Ep 38LF38 Dean Puckett – Anarchy and Activism in an Age of Austerity

E

Dean Puckett discusses his latest film Grasp the Nettle, a documentary which follows the exploits of a ragtag band of land rights activists in London as they struggle against corporations, government, police – and themselves – in their efforts to create alternative communities outside the framework of consumer society. When an eco-village pops up on a piece of disused land in West London, Dean gives up everything – his flat, job and normal life – to live among its eclectic inhabitants in an effort to understand what makes them tick. Before he knows it, he is pulled into an epic, inspiring and at times harrowing journey of discovery, as he follows the villagers from the suburbs to the heart of London outside the Palace of Westminster, where they occupy Parliament Square. Their ranks swelled by the homeless, the visionaries and eccentrics of the new-found Democracy Village clash with authority, and each other, as they grapple with how to balance their ideals of freedom with the increasing chaos around them. Shot over three years in the aftermath of the 2008 banking collapse, Grasp the Nettle is an intimate exploration of the rise and fall of two radical social experiments, pioneered by the loved and the lost of a city reeling from the impact of economic and ecological crisis. In the process, it asks hard questions about the nature of freedom and the meaning of activism in these ‘interesting times’. www.graspthenettlefilm.com www.deaddeanfilms.co.uk Related interview: Nafeez Ahmed Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Peter Baumann ‘Meridian Moorland’

Ep 37LF37 Jim Holt – Why Does the World Exist?

E

Jim Holt discusses his book Why Does the World Exist? ‘Why is there a world rather than nothing at all?’ remains the most curious and enduring of all metaphysical mysteries. Moving beyond the narrower paths of Christopher Hitchens, Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking, celebrated essayist Holt enters this fascinating debate with a broad, lively and deeply informed narrative that traces all our efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. With sly humour and a highly original personal approach, Holt takes on the role of cosmological detective. Suggesting that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to God and the Big Bang, he tracks down, among others, an eccentric Oxford philosopher, a Nobel Laureate physicist, a French Buddhist monk, and novelist John Updike just before he died, to pursue this cosmic puzzle from every angle. As he pieces together a solution – while offering useful insights into time, consciousness, and eternity – he sheds fascinating new light on the meaning of existence. Ep 36LF36 James Swagger – Astronomy, Atlantis and Apocalypse in Megalithic Europe

E

Author James Swagger on his book The Newgrange Sirius Mystery: Linking Passage Grave Cosmology with Dogon Symbology. Topics discussed include archaeology, astronomy, alternative history, rock art, Atlantis, Hyperborea and lost civilizations, The Deluge and sunken land masses, polar shifts, solar flares, entheogens and altered states of consciousness, and the design and purpose of megalithic sites throughout Europe. James was first introduced to topical science writing for a historical mysteries magazine in Ireland. This whetted his appetite for researching ancient knowledge and lost science, and he initially sought out the megalithic monuments of Western Europe in his spare time. His embrace of a multidisciplinary approach to the research of megalithic sites, and the larger view of passage grave cosmology, produced his first book, The Newgrange Sirius Mystery. Ep 34LF34 Amit Goswami – Quantum Consciousness: The Mind of God

E

Dr. Amit Goswami discusses some of the ideas and concepts in his book God Is Not Dead: What Quantum Physics Tells Us about Our Origins and How We Should Live. Dr. Goswami’s hypothesis is that quantum physics holds the key to all the unsolved mysteries of biology – the nature and origin of life, fossil gaps of evolution, why evolution proceeds from simple to complex, and why biological beings have feeling and consciousness. In God Is Not Dead, Goswami moves beyond theory and shows how a God-based science puts ethics and values where they belong: at the centre of our lives and societies. He provides a scientific model that steers between scientific materialism and religious fundamentalism; a model that has implications for how we live both individually and collectively. Dr. Goswami is a theoretical nuclear physicist and professor emeritus of physics at the University of Oregon, where he taught for 30 years. He was featured in the hit movie What the Bleep Do We Know? and in Who’s Driving the Dream Bus? He is the author of many books, including The Self-Aware Universe, and is considered the founder of the new paradigm of science called science within consciousness. www.amitgoswami.org www.quantumactivist.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Klaus Schulze ‘Schwanensee I’

Ep 33LF33 Thomas Sheridan – The Anvil of the Psyche: Part Two

E

Author Thomas Sheridan on his latest book The Anvil of the Psyche. This is a two part interview. Part one is here. Ask yourself: what is popular culture? How does it come into existence? How do universally accepted ideas of art and creativity, mass media, publishing and financial constructs, and political and social doctrines arise? Are mass social and cultural movements – coupled with one’s personal and social identity – always a natural flow of social, economic, philosophical, spiritual and artistic threads of the collective human experience? Do they organically emerge from the underground to gradually become mainstream cultural and social consensus? And from these options and opinions, do we pick and choose objectively? Do we, as the consumer, the investor, the voter make our individual decisions, affiliations, allegiances and even our emotional attachments, determined exclusively by our own choices? The answer to all these questions is NO! In The Anvil of the Psyche, Thomas Sheridan seeks to show us how controlled we really are, the often detrimental effects this has upon us, and what we can do to build a firewall for our minds. Topics discussed include politics, sport, advertising, mainstream media, personal identity and perception, magic and symbolism, conceptual and modern art, Hollywood, and popular music including The Beatles, Lady Gaga and U2. www.thomassheridanarts.com Illustration by David Dees Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’

