Episode 44: Reading Festival - 8/27/06

E

This week we take a trip on the festival circuit, but since all great festivals can't happen with just one band, we've enlisted another podcast host to help us out for this one. Tom Kwei, the host of the Alphabetallica Podcast joins us to tell the story of his first and only Pearl Jam show. When you think festivals and Pearl Jam's connection to them, you immediately think of the Roskilde tragedy. At this time in 2006, they had just jumped back into playing festivals with this show being the second played since the incident six years prior. With that said, the band was mindful of what was going on in the crowd and announced that they would stop playing if they had to just to make sure everyone was safe, As for the set list, when you think festivals you usually think that it's a collection of greatest hits, and no doubt they played the hits at this show, but it felt like they put a little bit more into the set to give the hardcore fans a chance to see something special. Songs such as Sad, Soon Forget and Crown Of Thorns were all played among Better Man, Jeremy and Alive making for a balanced group of songs. Like what you're hearing and would like to hear more? Episode 43: Pinkpop Festival - 6/8/92

E

This week we tackle one of the pinnacle shows in Pearl Jam's history. The 1992 Pinkpop Festival has been discussed and shared from bootleg VHS tapes to online forums for over 25 years, and this episode breaks down why this show is such an important part of the band's legacy. While the Seattle scene was still blossoming into something big, Pearl Jam hadn't played a show in front of a massive audience before. They were still used to playing club shows with only a couple thousand, maybe even hundred fans attending. Pinkpop estimated to have 60,000 people in the crowd making it the prime stage for the band to bring their a-game. Their energy in a rain soaked day was unmatched. Anyone who has watched this show before knows the moments - Jeff running around like a maniac, Ed climbing the scaffold during Even Flow, and of course an iconic stage dive during Porch that has been a major part of the band's legacy. With a little less than an hour on stage, they created moments that are still talked about to this day. With help from new co-host Chris Buckley and Patreon supporter Bradley Piasecki, we dissect why this show 27 years after the fact still deserves the praise and love it receives.

Episode 42: Soldier Field - 7/11/95

E

SURPRISE! With all of the cryptic clues and messages we've been posting on our social media pages, it's all led to this - the return of Live On 4 Legs Podcast! We thank you for your patience while we've been on hiatus, but we're back and ready to rock! This week we'll introduce one of our new co-hosts John Farrar and dig into a show that has made a major impact on this band over the years, Soldier Field from 1995. There was a lot going on with the band at the time - the fallout from the Ticketmaster lawsuit, the fallout from Eddie's food poisoning incident in San Francisco, No Code's presence looming and trying to follow up what would be the final Grateful Dead performance with Jerry Garcia. The band was handed a major task on a major stage and guess what? They hit a home ru... err, okay NFL Stadium, they scored a touchdown. We'll talk a lot about the raw sound of 1995 and how the band was gelling with Jack Irons at the time. Songs such as Corduroy, Habit and Not For You were major players, but they also pulled out some weirder stuff such as Everyday People by Sly and the Family Stone. That mixed with Let Me Love Open The Door made for an unforgettable moment on this night. So we're back, and expect us here on our new release day every Wednesday for now on instead of Friday. For those who wish to pledge to our Patreon account, please head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to help out the show. More exclusive content coming very soon so keep your head up!

Episode 41: MSG Night 2 - 6/25/08

E

This week's episode is special for many reasons, so where do we start? First of all, Matt is back and last week we teased an announcement from him that we'll deliver to you right off the top of the show. But possibly more special than that? We're on our sixth installment of our MSG series and it's something we've discussed a lot on the pod because it was Randy's Pearl Jam live debut! There's a lot to unpack in this episode with many memories to look back on, but the song with the most sentimental value on this show is far and away Release. It was the opener and obviously the first song Randy ever heard live and he'll take you through all of the emotions of what it was like to have that one moment that you can never relive again. We finally get to discuss a long running inside joke we've shared on the podcast "I wrote the song, and I fucked that up" that McCready exclaimed while out of tune on Marker In The Sand. That and many other moments are brought up that Matt and Randy look back fondly of after 11 years of listening to this bootleg. Also, you'll learn the definition of a Sobelgasm and maybe Ace Frehley will wander his way into conversation. If you'd like to support our Patreon, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to subscribe! More exclusive episodes are coming this summer, so keep your eye on it!

Episode 40: St. Louis, MO - 10/11/00

E

A week after the celebration of the St. Louis Blues first Stanley Cup victory (Brett Hull is still celebrating)we're having our own celebration by looking back on this notable show from the Binaural tour. It happened to be perfect timing because this show was the winner of our listener's choice contest, and Geoff Koller who made the submission got to join the show to talk about it. This show occurred during the time of filming for the Touring Band 2000 DVD and what most people remember from that compilation is a moment that came from this show. Eddie sees a woman named Kimberly Rae Schaefer interpreting sign language on the side of the stage and decides to invite her up to do a song so the entire crowd can see her sign during a performance of Given To Fly. It's one of the more heartwarming moments in the band's history that's remembered fondly to this day. We'll also tap into Matt Cameron channeling his inner Jack Irons as he was still transitioning a bit style-wise at the time. Versions of Hail, Hail and In My Tree sound as they were originally intended to, but his performance on Parting Ways ends up being what steals the show. If you'd like to subscribe to our Patreon account, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs for exclusive episodes. We thank all of our patrons for your donations and we insist that you stay tuned to that page this summer for loads more LO4L content!

