This time around we welcome Scott Gosnell into the house. Scott and I will be discussing the life and death of Giordano Bruno. Of course, Bruno is one of the reasons you are hearing my voice in the first place, so it's really cool for me to be able to chat about his life with Scott, who may be the pre-eminent Bruno scholar here in the States. Scott has translated four volumes of Bruno's writings from Latin and Italian into English, and it's the first time these works have been translated. How cool is that? How he came to do that is also a cool story that we'll talk a bit about as well. This is also a bit of an experimental episode, at least in terms of the format and preparation that went into this behind the scenes for me personally. It may not be that noticeable as a listener, but see if you can pick up what I'm puttin' down. And what I'm puttin' down is a story that's not so much about Bruno's ideas as it is about him and the road he traveled to even arrive at those ideas, and some of the characters he may have encountered along the way. Peter Sjöstedt-H is an Anglo-Scandinavian philosopher of mind and a metaphysician who specializes in the thought of such philosophers as Alfred North Whitehead, Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer, with special regard to panpsychism and altered states of sentience. Peter received a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and a Master's degree in Continental Philosophy from the University of Warwick. He subsequently became a Philosophy Lecturer in London for six years but is now working on his PhD at Exeter University where he also teaches philosophy modules and writing skills. Peter is also the author of Noumenautics, a collection of essays which traverses the mindscape of metaphysics, nihilism and psychedelic phenomenology and will form the basis for our conversation here. Katy Bohinc is the author of Trinity Star Trinity, a long poem dedicated to the divine feminine recently released by the fine folks over at Scarlet Imprint. Katy is a poet and a data scientist; an avant garde publisher and a professional marketer; an activist, an astrologer and an innovator. She studied pure math and comparative literature, and in her words, she doesn't think these things are contradictory; she thinks it's the future. As for Trinity Star Trinity, this was written after experiences Katy had in the home of Greek lyrical poet Sappho and at the birthplace of the Greek Olympian Hera. The long poem takes shape as an ode or chant and is comprised of 27 poems of 27 words each, and speaks to Katy's interest in astrology, triangles, and mathematics. Katy did join me via cell phone and the audio was a bit problematic at times, but the message comes through loud and clear in the end, so stick with it, because we did some thinking, we did some questioning, and we did a whole lot of laughing. There is some astrology talk near the end, but the bulk of this discussion centers around some of Mike's work in his Occult Science video series on YouTube, which gives a comprehensive dissection of the belief system of the "elite", which is based on the work of Helena Blavatsky. In his video series, Mike addresses the major differences between adept occultism, orthodox religion and mainstream scientism, and this chat serves as a nice introduction to his work. Of course I take issue with that word elite, so we argue about that a bit too. And we also talk some about my interpretation of Manly Palmer Hall's book "The Secret Destiny of America". This time around we're chatting with Gilbert Bates, author of a book I stumbled across earlier this year called "Love and the Three Levels of Consciousness". Gil has authored a couple other books on similar themes, but this is the one that we focus on for the purpose of this conversation. The book is about the three levels of the brain, the brainstem, the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex, and how early emotional trauma is registered as a painful sensation in the lower brain, the brainstem. The need to repress this pain from conscious awareness leads to a disconnection between the cognitive brain and the social and emotional brain. Gil posits that the disconnection between these three distinct levels as well as the lack of essential input from the deeper sensing/feeling brain areas are the root cause of nearly all mental illness, and the reason why humans have so much trouble relating to each other in loving ways. We also talk a bit about how to heal ourselves with primal therapy, which is a therapeutic theory and process invented by Dr. Arthur Janov that's designed to take a subject deep into their social and emotional brain and clear out the traumas that affect us all in some form or another. This book gave me some feels that I hadn't felt before, and you'll find out why during the course of our chat here.