Ep 31LF31 Dave Gardner – Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth

E

Director Dave Gardner discusses his film GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth. This ground-breaking documentary challenges our beliefs linking growth with prosperity and fulfilment. The film explores how our attitudes toward economics, consumption and population growth prevent rational responses to evidence that we’ve outgrown the planet. In this David vs. Goliath story, Dave shares his own personal story of daring to challenge our growth-worshipping system. He is rebuked by elected officials who are deacons of the church of growth everlasting, takes on millionaire real-estate developers enriched by public subsidies, and tackles economists who spin pro-growth propaganda. GrowthBusters weaves the tale of Dave’s efforts to wean his hometown from growth addiction with an examination of the most critical global issues of our time. Interviews with leading thinkers, animation and humorous skits debunk the ‘grow or die’ myth. Cultural myths and taboos are exposed and explored. Providing a ray of hope, the film also profiles groups and individuals exploring alternatives and moving the world toward true sustainability. Ep 30LF30 Nafeez Ahmed – The Crisis of Civilization

E

Author and international security analyst Dr Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed on The Crisis of Civilization. Dr Ahmed is author of A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save It, and co-producer of The Crisis of Civilization. It often seems that different crises are competing to devastate civilization. The Crisis of Civilization argues that financial meltdown, environmental degradation, dwindling oil reserves, terrorism and food shortages need to be considered as part of the same ailing system. Most accounts of our contemporary global crises focus on one area, or another, to the exclusion of others. The Crisis of Civilization suggests that the unwillingness of experts to look outside their own fields explains why there is so much disagreement and misunderstanding about the nature of the global threats we face. The Crisis of Civilization attempts to investigate all of these problem areas, not as isolated events, but as trends and processes that belong to a single global system. We are therefore not dealing with a ‘clash of civilizations’ as Samuel Huntington argued. Nor have we witnessed ‘the end of history’ that Francis Fukuyama prematurely declared. Rather, we are dealing with the end of the industrial age, a fundamental crisis of civilization itself. Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Ulf Langheinrich ‘Degrees of Amnesia’

Ep 29LF29 Harvey Molotch – Against Security

E

Sociologist Harvey Molotch on his book Against Security: How We Go Wrong at Airports, Subways, and Other Sites of Ambiguous Danger. Remember when an unattended package was just that, an unattended package? Remember when the airport was a place that evoked magical possibilities, not the anxiety of a full-body scan? In the post-9/11 world, we have become focused on heightened security measures, but do you feel safer? Are you safer? Against Security explains how our anxieties about public safety have translated into command-and-control procedures that annoy, intimidate, and are often counterproductive. Taking readers through varied ambiguously dangerous sites, Molotch argues that we can use our existing social relationships to make life safer and more humane. He begins by addressing the misguided strategy of eliminating public restrooms, which deprives us all of a basic resource and denies human dignity to those with no place else to go. Subway security instills fear through programs like ‘See Something, Say Something’ and intrusive searches that have yielded nothing of value. At the airport, the security gate causes crowding and confusion, exhausting the valuable focus of TSA staff. Finally, Molotch shows how defensive sentiments have translated into the vacuous Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site and massive error in New Orleans, both before and after Hurricane Katrina. Throughout, Molotch offers thoughtful ways of maintaining security that are not only strategic but improve the quality of life for everyone. Against Security argues that with changed policies and attitudes, redesigned equipment, and an increased reliance on our human capacity to help one another, we can be safer and maintain the pleasure and dignity of our daily lives. Ep 28LF28 Dr. Eric Karlstrom – The Political, Economic and Social Agendas of Climate Change

E

Dr. Eric Karlstrom on the political, economic and social agendas surrounding the issue of climate change. Dr. Karlstrom is a former Professor of Geography at California State University. The World is clearly facing an environmental crisis. Some of the problems of pollution and resource depletion are so serious that they risk the extinction of entire species and perhaps even all life on Earth. More than any other risk, however, the danger posed by global warming – now known as ‘climate change’ – looms largest over the planet. The causes of climate change are hotly debated, but the dominant view today is that human activity – specifically the burning of fossil fuels and associated discharge of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the Earth’s atmosphere – is by far the most significant. As a result, massive programmes designed to permanently change our society, economy, lifestyle and the way we interact with nature are being implemented. These aim to drastically cut our energy use, material standard of living and, ultimately, the human population. But what if the mainstream understanding of the causes of climate change is flawed? Is it possible that the shifts in weather activity we are witnessing are simply part of a much larger picture, one in which the Earth’s climate is forever changing and evolving over millions – even billions – of years? We undoubtedly need to use less energy, clean up the environment and conserve the valuable natural resources without which we cannot survive, but we must do so in the right way, and for the right reasons. Following years of research and with highly specialized knowledge, Dr. Karlstrom has concluded that the issue of climate change has been dangerously corrupted, and that it is being exploited to serve nefarious political, economic and social agendas. www.naturalclimatechange.us www.911nwo.com www.erickarlstrom.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Cyberchump ‘On The Ice’

