Wrigley Field Month feat. Steven Hyden

E

Welcome to a month's long celebration of the band's five performances at Wrigley Field! Before we cover each individual show's setlist, we're inviting a special guest in from the either the music industry or the Pearl Jam community to tell their Wrigley stories. This week we have music journalist and host of the Rivals podcast Steven Hyden joining the show. Steven will talk about his experience at 2013 and how it reinvigorated his love for the band after not seeing them live for 15 years. We'll talk about the weather's effect on the day and how shows like this have lifted Pearl Jam into the conversation of one of the best American live bands in history. We'll get his thoughts on Gigaton and where he thinks it belongs among the 2020 album releases. Donate to the show, get cool stuff. Episode 85: Verona, IT - 6/20/00

E

Ciao! This week our Around The World series takes us to Verona, Italy where Pearl Jam performs in the historic Roman amphitheater the Verona Arena - a Colosseum that was built way back in 30 AD. We all remember the Immagine en Cornice DVD that documented all of the amazing scenery and culture of Italy, but it was actually back in 2000 where they played this incredible building for the first time. At a time where, unbeknownst to the band, they were about to hit a major career and life changing transition due to the Roskilde tragedy, this is a rare time in the Binaural era where they are feeling pretty upbeat and positive on stage. The Binaural tracks were continuing to hit their stride - Grievance and Insignificance being two that the allowed Ed to tap into something that brought the anger out of him, and Nothing As It Seems being played with Mike's original pedal brings a special kind of sound that makes the song feel like it's lifted into the atmosphere. This show had other great moments such as a 'f it' moment during Habit where a light was blinding Ed and they'd finish the song with a fury. The band was also doing something uncommon for the time in playing a full 31-song set, but the gap between the stage and the crowd left a little bit of the interaction feeling a bit empty. If you'd like to support the show, please head to our Patreon - patreon.com/liveon4legs and for $1 or more you'll unlock access to all of our exclusive episode content. You'll also get a chance to select an episode and compete in an upcoming setlist draft!

Episode 84: Bonnaroo Festival - 6/14/08

E

We're back at the festival circuit this week! From Pinkpop 2000's incredibly speedy sprint of a set, we change the landscape a little by bringing in the jammy atmosphere from the 2008 Bonnaroo show. Joining us to share his experiences is patron and friend of the podcast Mike Packard who was one of 80,000 that waited hours to get to see the band play. The curation of this set list was next to perfect, you had your hit songs that you'd expect from any set, but versions of Better Man, Black and Porch hover round 10 minutes long with the latter including one of Ed's most impassioned speeches about making change. Along with hits and songs that give you energetic festival vibes, they busted a few songs out for the serious collectors. Lost Dog opener All Night makes it's first ever live appearance on this show, as well as a full version of W.M.A. that hadn't been performed in that fashion since 1995. We'll also get to talk about the Kanye West controversy that came out of this show. His elaborate stage construction that took 2 hours to rig added in with his narcissistic demeanor threatening the show promoter to put him on stage at a time where no one else was playing. So Pearl Jam took advantage of the timeslot and played for an hour longer than alotted. Kanye's response? Well, it was the beginning of a massive downward spiral that we hear at LO4L don't give a rats ass about! If you want to be like Mike and join the show to talk about your favorite gig, join us on Patreon at patreon.com/liveon4legs. Your donation will get assess to all of our exclusive content including our Bridge School episodes and setlist drafts.

Episode 83: Pinkpop 2000 - 6/12/00

E

This week we take a look back at one of the most popular and recognizable shows of the Binaural era from the 2000 Pinkpop Festival. It had been 8 years since the memorable 1992 Pinkpop show so the band knew the stakes were high to please 60,000+ fans in attendance. They channeled some of that raw energy from the height of the grunge era mixed in with the mature sound they developed after 6 albums produced and the outcome, as per usual, was pure grit and passion. In the 90-minute set, they bulldoze through 18 songs mixed with a variety of hits, rarities, new tracks as well as a decent sample size from the five prior albums. We'll talk about how Corduroy kick starting the show set the tone for the night introducing a set that had absolutely no lulls or dead spots. The Binaural songs were also played to perfection with the vigor and force that stemmed from the era. We get renditions of Rival and Insignificance that fueled political anger and a Light Years digging into the deepest of emotions. Episode 81: Marseille, FR - 9/9/06

E

Our Around The World series takes us to France this week as we talk about one of the best shows from the 2006 Avocado tour. Joining us to talk about it are some old friends of the show making a long awaited return, our old co-host Matt Helbig is back and right alongside him is his brother Steve Maytan who gets to share his experience being at this show and doing a small portion of the European tour that year. The show starts off hot with a version of Long Road that on paper would seem a part of the slowburn openers but in turn gives this show the much needed engine start up that pushes them through an extraordinary 6-song kick off to this show. Matt Cameron is the key player on this night and his performance shines through on Corduroy and Even Flow especially. Also on this night you get a handful for the serious collectors. Fatal would be busted out live for only the third time ever, Satan's Bed was thrown in the mix as well as Leash which was in the midst of a resurgence in 2006. But the one talking point from this show that everyone walks away with is the incredibly rare appearance of Dirty Frank. Don't worry, we have a LOT to say about Frank and it's popularity with the fans. We try to both make sense of it and celebrate its presence by breaking down why the band never wants to play it even though its one of the most requested songs from the fanbase. Help support the show! Head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to donate and keep us going. We'll have a new Bridge School episode up this week featuring coverage from 1996's night 2 show.

Episode 80: Mansfield, MA N2 - 6/30/08

E

Mansfield, Massachusetts is an important place in the history of Pearl Jam as over the course of three shows there in 2003, the band attempted to play everything in their catalog without a repeat (with one small exception). This episode, however, takes us to five years after the experiment shows on a night that ended a short east coast leg of the 2008 tour. End of tour shows and night 2 shows in general are usually a little bit unpredictable, which is why the setlist had a few seldom heard songs slotted in. Education, Satan's Bed, Bee Girl and an opener of Wash were just a few rare ones they busted out for the Boston adjacent crowd. We'll also get knee deep into versions of Last Exit, Even Flow, Who You Are, Garden and Rockin' In The Free World on this episode. Stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear a sneak preview of an episode of our monthly setlist draft that we feature on Patreon! Thanks to our Patron Jason Corbin for selecting this episode as part of his Patreon membership! If you wish to donate to the show and unlock exclusive episode content, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs. You'll also get an opportunity to select a show for us to cover in the future as well as get a free bootleg of a show we'll talk about on an episode once a month!

