Remembering Danny Williams (1924-2019)
Hello and welcome to episode 35 of the Loathed Strangers. For this instalment myself and Vic Morgan remember and celebrate legendary Town manager Danny Williams who passed away, aged 94, in February 2019.We discuss Danny's Town career, his players and the seasons of his two spells as Swindon Town manager (1965-1969 and 1974-1978).Danny successfully managed to blend the remaining members of 'Bert's Babes' (Thomas, Trollope, Smart, Rogers) with his own canny eye for spotting talent (Downsborough, Butler, Burrows, Harland, Heath, Smith, Noble, Penman) which culminated in Town's greatest ever achievement, the 1969 League Cup Final win over Arsenal. If we retrace the steps of how and why our love for Swindon Town started in the first place the foundations, for many of us, are likely to be laid by the legacy of Danny Williams’ achievements as manager of Town and that's whether your first game was in 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009 or 2019,I started supporting Swindon because my dad was a fan. He started going when Danny Williams was in charge. Many of our parents, grandparents, other family members, friends or neighbours who encouraged us to go to the County Ground were originally enticed themselves by the magnificent era of the 1960's. An era spearheaded by Danny Williams. So long, Danny. Rest well and thanks. All of the #LSPOD guests volunteer their own time to discuss football with me and I’m very much grateful for it.Thanks, as always, for listening and I really hope you enjoy!Rich----------------------------------------------Facebook: The Loathed Strangershttps://twitter.com/LoathedStrangerhttps://www.instagram.com/theloathedstrangers/[email protected] by Matthew Kilfordhttps://www.matthewkilford.com/Artwork by John Daglishhttps://www.instagram.com/johndaglish/Producer: K.P.*The Loathed Strangers is an independent podcast with no affiliation to Swindon Town Football Club. Ep 12Sam Morshead
Welcome to Episode TWELVE of the Loathed Strangers Podcast. Still just about delivering that one instalment per week. Phew! For this episode I was joined by award winning journalist and Town fan, Sam Morshead, who like each and every guest of the podcast to date was an absolute delight to talk to.But Wow!Sam talks of his time covering Swindon Town for the Advertiser and Total with the sort of passion and enthusiasm that you'd come to expect from somebody who has followed the club since he was knee high to grasshopper (or about 8 years old, whatever). The Andrew Black EraThe Jed McCrory EraThe Lee Power EraWe got through loads but probably missed a fair whack out too. Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did whilst recording. Enthralling insight to a batshit crazy era.WARNING: Swearing included. Except the C-Bomb. I censored the C-Bomb.