Ep 27LF27 Ben Dyson – Positive Money: A Simple Solution to the Debt Crisis

E

Ben Dyson of Positive Money on the problems caused by our debt-based monetary system and some of the solutions which offer a way out. Positive Money is a not-for-profit research and campaign group who work to raise awareness of the connections between our current monetary and banking system and some of the biggest social, economic and environmental challenges that we face today. In particular, Positive Money focus on the role of banks in creating the nation’s money supply through the accounting process they use when they make loans – an aspect of banking which is poorly understood. Positive Money believe these fundamental flaws are at the root of – or a major contributor to – problems of poverty, excessive debt, growing inequality and environmental degradation. Ep 25LF25 Douglas Carswell – The End of Politics and the Birth of iDemocracy

E

Douglas Carswell MP on his latest book The End of Politics and the Birth of iDemocracy. The West is in crisis. Governments have grown too big, living beyond their means – and ours. The true costs of extra officialdom have been concealed. Parasitical politicians have been hopeless at holding to account the elites who now preside over us. As a result, Western nations are mired in debt and chronically misgoverned. Should we despair? In The End of Politics and the Birth of iDemocracy Douglas Carswell argues that we should not. Precisely because the West’s Big Government model is bust, things are going to have to change. The West is on the cusp of dramatic changes driven by the failure of her elites, technology and mathematics. At the precise moment Big Government becomes unaffordable, the internet revolution makes it possible to do without it. Be optimistic. We are going to be able to manage without government – and thrive. The old political and economic order is about to give way to something vastly better. Douglas Carswell was first elected as a member of the British Parliament in 2005. Prior to entering politics, he worked in commercial television and then fund management. Co-author of best-selling book, The Plan: 12 Months to Renew Britain, Douglas is an advocate of radical political reform. In 2009, UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph nominated him a Briton of the Year, and Spectator magazine readers voted him Parliamentarian of the Year. He blogs each day at www.TalkCarswell.com and has written for the Financial Times, Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday, News of the World, Telegraph and Spectator, as well as appearing on the Politics Show, Newsnight, Sky and Radio 4’s Week in Westminster and Westminster Hour. www.douglascarswell.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Tangerine Dream ‘White Eagle’

Ep 23LF23 Richard Grove – What We Can All Learn from John Taylor Gatto

E

Richard Grove of Tragedy and Hope on the topic of compulsory public education and specifically the work of author and former New York schoolteacher of the year John Taylor Gatto, and the 2012 film The Ultimate History Lesson. Gatto is the author of Weapons of Mass Instruction which focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a by-product of rote-memorisation drills. His earlier book, Dumbing Us Down introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. This book adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling. Gatto demonstrates that the harm school inflicts is rational and deliberate. The real function of pedagogy, he argues, is to render the common population manageable. To that end, young people must be conditioned to rely upon experts, to remain divided from natural alliances and to accept disconnections from their own lived experiences. They must at all costs be discouraged from developing self-reliance and independence. Escaping this trap requires a strategy Gatto calls ‘open source learning’ which imposes no artificial divisions between learning and life. Through this alternative approach our children can avoid being indoctrinated. Only then can they achieve self-knowledge, good judgement, and courage. Ep 22LF22 Bruce Lipton – Science, Spirituality and the Global Shift in Consciousness

E

Bruce H Lipton, Ph.D. on his books The Biology of Belief and Spontaneous Evolution. Dr. Lipton is an internationally recognized authority on bridging science and spirit. His groundbreaking book The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles documents the amazing new awareness that is currently rewriting the science of biology and medicine – awareness that the mind’s perception of the environment, not genes, controls life at the cellular level. Dr. Lipton describes his own life as “radically transformed” because of his research: “Though I sought science as an alternate to accepting spiritual truths, lessons learned revealed that life was not an issue of science OR spirituality, it was an amalgam of science AND spirituality.” Through the research of Dr. Lipton and other leading-edge scientists, stunning new discoveries have been made about the interaction between your mind and body and the processes by which cells receive information. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology, that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our thoughts. The new science of Epigenetics is revolutionising our understanding of the link between mind and matter and the profound effects it has on our personal lives and the collective life of our species. In Spontaneous Evolution, Dr. Lipton and political philosopher Steve Bhaerman reveal how our changing understanding of biology will help us navigate this turbulent period in our planet’s history and how each of us can participate in this global shift. www.brucelipton.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Bernard Xolotl ‘Procession’