Episode 39: Zurich, CH - 6/18/92

E

We're taking the time machine all the way back to the band's most pivotal and successful year in 1992 to focus on a show played in Zurich, Switzerland. Guest host Chris Buckley joins the show to talk about it's importance in the band's legacy as they perform something incredibly rare that hasn't been done in the modern era of the band. This show took place 10 days after the iconic Pinkpop Festival show and as the band continued to grow more popular, the fans wanted to get to know more. This is the first time in public that Eddie makes mention of the Mamasan Trilogy - the demo that was given to him by Jack Irons that acted as his audition for what would eventually become the ever famous Mookie Blaylock. I kid. So everyone who follows the band pretty much understands the story, Alive, Once and Footsteps all go together as a mini rock opera of sorts, but it was during this stretch of shows where they played the three songs consecutively for the first time. They haven't performed the Trilogy since 1993. Outside of talking about the rare stuff, we get to tap into a fiery and angst-filled late-20's aged Eddie Vedder who gave us top-notch performances of some of the band's anthems from that time. Versions of Leash, Porch and Rockin In The Free World go down as some of the best of the time period and we'll get to make some comparisons to what we hear from the band out of these songs today. Quick note: I make mention to stay tuned until the end for a special announcement, I hate to ruin a good thing but that announcement has been held off for the time being. Don't worry, we'll get to it soon! For all of you who wish to subscribe to our Patreon, head on over to http://patreon.com/liveon4legs for more exclusive episodes. Every patron will get the chance to come on an episode and talk about their favorite show of all-time!

Episode 38: Tampa, FL - 4/11/16

E

Our episode this week is from where? Tampa. You got it. And although we lose Matt to the injured list once again this week, we're able to get an excellent fill in at the hands of Patreon donor Eddie Quintana who joined us to discuss his first show. First shows are interesting, what do you want and what do you expect out of them? Well, for one you want the hits. Check mark on that because the band didn't just bust out the hits, nearly all of them were home runs. Secondly, it would be nice to see something that might be a little rare at your first show. In The Moonlight, Getaway, Love Boat Captain – those are all pretty nice gets. Top it off with a few covers like Imagine, Sonic Reducer and Baba O'Riley and you'll be begging for the next tour to come around so you can get your next dose of all that awesomeness. The best thing to come out of this show happens to be an incredible story that happened to a fan named Bill Castrovince. Bill went on the Pearl Jam pages and requested the band to play Hard To Imagine that night. Anyone who knows the band knows that they only take requests when those requests are incredibly meaningful and this was precisely that. We're proud to share Bill's story of perseverance and inspiration on this episode and it's a story that you won't want to miss. Also on this show, we announce the winner of our listener's choice episode contest! Stay tuned until the end of the show to see who the big winner is! For those of you who would like us to cover an episode and want to guarantee that we'll cover it, head on over and subscribe to our Patreon page where you'll get exclusive episodes! Episode 37: MSG Night 1 - 6/24/08

E

In our fifth installment of our year-long MSG series, we find the band returning to the mecca of entertainment for the first time in five years. Without an album to tour for or anything to promote, they had a blank canvas to fill where they could experiment a little bit. One of their experiments was inviting three backup singers on stage to perform three songs that were rare to hear at the time - All Night, Who You Are and W.M.A. It wasn't one of the most enthralling parts of the show, but it is something that the band hasn't dabbled with much in their history so we spend a little time discussing it. Many of our listeners wrote in and spoke of the show as being one of the weaker in their MSG run. We'll let you make that determination after listening to the episode, but we do find points in this show where we point out that the set completely missed the mark. What made it fall flat? The answer consists of such simple Pearl Jam set list math that it's obviousness may make you realize how you can't overlook a working formula. Enter our contest this week! Write to us and share your favorite show and why you might like to hear us cover it on an episode and guess what? We WILL cover it on an episode in June! Write to [email protected] and let us know what you'd like to hear, we'll pick one lucky winner to get a chance to join an episode and talk about their show of choice!

Episode 36: Philadelphia, PA - 10/3/05

E

This week we tackle Philadelphia 2005, but Matt had to take the week off to learn some disco music so we introduce you to our guest co-host this week Pete Griesbach from the Pearl Jam tribute band Last Exit. Pete attended this show back in 2005 and we'll hear a story in this episode about how he avoided the dreaded Philly parking lot porta potties. This show is a tale of three very different sets. There is the first set - a tight and fast paced killer run with the high point featuring the "man trilogy". Then the first encore takes on the role of the campfire set featuring four performances that were incredibly rare for the time period. And then there is encore two... a mish mosh of collective songs played without a distinct flow with far too many stops in-between songs for that late in the set. Although there's a lot going on here, the most memorable moment of the night belongs to the ghost of Crazy Mary who was so disturbed during this performance that one of the amps busted mid-song. It was a crazy moment that led to the band putting together one of the strongest performances of the song in their history. An incredible collaboration from Mike and Boom brought the song back to life after nearly averting disaster. For those of you who wish to subscribe to our Patreon, head on over to Patreon.com/liveon4legs for the chance to join us on an episode to talk about your favorite Pearl Jam performance of all-time!

