A recent Bridge Michigan article highlighted where red flag laws, which Michigan Democrats passed into law last year, didn't stop the horrific mass shooting at a Rochester Hills splash pad in Oakland County, MI. However, the law's already been used over 100 times since its passage, and if it saved one life, then the law's working as Michigan Democrats intended. No law is a panacea, and not every gun safety law will save every life. But that's still a hell of a lot better than MAGA Republicans, who'll do everything in their power to give more rights to the gun than to women's economic and reproductive health. Friske is now part of the MAGA crime wave that's spreading throughout Michigan, and the United States. This is a beautiful chance for Democrats to demonstrate how they truly care about the working class, not to mention how passing paid family leave would help them retain their slim majority in Lansing! Before Danielle joins this week's show, Pat spends the first segment talking about the continued improving economy, and why Biden and the Democrats should celebrate the good news of cooling inflation and corporations scaling-back on their rampant greedflation. It's not to say the economy is perfect. It's not, and millions of working people need help and are feeling squeezed, which is why a paid family leave bill would help even the playing field in Michigan. However, with cooling inflation and greedflation, and low unemployment, Democrats must remind voters how they once again saved the country from another failed MAGA Republican administration. This is part of a pattern by Michigan Republicans to destroy the institutions of our democratic republic. This is a vital victory for our economy, our environment, and our farmers! Lansing Democrats passed a clean energy and jobs act in 2024, and part of that law gave farmers the freedom to allow their land to be used for large wind and solar farm projects. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the law so that extreme local governments could no longer and their own block farmers from participating in joining in these large renewable energy projects. Pat explains why opponents wanted to get this repeal on this year's ballot, and why this is such a blow to their efforts. In the second segment, Andy Kroll from ProPublica joins the show to discuss an article he wrote on the civil war happening inside the Michigan Republican Party. Mr. Kroll is a native Michigander, and wrote about the battle between the longtime establishment Republicans vs. the growing insurgent "America First" faction of the party. And while the establishment may have prevailed for now, this fight continues, and it could be to the detriment of not just for Republicans, but for Donald Trump as well. Then, Michigan Democratic Party Rural Caucus Chair Mark Ludwig joins the show to talk about the work the Rural Caucus is doing to reach voters across the state of Michigan. Mr. Ludwig talks candidly on where Democrats are doing a better job, and where they aren't doing the best job, in attracting more rural voters to our side. If passed, it could help around 250,000 Michigan kids in just one year. Supporters say this tax credit would incentivize work, and reward working families, and recent polling shows widespread support for this proposal.However, as we saw with the federal child tax credit in 2021, not only did the program cut child poverty in half, but unemployment dropped to record lows. The program is a mix of public and private funds, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer is providing more money as part of her 2025 budget proposal. It's about transforming the social contract to expand opportunities for hard-working Michiganders. Dr. H. Luke Shaefer is the co-director of the Rx Kids program. Dr. Shaefer is a professor of social justice, social policy and public policy at the University of Michigan, and he gives us insight into Rx Kids, and what it ultimately hopes to achieve. Then, Pat talks with Bridge Michigan business editor Paula Gardner on how corporate subsidies aren't working as promised here in the state. Ms. Gardner's fantastic investigative work into the state's corporate subsidy programs, and how these programs are leading to low-paying jobs, is a must-read. Time for the LoL "Friday Short" on this March 29, 2024Michigan Republican State Rep. Matt Maddock baselessly claimed on "X" that buses at Detroit Metro Airport were filled with "illegal invaders!" The only problem with such a claim? The people in those buses were members of the Gonzaga Men's Basketball Team, which is playing in the Sweet 16 of the men's college tournament in Detroit this weekend. Maddock refuses to admit his lie, and has doubled and tripled-down on the lie. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office argued in a federal appellate court that the fight to shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline belongs in a state court, and not in federal court. Enbridge, which owns the pipeline, argues that due to U.S.-Canadian treaty from 1977 means the battle ought to remain in federal court. But why isn't the Michigan Republican Party joining in Nessel's effort to protect Michigan's rights to protect herself against a foreign oil company? Republicans argue Texas has the right to protect its border, and their laws should override federal immigration laws due to "states' rights." Here's the 75th episode of Michigan's premier progressive podcast.We've covered the ways Michigan Democrats are protecting the state's environment, and building a cleaner and more affordable energy future for both our environment and economy. Democrats also repealed the "No stricter than federal" law, which Republicans passed in 2018 that prevented the state from enacting stronger environmental protections. But if they'd like to put an exclamation on how much they put the environment above corporate greed, the Democratic majority must pass a renewed Polluter Pay bill! In 1991, lawmakers passed a polluter pay bill, making it mandatory for current and former landowners to clean up contaminated sites. But state Republicans overturned most of that bill, including the removal of holding corporations accountable for the sites they contaminated. Today, we've got over 24,000 contaminated sites, and taxpayers are paying for most of it. Democrats have unveiled a new, Polluter Pay bill, which would begin holding corporations accountable for polluting our land, air, and water. I talk about how within a year, Michigan Democrats passed some much-needed legislation to move the state forward in terms of women's reproductive rights, worker rights, union rights, setting-up a robust clean energy future, and protecting family farms. But despite those victories, Christian Nationalists within the Republican Party want to roll all of that back, and could possibly do that if we lose this November.I turn my focus on what's happening in the Upper Peninsula county of Delta because as we've seen happen in other counties across the state, the extreme right wing grabbed control of the Delta County Commission. But as we've seen in Ottawa County, activists in Delta County didn't sit back and allow their government to fall into extremism. Through hard work and networking, they got recall elections in place against three of those right-wing Republican county commissioners, and those races take place this May. One of the candidates running for those seats in the recall is Democrat Kelli van Ginhoven. Kelli's also the co-founder of Delta County Citizens For Ethical Leadership. She joins me to describe what's been happening in Delta County, and to explain why she and many others joined forces to push-back and get a recall on the ballot. Michigan Republican State Representative Josh Shriver was stripped of his committee assignments, and of his staff, after retweeting a racist tweet on the "Great Replacement Theory," which pervades the radical, right wing world. Naturally, Shriver's got his online defenders, but also defenders within the Michigan Republican Party. But make no mistake, Republicans court and depend on voters to believe in this misinformation and propaganda. They want Michigan to become Putin's Russia.