Ep 19LF19 Steve Taylor – Back to Sanity: Healing the Madness of Our Minds

E

Steve Taylor on his book Back to Sanity – Healing the Madness of Our Minds. Have you ever thought that there might be something wrong with human beings, even that we might be slightly insane? Why is it that so many human beings are filled with a restless discontent, and an insatiable desire for material goods, status and power? Why is it that human history has been filled with endless conflict, oppression and inequality? In Back to Sanity, Steve Taylor shows that we do suffer from a psychological disorder, which he refers to as humania, or ego-madness. This disorder is so close to us that we don’t realize it’s there, but it’s the root cause of all our dysfunctional behaviour, both as individuals and as a species. This book explains the characteristics of humania, where it stems from and how it leads to the madness of materialism, status-seeking, warfare, inequality and other symptoms of our insanity. But equally importantly, Back to Sanity shows how we can heal this mental disorder and allow the fleeting moments of harmony that we all experience from time to time to become our permanent state of being. Steve Taylor is a lecturer in psychology at Leeds Metropolitan University, and the author of several best-selling books on psychology and spirituality. These include Waking From Sleep, The Fall, Out of the Darkness and his new book Back to Sanity. His books have been published in 13 languages, and his work has been described by Eckhart Tolle as ‘an important contribution to the shift in consciousness which is happening on our planet at present.’ Steve’s articles and essays have been published in over 40 academic journals, magazines and newspapers, including The Journal of Humanistic Psychology, The Journal of Consciousness Studies, The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, Psychologies, Natural Health, Kindred Spirit and Resurgence. His work has been featured widely in the media in the UK, including on BBC Breakfast, BBC World TV, BBC Radio 4 and 5, and in The Guardian and The Independent. www.stevenmtaylor.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Klaus Schulze ‘Dune’

Ep 18LF18 Michael Cremo – Forbidden Archaeology and Human Devolution

E

Michael Cremo discusses his books Forbidden Archaeology and Human Devolution, and what they tell us about true nature of human origins, identity and destiny. Over the past two centuries researchers have found bones and artifacts showing that people like ourselves existed on earth millions of years ago. But the scientific establishment has ignored these remarkable facts because they contradict the dominant views of human origins and antiquity. In Forbidden Archaeology, Michael Cremo and Richard L. Thompson challenge us to rethink our understanding of human origins, identity, and destiny. Forbidden Archaeology takes on one of the most fundamental components of the modern scientific world view, and invites us to take a courageous first step towards a new perspective. If Darwinian evolution is not the answer, then this begs the question: “If we did not evolve from apes, then where did we come from?” Human Devolution is Michael Cremo’s definitive answer to this question. “We did not evolve up from matter; instead we devolved, or came down, from the realm of pure consciousness, spirit,” says Cremo. He bases his response on modern science and the world’s great wisdom traditions, including the Vedic philosophy of ancient India. Cremo proposes that before we ask the question, “Where did human beings come from?’ we should first contemplate, “What is a human being?” Cremo asserts that humans are a combination of matter, mind, and consciousness, or spirit. Human Devolution contains solid scientific evidence showing how a subtle mind element and a conscious self that can exist apart from the body have been systematically eliminated from mainstream science by a process of knowledge filtration. “Any time knowledge filtration takes place you can expect a great deal of resistance, criticism, and ridicule when it is exposed and challenged,” says Cremo. Michael Cremo is a member of the World Archaeological Congress and the European Association of Archaeologists as well as an associate member of the Bhaktivedanta Institute specializing in history and philosophy of science. His latest book, My Science My Religion, is published in November 2012. www.mcremo.com Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Popol Vuh ‘Aguirre’

Ep 17LF17 Peter Reynolds – Cannabis, Freedom and the Law

E

Peter Reynolds on Cannabis, freedom and the law. Peter is leader of the UK political party CLEAR, a single issue party that seeks an end to the prohibition of cannabis. We discuss the history of cannabis prohibition, widespread ignorance and disinformation concerning cannabis, five thousand years of its recreational and medicinal use, risks vs benefits and prospects for decriminalisation. (Click below to listen) CLEAR’s aims and objectives: 1. To end the prohibition of cannabis. Prohibition is a big, dumb, and very expensive failure. It is brutal. It puts prejudice before people. The ‘war on drugs’ is responsible for more death, destruction and despair than it has ever prevented. History has shown that prohibition creates far more problems than it solves. In the 21st century we should expect far better solutions from our policy makers and governments. 2. To promote as a matter of urgency and compassion the prescription of medicinal cannabis by doctors. No reasonable human being can deny another relief from pain, suffering or disability. There is no rational argument against permitting access to medicinal cannabis for those who need it. The fact that the British government and the deeply rooted bureaucracy of the Home Office stand in the way is a deep and lasting shame on our nation. 3. To introduce a system of regulation for the production and supply of cannabis based on facts and evidence. Authoritative research from the Independent Drug Monitoring Unit proves that a cannabis tax and regulate regime in Britain would produce a boost to the UK economy of at least £6 billion per annum. That’s based on a cannabis tax of £1 per gram, massive savings in law enforcement costs but allowing for the cost of administering the system and providing additional healthcare and education services. All the evidence and experts agree that a responsibly regulated system would also reduce all health and social harms. 4. To encourage the production and use of industrial hemp. The prohibition of cannabis has caused huge damage to our society, environment and economy by preventing the cultivation of hemp. Although the industrial strains of the plant have no psychoactive potential, the absurd level of control has effectively destroyed its value as an agricultural crop. With that we have lost the most efficient producer of biomass in the natural world, the strongest natural fibre, a better fabric than cotton, a better paper than wood and one of the most ecologically important activities on the planet. 5. To educate and inform about the uses and benefits of cannabis. Prejudice is based on ignorance. In the case of cannabis there is also deliberate misinformation. It started with Randolph Hearst, the media, timber and oil magnate of the 1930s and it continues today with the vested interests of alcohol, tobacco, Big Pharma and, yes, media, timber and oil. The truth about cannabis is clear and we have to spread the truth in the face of ignorance and lies. www.clear-uk.org Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Steve Hillage ‘Rainbow Dome Musick’