Episode 79: Prague, CZ 6/14/00

E

On the heels of the 20th anniversary of the release of the Binaural record, we take our Around The World series to a fun Prague show from the middle of that tour. In the episode we'll get to look back on how Binaural was kind of the oddball of Pearl Jam records and why it doesn't connect as well with the casual fan base. Considering there aren't many songs from this album that get consistently played live nowadays, it was a nice change going back and reliving some of the tracks when they were brand new. Speaking of Binaural songs from this show, there were only 5 played which could be considered a low total for a promotion tour. This show featured the live debut of Sleight Of Hand, a nasty Mike McCready opening the show on fire with Of The Girl, Grievance, Insignificance and Light Years. Aside from that, the set list was quite balanced with all 6 albums getting more than one song played. The reason to listen to this show was Mike McCready and how untouchable he was this night. He shined best on tracks like Animal, Red Mosquito, Even Flow and Black - all which are featured within this episode. We have some cool little announcements in this episode so make sure you stay tuned until the end to find our what we have in store for the next few months. Also, new episode featuring Vienna 1992 is available on Patreon - subscribe at patreon.com/liveon4legs to get exclusive access to this and much more!

Episode 78: Berlin, DEU - 11/3/96

E

This week's episode focuses on one of the most well known shows from the No Code era. The Berlin 1996 performance is remembered fondly because it was one of their shows that was broadcast live on radio stations throughout the world in the same way that Atlanta 94 and Soldier Field were both showcased. This was a completely different era in the band's history though as the trials and tribulations from No Code's reception knocked the band off their perch as the biggest in the world. While their fame dwindled a bit, it allowed the band to present a looser live act with less scrutiny on them and all of the eyeballs paying attention belonging to those in for the long haul. Those who stuck with them were treated to a hell of a show that had one of the best first half main sets of any show in history. Kicking off with Long Road, their stretch from Last Exit, Animal, Hail Hail, Go and Red Mosquito and rounding out with Mankind and a Hunger Strike tease was a statement as to how powerful a live act they still were during a turbulent time period. Other main highlights that we'll feature on this show include excellent versions of Sometimes, Immortality, Blood and a unique encore that wouldn't quite fit in with today's repertoire. Keep staying safe during this difficult time! For anyone who would like to contribute to the show and attain access to exclusive content, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs and subscribe. New content posted weekly, including this week where we'll come up with our fantasy Pearl Jam Rock Band game setlist.

Episode 77: Copenhagen, DEN - 7/10/12

E

We're back to Europe this week as our Around The World series continues with a stop in Copenhagen, Denmark from 2012. It was the end of a 13-show summer European tour in a year where the band wouldn't tour much outside of those dates and a few late summer US festivals. It would also mark the end of the Backspacer era leading way to new music a year later from Lightning Bolt. It is pretty much a guarantee on the last night of a tour that the band is gonna be in a good mood and leave everything they have on the stage. The Monday crowd brought their A-game too as they showed their chops on versions of Elderly Woman, Do The Evolution, Love Boat Captain, Even Flow and Better Man. The band looked to sprint through the first set (that ended at approx 67 minutes) to get the crowd to sweat inside a very hot building. If you enjoyed this episode and are looking for more, check out the many episodes we have in our archive. Episode 76: Cleveland, OH - 8/26/98

E

This episode will take us to the 1998 Yield Tour. It was a time where the band started to familiarize themselves with their brand new drummer Matt Cameron, so setlists weren't as diverse as we'd see in later years, especially for the album that Yield followed up in No Code that only had one song represented on this night. 1998 was really the first year since 1994 that tickets were becoming more accessible to fans due to the band's refusal to play Ticketmaster venues. As mentioned in this show, 98 was really one of the first years that fans began to travel along with the band from location to location. Our Patron Patrick Boegel joins us as a guest on this episode and talks about the stretch of shows he traveled for during this late August time period. This is a great show where the classics were on full display. Incredible and possibly overlooked versions of Alive, Black, Daughter, Wishlist and Immortality were the big moments where the band were truly at the top of their game. If you'd like to support the show, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to donate and subscribe for access to more exclusive episodes featuring live song evolutions and the Bridge School Series.

Episode 75: Oslo, NOR - 6/29/14

E

Happy 75th "official" episode to us as we continue to embark on our Around The World journey in the Scandinavian territory covering the Oslo, Norway show from 2014. While this show has many ups as well as a few downs, its widely known for being the first ever show that the super rare Lost Dog track Strangest Tribe made an appearance at a show. With the Lost Dogs album being out for 10 years prior to this show, there were only a few songs that the band has held out on playing from the double disc. While songs like Undone, Hold On and on one occasion Hitchhiker have been brought to the table, Strangest Tribe was seen as one that would never be touched even though it was incredibly popular with the fanbase. We'll talk about how big of a shock it was to hear that it was played, and having seen the other version of it, Randy will compare it to the Fenway performance. That wasn't the only rarely heard song you got from this show. The band powered through a stretch of uncommon songs in the middle of the main set such as My Father's Son, In Hiding, Sad, Light Years and Garden and then would power through the encore with songs like Satan's Bed, Leash and a rare rendition of Rolling Stones cover Waiting On A Friend. We'll also get you uptodate on news happening in the Pearl Jam universe as we'll discuss the postponement of the 2020 European Tour, the 2017 and 2018 Christmas Singles, and a few highlights from Mike and Stone's Reddit AMA that we were lucky enough to get a question answered from. This week on Patreon we'll have a brand new episode breaking down the live evolution of In My Tree. If you love the song and want to hear us discuss the live history of it, head on over to Patreon.com/liveon4legs to subscribe and check it out! Pledge tiers are at $1 and $5 per month, but all tiers get access to exclusive episodes such as this and many more song evolution, Bridge School and Setlist Draft shows!

