It's a prerequisite nowadays for Republicans to be indicted in order to run for office! But criminal activity is part of the MAGA game as one of Dear Leader Trump's spiritual advisors admitted he molested a 12-year old girl. It doesn't matter to MAGA, though, because gaining complete power is what they crave to enact their MAGA White Christian Nationalist "Project 2025" agenda.16:42-35:22-- Michigan Democratic State Representative Jason Morgan on his "Make It In Michigan" bill package that would divert millions of dollars from a corporate slush fund into investments in public transit, affordable housing, and community revitalization. Republicans call the trial a "sham," and "un-American," as they keep degrading our judicial system. This is part of a pattern by Michigan Republicans to destroy the institutions of our democratic republic. This is a vital victory for our economy, our environment, and our farmers! Lansing Democrats passed a clean energy and jobs act in 2024, and part of that law gave farmers the freedom to allow their land to be used for large wind and solar farm projects. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the law so that extreme local governments could no longer and their own block farmers from participating in joining in these large renewable energy projects. Pat explains why opponents wanted to get this repeal on this year's ballot, and why this is such a blow to their efforts. In the second segment, Andy Kroll from ProPublica joins the show to discuss an article he wrote on the civil war happening inside the Michigan Republican Party. Mr. Kroll is a native Michigander, and wrote about the battle between the longtime establishment Republicans vs. the growing insurgent "America First" faction of the party. And while the establishment may have prevailed for now, this fight continues, and it could be to the detriment of not just for Republicans, but for Donald Trump as well. Then, Michigan Democratic Party Rural Caucus Chair Mark Ludwig joins the show to talk about the work the Rural Caucus is doing to reach voters across the state of Michigan. Mr. Ludwig talks candidly on where Democrats are doing a better job, and where they aren't doing the best job, in attracting more rural voters to our side. Here's Episode 85 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast!They did it!Delta County voters sent pink slips to three extreme Christian Nationalist MAGA county commissioners in recall races this week! This is an area that's recently turned from blue to red, which is why that extreme brand of right-wing politics gained a hold of the county board. But after just one year in power, the people rejected that kind of extremism in their community, and voted for all three recall challengers this week, including good friend of the podcast, Democrat Kelli Van Ginhoven!Congrats, Kelli!But there was another major victory which is equally sending shockwaves across the state of Michigan. For sure, progressives have made some outstanding strides in terms of state politics with Democrats taking the state trifecta last year for the first time in four decades! But on the local political side, the right-wing has enjoyed some victories on that side. However, that appears to be changing, though, because we've got some big time local recalls happening in different parts of Michigan next week!There's a recall election happening where an extreme right-wing Ottawa Impact commissioner on the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is facing a challenger on May 7th. And in Upper Peninsula's Delta County, the people were able to get recall elections in place for three right-wing county commissioners. Those elections also take place on May 7th. One of those challengers returns on the podcast to talk about race. Kelli Van Ginhoven is taking-on Delta Co. Chair David Moyle in her bid to help defeat the MAGA majority. Supporters say this tax credit would incentivize work, and reward working families, and recent polling shows widespread support for this proposal.However, as we saw with the federal child tax credit in 2021, not only did the program cut child poverty in half, but unemployment dropped to record lows. Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel announced several charges against former Michigan Republican state House Speaker Lee Chatfield, and his wife, Stephanie, for operating a criminal enterprise! Just like Chatfield's hero, Dear Leader Trump, he will soon find himself in a courtroom. And Chatfield also finds himself following in the footsteps of fellow Republican state House Speaker, Rick Johnson! This is the Law & Order party? But while some policymakers work on finding ways to enrich themselves, there are many Michiganders working hard to enrich the lives of others. One good example is the Rx Kids program in Flint, which provides a no-strings attached cash allowances to mothers and their babies. Other countries have provided similar programs, and experienced success with fewer premature births, improved cognitive development for infants, and more. The program is a mix of public and private funds, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer is providing more money as part of her 2025 budget proposal. It's about transforming the social contract to expand opportunities for hard-working Michiganders. Dr. H. Luke Shaefer is the co-director of the Rx Kids program. Dr. Shaefer is a professor of social justice, social policy and public policy at the University of Michigan, and he gives us insight into Rx Kids, and what it ultimately hopes to achieve. Here's this week's LoL "Friday Short" for this April 12, 2024.The Michigan Board of Education passed a resolution this week asking the Democratic majority in the state legislature to pass laws requiring more transparency and accountability when it comes to charter schools. For years, charter schools haven't had to play by the same rules as public schools when it comes to accountability, even though charter schools receive taxpayer money!This resolution is a start of a movement that should've started long ago, and let's hope Michigan Democrats indeed pass legislation holding these institutions to the same standards as we hold our public schools. How can a guy, who didn't even know about the abortion rights proposal, which passed in 2022, portray himself as a true Michigander? Pat would like to know.Pat also congratulates friend of the podcast, Democratic State Rep. Betsy Coffia, on her hard work passing a law which allows Michiganders ages 16-to-17-and-a-half years old to pre-register to vote. That law is in effect, and now, those Michiganders can pre-register by going online using a driver's license or state ID, or they can pre-register in-person by visiting their local clerk's office. Again, Democrats work to engage more people to take part in our democracy, and to make voting more accessible. Then, Pat talks with Bridge Michigan business editor Paula Gardner on how