Ep 15LF15 Chris Johnstone – Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in Without Going Crazy

E

Chris Johnstone on his book Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy. Co-authored with Joanna Macy, Active Hope is about finding, and offering, our best response to the crisis of sustainability unfolding in our world. It starts by accepting that the challenges we face can be difficult even to look at: climate change, the depletion of oil, economic collapse and the die-back of our natural world act together to create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. Active Hope offers an approach that strengthens our capacity to face disturbing information and respond with unexpected resilience and creative power. Drawing on decades of experience running workshops in an empowerment approach widely known as The Work That Reconnects, the authors guide the reader through a transformational process informed by mythic journeys, modern psychology, holistic science and spiritual perspectives. This process equips readers with tools to help them face the mess we’re in and find and play their role in the collective transition, or Great Turning, to a life-sustaining society. At the heart of this book is the idea that Active Hope is a gift that is not only given but also received. The journey of finding, and offering, our gift of contribution helps us to discover new strengths, open to a wider network of allies and experience a deepening of our aliveness. When our responses are guided by the intention to act for healing of our world, the mess we’re in not only becomes easier to face, our lives also become more meaningful and satisfying. www.activehope.info www.chrisjohnstone.info Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Vangelis ‘1492 – Conquest of Paradise’

Ep 14LF14 Keith Farnish – Time’s Up! An Uncivilized Solution to a Global Crisis

E

Following recent interviews with Joseph Tainter and John Michael Greer, the third instalment of our mini-series investigating the inevitable collapse of industrial civilization welcomes activist and author Keith Farnish to discuss some of the key issues raised in his book Time’s Up! An Uncivilized Solution to a Global Crisis. Keith is a father, a writer, a thinker, a grower, a baker, a maker, a talker and a listener who is learning to once again connect with the real world. He lives in a village in the Scottish Borders with a wife, two children and six chickens. Time’s Up! is his first book and was published in March 2009. He recently completed the follow-up, Underminers. Some of his other writings can be read at The Earth Blog and The Unsuitablog. Time’s Up is not an environmental book, even though it is concerned with the environment. It is not a book to save the world, even though the world is clearly in trouble. Ultimately, Time’s Up is a book about survival; about ensuring that every individual human has the means to save herself or himself from the global crisis that is unfolding. People know that the climate is changing, that species are being removed from the Earth at a rapidly increasing rate, that entire ecosystems are becoming shadows of their former richness; they know, but they do not understand. The global environmental crisis is closing in on humanity from all directions, yet the crisis barely registers on this culture’s list of problems. As we stand, humanity is doomed to a collapse that will leave only a few nomads, and a toxic, barely survivable Earth in its wake. So why is nothing being done beyond changing light bulbs, recycling and buying organic food? It’s certainly not for a lack of good reasons. Humans have no motivation stronger than survival, yet the culture that dominates – the culture we call Industrial Civilization – has created a set of priorities that value financial wealth, the possession of superfluous goods and short, cheap thrills, above that most basic need. In short, we are prepared to die in order to live a life that is killing us. Time’s Up is all about changing this. It describes what our actions are doing to the very things on Earth that we depend on for survival, at scales that we rarely contemplate. It arms us with the tools to free us from the culture that has blinded us for centuries, and which will allow us to live lives that will give the Earth, and ourselves, a future. Time’s Up! proposes something radical, fundamental and frightening; something long-term, exhilarating and absolutely necessary; something totally uncivilized. Ep 13LF13 John Michael Greer – The Ecotechnic Future

E

John Michael Greer on the future of a World without oil. In response to the coming impact of peak oil, John’s 2009 book The Ecotechnic Future helps us envision the transition from an industrial society to a sustainable ecotechnic world – not returning to the past, but creating a society that supports relatively advanced technology on a sustainable resource base. Topics discussed include: peak oil, the energy crisis, the myth of progress, the myth of apocalypse, societal collapse, abiotic oil, zero point energy, 2012 and political, economic and cultural disintegration. Fusing human ecology and history, The Ecotechnic Future challenges assumptions held by mainstream and alternative thinkers about the evolution of human societies. Human societies, like ecosystems, evolve in complex and unpredictable ways, making it futile to try to impose rigid ideological forms on the patterns of evolutionary change. Instead, social change must explore many pathways over which we have no control. The troubling and exhilarating prospect of an open-ended future, he proposes, requires dissensus – a deliberate acceptance of radical diversity that widens the range of potential approaches to infinity. For anyone concerned about peak oil and the future of industrial society, The Ecotechnic Future provides a solid analysis of how we got to where we are and offers a practical toolkit to prepare for the future. John is a certified Master Conserver, organic gardener, and scholar of ecological history. Ep 12LF12 Joseph Tainter – The Energy Crisis and the End of The Industrial Age

