S4 Ep 985Renew Yourself, Renew Your World - EP 985
Today we talk about changing the one person entirely in your control: You. I will also reveal my word of the year for 2025, and discuss our usual Monday segments. Featured event: Night Before Christmas Series starts TOMORROW! They will release at 5pm Central each day and lead up to the final reading on December 24. Sponsor 1: DiscountMylarBags.com Sponsor 2: AgoristTaxAdvice.com Listener Feedback So as to yesterday's podcast. I have a family member that doesn't respect anyone's boundaries. They instigate the uncomfortable conversations just to cause tension. They bring up horrible things that have happened to you and rub them in your face and laugh about it. I cut this person out of my life for 5+ years. I was so much happier and healthier mentally. Me not having this person in my life caused family tension that was constantly thrown at me. This person is my mother. Two years ago my mother's husband got very sick, I chose to go see her and him right before he passed away. When I opened that door, the rest of my family got off my back. I currently have a "relationship" with my mother, but the more I give the more she wants. She acted somewhat normal for about a year and now she is back to her constant digging and trying to start shit. I have to ignore her comments and change the subject regularly. Pretty much my whole family dynamic is toxic. I have a few more crazy Ian's hanging from the tree. Deflecting and subject changing is a skill, but it's also exhausting. Stepping away to breath is also important. Limiting time spent is a requirement for sanity. And honestly a couple of beers is one way I stay calm at family functions. For now I am choosing to put myself in this situation in moderation. I hate it and have begun to dread it again, but it is a choice I have made to keep the peace between other family members. My best recommendation is to cut the toxic people out of your life no matter who they are, and don't let them back in because they won't change. Because you are worth so much more than being someone's doormat whoever they are to you. End of year Schedule Tuesday Live with Becky Cook and Toolman Tim Cook, 9:30am tomorrow Friday Homestead Happenings, 2pm Friday Two Week Break Tales from the Prepper Pantry Dried herbs and teas are jarred up (finally). Was stoked to see I had some Mexican Tarragon which tastes kinda like anise and is great in teas. We plan to grow more next year Beef breakfast sausage experiment (4.5 pound batches) The German goodies are gone from Aldi in our area - cheesecake - I waited to get a stollen until it was close to the party so I wasnt tempted because good choices start at the grocery store Weekly Shopping Report from Joe Our most recent shopping trip was on Thursday; Sonia was out of cream cheese, so we went early. We went first into Dollar Tree. Stock levels looked good. I could definitely see signs of rotation with some new products in the drinks area, and depletion (but not yet exhaustion) of others. We did not go into Home Depot, but the online price of a 2x4x8 is still $3.85. Aldi was last. Stock levels didn't look notably different from our usual Friday visits. My preferred variety of chocolate (70% cacao) was back in stock, but there wasn't much of it. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.96; whole milk: $2.87 (-); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.69; butter: $3.49 (-); bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.69; sugar: $2.69; flour: $1.79; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.99 (-). They had cantaloupes this week. I'm not sure about the untainted regular gasoline. A Weigels that we don't normally visit last had it at $3.49/gallon, which is a 20c decrease, but I don't recall what my usual station(s) were showing. Being retired, my need for gasoline is dramatically reduced. Frugality Tip Today is a short and sweet simple tip. Whenever we are out shopping or whatnot I pack a small cooler with drinks and a reusable ice block. I also keep an extra insulated tumbler full of water in the car at all times. Stopping to grab a drink adds up quickly, especially with someone that drinks soda. So stop yourself from grabbing that convenience store overpriced drink and just pack a small cooler. Happy saving y'all. ~Margo Operation Independence Nothing to report other than some advice: Dont overspend for Christmas - enjoy it but dont over spend Main topic of the Show: Renew Yourself, Renew Your World Build the life you choose on your terms Choice What does LFTN want as a community next year? S4 Ep 982Setting Boundaries Is Kindness - EP 982