Episode 35: Hartford, CT - 5/15/2010

E

If I were to wager a bet, I'd take a guess that not every American citizen, or American Pearl Jam fan, would be able to locate Hartford, Connecticut on a map or be able to give one distinction about the city that sets it apart from others. Hartford? Well, if you know your US capitals you may certainly know it. Remember the Hartford Whalers? Breakfasts come and go but The Whale only beats Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime. Outside of that, there's really not much else that distinguishes this random New England city from its counterparts. So why would we cover a Hartford show before we cover cities enriched in music history including the band's hometown of Seattle or London, England? It's this simple – when the band comes to town, it feels like the biggest city in the world. There's a very special reason for that that I can't reveal in writing, you're just gonna have to listen and find out. Sure, I lived in Hartford County for nine years but when the band came to town back in 2010, I thought they'd treat this like any other random city without a professional sports franchise. Maybe no rare songs, no special crowd moments. Basically play the hits and peace out. But boy was I wrong. I was so wrong that the band on multiple occasions talked about how much they loved the XL Center and how much they were feeling the crowd. The crowd on this night was so special that they'd get to hear a song that would be played one time, one time only (until their return 3 years later) just because they had a good feeling about it. Their cover of Van Halen's “Ain't Talkin' Bout Love” on that night is living proof that if a crowd is gonna give the band all they got, the band is going to give you that much more in return. So I guess Hartford doesn't seem so random anymore, does it? For those who'd like to pledge to our Patreon, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to help out the team. In return you'll get a chance to come on an episode and talk about your favorite show!

So It's Come To This: A Live On 4 Legs Clip Show Vol. 1

E

So it's come to this... 34 episodes in the books and finally we have one week where we can't make an episode work out. Matt's fiddling his bass and Randy is just twiddling his thumbs thinking what to do in the meantime when suddenly he came up with an idea that is equally great and awful at the same time! A clip show. Yeah yeah, clip shows are not the most exciting things on the planet, but sometimes they are necessary in order to pass the time. But since we haven't been around for a year yet and we're gaining new listeners all of the time, I thought it would be a good idea to kind of take a look back on some of our favorite moments that we've covered in the show. The episode features these highlights: - Black from Berlin 2010 - Porch from Atlanta 1994 - Who You Are from Moline 2014 - Breath from MSG 1998 - Do The Evolution from MSG 2003 So while a clip show might not be exactly what you want, it's exactly what we have. Though if you end up listening to the entire hour and 15 minutes of this (it's only about 2:30 shorter than State College) you'll get treated with a preview of some episodes that are on the docket for the next couple of months. Thanks for getting through the week without us, we'll be back next week with Hartford 2010.

Episode 34: State College, PA - 5/3/03

E

State College, PA is a show that goes down in history as a fan favorite. Being the final show of the first leg of the 2003 US tour, the band decided to pull out all the stops to make this one of the longest shows in their history. 3 hours and 37 minutes later, the band made good on their promise. This is a set list where strength is less in numbers and more in... well, strengths. It's proof that going by the book and playing common songs in common spots is never a bad recipe for a Pearl Jam show. Within 36 songs lies 4 separate sets with an incredible encore 3 that lasted for about 45 minutes. Funny enough, it's the rare content that has its tough spots in this set. Songs like Mankind and Satan's Bed hadn't been played in some time, but both songs (which were played due to fan requests in encore 2) had a rough go of it that night, even if the band was out there having fun with them. They are memorable moments from this night, but will we give it a pass because of it? Patreon donor and friend of the podcast Patrick Boegel joins us for this show talking about his experience on that night. Episode 33: MSG - Night 2 - 7/9/03

E

Through 32 episodes we've covered emotional moments, historical moments, legendary moments. Band defining moments such as the push for Breath at MSG, Immortality with original lyrics at The Orpheum and when the stage shook during Do The Evolution. Throughout all three of these iconic moments, one of us on this podcast shrugged them off and downplayed their impact. I was worried that Matt would never get to break out and enjoy the emotions of a performance instead of critiquing the sound... That is until this episode! We continue our coverage of the MSG series with the second night of 2003, one of the earliest show's that Matt attended. For years and years and years Matt talked about how Crazy Mary was one of the band's best openers, only for the band having ever done it twice. I shrugged him off and called him... Crazy... due to the song being a staple in the encore act. Low and behold we finally get to talk about it and while it has emotional impact for Matt, I find a way to make good logical sense of the decision. Overall the band had to follow a tough act from the night before where they were greeted with special guests and rocked so hard that the stage shook. They put together a great mix of the old and the rare tracks that were uncommon in 2003 such as Deep and Glorified G and spliced in some Riot Act songs that still to this day remain rarities – including Get Right that hasn't been played since that tour. We've been promising a new Patreon episode and we're gonna make good on it! Sometime this weekend our Live At Easy Street episode will finally be released. Episode 32: Las Vegas - 7/6/06