E

The Energy Crisis and the end of The Industrial Age with Dr Joseph Tainter of Utah State University. Dr Tainter is perhaps best known as the author of The Collapse of Complex Societies and amongst various other publications he also co-authored Drilling Down: The Gulf Oil Debacle and Our Energy Dilemma. The discussion focusses on areas covered by both books, specifically the energy that industrial society depends on for its survival and continued growth and what happens when the supply of this energy begins to decline on the road to running out. Topics discussed include: peak oil, the 2010 Gulf oil disaster, competition and conflict for resources, renewable energy, decline of technological innovation, the green movement and sustainable development, the energy/complexity spiral and the collapse of society. Background: For more than a century, oil has been the engine of growth for a society that delivers an unprecedented standard of living to many. We now take for granted that economic growth is good, necessary, and even inevitable, but also feel a sense of unease about the simultaneous growth of complexity in the processes and institutions that generate and manage that growth. As societies grow more complex through the bounty of cheap energy, they also confront problems that seem to increase in number and severity. In this era of fossil fuels, cheap energy and increasing complexity have been in a mutually-reinforcing spiral. The more energy we have and the more problems our societies confront, the more we grow complex and require still more energy. Our demand for energy, our technological prowess, the resulting need for complex problem solving and the end of easy oil are now conspiring to make the end of the industrial age a certainty. It’s no longer a question of if, but when. Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Redshift ‘Redshift’

Helen Sewell on the astrology of 2012. Topics discussed include: 2012, astrology, astronomy, psychology, science Vs spirituality, 9/11, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics, societal collapse, beyond 2012 and the mass awakening of human consciousness. Helen is a fully qualified professional astrologer with 25 years experience. She first became interested in astrology through reading books on the Sun signs when she was a teenager and it was then that she realised there was a definite correlation between what she read and the characteristics she could recognise in the people she knew. As Helen’s astrological reading broadened, Liz Greene became her favourite author and she then decided to take the opportunity to train under her guidance at the Centre for Psychological Astrology at Regents College in London. After four years Helen attained the Diploma in Psychological Astrology and went on to set up a private practice. After meeting Geoff Stray in 2002, and reading his book Beyond 2012, Helen has been looking at the astrological significance of this time and has reached some very interesting conclusions. In recent years Helen has also become interested in the bigger cycles of the outer planets and how they affect individual countries and society at large. www.astrologicalinsights.co.uk Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Jean Michel Jarre ‘Waiting for Cousteau’

Ep 8LF8 Scott Tips – Codex Alimentarius and the Threat to Health Freedom

E

National Health Federation president Scott Tips on Codex Alimentarius and the threat to health freedom. Increasingly draconian restrictions are being placed on vitamins and other food supplements at a time when a growing number of people are beginning to take health care and illness prevention into their own hands. Avoidance of institutionalized healthcare is likely to increase as long as corporate influence on government continues and the medical establishment holds the interests of pharmaceutical corporations and other related businesses over those of the individual. Background The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), based inRome,Italy, is an international organization jointly created by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations. The Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Use (CCNFSDU) is responsible for Dietary Supplements and Medical Foods and is one of some 27 separate Codex committees. The CCNFSDU meets annually and the National Health Federation is a Codex-recognized organization with the right to attend and speak out at these meetings. Established in 1955, the National Health Federation is an international nonprofit, consumer-education, health-freedom organization working to protect individuals’ rights to choose to consume healthy food, take supplements and use alternative therapies without government restrictions. The purpose of Codex is to provide a forum to facilitate global trade in foods and promote consumer food safety by developing science based standards and guidelines for use by member countries. Codex guidelines and standards are automatically implemented by the General Agreement on Trade & Tariffs (GATT) of the WHO and become binding for all international trade among GATT signatory countries. The National Health Federation opposes the current Codex member states who wrongly believe that consumer health will be enhanced by: (1) denying that dietary supplements can benefit normal, healthy people; (2) incorrectly defining dietary supplements as only those vitamins and minerals that the body cannot manufacture itself; (3) restricting the upper-limit amounts of vitamins and minerals, particularly by referring to currently-crude and archaic medical beliefs about nutrients; (4) restricting any physiological benefit information for consumers; (5) restricting the lower-limit amounts of vitamins and minerals that may be consumed by individuals; and (6) creating ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ lists of dietary supplements. The current direction of Codex is off course and is unfortunately driven by a statist and elitist mentality that thinks it knows what is best for consumer health and protection. This mindset comes from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s kind of ‘brave new world’ thinking that elevated central planners into a form of God on Earth. That kind of out-dated thinking has caused more misery, death and disease than can possibly be imagined. With the doubling time of knowledge constantly accelerating, mankind cannot afford the ‘luxury’ of getting stuck in health standards established in the 20th Century while new health knowledge and products are discovered almost daily. The best way to ensure such progress and advancing health is to keep the planners and bureaucrats from straitjacketing dietary supplements with medievalist thinking and restrictions. Ep 7LF7 John Michael Greer – The Long Descent