Today we talk about setting boundaries and how it is a kindness to do this sooner rather than later. Just in time for holiday gatherings. We will also cover our usual Monday segments. Featured Event: Mastersingers Christmas Concert, Dec 15, 3pm in Cookeville, TN Sponsor 1: DiscountMylarBags.com Sponsor 2: AgoristTaxAdvice.com Livestream Schedule Shifted to afternoons this week because of Gift Coffee Orders Tuesday, 2pm with Ready Riflemen Thursday, 6pm, The Great American Preparedness Tour Live Friday, 2pm, Homestead Happenings with the Tactical Redneck Tales from the Prepper Pantry Half a cow arrived, the whole one will arrive sometime after Christmas Cheated with fresh store veggies this week, because we can 😀 Still need to reorganize the freezers Prepper pantry Redo has stalled and I may see if I can hire someone to help Post road trip easy meal: Burgers, salads from the trip, and a dish from Knighthawk Frugality Tip I have a favorite pair of headphones I use, mostly in the morning when someone else is still sleeping. They are the over the ear kind, not buds. I picked them up to use and the coating on them was peeling, and when I put on my ears it was itchy. I'm not the one to throw them out and buy a new pair. Also I'm not a crochet kinda girl (yet), but there's a crochet solution as well. I cut off the top few inches of an old sock (which I keep as rags , so had a some) Turned it inside out, rolled it down in half and put them over the headphones. And honestly the sound improved as well. So get crafty to get more use out of the things you have Main topic of the Show: Setting Boundaries Is KindnessSome weeks, I am not sure what would be the best fit for an LFTN Podcast but today, I had a nice chat with Jenni and she pointed out that lots of people struggle at the holidays with feelings of guilt because they are obligated to see family. Family of the kind that make them uncomfortable or are darn right abusive. So today, we are going to talk about boundaries, setting boundaries, and why it is a kindness. Story 1: The Friend or Employee Who Makes Small Mistakes on a Paid Project, John Willis wanting a different set up at SRF. How to do this kindly: Do it with the correct mindset Do it one on one Be clear on the issue and on the solution to the issue. It is 100% unfair to point out something that needs to be different without clarity on what the steps to making it happen are - even if it is "reflect on the thing and let me know what you plan to do to change it." Why it is kind to say something sooner rather than later small correctable things can become big problems over time. Most people are willing to adjust if they know a reasonable adjustment is needed What if the boundary was ignored? Then you know where you stand and can make future decisions sooner. So in general, being clear and setting reasonable boundaries can be very hard because hard conversations need to be had. There are some common ways to make these conversations reasonable. Timing - heat of the moment issue and Upset Ian story Jenni's way to walk away in the moment My way to walk away in the moment Following up, how to bring it up (Avoid the conversation shanghai TRAP) Clear, kind communication based on what you can control (you), what the issue is (How something they do makes you feel), what you want to see be different, Consequences. (Drunkenness Story). ALENON can be a good place to go for learning about setting boundaries that are hard to set Consistency and follow through - once it is set, stick to your boundary in a kind way Scenario Politics or religious pressure at a family Christmas gathering Unwanted male attention at a party and "being polite" Bad timing for a visit Pull from audience A Hard question for you - what are you doing to invite problems with your boundaries? Bringing up politics or things you know will lead to a reaction (The global warming mug) Swooping in to rescue people who then take advantage of you Other ideas? I don't know who needs to hear this but it is ok to set boundaries with family. You dont have to go to the thing. You dont have to stay at the thing. You dont have to participate in the white elephant if you cant afford it or just dont want to. You dont have to have the drink. And the same goes for staying – you can just say Im headed home now. Ir "Im leaving. But a caution - I avoid saying "Ive got to go" to get out of a place where people pushed past my boundaries. I dont want them to think I left because of a conflicting obligation. Forgiveness and boundaries. Make it a great week! GUYS! Don't forget about the cookbook, Cook With What You Have by Nicole Sauce and Mama Sauce. S4 Ep 979Handmade Homestead Gift Ideas - Ep 979
Today, we have our annual brainstorm on gifts we can make from the home or homestead. If things are tight, or even if they aren't, handmade gifts with lots of love and thought are awesome. Featured Event: Webinar Announcement For December, Christmas Gathering RSVP DEC 21 Sponsor 1: EMP Shield, Coupon Code LFTN Sponsor 2: TheWealthsteadingPodast Livestream Schedule First Tuesday Coffee Chat, 9:30am Tomorrow Friday Homestead Happenings, 9:30am Tales from the Prepper Pantry Freezer reoorganization week Preparing for the SOE Party - food plans from the pantry Still working on the redo of the prepper pantry and it's cold Thanksgiving Leftover Ideas: Holler Stew and dressing, potato pancakes with cheese Weekly Shopping Report from Joe We took our usual trip on Friday, deciding to risk possible Black Friday traffic, but it wasn't too bad. As we approached Dollar Tree, we could see that the China-mart lot was packed, but it did not extend as far as the Dollar Tree parking area. Next we split, Sonia going into Hobby Lobby and I into Lowe's. Both were very busy, but she said she had little wait. Although we did not go into Home Depot, the online price of a 2x4x8 is still $3.85. Aldi was next. Wet cat food has returned, so I got a couple of 12-can boxes. Eggs are no longer marked limit 2. There was very little of even the type of chocolate I normally get, not just the variety I prefer; the shelf area was vacant, although still marked for it. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.96 (+); whole milk: $3.03; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.69 (+); butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.69 (+); sugar: $2.69; flour: $1.79; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.99 (-). They also had no cantaloupes. A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip When you have a gathering and you put things out for drinks like sliced lemons, limes and oranges there are usually leftovers. What I do is put them in the freezer and when I'm going to make tea I'll take out a slice or two in the morning for a hot cup of tea in the afternoon or evening. Alternatively I'll freeze them in ice cube trays and use in iced tea in warmer weather. So save the citrus and enjoy it later Operation Independence Setting a schedule for classes to be hosted at the Holler Homestead next year. Cheese, for example. Main topic of the Show: Handmade Homestead Gift Ideas Polished and sealed wooden handle for tools (Either make yours in the shop or buy the base handle and do the work) Seeds you have saved with a write up about them Recipe booklet (Printable or printed) THE CHEESECAKE, pair with cookies if that is your jam Jams, Jellies, and chutneys Tallow and Birdseed (careful, this one can get messy) Pot Holders, quilted, with non-plastic fabric. S4 Ep 969Five Oft-Overlooked Preps For The Homesteader - EP 969
Today we talk about five things that most homesteaders deprioritize in their preps as well as out usual Monday segments. Featured Events - an update Sponsor 1: DiscountMylarBags.com Sponsor 2: EMPShield.com, Coupon code for $50 off - LFTN Livestream Schedule Tuesday, 9:30am: Coffee Chat with John Willis and Jack Spirko Friday, 9:30am: Homestead Happenings for November 8, 2024 Tales from the Prepper Pantry Best year ever for meat organization - what worked Harvest chili Weekly Shopping Report Aldi was our only stop this week. They still have not restocked wet cat food, in fact I'm not even sure I saw the individual cups. They did have a normal amount of toilet paper. The chocolate I like was back in stock after being gone last week, but there wasn't much of it. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39 (the tag was back); eggs: $2.15 (-); whole milk: $2.88; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.59 (-); sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.49. I did check the online price of a 2x4x8 at Home Depot, and it is still $3.85. A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip Halloween is my favorite holiday. We have a big Halloween party every year. I try to pick the theme in advance and then start gathering decorations when Halloween items go on clearance. For Halloween clearance shopping this year (so far) we got $300 retail value of items for less than $100. So hit the stores after the holiday and get more bang for your buck. Happy savings y'all Operation Independence Cheese Class and Other Events Main topic of the Show: Five Oft-Overlooked Preps For The Homesteader With all the unrest in the economy, looming worldwide war, accelerating technology and the push from the ruling class (for lack of a better term) to keep we peons unhealthy, just in debt enough that we are too scared to go our own way, and obsessed with the "two" options that are the "only" options so that we fight with ourselves instead of see the true enemy, is it any wonder that, more and more, people want to get out of the cities and homestead? In a disaster a homestead is where you want to be, right? When you homestead, you go all in on Bugging In. 2 is 1 Appalachia and resilience - it's not just that it is rural. It is forgotten, abused, walked on, and easily cut off so people there rely on one another already Typical homestead journey: chickens, garden, canning, wood heat, bigger livestock, hobbies like spinning or woodworking or whatnot. Homesteaders have food covered - sort of. When was the last time you went to the feed store? Mindset shift: prepare for the most likely problems, not wwIII and you will weather wwIII better than if you "prepare" for it. FIVE OVERLOOKED PREPS Medical: Supplies for humans and livestock TRAINING, EDC - what do you have on you, Organization Bugging Out: Your plan is to bug in. Heck, my plan is to bug in. What is your plan if you have to leave quickly? Where are you going? How are you getting there? What will you use to travel? What about your livestock? Security: Beyond carrying a gun. TRAINING. What is the plan (who does what) if there is a two legged threat. What about four legged problems? How hard is it to get to your place? (Thorny hedges, security fencing, etc) Do you know when someone is coming? Can you fight if you have to? Like can you really? Food for livestock: Be honest. What is the plan? What is it if you can't just fall back on TSC? How do you regenerate the food? And be honest? How much do you rely on the grocery store for humans. (Community Connections/Underground Network) Fitness: Can you do everything needed by hand? Are you healthy? What is your plan to get healthy? Is everyone in your family fit? (Dedicated space, nutrition, living apothecary,) Communication (Bonus item): Does everyone KNOW what the plans are, know where things are, also get training, know how to communicate if you bug in vs bug out? As a homesteader you are likely more prepared in many ways than preppers in the city with lots of stuff and no skills, but how do we weather things for real? By getting better one day at a time