Episode 74: Fairfax, VA - 4/8/94

E

On the 26-year anniversary of the day that Kurt Cobain was found dead, this week we look back to the Fairfax 1994 show that Pearl Jam took the stage for just hours after hearing the news. On what was an emotional night, especially for Eddie, the band makes the best of a bad situation and puts together a passionate, spirited performance among the grieving fans. We'll discuss in this episode the band's reaction to his death and how it would impact their decisions moving forward as they would be looked upon to fill the void that Kurt left behind. The generation that mourned his death naturally drifted towards Eddie for answers, ones that he wasn't necessarily ready to provide. We'll also get a visit from a fellow Pearl Jam podcaster. Roche from Jamily Matters will join us to talk a little bit about being at this Fairfax show which was the first one he attended. He'll capture the atmosphere and uncertainty in the building from the crowd during this incredibly challenging day. Also a big thank you goes out to Jed Garfunkel who requested this episode, we'll be telling his story on the show as well. Episode 73: Stockholm, SWE - 6/25/92

E

This week we dig back into Ten era Pearl Jam where the band was touring Europe right at the height of their popularity. Our Around The World series continues covering a Stockholm, Sweden show from 1992. This show is important for a lot of reasons. After this show, an incident where the band was robbed backstage combined with the next day at Roskilde where Ed got into a fight with a security guard led for them to cancel 7 remaining dates on this Euro tour. A few of those festival dates they were set to take the stage alongside Nirvana. As for the Stockholm show, they were in a good mood that day and debuted two cover songs in the pre-set - Driven To Tears and Throw Your Arms Around Me. The set is full of Ten songs and a Fugazi Easter egg hunt, as well as the unique closing sequence of Release and Footsteps. And to start the show, we'll share our takes on Gigaton and what are expectations are for it live. There will be a new episode up on Patreon tonight featuring the Helsinki, Finland show from 1993. To subscribe to our Patreon, head over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to get access to this and our other exclusive episodes. Our tiers are $1 and $5 per month with each tier promising access to everything!

Episode 72: Krakow, POL - 7/3/18

E

What's a better way to enjoy your time social distancing than reliving some of Pearl Jam's best shows in their history? This one we don't have to go back too far as we'll only travel back to 2018 to cover the Krakow, Poland show - another episode in our Around The World series. We picked this show because they'll be heading back to Krakow this summer, barring more postponements, and it's another chance to talk about a smaller city/country that Pearl Jam brings their a-game to. From opening with Of The Girl to busting out uncommon favorites from the Riot Act era, the band was having fun while taking their chances on this very memorable night. But there is no argument that the most important thing that came out of this night was a rare appearance of the Lost Dog track Other Side. Only having appeared two other times at the 2010 Bridge School and Worcester in 2013, this song came as a complete surprise in this set list. Especially in the very early part of the set. This will obviously be one of the only times we get to talk about the song so we do our best to figure out why the band might not bust it out as much as the fans may want them to. Big things happening over on our Patreon this week, we continue our Bridge School series with Night 2 from the 1994 shows. That will be released on Thursday. Head over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to subscribe for this and more exclusive episodes!

Episode 71: Hartford, CT - 6/27/08

E

This episode was originally meant to be a celebration of the 1st leg of the Gigaton US tour, but due to circumstances surrounding the current global pandemic these plans were postponed. In the middle of recording this episode last Monday, we learned the news of the postponement. We went into this excited, discussing our plans and pumped to hear new music in Toronto and finished off dejected, not knowing what the next move would be. Now since we are all attempting to quarantine and stay as far away from COVID19 as possible, keep in mind that Pearl Jam postponing was one of the first dominoes to fall and the news coming before bigger news such as the cancellation of March Madness gave us a major shock. Regardless of that, we do our best to put together an episode featuring a really unique setlist. If you've been a listener of this show since day one, you'll remember how obsessive Matt was with hearing the song Big Wave live. Since this is our first occasion we've had to cover the song, Matt makes his return to the podcast for the first time in 9 months. Randy and Matt get excited that both of their white whales are back to back on this show and have somewhat of a regret for not taking the short drive to Connecticut two days after the MSG shows of 2008. Also joining us on this show is Dave JanTausch from LiveFootsteps.org, a statistical Pearl Jam tour tracker site that focuses on advanced numbers of the band's live catalog. Dave was at this show and will talk about some of his favorite moments, including an accident that almost ruined the show for him entirely. Thanks to our Patron Kevin Murray for requesting this episode. If you have a show you'd like us to cover, contribute to our Patreon at patreon.com/liveon4legs. You'll get exclusive episodes and a chance to join the hosts of the show for fun projects such as set list drafts.

Episode 70: Budapest, HUN 11/17/96

E

Coming off the heels of a major tour announcement where the band will be postponing the first leg of their Gigaton tour, we use the mantra "the show must go on" and use this time to continue to reminisce over the history of Pearl Jam. Since this episode was recorded prior to the announcement, there is no discussion of the news in this episode. If you'd like to hear our take on the situation, please check out our 2020 Tour Postponement episode. For now we go back Around The World to this year's first stop in Europe discussing Budapest, Hungary from 1996. This is their only show in the country to date, but if all goes as planned they'll be making their long awaited return this summer. This was a nice little No Code era show that might get lost in the shuffle. The most notable moment from this show is likely the live debut of Lost Dog Black, Red Yellow. We talk a lot about the No Code era during this tour and whether the band might've thought they were losing steam with their fanbase due to the record's poor reputation at the time. But the band took it with stride and were still able to utilize the new songs in unique ways live. The show has fantastic versions of No Code tracks Who You Are and Habit as well as great performances of Daughter and Immortality. Joining us for this episode is Branden Palomo from the Better Band Podcast. If you want to be a guest on his show, reach out to him via social media on Facebook or Twitter. And if you want to support the show, head to our Patreon at http://patreon.com/liveon4legs if you contribute, you'll get access to all of our exclusive shows include our Evolution and Bridge School series episodes.