E

John Michael Greer on peak oil and the end of the industrial age. In his compelling book The Long Descent, John presents a challenging new vision of the future, traces the decline and fall of an industrial society fatally out of balance with planetary limits and shows how personal change and local action can shape a better tomorrow. Topics discussed include: peak oil, the energy crisis, nuclear power, the myth of progress, the myth of apocalypse, the global financial crisis, population growth, technology, societal collapse, survivalism, getting rid of your TV and – the good news – beer. Background The world is finally beginning to wake up to its critical dependence on oil and the vitally important issues associated with it such as rapidly rising energy prices and the threat of climate change. Unlike the energy crisis of the 1970s, however, there is a lurking fear that now the times are different and the crisis may not easily be resolved. The Long Descent examines the basis of such fear through three core themes: 1. Industrial society is following the same well-worn path that has led other civilizations into decline, a path involving a much slower and more complex transformation than the sudden catastrophes imagined by so many social critics today. 2. The roots of the crisis lie in the cultural stories that shape the way we understand the world. Since problems cannot be solved with the same thinking that created them, these ways of thinking need to be replaced with others better suited to the needs of our time. 3. It is too late for massive programmes to implement top-down change; the change must come from individuals. Hope exists in actions that range from taking up a handicraft or adopting an ‘obsolete’ technology, through planting an organic vegetable garden, taking charge of your own health care or spirituality, and building community. John Michael Greer is a certified Master Conserver, organic gardener, and scholar of ecological history. Ep 6LF6 Chris Cole - Drone Wars: The Future of Combat and Surveillance

E

Chris Cole of Drone Wars UK on the growing use of drones in combat and surveillance. As governments and military increasingly engage in warfare and spying by remote control, who – or what – is really in charge? Aerial drones and ground-based robots are becoming ever more intelligent and autonomous. Once they become self-aware, will humans finally be removed from split-second, life-and-death decisions? Topics covered include the development and deployment of drones, risks and rewards of the technology, legal and ethical objections, Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, terrorism, extrajudicial assassinations, autonomous and self-aware drones, non-military use of drones, robots and other land-based systems, and how drones are shaping the future of war and surveillance. Background: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS), also known as drones, are aircraft either controlled by ‘pilots’ from the ground or increasingly, autonomously following a pre-programmed mission. While there are dozens of different types of drones, they basically fall into two categories: those that are used for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes and those that are armed with missiles and bombs. Use of drones has grown quickly in recent years because unlike manned aircraft they can stay aloft for many hours (Zephyr, a British drone under development, has just broken the world record by flying for over 82 hours non-stop), they are much cheaper than military aircraft and they are flown remotely so there is no danger to the flight crew. While the British and US Reaper and Predator drones are physically in Afghanistan and Iraq, control is via satellite from Nellis and Creech USAF base outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Ground crews launch drones from the conflict zone, then operation is handed over to controllers at video screens in specially designed trailers in the Nevada desert. One person ‘flies’ the drone, another operates and monitors the cameras and sensors, while a third person is in contact with the ‘customers’, ground troops and commanders in the war zone. While armed drones were first used in the Balkans war, their use has dramatically escalated in Afghanistan, Iraq and in the CIA’s undeclared war in Pakistan. The US has two separate ‘squadrons’ of armed drones – one run by the US Air Force and one run by the CIA. Using drones, the US Air Force has increased the number of combat air patrols it can fly by 600 per cent over the past six years; indeed at any time there are at least 36 American armed UAVS over Afghanistan and Iraq. CIA Director Leon Panetta has recently said that drones are ”’the only game in town.’ The CIA have been using drones in Pakistan and other countries to assassinate ”’terrorist leaders’. While this programme was initiated by the Bush Administration, it has increased under Obama and there have been 41 known drone strikes in Pakistan since Obama became President. Analysis by an American think tank The Brookings Institution on drone attacks in Pakistan has shown that for every militant leader killed, 10 civilians also have died. Military drone manufacturers are looking for civilian uses for remote sensing drones to expand their markets and this includes the use of drones for domestic surveillance. Drones will make possible the dramatic expansion of the surveillance state. With the convergence of other technologies it may even make possible machine recognition of faces, behaviours, and the monitoring of individual conversations. The sky, so to speak, is the limit. www.dronewars.net Bumper music: Cliff Martinez ‘Traffic OST’ Brad Fiedel ‘Terminator 2’ OST