and by eating the frog that we are avoiding so that we dont end up in a situation where we need a skill we could have built and we just didnt because it was distasteful. They also have TP and paper towels. Home Depot: A 2x4x8 was unchanged from last week, at $3.85. Quickly looking at some tools, they have reduced the quantities of a lot of other brands like Klein in favor of Milwaukee, but pegboards were full. Aldi: Once again, they had almost no wet cat food, just individual small "peel" cups. There were actually some price decreases this week. Staple prices were: eggs: $2.15 (-); whole milk: $2.88; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $3.99 (-); sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.49. They again have a small amount of TP in stock A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip from Margo Have you ever had a bird peck your window non-stop. Like wake you up and then you have a constant headache for weeks or months because it's trying to kill it's reflection?! Don't waste your money on all the gadgets to keep birds away like plastic owls, window clings and spinners. Go to the store and buy a $5 cloth shower curtain and hang it on the outside of your window with a couple of cup hooks. It lets light in and can get rained on and most important, it works. So save your money on all the things that say they deter birds and just block their reflection. I did this two years ago and still have the same shower curtain up on the bedroom window and we sleep peacefully. Operation Independence The sheep are split and ready for a visit from the ram. Lamb futures we hope! Murphy likes to visit right after Self Reliance Festival and other busy times. Murphy came over last week. Or did he? The funny thing about Murphy is we blame "Murphy" for things going wrong but whose fault is it really. Roaster It is all your fault Do Hard Things because if you don't do them now you will have to do harder things later and this goes for personal health (miking the right small choices every day) and for your business. As the owner, YOU see things that need addressing and you have to make a big choice: Do it yourself or set it up for someone else to do it. The answer is not that simple. That was THE WORK that had to be done so I did it. Because failure is not an option. So back to my roasters and Murphy. It wasnt Murphy's fault. It was mine. But right after they told me they wanted some extra handling. In a week where I felt tired. In a week with extra emails to answer, supplies to stash, communications to write, and steps to take to set up a great 2025. What saves the day: My3Things Doing the Work means identifying which work is most important to do. Example: The location of the ditch for electrical service How to use My3Things, steps to take – Business owner: everything is your fault even when it isn't your fault. Doing the work that was most important first Doing the work to keep healthy Doing the work earlier and later than everyone else Because sometimes doing the work is what needs to be done. S4 Ep 954Yes That $7 Coffee Really Does Matter - Ep 954

Spent $52 per person on "groceries" counting meats we grew here at fair market price, or actual cost. Planted a bunch of swiss chard for late fall $30 total in purchased plants Weekly Shopping Report from Joe Dollar Tree: Stock levels were good, and she commented again about the holes she saw last week at Hobby Lobby. Home Depot: A 2x4x8 was unchanged from last week, at $3.85. Aldi: They again have the Cornish hens (essentially very small chickens). We like those. We found everything we wanted except Nutella. This included the new variety of wet cat food. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.76; whole milk: $2.85(-); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.49 (-); sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.39. A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Operation Independence Im paying off my mortgage right after this show Leveraging your home to build something that gives you ongoing resilience, especially when money costs less than inflation is a tool that people have used for a long time to get ahead. But there is also a trap in there. If you leverage, and leverage, and leverage, and then fail, you can lose the home you are living in. One of the amazing things about the US is that home and property ownership is relatively easy, even now when things have gone up, interest rates have gone up, etc. Bi we can buy our homes, outright. And if we organize them right, they can become a source on livelihood. Still. To this day, in 2004. But I was supposed to talk about the $7 coffee at Starbucks and that it does, on fact, matter very much when you build your financial foundation. Bluntly, if you don;t fix your income problem, that $7 coffee may not change your life – but if you can use it to change your mindset, it can be the catalyst. Why? I mean, every penny pincher article about getting a handle on your spending starts with the coffee. We really should call is scoffee because it seems so ridiculous. But here is the thing: I had already planned to pay off my mortgage ahead of schedule - my plan was September 2025 I rounded up by $3-9 per payment the whole time, along with added a 2 payments when there was extra I ended up paying off my mortgage 12 months (and with less total interest) early But back to the coffee problem. People hear about the Starbucks and are