Tinariwen
On the show this time, it’s the OG desert blues of Mali’s Tinariwen. Tinariwen has been bringing the sound of the northern Sahara to the world for over 20 years. Their music has won the hearts of listeners worldwide, regardless of language spoken. There’s a vibe, a hypnotic groove, and a poetic humanness that pulls you in. There’s also the Blues - the universal music of self-expression in the face of persecution. These musicians have faced hardship and oppression, and it’s not over. A coup in 2020, another in 2021, the withdrawal of the French military and ongoing messy battles between various factions has made civilian life very dangerous. Their songs call for unity, and bravely run counter to the more fundamentalist groups, some of whom would ban music altogether. This record features playing from Daniel Lanois, banjo player Wes Corbett and fiddler Fats Kaplin, highlighting the band’s Americana influences. It’s called 'Amatssou' and was produced remotely by Lanois. It is available through Wedge. Recorded 05/29/2023. She is not afraid to address the suffering of the Kurdish people, or the struggles facing women - so much so that her music has at times been banned, her life has been threatened, and she has migrated as a result. Yo-Yo Ma said “To hear Aynur’s voice is to hear the transformation of all the layers of human joy and suffering into one sound. All Them Witches [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the spell-binding heavy-rock of All Them Witches. All Them Witches is a band whose fans will show up. It appears that once you fall in love with their long form explorations of time and space, you will follow them to the ends of the earth. They play blues, transmuted. They can shift effortlessly from spooky R&B to heavy metal to epic psych-rock. Rhythm holds it all together, but any of the individual musicians can wander off into improvisation - safely cradled in the communal groove. They recently put out 'The Baker’s Dozen' - one song for each month of the year, plus one for safety - released on YouTube. They’ve been playing multi-night-in-one-city sold out shows supporting their latest album - 'Nothing As Ideal.' Then on top of that, why not make it a party dozen? One more than 11! The Sydney duo of Kirsty Tickle on saxophone and Jonathan Boulet on drums and sampler most definitely bring the noise and make the party happen. Their live shows are incendiary, and their commitment to experimentation and improvisation exacerbates the danger. It’s psychedelic country rock - summery, familiar, and comforting. It avoids becoming lost in the morass of bar-band humdrum by simultaneously being truer to its references - and manifesting an indie-original vibe that sounds fresh. With a flexible lineup - drums, bass, guitar, keys, and pedal steel - and hella musicians at each position, the band breezes through each number with such mastery that you find yourself relaxing. On the show this time, it's the code-switching pop-pastiche of Caroline Polachek. Caroline Polachek returned to KEXP to play songs from her newest record ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’ available on her own imprint “Perpetual Novice.” It opens with some gloriously over-the-top vocal acrobatics. A call across the ocean? A wail of anguish? A howl of desire? Maybe more directly an announcement and a warning - “I AM HERE.” Without warning she flips the switch and bang! we are into the deadpan “Welcome to my Island” hook, and a beat that could be described as “Don’t you forget about the Soul-Sonic Force.” From there the music flows seamlessly through genres, styles, decades, vibes - anything goes, and Caroline Polachek’s encyclopedic knowledge of (and love for) music, unifies the experience. Austin TV
On the show this time, it's the unsung legends of post-rock - Mexico City’s Austin TV. Austin TV formed in 2001, influenced by post rock sounds like Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky. Unlike the former they are primarily instrumental with the only words you hear provided by samples. They are heavier than the latter, though equally saturnine. They have not released an album or really been performing live in over 12 years, but now that they are playing again - they rocked the 2023 Vive Latino festival - we are holding out hope for a new record. Their most recent full-length is 'Caballeros del Albedrío' available on Terrícolas Imbéciles Records and Bandcamp. They perform in masks - in accordance with the motto - “No importa tu cara, importas tú.” It’s not your face that’s important - it’s you. Recorded 03/15/2023. Mabe Fratti [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it's the avant songwriting of cellist Mabe Fratti. Mabe Fratti is a composer and cellist, born in Guatemala and now living in Mexico City. She is a rare bird - a cello player who also sings, who actually sings while playing the cello. Her music is harmonically complex, rhythmically intrepid, and doesn’t shy away from dissonance. Against this backdrop she creates out of the ordinary melody - often surprisingly catchy. She creates honestly, and - very closely with her chosen family of musicians. She would say they work “softly” with lots of room for improvisation and the musical personality of each player, of each friend. Her latest 'Se Ve Desde Aqui' is available on Unheard of Hope records. Viagra Boys
On the show this time, it’s the irreverent satire of Sweden's Viagra Boys. Viagra Boys lead with provocation. (Like if the name “Viagra Boys” doesn’t tip you off, we don’t know what to tell you.) They understand that in times when the patriarchal and fascist elements of society rise, it's essential that someone, something, somewhere - rises in opposition. To critique. To mock. They use exaggerated characters that say outrageous things about the ridiculous and absurd things occurring in this time. In this way they comment on masculinity, shootings, drug abuse and ADD, crime, the failures of “evolution”, monkeys of course, and for some reason - Shrimp. Their latest, 'Cave World,' is available on Year 0001. Sofi Tukker
On the show this time, it's the Bossa Nova electro pop of Sofi Tukker. Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova.