E

Andy Thomas on the predictions and prophecies surrounding 2012, a time rife with both danger and opportunity. Will this year bring disaster to our planet, or will some positive shift in the Earth’s energy or human consciousness take place? Topics covered include: ancient prophecies, apocalypse culture, astrology, astronomy and cosmic cycles, the sun and solar activity, individual and collective consciousness, terrorism, the police state, and the symbols and significance of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. Andy Thomas is one of England’s most prolific authors and lecturers on unexplained mysteries, and speaks widely in the UK and abroad. Andy’s latest – and most major – investigation into the mystery realms, The Truth Agenda: Making Sense of Unexplained Mysteries, Global Cover-Ups and Prophecies for Our Times, was first published in 2009, and a revised and updated edition was issued in 2011. The book has been very successful in both alternative and mainstream circles, and has recently been adopted as a sociology textbook at Canada’s Vancouver Island University. Andy is author of seven other books exploring the unexplained, including the acclaimed Vital Signs: A Complete Guide to the Crop Circle Mystery (1998, revised 2002), which has been described by many as the definitive guide to the subject and was nominated for Kindred Spirit magazine’s 2002 Best Book award. Andy’s other books include Fields of Mystery: The Crop Circle Phenomenon in Sussex (1996), Quest For Contact: A True Story of Crop Circles, Psychics and UFOs (1997, with Paul Bura), Swirled Harvest: Views from the Crop Circle Frontline (2003), A Oneness of Mind: The Power of Collective Thought and Signs of Our Times (2003), and An Introduction to Crop Circles (2004, revised 2011). Andy has written for many other publications, including Kindred Spirit, and regularly contributes to the popular alternative journal Nexus Magazine. Andy is the founder of Vital Signs Publishing, which in 2005 produced Geoff Stray’s greatly influential and acclaimed book Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy (which Andy edited), exploring the many prophecies, ancient and modern, predicted to follow the year 2012. Ep 4LF4 Anthony Peake – The Labyrinth Of Time

E

Anthony Peake on his brand new book The Labyrinth of Time in which he explores the relationship between consciousness and reality and in the process puts forward an amazing hypothesis that can explain many enigmatic phenomena, including déjà vu, precognition, near-death experience and altered states. Central to his hypothesis is a new understanding of the nature of time and a radical updating of the theories of two of the twentieth century’s most original thinkers, Peter Ouspensky and J.W. Dunne. Anthony then looks at the concepts of time and how they have shaped our thinking as individuals through the prism of science, philosophy and literature. The book features a cutting-edge account of modern time theory, covering time-slips, precognitive dreams and the elasticity of time during moments of extreme stress, near-death experiences and certain stages of hypnotic trance. The Labyrinth of Time is as compelling and persuasive as Anthony’s previous books Is There Life After Death? and The Daemon. Topics covered include: the nature of time and reality, the mystery of consciousness, quantum physics, life after death, reincarnation, precognition, Groundhog Day, déjà vu, science Vs spirituality and some of the concepts shaping Anthony’s next book The Gateway to Infinity. Anthony grew up on the Wirral, near Liverpool. He was educated at Wirral Grammar School, Warwick University and the London School of Economics. He is a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, The Scientific & Medical Network and the Society for Psychical Research. In January 2011 he was offered, and accepted, a research fellowship at the Giordano Bruno Global Shift University. He has also recently been listed as one of the 200 ‘Visionaries’ for the 21st Century. Anthony has written a series of widely acclaimed books that focus on altered states of consciousness such as Near-Death Experience, the Out-of-Body Experience, Lucid Dreaming and Time Perception. In his work he is developing a model of consciousness that he terms ‘The Introsomatic Experience’. This suggests a radical new way of describing the relationship between conscious experience and the external world. His next book, The Gateway to Infinity will continue developing this theme. In this book Anthony will be reviewing the role of the pineal gland as both a generator of conscious experience and as a facilitator for contact to alternate dimensions of reality. Ep 3LF3 Ross Ashcroft – Four Horsemen

E

Director Ross Ashcroft discusses his new documentary film Four Horsemen which reveals the fundamental flaws in the global economic system which have brought our civilization to the brink of disaster. As the global economy continues to veer from crisis to catastrophe, many more people are looking for ideas on how to reshape the Western Economy. Four Horsemen brings together 23 global thinkers – many of them marginalized by the mainstream media – to explain how the world really works. Their views transcend mainstream and short-term political explanations to describe in simple terms what needs to be addressed in our universities, governments and corporate structures. We will not be returning to ‘business as usual’. Four Horsemen doesn’t get involved in banker bashing, criticising politicians or conspiracy theories. The film looks at the systems that we have chosen to live under and suggests ways we could change them. Four Horsemen pulls no punches in describing the consequences of continued inaction, but its message is ultimately one of hope. If more people can equip themselves with a better understanding of how the global economy functions, then the systems and structures that condemn billions to poverty or chronic insecurity can at last be overturned. Solutions to the multiple crises facing humanity have never been more urgent, but equally, the conditions for change have never been more favourable. With events veering out of the control of democratic governments and the global economy on life support for the foreseeable future, Four Horsemen is a catalyst to begin a debate around the solutions we urgently need.
