A recent Bridge Michigan article highlighted where red flag laws, which Michigan Democrats passed into law last year, didn't stop the horrific mass shooting at a Rochester Hills splash pad in Oakland County, MI. However, the law's already been used over 100 times since its passage, and if it saved one life, then the law's working as Michigan Democrats intended. No law is a panacea, and not every gun safety law will save every life. But that's still a hell of a lot better than MAGA Republicans, who'll do everything in their power to give more rights to the gun than to women's economic and reproductive health. Pat explains why opponents wanted to get this repeal on this year's ballot, and why this is such a blow to their efforts. In the second segment, Andy Kroll from ProPublica joins the show to discuss an article he wrote on the civil war happening inside the Michigan Republican Party. Mr. Kroll is a native Michigander, and wrote about the battle between the longtime establishment Republicans vs. the growing insurgent "America First" faction of the party. Mr. Ludwig talks candidly on where Democrats are doing a better job, and where they aren't doing the best job, in attracting more rural voters to our side. This is an area that's recently turned from blue to red, which is why that extreme brand of right-wing politics gained a hold of the county board. But after just one year in power, the people rejected that kind of extremism in their community, and voted for all three recall challengers this week, including good friend of the podcast, Democrat Kelli Van Ginhoven!Congrats, Kelli!But there was another major victory which is equally sending shockwaves across the state of Michigan. Right-wing Christian Nationalist Lucy Ebel lost her seat in humiliating fashion to Democrat Christian Kleinjans in the Second District of the Ottawa County Board! It was a shot across the bow of the right-wing Ottawa Impact majority, which, like the MAGA majority on the Delta board, created nothing but cruelty and chaos on their community. And like the recall effort in Delta County, it took devoted people to get the recall effort started. Joe Spaulding, who has tons of experience in grassroots politics, played a key role in getting Lucy Ebel recalled. For sure, progressives have made some outstanding strides in terms of state politics with Democrats taking the state trifecta last year for the first time in four decades! Combine that with the UAW victories against the Big Three Detroit automakers last Fall, and the stunning UAW win at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee, workers are beginning to make some significant strides against management. If passed, it could help around 250,000 Michigan kids in just one year. Supporters say this tax credit would incentivize work, and reward working families, and recent polling shows widespread support for this proposal.However, as we saw with the federal child tax credit in 2021, not only did the program cut child poverty in half, but unemployment dropped to record lows. That's why the Rx Kids Flint program is something to watch when it comes to investing in our kids' futures.