Pearl Jam 2020 Tour Postponement

E

The 2020 Tour has been indefinitely postponed. We at Live On 4 Legs are heartbroken that we will not be seeing our favorite band and all of our amazing friends in the coming weeks. This is a difficult time for everyone all over the world and the decision was made to keep everyone safe. Although we are devastated, there is still hope on the horizon. The band bounces back in big ways whenever they are tested by challenges. We implore you not to give up hope, this is just a mere bump in the road.

Episode 69: Chicago, IL - 3/13/94

E

When you think of shows from the modern era that are known for their rare gems and put it up against the set list from this Chicago performance 26 years ago, it would still be considered rare. Today's episode features some of the earliest performances of the best tracks off of Vitalogy such as Last Exit, Not For You and Spin The Black Circle as well as songs that would be considered impossible to hear in 2020. As Ed battled a cold in front of 2,500 fan club members only days after selling out a 13,000 Chicago Stadium, he declared very early on that they were gonna play a bunch of random shit. The Vitalogy songs were still in their early stages so the fans were treated to a preview of the future, but they were also treated to some of the rarest songs in their catalog from that time. Chaser songs such as Hard To Imagine, Alone and fan club song Angel for the most part are songs that people who have been to multiple shows in the last decade or two probably have yet to witness. Can't forget the magic number 4 on this show as many of the songs mentioned above were being played for their fourth time, including Yellow Ledbetter. The biggest moment from this show developed from Ed's shenanigans during Porch as he had a scare after diving off an amplifier. Ed put on a hell of a show making the crowd think he was legitimately injured before finishing off another furious version of the song. Thanks to our Patron Dylan Sumpter for requesting today's episode! Episode 68: Nagoya, JP - 3/6/03

E

This week we travel back around the world to look into one of the shows from the 2003 Japan tour. This being an early show from the Riot Act era, the band was still getting a feel for how the new songs worked on the live stage. Joining us for this episode is patron Eddie Quintana to talk about his passion for the album and the era. Nagoya is a unique show, but one that doesn't get brought up enough in the pantheon of Pearl Jam performances. It took place in a small college theater holding only a few thousand in attendance, and while Eddie had to use a translator to connect with the crowd, the usual songs with sing-along sections such as Better Man and Daughter lacked their usual punch. It's interesting to witness this as we break down how the call and response in the hit songs fell by the wayside in some of these Japanese shows. Another thing that made this show different centers around a lengthy, jammy improv in the middle of the set without Eddie's presence followed up by a completely different take on Immortality. The jammy songs were certainly in the forefront as we'll discuss a tremendous rendition of You Are that fit the mold of this set. Other Riot Act era songs that we don't get to discuss often such as Love Boat Captain, Get Right and the LO4L debut of Bu$hleaguer will get major focus as well. We have a lot of stuff going on this month, including our merch sale for the upcoming tour as well as meetups in St. Louis and Nashville! To help out the show as we try and put this good stuff together for you all, head to patreon.com/liveon4legs and become a part of our team. It only costs $1 a month to get access to all of the episodes, or if you'd like to join our $5 tier you'll be able to join an episode to talk about your favorite show!

Episode 67: Missoula, MT - 8/13/18

E

In 2018, sandwiched between The Home Shows and two nights at historic Wrigley Field, Pearl Jam headed to Big Sky country in Missoula, Montana to benefit Rock2Vote and Sen. Jon Tester's re-election. On this week's Live on 4 Legs, hosts John Farrar and Chris Buckley give the local boy, bassist Jeff Ament, some love as he takes center stage for this concert, featuring Pilate, Lowlight, Bee Girl, and other Ament-centric material, as well as pointed covers of Know Your Rights, Imagine, and Throw Your Hatred Down. With politics at the forefront in this election year, could this be a preview of something we'll see in 2020? Thanks to patron Dan Opallo for picking this week's show to cover, if you'd like to help support the show head over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to join for as little as $1/month to get access to exclusive episodes, bonus content, and more as we gear up for an exciting 2020!

Episode 66: Southeast Asia 1995

E

This is a special episode because for the first time ever, there will be not one... not two... but THREE shows that we'll get to talk about on this week's episode! We continue our trip around the world by taking on Southeast Asia in places such as Manila, Bangkok and Singapore where the band hasn't played in since. The reason why we're lucky enough to cover 3 shows in this one is because the set lists are fairly short and somewhat similar. This was Jack Irons first tour with the band so it makes sense that they'd keep things simple so that he could adjust, but each show has multiple components that make them stand out. Manila is known for a fan getting onto the stage during Even Flow and security having difficulty handling it. Bangkok is known for the third time that I Got Shit was ever played and the only time that Immortality closed a show. In Singapore, Ed smashed a hole through the stage and the band would enter back through it during the last encore. Also a big part of conversation in this episode is the very taboo Vitalogy documentary that has circulated on YouTube for the last few years. They shot footage on this tour for the purposes of releasing it, but were restricted in doing so. This documentary for years was forbidden to talk about on the Pearl Jam forums and extremely difficult to get your hands on. This week on Patreon we're releasing our second episode in the Bridge School series, the 1994 night 1 show featuring Walking The Cow, an early version of Corduroy and one of the very rare appearances of Let Me Sleep. To check it out, join Patreon and subscribe! patreon.com/liveon4legs for $1 a month you get access to all of our exclusive episodes and a chance to have a show of your choice get selected for an episode!

So we've been back n forth covering all different eras in the mid to late 90's lately, but we don't have to travel too far to get to this episode as only a Gigaton of news has happened since then. We cover the second night of the home shows thanks to our Patron Adriane Petersen who made the request for the episode! We emphasize it so often when discussing this one - this was a homecoming show that paid tribute to early-era Pearl Jam with songs that the folks from day one may remember seeing them playing in clubs like RCKCNDY and the Off Ramp. Oceans, Footsteps, Leash, Rats and even the essentials such as Alive, Even Flow and Porch were seen as a throwback to the band's roots. And to prove that this one was legit, this was the only time since the album released that they hadn't played a song off Lightning Bolt. But with all of the fun that the band had on stage with their Seattle buddies helping them along the way, we can't help but discuss what this 35-song marathon means for future shows. Seeing as how the band is going on tour with an opener for the first time in 8 years this year, we wonder if the length of this show and the band's lack of stamina in their older age has something to do with it. Wait for it around the end of the first encore, the band had a rough time making it out of some spots in this show that was otherwise full of energy. If you want to be like Adrienne and have your favorite show covered on an episode, head to patreon.com/liveon4legs and contribute to the show! We have weekly exclusive episodes available including our Bridge School and Evolution series. Every dollar contributes to us getting stuff together for the upcoming tour setting up meet ups and possible merch!