E

It's not a stretch to say that when you think of Vegas, usually the first thing that comes to mind is gambling. Funny enough, gambling would be a major theme of this night back in 2006. Branden Palomo from the Better Band Podcast joins us as our guest to help us relive this one. The first major gamble of the night came right away opening out the show with emotional cut Inside Job. It was a risk the band hadn't taken with the song up until that point, and although it paid off, we discussed how much it affected the feel of the early set. Another gamble here? Well, you'll have to listen to this unique version of Garden that around the ranks has been labeled "Sound Garden". We describe it as Beethoven meets Phantom of the Opera and it's something that you certainly wouldn't hear in a version nowadays. The biggest gamble of the night however (outside of a jacket that Eddie donned while covering Elvis' Little Sister) was Eddie taking a gamble on his voice which he claimed was stifling him on multiple occasions. You'll be able to tell at times that Ed is having some difficulties, but only if you're listening for it. It was a situation where if he had not complained about it or made fewer mentions than he did, you would never have known he was having an off night. We stressed this fact throughout the entire episode. Hey, Patreon donors! We'll have a new episode this week! It might be a week late, but we promised we'd get you the Easy Street Records show and we're making good on that promise! It'll hopefully be published this weekend. This episode will be exclusive to Patron donors, if you'd like to become a Patron head on over to http://patreon.com/liveon4legs to help out the show. In return, you'll get monthly exclusive episodes as well as a chance to join us on an episode and talk about your favorite live show! Can't find a better deal!

Episode 31: Orpehum Theater - 4/12/94

E

This episode celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Orpheum Theater show – a classic show that many hold in high regard still to this day. It's a unique and rare set, especially for the time period, that was created by none other than the band's crew. Uncommon and lesser known songs such as Hard To Imagine and Dirty Frank were busted out while getting some pre-Vitalogy tracks in there such as Tremor Christ, Better Man and Not For You as well. A moment that sticks out from this show which turns into a bit of a debate is the appearance of Vitalogy staple Immortality. It was only the second time performed live and it was in the days following Kurt Cobain's death. We've always heard that Immortality wasn't written intentionally about Kurt, but considering the time period and how the music world was grieving his death, the song's words hold even more weight. Words you say? Of course, this was the version of Immortality that was in the early stages in its lyrical composition that doesn't have the same chilling lyrics as we've grown to know from the album. With all that being said, debate still came up on whether this was an important moment in the band's history and whether or not it should be considered a legendary performance. There are two different schools of thought discussed, so getcha popcorn ready. Outside of all that, there's also an incredible version of I've Got A Feeling played at this show that lasted for about 15 minutes or so. We won't play all of it for you, but we'll give you enough to leave you happy! So even though we promised a Patreon episode for you this week featuring the Easy Street Records show, we're unfortunately not going to be able to get it to you in the timely manner we promised. We're hoping that middle of next week we'll have it ready, so hold tight Patrons! Episode 30: Charlotte, NC - 10/30/13

E

I have five words to sell you on this episode: Stone Gossard shows his breasts. Yes, this is something that happened. Unfortunately, no one caught this clearly on video so you will have to take John Farrar's word on it. He attended the show and joined us as a guest. So... why did Stone reveal his nipples to a Charlotte crowd? After Ed speaks proudly of the band's touring album Lightning Bolt spending 2 straight weeks as the highest selling record, he claims they didn't have to show their tits in order to do it. With possibly a little egging on from our guest who happened to be on the rail that night, Stone obliges and makes sure that the band would have the top selling album for 3 straight weeks. Outside of some major Gossard boobage, this was a solid show that seems to get overlooked by other Lightning Bolt tour shows that surrounded it. The band debuted opening track Getaway on this night which brings up good debate on why the song was a bit of a disappointment as a live track. This show also closes out with an uncommon appearance of All Along The Watchtower. We're getting closer to record store day, so that means our Easy Street Records episode will be hitting Patreon next week! Head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to become one of our patrons and get access to exclusive monthly content. Along with content that you can't get on any other streaming services, you'll receive a free bootleg from any show we've covered and a chance to join us for an episode to talk about your favorite show you've attended! Episode 29: Live At The Garden - 7/8/03

E

A legendary performance in a legendary venue that turned into a legendary concert DVD. We continue our year long MSG series focusing on the band's 3rd time playing the famous arena and it's one of their most iconic shows of all-time. Randy and Matt have a lot to discuss in this episode, including how this show was one of the first live exposure that Randy had to the band. From the moment the DVD showcased the black and white photos of NYC landmarks and dissolved into the piping organ of Love Boat Captain, there's a certain aura you can feel. It paved the way for a night chock full of amazing moments. Of those moments, none may be more memorable than the appearance of long time Pearl Jam friend Ben Harper. His rendition of Indifference and the tag of With My Own Two Hands on Daughter go down as two of the best collaborations that have ever happened on a Pearl Jam stage. We talk about how Harper captured two major emotional moments from this show and how people still talk about them to this day. Also, lest we forget that this was the night they SHOOK the stage at the Garden during Do The Evolution! Legend be told at the time, they shared this distinction with only the Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden and Bruce Springsteen. Was this the moment that turned Pearl Jam from great band into legendary band? Episode 28: West Palm Beach, FL - Night 1 - 8/9/00

