The core of the band is family - the Navejas brothers handle bass, guitar, keys, and vocals. Son Rompe Pera was formed in 2017, by brothers - Kacho and Mongo Gama.  They built up their skill on their father’s marimba, playing the streets, the markets, and weddings.  The “Pera” in the band name is from their mother’s name “Esperanza.” They hail from the suburbs of Mexico City and proudly combine traditional music, cumbia, and rock to create their own powerful style of music. They have performed all over the world, from Vive Latino to Coachella. Their latest album is “Chimborazo” available on AYA Records. On the show this time, it's Ólafur Arnalds, and Janus Rasmussen making music together as Kiasmos. Kiasmos make experimental electronica, born in the cold geography of Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Ólafur Arnalds is a composer and producer, known for his work combining electronic beats and loops with organic string and piano sounds. He’s made 5 solo albums and created music for soundtracks, and he’s collaborated with bands as varied as Heaven Shall Burn, and Bonobo. Janus Rasmussen is in the band Bloodgroup, and creates his own melodic experimental music in Reykjavik. They started together in 2009, releasing their self-titled full-length in 2014. Their latest album together is simply titled “II” and is available on Erased Tapes. On the show this time, it’s the emo-math, jangle-pop of Wuhan band Chinese Football. Chinese Football is a 4 piece indie-rock band formed in 2011.  The name was indeed inspired by Midwest legends American Football, and the 2 bands have even played together.  Their music has elements of emo, math-rock, indie-rock and punk.  Their latest release is “Win or Lose”, the 3rd in a trilogy of albums based on a fictitious video game.  The first was “Here Comes a New Challenger?” followed by “Continue?”.  The albums all have killer anime style covers, by the illustrator Space Layout, inspired by Streetfighter 2. The lyrics sort of follow the trials and tribulations of singer Xu Bo’s dream of becoming a rock star, and the band touring the world.  There’s a humility to the lyrics that borders on self deprecation, what they call “the hesitation which follows failure.” Once the band fires up though, there is no hesitation, they deliver tight jangly, intricate riffs, poppy harmony, and a danceable groove. In the tradition of bands like the Dandy Warhols, Trashcan Sinatras, and Gnarls Barkley they named themselves after a celebrity, here it's (duh) actor Ben Stiller. As Skyler put it in an interview with NYU's student paper the Washington Square News - “How’ve you been? Well, I’ve been stellar thank you.” Since they made the move to New York they’ve managed to build a solid audience in the Brooklyn scene. They’ve also filled out the band with some superb players, recording and touring as a 5 piece. Their 2nd, and latest album is called 'Scream From New York, NY' and is available on Dirty Hit Records. On the show this time, from Bogota, Columbia - the birthplace of Cumbia - it's the energetic joy of Frente Cumbiero.  Frente Cumbiero has been making cumbia music since 2006, bringing their nuanced take on the music of the Latin-American people all over the world.  They’ve worked with dub magician and producer Mad Professor.  They’ve worked with avant-classical string players the Kronos Quartet.  More recently they made a record with Japanese folk revivalists the Minyo Crusaders.  All this to say, these are musicians musicians, who can play with anyone, and who always bring the party with them.  Their music is available on Bandcamp. It’s been 14 years since Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivian formed the band. A playlist of music from filmmaker John Waters that they popped in the deck on a road-trip revealed a shared love of 60s girl groups. Organically, that led to them making music together. They recorded with young producer Shane Stoneback, a relationship that continues to this day, and to this new album. 'To The Ghosts' is available on Imperial Records. Recorded August 13, 2024. It seems unbelievable that the Black Pumas are just now releasing their second studio album. Their first self-titled album came out in 2019, and became an instant classic. It just feels like that record has existed since the 1970’s. The new offering is titled 'Chronicles of a Diamond.' She moved to the states to go to college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She connected with the management company and record label 88rising, who would release her first singles.