Episode 64: Sydney, AUS Night 3 - 3/12/98

E

This week we continue our Around The World series with a show from the Yield tour down under in Sydney, Australia! Thanks to our Patron Paul Mereniuk for requesting this episode, you'll hear his concert story during the show! 1998 was an interesting time for the band, they were finally out of the limelight of mainstream music and seemed to be genuinely enjoying their time performing. They took the stage this night wearing wigs saying there was a 5 for 1 deal and they got their hair done at the same place Elton John did. It showed the band was able to relax, make fun of themselves and show the crowd they were there to have a good time as well. We also see Ed get into some personal stories, something he wasn't doing often in years prior. But while there was a lot of good going on with the band at the time, this was also a trying time that saw the end of drummer Jack Irons tenure. The Australian tour would be his last as he was having trouble sleeping and prone to constant panic attacks due to his bipolar disorder not being treated properly. This is one of a small handful of shows where we get to hear Jack play Yield songs such as Faithfull and Given To Fly that add his very unique style and presence brought to the album. For today's episode, we are taking donations through our Facebook page to go towards helping the Australian wildfires. If you can pitch in a little bit to help out, we'll send you a couple of free Australian show boots as a thank you! Don't forgot to head on over to Patreon for more content! Subscribe to the show and you'll get exclusive episodes as well as an opportunity to pick your favorite show for us to cover in the podcast!

Episode 63: Greenville, SC (Vs. show) - 4/16/16

E

On the last episode we spoke with WWE Hall of Famer Edge about his massive Pearl Jam fandom and one of the many shows he was honored to attend happened to be in Greenville in 2016, the same show where the band performed Vs. in its entirety. As he made mention in our conversation, his reaction to the fans sitting next to him says it all... "you don't know the SIGNIFICANCE of this!!!" We'll hear from Edge more in this episode, but just as importantly one of our hosts was right on the rail for this show. John reminisces about the entire experience, but mainly the moments that made it feel real. After Daughter was played without a tag, something was up. Daughter as the 4th song in was a little funky as is, but as a follow up to Go and Animal, especially after the Moline and Milwaukee shows, people were hopeful that they were getting an unforgettable performance, which they did. The reasoning behind performing the album was that the show happened to fall on Record Store Day, so when Ed opened the show by declaring "let's play some records" he wasn't joking. Versions of Glorified G and Rearviewmirror tore the house down and Indifference mid-set without the lights on made for a memorable moment. They'd also honor the day by playing their two record related songs - Let The Records Play and Spin The Black Circle - as well as dedicated Comfortably Numb to one of Ed's favorite records growing up. If you want to hear more content from Edge and our thoughts on the new single Dance Of The Clairvoyants, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs and subscribe. $1 a month gives you all of our exclusive content including Evolution and Bridge School episodes, and it also gives you an opportunity to pick your favorite show for us to cover on the pod!

Pearl Jam Fan Profile: WWE Hall Of Famer Edge

E

This episode's guest is an 11-time WWE Champion and a Hall Of Famer, most of you may already know that, but what you might not know is how big of a Pearl Jam fan he is. Adam Copeland, better known as Edge, joins the show to talk about his love for the band and how he's grown up with them throughout the years. You'll get to hear all of his stories about how certain songs and moments have stuck with him throughout his life and some of the shows that have made a huge impact on him. He'll also talk about fellow wrestler Becky Lynch and her love for the band and perhaps he may address some rumors that have been circulating on the dirt sheets. Don't forget to check out Wednesday's episode where we'll have more clips from Edge talking about his experience at Greenville 2016 when we cover that show in full. And for even more on Edge, check out our Patreon page for another full exclusive episode featuring conversations that didn't make this episode.

Episode 62: San Diego, CA Night 1 11/6/95

E

With all of the hype around the new album and tour announcements, we're still gonna stick around in the past and talk about some of the best shows of this band's history to help you get hyped for all of the exciting events in the coming months! This week we'll dip into another Vitalogy era show that was a make up date from the infamous Golden Gate Park show. Joining us for this episode is Patreon subscriber Debra McMurtrey who recounts being a 16-year old at this show. Debra's stories are what makes this episode stand out. You'll get to hear how she initially acquired tickets to this show and her reaction when she found out it was canceled, and then her long journey of the band rescheduling this show as one of the last stops of the tour. She was crushed in the pit, crowd surfed to Animal and had a religious experience during songs like Rearviewmirror. All while her mom attempted to get some work done while chaperoning. We'll also talk about The Ramones who opened for the band at both of the San Diego shows on their way to their final tour of their career. 30 minutes of catchy, hard-hitting punk rock to open the show and make way for Pearl Jam who were at their classic 1995 best. Highlights to look forward to from this show include Immortality, Long Road and Corduroy. If you want to be like Debra and have an opportunity to join the show, head on over to our Patreon and become a subscriber! Episode 61: Auckland, NZ Night 2 - 3/25/95

E

It's time to travel Around The World! This episode is the first installment of our year-long series where we'll tackle Pearl Jam shows from all different countries across the globe. We kick it off in New Zealand where the band was riding high on their red hot Vitalogy South Pacific Tour. This was the final appearance in a 20-show stretch that reached from Japan to The Philippines, down to Australia and finally New Zealand. The band had already been through a ton of difficulty on this tour as the crowds were unruly any place they touched down. They were also filming a documentary at the time that never saw the light of day, but it's something you can now find on YouTube if you dig for it. The biggest takeaway from this show (that doesn't have the finest quality of bootleg) is that Pearl Jam mania is arguably at its peak and the band making an appearance in a country that other bands usually ignore speaks to how high in demand they were at the time. They rocked all of the Vitalogy songs that were released 3 months earlier including ripping versions of Spin The Black Circle and Not For You and got some love at the end of the set performing with NZ band The Split Enz featuring Neil and Tim Finn. Renditions of History Never Repeats and I Got You were major highlights from this performance. This week we'll be releasing an exclusive episode to Patreon where John and Randy will attempt to create a setlist only out of songs from Ten. If you'd like to check out that plus more exclusive episodes (including any song from our Evolution series and Bridge School 1992) head on over to Patreon.com/liveon4legs to contribute. $1 a month gives you access to everything and also gives you a chance to select your favorite show for us to cover on the pod in the future!