E

We head back to the 2000 Binaural tour for this episode to cover the first of two nights of a stay at West Palm Beach. To help us cover this show is Florida native and fellow Pearl Jam podcaster Jessi Zilka who hosts over at The Porch Podcast. This is the first time we cover Oceans on a non-Patreon episode, so you guys finally get to hear why Matt has such a distaste for the song. It's been and will always be a hot button topic on this show and we're sure that we'll get our fair share of hate mail for it. Two out of three people on this episode enjoy the opener, so that should hold people off for now. Outside of Oceans, this show is a lot more straightforward and positive than other shows we've touched on lately and that's mainly because it's just an all out great rock n roll spectacle. Mostly everything is played well, not a lot of argument for set placement or variety. Nothing As It Seems was one of the standouts on this show where you could really feel the energy translate from the stage to the crowd. For all of you who want more exclusive episodes, head on over to our Patreon account at patreon.com/liveon4legs to donate and receive access to both New Year's Eve 92 and VH1 Storytellers episodes, with more new exclusive episodes to follow. Episode 27: Belfast, N. Ireland - 6/23/10

E

Top o' the mornin' to ya! On the eve's eve of St. Patrick's Day, we give to you our first episode covering a show on the Emerald Isle. However, this is Northern Ireland, and apparently that's completely different from Ireland? We're yanks, we don't know better. Anyway, if you can believe it, nine years ago was the last time they made a stop in Ireland at this very show in Belfast and to date this has been their only performance in Northern Ireland. It's kind of surprising, as you'll hear us talk all throughout the episode the crowd was on fire all night. Why wouldn't they go back when they've frequented Europe multiple times since Backspacer? This episode has some fun moments including where we get to cover a Pearl Jam wedding. Yes, an actual wedding took place at this show. I repeat - PEARL JAM WAS SOMEONE'S WEDDING BAND. Just let that sink in. Eddie plays a first dance for the happy couple (who we hope are together today), a lovely rendition of Amongst The Waves. We also get a few uncommon performances at this show such as No Way and Tremor Christ. For more exclusive content, head on over to our Patreon account to donate to the show! Episode 26: Milwaukee, WI - Night 2 - 7/9/95

E

It's taken 26 episodes, but worlds have finally collided! We welcome to the show Brad Blazek of the OG Pearl Jam Podcast Single Podcast Theory to talk about his first show he attended. Opening with Act Of Love and finishing with Porch - what a great way to make a Pearl Jam live debut! This episode is loaded with topics that only Pearl Jam podcasters could possibly turn into tangents. This show is known most for a rare version of Jeremy played sparingly throughout the years that has been dubbed No Jeremy. A strange take on the original hit song that was turned into a jammy, psychedelic performance where the lyrics were broken up into smaller parts. Another memorable moment from this night was when Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined the band to play a song that never originally had a percussion track. Other topics of conversation in this show include a quick review of Eddie's performance at Innings Fest as well as a Mumford and Sons show that Randy attended over the weekend. And you can't have an episode from 1995 without a good conversation about Starter Jackets! We have a new Patreon episode available now for all of our donors featuring the band's performance from VH1 Storytellers. Episode 25: Holmdel, NJ - 7/14/03

E

As the band waved goodbye to a historic 2003 US tour, they went out with a unique bang taking two songs from every album and playing them in chronological order. While it was a creative way to break into the first set, a major part of this episode debates whether or not they made the right song choices from each album. With some dead spots within the set, could the band found a better way to develop this arrangement or did they put themselves into an awkward position? Along with a memorable first set, they were joined in the encore by opening act Sleater-Kinney for an array of covers, including a rare version of Hunger Strike. We've been critical of the SK appearances before, but did they redeem themselves this time around? For all of you Patreon donors, don't forget that this week our VH1 Storytellers episode will be available for exclusive downloads! Episode 24: Greensboro, NC - 8/6/00

E

The Binaural tour featured a bunch of sneaky, sleeper shows that may get lost in the landscape 19 years after the fact. The Greensboro show may end up being one of those sleeper shows the no one really talks about anymore, but is a solid 2 hour affair front to back. Brother Stephen Maytan returns for the first time since episode 9 to talk to us about his experience at this show, the second he'd ever attended. Lots of great conversations in this episode. Here are a few of the many topics we discuss: - The lack of mainstream hype around Binaural - Shady Ticketmaster outlets - Delicious North Carolina cardboard pizza - What song defines the Binaural era? - Having to listen to a CD in your car in 2019 - What's on VH1 nowadays? - Do you envision the color black when listening to the song "Black"? These topics - plus more about the actual show that included Smile as a closer - all wrapped in one episode. Sign up to our Patreon account to receive exclusive LO4L content! Next week we release a new episode featuring the band's appearance on VH1 Storytellers. Along with exclusive content, you'll also get from us a free shirt, a bootleg from any show we've covered and a chance to come on an episode and talk about your favorite Pearl Jam show. Episode 23: MSG - Night 2 - 9/11/98

