The government is unhappy about the cost of the Jeanie Johnston.

The intention was to build a replica of the famine-era boat and sail it to America and Canada.

The boat would give the people of those countries an insight into their connection to Ireland and the underworld.

The project also had an all-Ireland dimension and it was envisaged that young people from Unionist and Nationalist backgrounds would have the opportunity to train on it when the boat was being built.

But by the beginning of 2002 the project was facing major difficulties.

The underlying company was insolvent and there were cases pending in the High Court against it.

There were concerns that the company would have to shut down and dispose of the vessel.

The Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, Frank Fahey, established a focus group to investigate the matter and their conclusions can be read in an Aide Memoire prepared by the Minister for a Government meeting on the subject.

The company that was contracted failed to meet their deadlines and the budget that was set for them.

The boat was supposed to sail to America in 2001 but it wasn’t finished on time.

The focus group set up by the Minister did not put a dent in it in the report they gave him.

Take the boat into state ownership and use it as a training boat.

But the conclusion to be drawn from the focus group’s advice was that they could not envisage any long-term use for the boat “which will not involve the State in ongoing subvention to the project and financial risk.”

The Minister recommended that the County Council oversee the process of voluntary liquidation of the company dealing with the project; and find a way to continue with the project that would be satisfactory to all interested parties.

He suggested, however, that it would not be further funded: “in view of the widespread public disquiet over the financial excesses of this project, and the evidence of serious mismanagement by the Company, the Minister feels strongly that any such approach should include a rigorous examination of the project from its inception and a thorough investigation into the actions of the Company which led to the current financial position of the project.”

On 5 February 2002, the Government accepted the recommendation that Kerry County Council commence the process of voluntary liquidation of the company.

In 2003, a replica of the Jeanie Johnston made its maiden voyage from Tralee to Canada.