Episode 59: Pearl Jam Fantasy Setlist Draft

E

Have you ever tried to create your dream Pearl Jam set list that you'd love to hear some day? Have you ever tried to create it while 3 of your friends are battling with you to come up with the perfect set list? Well we did that in this episode! Randy and John are joined by Patron Patrick Boegel and host of the Better Band Podcast Branden Palomo as they draft their ultimate Pearl Jam set. The rules are as follows - every pick is a choice for that spot in the setlist, so unlike in fantasy sports where you pick the top player #1 overall, here you are selecting your opener as your first pick, so on and so forth. Once a song is taken, its off the board (outside for one free pass pick) For 18 songs in the first set, 7 in Encore 1 and 5 in Encore, we do our best to get in our favorite songs and a set list that flows together and is something we crave to see live. This week on our social media pages you'll be able to vote for your favorite setlist, the winning setlist will get to pick a charity where the fans can donate in order to get an opportunity to win an original vinyl press of No Code! Stay tuned for that! If you'd like to support the show, head on over to http://patreon.com/liveon4legs to contribute and in return you'll receive exclusive episodes such as song Evolutions and a soon to come in 2020 the Bridge School Series. For your contribution you'll also have a chance to select a show for us to cover on an episode!

Episode 58: MSG Night 2 - 5/2/16

E

We've made it to the end of our 10-part MSG series and in this episode, Randy and Chris break down the latest Garden show to date from 2016. As both were in attendance on both nights, it was kind of impossible to judge this show without putting it up head to head with the other and when doing so, some of what you got from this night might be considered disappointing. A huge list of songs from this night were doubled up from night 1 including many in the exact same spots and that led to some points of criticism. With this being the Garden, expectations were fairly high and repeating some of the first night's set left a little bit of a lackluster feel. However, it didn't disrupt it from being a good show with a lot of Ten-era heavy tracks, including the more uncommon Garden and Deep. There were two big highlights from this night everyone remembers and they come from the special guests that joined them on stage. Cheap Trick accompanied them early in the set for Surrender and none other than Sting joined the band to sing Driven To Tears. These were the big time Garden moments that the first night might have been missing. After you check out this episode, head on over to http://patreon.com/liveon4legs to listen to our new Evolution Series episode Wash. It only takes $1 to subscribe to Patreon and with your contribution, in return you get not only all of our exclusive episodes, but also a chance to have your favorite show covered on an episode of the podcast!

Episode 57: Seattle, WA - 12/8/93

E

In preparation for the upcoming Vault #9 release, this week's episode we break down the Seattle show from 1993 that many of you will soon be receiving in your mailbox. While this show was a bit of an unexpected pick to be unveiled from the Vault, it features important moments in the history of Pearl Jam. As the 1993 tour was winding down, the band was looking towards the future with Vitalogy experimenting with two incredibly fresh songs for the time in Last Exit and Tremor Christ. While both songs were making only their second appearance on the live stage, you can get a sense of what the next stages were for the band - a unique rawness that encapsulated the magic of the first two albums, but also held a sense of maturity that was setting the landscape for the mid-90's era for the band. Another major moment, and possibly the reason for the decision to make this a vault, was that this was the fourth and final time that the Mamasan was performed in its entirety live. We listen to all 3 songs and discuss the importance of it's presence, especially Footsteps which is played sans harmonica and in a full electric ensemble. If you'd like to support the show and score some exclusive content for yourself, head on over to our Patreon and search Live On 4 Legs. Episode 56: Madison Square Garden Night 1 - 5/1/16

E

We're coming down to the wire as our 2019 yearly series featuring MSG shows has only two episodes remaining! In this episode we'll discuss Night 1 of 2016, a show that came with a lot of hype and anticipation off the heels of "Tenadelphia" surely you would think the band would bring their best set to the World's Most Famous Arena. With both Randy and Buckley in attendance this night, they have very different perspectives of this show. Randy will talk about the disappointment in being a serious collector and not getting anything new for the first time seeing the band live. The overall discussion in this episode is although this was a very solid set, did it really have that MSG magic that shows in 98, 03 and 2010 all had? The album intro to Go is a great discussion, Release in the middle of the set, a unique rendition of Future Days and a random Doobie Brothers cover will dominate conversation, but this wasn't anywhere near the type of set that Philly or Greenville received earlier that tour. We have a new Patreon episode available featuring the live evolution of Corduroy, all you have to do is head over and subscribe to get access to this and all of our exclusive content. For becoming a patron, you'll also get an opportunity to join the podcast and talk about your favorite Pearl Jam show of all time!

Episode 55: London, UK Night 2 - 7/17/18

E

In the summer of 2018 we witnessed a possible turning point in the band when a second show in London was canceled due to Eddie having a busted throat. This would lead to a rescheduled date that ended the European tour with tons of great moments to make up for the cancellation. LO4L Patreon donor Aurelien was there that night and joins the show to discuss his experience. A lot of what we discuss in this episode is how the situation in London possibly has something to do with how quiet the band has been in 2019. Was Ed losing his voice so much of a concern that they halted album recordings in order for him to save himself for solo shows? We'll also talk about Can't Deny Me and whether after almost 2 years if it should even be placed on a new album let alone in a prominent spot on it. Aside from that, the show had a lot of big moments in the set that you don't usually get. Oceans and Nothing As It Seems as openers, Mankind, Satan's Bed, Fatal and a whopping 4 Riot Act songs that were played! Not stuff you get from a normal performance. It also has a wonderful dedication to friend of the podcast Andrea Oakes whom the band played I Won't Back Down for. If you are a listener of this show, love it and want more content, head on over to our Patreon page for more exclusive episodes including episodes in our Evolution series. Episode 54: Indio, CA 11/5/93