E

In this episode we attempt to tackle what has long been seen as a top 10 show in the history of the band. Although they made their Garden debut the night prior to lackluster results, the band was ready to bounce back in a huge way and prove that they deserved to be on the same stage as the greatest legends in the history of music. Notable about this night was the fans continued campaign for the song Breath to be played for the first time in 4 years and finally the wish was granted. It is the moment that many recall as being the ultimate highlight of this night. Though this was only "the cherry on top of the sundae," the show is jam packed with hits and passionate performances of other fan favorites that put this show on the upper echelon of shows in their history. We do our best to recreate the magic, but the task is a challenging one. Also! Eddie climbs his microphone wire and finds a way not to die! Episode 22: Milan, IT - 6/20/14

E

Ciao! This week's special Patreon episode takes us back a few years ago to a 2014 show in Italy. Live On 4 Legs Patron donor Aurelien Moureaux joins the show to talk about his experience in the pit as well as some insight on the differences between following the band on tour in Europe than the US. Big talking points in this episode include early utilization of the songs "Sirens" and "Black" in the set list and how weird they may seem on paper, but the results will surprise you. Also - Eddie makes his best attempt at being a Disney princess that will leave you Frozen. This is an episode you won't want to let go! Episode 21: Barcelona, ESP - 11/21/96

E

In this week's episode we dig into a show from the No Code tour in 1996 that was a popular bootleg back in the day, but not necessarily for the reason you'd guess. This Barcelona show featured a sound check that made the rounds throughout the Pearl Jam community because of three featured songs - Parting Ways, Hard To Imagine and I'm Open. While Parting Ways was 4 years from even being included on an album, the other two songs were ones rarely in Pearl Jam's live repertoire at the time. While the sound check is certainly an interesting facet, we'll talk about how in hindsight it might not be as good as was praised at the time. As for the show itself, it's obviously very No Code heavy which we've talked about before. But there are interesting set decisions here that we wouldn't usually see nowadays such as a mid-set version of Off He Goes and a late set version of Sometimes. Can't forget to mention our Wishlist set choice for closer, Around The Bend, that was used in that spot for the third and last time here. You'll tune into this show for the Pearl Jam, but you'll stay for the pizza and Muppet comparisons which are totally logical. We swear! If you like the show and subscribe to us on iTunes, feel free to rate and leave us a comment and let us know what you think. Can't get a much better deal than that!

Episode 20: Ottawa, CA - 9/16/05

E

This episode is the first time we dig into the Canadian tour of 2005 - the first time the band did a full tour leg specifically in the country. Patreon donor Patrick Boegel joins us to discuss his experience being in attendance this night in Ottawa. One of the things that Patrick talks about often is that the band was really in a good place during this time period. Riot Act was two years past and while they were beginning to focus on a new album that ended up being Avocado, they didn't let that get in the way of what many say is one of their top tours in the history. What made this show special right off the bat was the first introduction of Don't Gimme No Lip into the live catalog. The band was also joined on stage by the opening act Sleater-Kinney during their second encore to perform Harvest Moon, Leaving Here and Rockin' In The Free World. Along with those two major talking points, we'll get into how the band structured the beginning of their set as well as how they were able to make four straight hits at the end of the set work so well. Oh, and there's also the roads in Canada that Eddie brought up... Or is there only one road in Canada? Episode 19: Camden, NJ - Night 1 - 7/5/03

E

The 2003 Riot Act tour has been seen by many as one of the pivotal tours in Pearl Jam's entire legacy. Historic shows such as State College, The Mansfield Experiment and the show that spurned the Live At The Garden DVD all took place in a very busy year for them. Camden Night 1 fell right in between Mansfield and MSG during an amazing run for the band. On a hot summer night a day after the 4th of July, what better than seeing your favorite band with a fireworks display going off in the background? When the band notices and rearranges the set accordingly, you know you're in for something special. As a disclaimer, this episode does get a little heavy into politics discussing how the band was handling their critics at a time where the country was at odds over a war. We do get a little bit into how our current situation in this country compares to what was happening then, but we do our best to try and understand both sides of the spectrum. Tied in with that we talk a lot about Eddie and Johnny Ramone's friendship and how even through their differences they were able to find common ground. Episode 18: Grand Rapids, MI - 5/19/06