corporate subsidies aren't working as promised here in the state. Ms. Gardner's fantastic investigative work into the state's corporate subsidy programs, and how these programs are leading to low-paying jobs, is a must-read. It's proving what many of us worry about when it comes to these "incentives." They aren't giving us the best results. No, he didn't address domestic violence, which is exactly what this is! No, he didn't address gun violence. And even though Trump said he talked with the victim's family, the family said he didn't talk to any family member! Plus, Trump didn't want to remind everyone how he torpedoed the Republican immigration bill in D.C.! It was about stoking anger and fear to his base while offering NO solutions. Time for the LoL "Friday Short" on this March 29, 2024Michigan Republican State Rep. Matt Maddock baselessly claimed on "X" that buses at Detroit Metro Airport were filled with "illegal invaders!" The only problem with such a claim? The people in those buses were members of the Gonzaga Men's Basketball Team, which is playing in the Sweet 16 of the men's college tournament in Detroit this weekend. Maddock refuses to admit his lie, and has doubled and tripled-down on the lie. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office argued in a federal appellate court that the fight to shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline belongs in a state court, and not in federal court. Enbridge, which owns the pipeline, argues that due to U.S.-Canadian treaty from 1977 means the battle ought to remain in federal court. But why isn't the Michigan Republican Party joining in Nessel's effort to protect Michigan's rights to protect herself against a foreign oil company? Republicans argue Texas has the right to protect its border, and their laws should override federal immigration laws due to "states' rights." Democrats also repealed the "No stricter than federal" law, which Republicans passed in 2018 that prevented the state from enacting stronger environmental protections. But if they'd like to put an exclamation on how much they put the environment above corporate greed, the Democratic majority must pass a renewed Polluter Pay bill! In 1991, lawmakers passed a polluter pay bill, making it mandatory for current and former landowners to clean up contaminated sites. But state Republicans overturned most of that bill, including the removal of holding corporations accountable for the sites they contaminated. Today, we've got over 24,000 contaminated sites, and taxpayers are paying for most of it. Democrats have unveiled a new, Polluter Pay bill, which would begin holding corporations accountable for polluting our land, air, and water. I talk about how within a year, Michigan Democrats passed some much-needed legislation to move the state forward in terms of women's reproductive rights, worker rights, union rights, setting-up a robust clean energy future, and protecting family farms. But despite those victories, Christian Nationalists within the Republican Party want to roll all of that back, and could possibly do that if we lose this November.I turn my focus on what's happening in the Upper Peninsula county of Delta because as we've seen happen in other counties across the state, the extreme right wing grabbed control of the Delta County Commission. But as we've seen in Ottawa County, activists in Delta County didn't sit back and allow their government to fall into extremism. Here's Episode 73 of Michigan's Premier, Progressive Podcast! As we've covered on the show, Michigan Democrats passed a rather robust package of clean energy bills last year. Many of those laws will go into effect later this year, including the 100% clean energy standard by 2040, energy efficient programs, increases in the state's energy reduction program, and removing the power of local governments to block large clean energy projects and placing that power in the Michigan Public Service Commission. Many right-wing local governments, driven by misinformation and fear, have rejected plan-after-plan to allow wind turbines or solar farms in their areas. This not only hurts the state's abilities to march towards a cleaner and more efficient energy program of the future (not to mention blocking thousands of green energy jobs), but it hurts family farmers who would allow their lands to be used for these projects. Montcalm County farmer, and Chair of Patriots for Montcalm, Dick Farnsworth joins me this week to talk about why he and so many other farmers not only want to be part of these projects, but also how these projects will help combat climate change and help them keep their land! Michigan Democrats made that happen while Republicans tried to block it. However, right wing forces, backed by some big money from the fossil fuel industry, have started an effort to repeal this law by collecting signatures so they can put it on this November's ballot. Mr. Farnsworth and I discuss how he and others are trying to fight back to combat climate change, and save family farms I open-up the show by talking about how Democrats have been given a great opportunity here in Michigan to show how the many policies they passed are helping hard-working Michiganders. By effectively communicating their achievements, Democrats will help President Biden's chances in this state. I close by giving my take on Jon Stewart's return to The Daily Show, and why I think we as progressives can't be so thinned-skin when he and other comedians make fun of our side. In my opening segment this week, I talk about the appalling and Islamophobic Wall Street Journal column declaring Dearborn, MI as the "America's Jihad Capital." Islamophobia within the right wing world never left, and it's putting lives in danger. I then cover some of the many new laws scheduled to go into effect in the state on February 13th, including the repeal of the anti-union "Right To Work (For Less) law, expanded voting rights, expanded LGBTQ+ rights, and an expansion of the state's Earned Income Tax Credit. Again, these laws passed thanks to progressive Democrats in the state legislature. Then, Dr. April Zeoli joins me to discuss some of the state's new gun safety laws that will also go into effect on Feb. 13th. Dr. Zeoli is the Policy Core Director for the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at The University of Michigan. She has spent years researching policies designed to decrease gun violence on the state-level, particularly in areas of interpersonal firearm violence. I conclude the episode by explaining how the Inflation Reduction Act, which congressional Democrats passed and President Biden signed into law in 2021, is already having a huge impact on tax cheats. Thanks to additional funding for the IRS as part of the IRA, the IRS will collect $561 billion dollars from rich tax cheaters. Like other school shootings, this was another example where "good guys with guns," didn't stop the bad guy with a gun.