E

We've been stuck in the 2000's for the last couple weeks but its time that we dive back into the era that the band thrived in the most. Indio 1993 is one of those shows that's always in the conversation, maybe not one of the greatest shows of all-time but it lives in infamy for numerous reasons. When you add a wild crowd together with a lead singer who's blood alcohol content exceeded his age, there's no other result but absolute madness. The band already knew what they were walking into when the crowd were throwing shoes on stage during the opening act, so the anger is at full tilt. Ed has so many classic lines at this show that reflect his anger such as “kill your local rapist, but torture him first” and “why the fuck would I want to live forever?” But this show is infamous for two moments that have never been replicated on the live stage. After a version of Porch where Ed challenges the crowd to spit on him, they go into an improvisation that is forever known as Fuck Me In The Brain. Along with all the insanity, the band continued to dodge shoes at this point leading to a very angry Eddie threatening to kick the shit out of anyone who walked out of there barefoot. But as the man is known to do, he turns a negative into a positive and encourages the crowd to throw more things on stage so they can donate to charity, urging people to shoe the shoeless. Shoes for my friends! These are pivotal moments in the band's history that we'll get into along with the rest of the set which is a classic representation of a wild early 90s show. For those who would like to contribute to the show and receive exclusive episodes and content, head on over to Patreon and search Live On 4 Legs. With your donation comes the opportunity to join an episode to talk about your favorite show!

Episode 53: Philadelphia, PA - Night 3 10/30/09

E

Last year at Halloween time we covered the historic Philadelphia show where the band closed down the Spectrum, but after we released that episode we came to find that most fans that attended the 4 show stretch thought that night 3 was the best of the bunch. At a time where the city of Philadelphia is heavily focused on the World Series, the band managed to score a show on an off-night so the crowd didn't have to worry about continuously checking the score of the game. For that, Pearl Jam gave them one hell of a show with a lot of serious collector sightings - including the first appearance of Lost Dog, Hold On. They'd have a bunch of other tricks up their sleeve playing songs like Deep, Habit and Parting Ways that had all been lost from set lists for the past handful of years. But the special appearance of a rare reverse Mamasan is another reason why this show is so great. Want to contribute to the show? Head on over to Patreon and search Live On 4 Legs. We have exclusive episodes available including the entire Evolution series. For contributing, you also get the chance to pick a show for us to cover and join us for an episode to talk about it!

Episode 52: MSG - Night 2 - 5/21/10

E

When you start a conversation with a Pearl Jam fanatic asking them what the best show of all time is, there are a few answers that immediately come to mind. Pinkpop 92, Soldier Field, Randall's Island are all shows that people speak of with the fondest of memories, but today we're covering a show that hangs among the pantheon of the best shows ever. MSG Night 2 2010 was an instant classic with too many incredible moments to count. Randy and Buckley host the show this week and both of them were there that night. The recap and love for this show tells the story. Coming from two different perspectives, this was the first show Buckley attended with very little knowledge of the band prior. He'll talk about how the crowd and the passion from the stage that night turned him into a lifetime fan. Right from the bat with Corduroy, you could tell that something special was in the air. The set list is an array of rarities mixed with strong versions of the big hits. For anyone that's listened to this podcast before and enjoys the song bytes added in, there will be no lack of clips on this episode! From Evolution to Nothingman, Push Me Pull Me and the W.M.A. Tag on Daughter to all of the juicy encore moments such as Lukin II, Black Red Yellow, Sweet Lew, Better Man, Hunger Strike and Kick Out The Jams. Holy bleep, there's a lot of bleepin' good shit on this show! Episode 51: Buffalo, NY - 10/12/13

E

We've been celebrating the Lightning Bolt tour this month on our social media pages and we're gonna hang right in that era for this episode. Buffalo 2013 was the second show on the tour and from the early onset you were able to get a big picture idea of what this tour was going to become. Randy attended this show, so he recaps all of the memories of deciding two nights before to take the 6 hour trek up to Buffalo to see the band. Does this show have any major memorable moments that non-attendees gravitate towards? Probably not, but it was an example of a show for people that were in the building would tell you how energetic the atmosphere was. A good mixture of album tracks spread within the Lightning Bolt songs they were promoting including three from No Code which has become a rarity in recent years. If you are a Vs. fan, chances are you will enjoy this show. Especially the encore where they ripped through five songs from the album within an eleven song span. We'll also talk about the inclusion of the arena slow burn set and how it set the stage for the entirety of the 2013 tour. If you'd like to contribute to the show and receive exclusive content that you can't get from Apple or Spotify, head on over to our Patreon account. Episode 50: Voodoo Fest - 11/1/13

E

Laissez les bons temps rouler! This week we take the show down to the Big Easy to cover the Voodoo Festival from the Lightning Bolt tour. Joining us as our guest for this episode is host of the Antiquiet Podcast Johnny Firecloud who recently released an episode chronicling his Pearl Jam fandom. If you listen to that before you listen to this, we won't be offended in the least! While we've tried to stray away from festival shows as much as possible, this one has a unique and emotional feel to it that you can't replicate at other festivals. Former NFL player Steve Gleason was on hand to create the set list with powerful renditions of songs that defined the tone of the night. It would kick off with a surreal rendition of Sirens and continue with powerful performances of In My Tree, Given To Fly, Inside Job, Present Tense and Rearviewmirror. While the show tugs at your heart strings, it also wouldn't be a show in New Orleans without a party atmosphere. The band invited some very special guests on stage that Eddie got to have some fun with. You're gonna want to bring your teddy bear for this one. Live On 4 Legs Clip Show #2 - Obscure Covers

E

This week we take a look back on some of the memorable moments we've covered in past episodes. The theme for this clip show is obscure covers. Sure, the band has had their fill of cover songs in the past, anything from Rockin In The Free World to The Who and Beatles songs, but mixed in with those they've made a part of their live act are ones that you may never hear again. In this episode, we discuss six songs that the band has only pulled out for very special occasions: "Taillights Fade" - Buffalo Tom (Fenway 2018) "Whip It" - Devo (Philly 2009) "Little Sister" - Elvis Presley (Las Vegas 2006) "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" - Van Halen (Hartford 2010) "Everyday People" - Sly And The Family Stone(Soldier Field 1995) "Let My Love Open The Door" - Pete Townshend (Soldier Field 1995) For those who haven't checked out our full episodes covering these great shows, they can be found in our archives on any of our podcast platforms. We'll be back next week with a full episode.