E

We take a trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan for this episode, but if you were to listen to this bootleg, you'd be surprised it wasn't in a major city. After a two night trip in Chicago supporting their self titled, or Avocado album, the band noticed that newer tracks weren't being well received by the Ten Club members that would continuously get the best seats due to their ranking in the lottery. Because they weren't feeding off their energy, if you believe the rumors the band decided to shake things up and give some new faces a chance to get to the front. With new faces comes new energy. This show was driven by the energetic enthusiasm the crowd put in with every song, new and old, and the band fed off that momentum the entire night. Additionally, they decided to do a little experiment with the encore playing 6 slower songs in a row, similar as to how they tend to begin encore sets in this current era. One of the new faces that got a chance to see the band up close is one of our Patreon donors, Bradley Piasecki, who joins us this episode to talk about his experience at this show. We'll talk with him about how the band's placement of certain new songs in the set could've turned off the touring, front row followers as well as what the "experimental" encore has meant for the band moving forward. Episode 17: MSG - Night 1 - 9/10/98

E

Welcome to 2019! This year we promised to cover every MSG show in chronological order and that's the way we're gonna kick it off! We start with the band's first performance in the Garden back during the Yield tour in 98. Eddie said it best - "you ain't shit until you've played Madison Square Garden" and that quote alone proved to be the litmus test on the first night. On a Thursday night where the crowd was luke warm at best and technical difficulties plagued the band throughout, we break down how their first moment in the world's most famous arena might not have lived up to the hype. It was a tough position for the band to be in, but as we all know they would return to the Garden the next night for one of the most BREATHtaking performances in the band's history. Episode 16: Wishlist Set Creation

E

Happy holidays everyone! For our final show of 2018 we decided to give you a special treat deviating from the norm. This week instead of covering a Pearl Jam set, we're creating one! Matt and Randy bring some unique ideas to the table taking everything they've learned since the start of this podcast to showcase how the perfect Pearl Jam show may be constructed, demonstrating how truly hard it must be for the band to make these decisions night in and night out. Will they agree and collaborate on the project together or will their opinions clash ending up in a total disaster? Expect a Festivus miracle! Episode 15: Moline, IL - 10/17/14

E

You voted, we listened! By the skin of its teeth Moline 2014 squeaks out the victory! As a major surprise in an intimate setting, Pearl Jam brought something to Moline that hadn't been done before - they played No Code in its entirety. While they had performed two albums front to back years prior to this night, this was the kick off of an unexpected tradition that spurned into more album shows on following tours. This one had a special feel to it though. We'll do our best to recreate a night that can't be replicated, but as you'll hear throughout this episode we're just as blown away by the surprise as the fans in attendance were. Episode 14: Chicago, IL - Vic Theater - 8/2/07

E

One of the most rare and special shows in Pearl Jam's live catalog, the small club in Chicago played host to just over 1,000 fans in attendance prior to a Lollapalooza headlining gig. What followed was something we've never seen from them before or again - a show filled entirely of white whales and uncommons. No Even Flow, no Alive, no Better Man but instead we see them bust out lesser heard songs such as All Or None, Education and Undone. To help us with numbers and stats, we welcome Dave JanTausch from LiveFootsteps.org to get into the nitty gritty details of what made this show something we're likely to never see again. Help us decide next week's episode by voting in our poll open until Sunday! Episode 13: Melbourne, Australia - 3/17/95

E

We're going down under, but leave your didgeridoos at home because this show will leave you rockin' out! Okay, that was lame.. but this episode contains a show that was used for a very early bootleg called Rarefied And Live that was released back in 95. In the middle of the Vitalogy tour, Eddie is full of anger and angst during this 26 song set. Also, who better to make an appearance on drums than a future fighter of foo? That's right, Dave Grohl and the band rock in the free world at this show and its everything you could ever hope for.

Episode 12: Mexico City - 11/24/11

E

Happy Thanksgiving! Featured in the episode is the only Pearl Jam show ever performed on Thanksgiving Day that took place in Mexico City. There's a lot of debate and discussion about set list construction and what worked and also what did not sit well with Matt and Randy from this night. They also take a look at two modern day uncommon tracks in Of The Earth and Ole and the different reactions that fans have to each of those songs. Episode 11: San Jose, CA - 11/4/95

E

For this episode we take a trip back to 1995 to cover a show that was never originally supposed to happen. In June of that year at a show in Golden Gate Park, Eddie caught a bout of food poisoning and left the stage after 7 songs. Luckily for the band, Uncle Neil came to the rescue and played a full set of Mirror Ball and other classic Neil tracks. As the story goes, the crowd was angry that Eddie left the stage and many were so insulted that they "swore off the band for life." But this band has a history of doing right by the fans and in this instance they made up for it by adding a show in San Jose in November. Thanks to Maria Vigil for suggesting this show to us!

Nov 16, 20182h 49m

Episode 10: Atlanta, GA - Night 2 - 4/3/94

E

The time machine this week takes us to our first trip to the 90's where Pearl Jam were smack dab in their prime. This Atlanta show is famous for so many different reasons. First, it was broadcast live for free on radio stations across America where young teens and college kids had multiple tape cassettes handy. Second, parts of this show was featured on the highly popular 3-disc Dissident single at a time where boots were slowly starting to become a normal thing. Last but not least, this is the final show before the official death of Kurt Cobain. Eddie dedicates Go to him and we relive some of the news and rumors that surrounded the story of his demise. Also, lots and lots of love for Vs. here as the band was supporting the album on tour, but with Vitalogy on the horizon we get to hear some special little surprises that gave hints to what the album would eventually offer. Our Patreon donor John Farrar joins the show to discuss listening to it on the radio and swapping out cassettes!

