need to quickly bounce back tomorrow with Clay Holmes on the bump. The New York Mets have a pair of problems going for them right now, and both were on display in Sunday afternoon's series finale loss to the San Francisco Giants.