Episode 49: Seattle, WA - 1/17/92

E

This week we’re going way back to the legendary January 17, 1992 show -- AKA “Vault #1.” In fact, this is the earliest show we’ve covered on the podcast so far! The band trekked across North America in support of Ten throughout the Fall and early Winter of 1991. After a two-week break in the beginning of January 1992, the boys returned to Seattle for a homecoming show at the legendary Moore Theatre. The band sounds incredible from start to finish. Ed’s voice is in perfect shape after 14 days off and the entire band seems to be relaxed and loving the atmosphere of playing in front of an energetic hometown crowd of about 1,350. The footage used in the “Even Flow” music video was professionally filmed at this show, while a number of famous early photos by Lance Mercer were captured here as well. A rough audience recording of the show was all that existed among bootleg collections for nearly 20 years, until the band decided to open up the mysterious “Vault” in 2011. A remastered version of the original recording was circulated at the PJ20 festival, much to the delight of diehard fans and those aware of the magic of this show. Single CDs in cardboard sleeves simply titled “VAULT #1” were distributed at the destination weekend. This show also marked the first time the band covered The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” although the song is omitted from the vault recording. John Farrar and Chris Buckley team up to host their first show together, exploring this early performance that offers a glimpse into the band’s early era and formative years just before they exploded to superstardom. Episode 48: Fenway Park Night 2 - 8/7/16

E

This week's episode takes a look into the Fenway Park Night 2 show from 2016, but if you're looking for set breakdown and song analysis you won't find it in this episode. For this show I'm joined by my wife to be Jillian who I was lucky to attend this show alongside. As Jillian and I are set to wed this weekend, we talk about how this show bonded us closer as a couple. She knew what she was walking into - a baseball park full of diehards who made a weekend event of the show. As it was her first Pearl Jam live experience, she was able to witness first hand this crazy lifestyle that I was living as a massive fan. A lot of what we talk about in this show is her intake at the time and how much she has grown to love and appreciate the band since that night. Most of us who live and die with the band have friends, relatives and significant others who don't quite understand this universe, but when you expose them to the live atmosphere their perception changes. One thing that we bring up is how this show helped her understand why and how this band and this community have made such an impact on my life, and knowing this grew us even closer together. Also, we usually have rabid fans on this show, so this episode brings in a unique experience from someone who was once on the outside and is still learning new things to love about this band every day. Episode 47: MSG Night 1 - 5/20/10

E

On the 21st anniversary of one of the band's most legendary shows at Madison Square Garden, we are back to our year long MSG series taking a look at every show the band performed at the World's Most Famous Arena. Today's episode we cover Night 1 of 2010 - a show that gets overshadowed by the magic of the following night, but in its own right has its memorable moments. Randy was in attendance on this night, and although it was over nine years ago and the memories have faded a bit, there are big moments that still stick out to him as some of his favorite live moments to this day. Most of the moments were courtesy of the red hot crowd that poured their heart and soul into this show. Renditions of Elderly Woman, Once, Crazy Mary and Indifference as the closer have incredible crowd participation, so much so that you can hear the crowd better on the boot than you can Ed. But with all of this show's ups there were also some downs from this night. While the crowd and overall performance of the band was a huge strength, the meaty part of the first set left a little to be desired. They got off to a hot start, but after Even Flow the set lacked a powerful punch and defining moment. As John mentions in the episode, it felt like they randomly chose tracks from different albums and blindly placed them in the set. Lots of topics to cover here for all you set list nerds! Episode 46: The Gorge - 9/1/05

E

Happy birthday to us! We're celebrating our anniversary episode by covering the show that won the listener's poll - The Gorge from 2005! For those who entered the poster contest, don't forget to wait listen to the end of the episode to see if you won! The Gorge Amphitheater is a beautiful venue in the state of Washington, scenic and smack dab in the middle of nature. The band took advantage of their surroundings, especially in the early part of the set playing a 9-song sit down to start the show. It's chock full of great highlights including Low Light being played as the sun went down and the first appearance of Hard To Imagine in 7 years. But the theme of the night was centered around a rock n roll legend who would take the stage at The Gorge the following nights. Ed kept begging and pleading with Tom Petty to come down from his hotel room and join the band on stage, including starting numerous chants as well as jabs at the Heartbreaker. Finally after the realization that he wasn't gonna come, Ed calls an audible in the set list and plays I Won't Back Down for Tom. Episode 45: Glasgow, UK - 6/3/00

E

We've been teasing it all week and now it's finally time for the big news! We're extremely excited that we've uncovered one of the very many mysteries of Pearl Jam's lore and can't wait to share the news with all of you! Right off the top of the show Randy and John will address the news, but stay tuned to our social media all day today to view some awesome photos that we have a hold of. Oh right! We have an episode to talk about as well! And it's a good one folks. We're happy to have on Colin Rodger and Martin Higgins, who have put together this year's PJ Con - a show featuring tribute band Lost Dogs in Glasgow, Scotland where all of the benefits go toward supporting Diabetes UK. Head to http://eventbrite.co.uk to purchase tickets and head to http://justgiving.com/fundraising/pjcon2019 to donate to their amazing cause. So Pearl Jam has only been to Scotland twice, the last time being 19 years ago. Colin and Marty spend this episode reliving their only hometown show and the memories of being in the crowd, feeling the energy of the show and coming back with a little mud on their faces. High points include Sometimes, Present Tense and Given To Fly , but there's also a glaring omission in this show that Randy takes issue with. Want to help support the show? Head on over to http://patreon.com/liveon4legs and donate as low as one dollar to receive bonus exclusive content, new episodes and get a chance to come on the show and talk about your favorite Pearl Jam show!