like - but I don't buy one every day. In fact, I rarely buy one. I've already cut that. But I paid a mortgage off and saved at least hundreds if not thousands in interest by adding 1 starbucks coffee per month to my principle balance on my home. But what is your mindset? By default: It is easier to buy a $7 coffee than a $400 coffee maker Carry through to all parts of life.. Vevor Vacuum Sealer VS Vacmaster Vevor Raised Beds vs Wood Ones, Vs self made Manageable prefabbed kitchen cabinets vs waiting And that mindset is in fact about the $7 coffee. The $7 coffee is a symbol for making short term choices that don't serve the long term goal. What is your long term goal What do you have in place for that now and what needs to change, be developed, be accomplished to do this? What do you need to do every day to make this happen? Simple terms = success - this is why we hammer the My3things language so very hard - and Marge is pretty good a rewording over on the Telegram group FWIW Complicated = not understanding really well = you wont do it But there is a part 2 here guys. I almost could not pay off my mortgage today despite the fact that I triggered a clause that makes me pay it off. When your principle drops below your monthly payment, you have 30 days to pay it off. But my payoff amount is close to $5,000. My savings has been tapped pretty hard this year for a number of personal reasons. That $1000 emergency fund doesnt magically become $5000. I could have borrowed that from a friend, put it

S4 Ep 951Redo: Maintaining Your Well Through Winter – EP 951

S4 Ep 951Maintaining Your Well Through Winter - EP 951
Today, we discuss all the things I learned the hard way through my first two winters with a well system in Tennessee. We will also cover our usual Monday segments! Featured Event: Back to the Land Festival the weekend of Oct 18-20: https://www.backtothelandfestival.com/ Use Coupon Code SRF to get 15% off Sponsor 1: KangenWaterCollective.com Sponsor 2: AgoristTaxAdvice.com Listener Feedback from Brian I wanted to let you know your episode resonated with me since I never know what to say on this subject of death either. Whenever we pass around a condolences card at work most people will write "Sorry for your loss." I prefer "Let the good memories get you through this tough time." I remember feeling exhausted after my mom's time on hospice. I hope you are getting some time to relax and reflect especially with the traveling you were having to do to support your family. On the subject of heart, I used one of my pig hearts in chili last year. I called it "Heartburn" the meat never got soft it was firm even after simmering overnight. Most of the kidneys I eat are from smaller animals which turn out awesome when cooked in a roasting pan. Pig kidneys deep fried while you are rendering lard is pretty good. Cubed up and lightly floured is good too. Take care and keep up the great shows. Livestream Schedule Tuesday Live at 9:30AM Central Friday 9:30AM Homestead Happenings with the Tactical Redneck Tales from the Prepper Pantry Holy cow Fridge management on carnivore Frozen tomatoes that need canning Weekly Shopping Report We skipped Home Depot this week, but the online price of a 2x4x8 has gone up 20c to $3.85. Aldi had neither the old nor the new varieties of wet cat food. We'll just dip into our stock a little this week. We found everything else we wanted. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.76 (-); whole milk: $2.92; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.59; sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.39 (+). A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip A thank you to Margo Operation Independence THE POUR is Thursday Main topic of the Show: Maintaining Your Well Through Winter Someone asked how important a whole house generator is now that they live in the country on a well and power goes out. Define your goal - is it having water or having running water because storage is practically free Simple and cheap options Bottles - 2 gall per person per day for at least a week, include livestock The bathtub and toilet Is there a pool, creek or pond outside and can you carry baskets Repurposed rain water collection Generator thoughts Why power the whole house when you can just power the pump for much less money and effort? Land level stored water plus a 12v pump back feeding your system can run off a battery and get you through on conservation mode Have you done a power audit of your home to get a long term plan? Winter Well Maintenance Considerations Dripping water and keeping pipes flowing versus draining the whole house. Yes. I said draining the whole house. Related drain valves. What keeps pipes and other essential things from freezing at your well head and what do you do if power goes out to keep things from freezing, then breaking What about sediment? Documentation of the components, learning what they do for troubleshooting problems, learn what a check valve i and does and what happens when they break what they do Water testing and treatment Integrating an automatic shut off to avoid burning up the pump Some thoughts on naturally occurring fluoride The local plumbing supply shop is a hidden gem All in all what you do in year one depends on budget and priorities - but I find the problem isn't usually that power went out and I have no water. It is more that something happens in the system and when I did not understand the system, it could take days to remedy even with the help of a professional because a plumber/ electrician mix cant always drop everything and come to a place way out in the country. And all plumbers are not created equal. So time to man up and learn about well systems this year while you also cover things you know can go wrong. Welcome to country living! Make it a great week! S4 Ep 948Five Tactics To Beat Inflation - EP 948