Nov 9, 20182h 43m

Episode 9: Reading, PA - Vote For Change - 10/1/04

E

Hey! Ho! LET'S VOTE! We flashback to 2004 to focus on the first show from the Vote For Change tour that took place in six different swing states prior to the Presidential election. The message on this night was one that can be reiterated in our current political climate - Every. Vote. Matters. While we attempt to stray from our personal beliefs (yet at some points can't hold back), we take the overall message from this time period as a wake up call for today. As for the show, it's an intimate set featuring a total of 10 covers (if you count Last Kiss and Crazy Mary) including some that are no longer in rotation today. On top of that, we discuss the pacing of songs played that night such as Given To Fly and how they've changed up their playing style during current live performances.

Nov 2, 20182h 42m

Episode 8: Philadelphia, PA - Final Spectrum Show - 10/31/09

E

Welcome our first annual Halloween show titled In My Treehouse Horror I! In this episode we cover a doozy of a show focusing on the final performance ever played at The Philadelphia Spectrum. The last of a 4 show series to say goodbye to a legendary arena featured a set full of 41 songs! Including a few that have never been played before and barely been played since. And to celebrate All Hallow's Eve, the band took a time machine back to 1980 to put on red hats and yellow jumpsuits and perform Devo's "Whip It". This is our longest episode to date, so buckle up and enjoy the 3 hour ride!

Oct 26, 20183h 1m

Episode 7: Brooklyn, NY - Night 2 - 10/19/13

E

Is Brooklyn in the house?!? I thought so. Fan and listener Chris Buckley joins us as we cover this instant classic from the Lightning Bolt tour. What made this show so great? A set that kicked off with NINE straight songs before the band stopped to talk, rare songs such as All Those Yesterdays and Blood played along with crowd favorites like Wash and Footsteps, and Eddie telling an awesome story about broken vases in China. This is a can't miss episode with tons of inside jokes, including picking out when Eddie mumbles his way through Leaving Here. Listen through until the end, you won't regret it!

Oct 19, 20182h 6m

Episode 6: Memphis, TN - 10/14/14

E

We're going to Graceland! We take our first bite into covering the Lightning Bolt tour with this Memphis show from the 2014 Midwestern leg. This episode focuses on Randy's experience traveling down south and witnessing the band from the rail all while Eddie was battling a dreaded cold. As we'll mention throughout the episode, it was raining throughout the entire day and the set list choices reflected it. Lot's of fun going on in this episode, so come for Pearl Jam and stay for the amazing Elvis impersonations!

Oct 12, 20182h 5m

Episode 5: Berlin, DE - 6/30/10

E

We're on a road movie to Berlin! In this episode, we add our 5th and 6th legs to the podcast - Stephen Maytan! He talks about his experience traveling from New York to Germany and what it was like to be in the crowd on a very emotional night. This night in Germany was the 10th anniversary since Roskilde Festival tragedy. They poured all of their emotions into renditions of Black and Come Back as the crowd responded with a heartfelt appreciation for the band. We talk about how a beautiful summer night in Germany banded a crowd of strangers together bonded as family.

Episode 4: Amsterdam - Night 2 - 6/27/12

E

This week we dig into show that was made especially for Pearl Jam fans. Amsterdam's Night 2 at the Ziggo Dome in 2012 features a setlist created by lifelong fan Brian Farias. Warning: this set is not for the weak at heart! The main set is one of the fastest, hard rockin' sets you've ever heard and even features a new take on rarely played live song Bugs. This episode is guaranteed to rock your face off. So if you're ready for a loaded set without the likes of Even Flow, Porch or Do The Evolution, you're gonna be in for a treat.

Episode 3: Chicago United Center - Night 2 - 08/24/2009

E

Randy and Matt take their first trip nine years into the past to breakdown Night 2 at the United Center in Chicago. They discuss venturing out to the midwest for the first time at the age of 23 for Pearl Jam and a night game at Wrigley Field. Episode 2: Fenway Park - Night 2 - 09/04/18

E

We head back to Fenway to finish up the last of the 2018 away shows. Randy and Matt discuss how their entire day was planned from 6:30 am until showtime - this featured merch line waiting, word of mouth promotion and especially meeting all of the awesome LO4L fans for the first time. This experience made the day extra special for both of them! Oh right! There was a show that night too! What an incredible way to end the 2018 stadium shows as the band lit the stage on fire from the very start. From fan favorites like Red Mosquito, to an interesting take on Immortality, and a DIRTY little teaser near the end - we cover it all in this jam packed episode!

Sep 14, 20181h 38m

E

Our first episode covers the first of two nights of Pearl Jam's away shows at Fenway park. Since this is LO4L's first go around, Randy and Matt introduce themselves and tell stories about how they got into the band as well as inspiration for starting the show. The first night at Fenway had its ups and downs and we break it all down from Eddie's drunk ramblings to highlights of the night such as "Tremor Christ" and "Out Of My Mind".