Join me for a show on tactics for beating inflation that anyone can work on. This goes beyond "stop buying froo froo coffee" and delves into five places to focus your attention as we navigate quickening technological advances, a transitioning economy, and, well, friggin high prices at the grocery store that are outpacing income increases. Featured Event: Oct 3 Fight Hacker, Escapeology with Sonny Puzikas in Camden, TN Sponsor 1: EMPShield.com, Coupon Code LFTN Sponsor 2: TheWealthSteadingPodcast.com Livestream Schedule Tuesday 9:30am: Tuesday Coffee with CJ Killmer and Shawn Mills Friday 9:30am: Homestead Happenings with the Tactical Redneck Sunday 6pm: Shoot the Breeze with Toolman Tim Cook and Spags Tales from the Prepper Pantry Freezer Audit Complete Livestreams of weird things: beef heart Collecting much more herbal tea items to dry Final round of tomato canning up this week to free up freezer space Canned good reorganization Prepper Pantry Redo Update Weekly Shopping Report Home Depot. The online price of a 2x4x8 there remains $3.65. Along with the new type, Aldi had some of their canned cat food back in stock, so we got two cases. We found everything else we wanted, but noted they were out of watermelon (not on our list this week). Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $3.77 (++); whole milk: $2.92 (+); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.99; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.59; sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $4.39 (+). A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599. Frugality Tip from Margo Hey y'all. After talking to someone recently I realized there are probably some things that are second nature to some, but unfamiliar to others. This week's frugality tip is using media mail with the post office. If you are mailing books, movies, music, or educational material you can send them via media mail. Maximum weight is 70 lbs and it is $4.13 (at time of writing) for any size package. But don't put anything else in the package, they can and will, randomly open media mail packages because some people have tried to skirt the system and mail other things. So send a book to someone and save a few bucks by sending it media mail. Happy savings y'all. Operation Independence That single beef heart yielding 7 meals was pretty slick - especially considering that people all but THROW hearts, livers and tongues at me. Main topic of the Show: Five Tactics To Beat Inflation Long Term View on Necessary Purchases: Quality - repairable freezer without a computer was $200 more than a good-name freezer. Likely to last twice as long. Maintenance on a regular schedule The $5 coffee coffee "problem" and gearing up at home How can you side hustle this? From Scratch Cooking: This CAN cost more but doesn't have to. Do you eat bread? Bake it. Make homemade tortillas. Make them. How often do you grab something for lunch or dinner from a place. Can you premake things and replicate the ease while getting more bang for your buck $15 foot long subway Premade burritos in the freezer Make your own spice mixes Start where you are and make one change at a time. (eating out and making convenience foods on the weekend, meal planning, learn to cook rice or steaks well. If you dont know what to do, do something) SavingsNinja on tiktok -2000/ calories a day on $4 Soapless laundry How can you start a side hustle with this? Prioritize health whatever that means for you. If you are not getting nutrition, exercise, sleep, health maintenance like regular dental attention, mental health – it is harder to tap into new ways to beat inflation. Exercise is free. Making time for exercise is in your control even when you are slammed. Excises do not serve you. Nutrition Reduced Bills, whatever that means for you and your family, when done right will push down the hunger and the bills. Yes. Plenty of people point out that chips are cheaper than vegetables and meats. But in the aggregate ARE THEY? When you cut out the refined sugars, the processed foods and transition to whole foods (yes even if that includes Nicoles nemesis CARBS), the overall grocery bill goes down. At first you may eat more, but your body adjusts. And if you must bake a thing to have a treat, I dont know about you, but it slows me down. Especially since I dont even keep the supplies on hand for something like a cookie. Learn herbal remedies. Dr's and herbalists OH MY. Create access to care for you and your family whether that be insurance, direct care, relationships with herbalists, taking that on at home, etc. Do what you can. Good mental health = resilience. Hard times are hard to get through and if you are mentally weak, it is EVEN harder. Address your mental health. (Nutrition and exercise helps with this) How can you make a side hustle out of this? Produce What You Need: your home can work for you no matter where you live. Growing food, making beer, taking up knitting as a hobby, weld things together for projects, fix things yourself, f
