This week called our friend, Dr. Marcy Caldwell, to ask her the Question of the Day: How many adults, specifically women, are going undiagnosed with ADHD? As always, Dr. Caldwell had some great insight for us on what it’s like for an adult to have ADHD and why it can be so difficult to diagnose especially in adult women.We also learned that the expectations of modern life can overtax any neurotypical brain, which looks like an ADHD brain under stress. Does this mean we all have ADHD? Later on, we talk about how I love the idea of living out of an RV. (Notice I said, the “idea” of an RV.) But I don’t think we could actually pull it off. For one thing, Penn is a pretty big person that needs a lot of space. When it comes to our marriage, I would definitely say I’m the big dreamer. I adore a 5-year plan and especially a color-coordinated vision board. As many of you know, we talk openly around here about mental health and the specific challenges we deal with in our own lives. Our podcast is our favorite thing we do. It’s like a built in day-date every week where we get to sit down and chat together for an hour. I feel very fortunate to have had our careers and health for the past two years, but I have been in an emotional slump. I'm fighting mine by amping up my extrovert time (shocker I know) but I am determined to push past this slump. Penn has been in a recent slump with his tennis hobby. My birthday was this past weekend, and it got me thinking about goal setting and aging. Usually, I am a very goal oriented person. However, with the world so out of sorts in the past two years, I haven’t really spent time thinking about achieving new things. Even though I'm in my mid-40’s, I still feel young. I also see many people in our lives getting older and I know I'm not (that) far behind. While we are “getting back to normal” content in most ways, we will still want to spend some time and introduce you to some of the people we met along the way on our Amazing Race Journey. It’s strange to think about it now, but Cayla Platt and Raquel Moore were the very first people we met on the Race. We didn’t know it then, but almost two years after we met in that airport, we’d be going head to head in a battle to the very end. If you’ve been following us here for a while, you know that we both openly talk about our mental health challenges. For Kim, it's anxiety and depression. For Penn, it's ADHD. We did it. We survived another leg of The Amazing Race. When we left for The Amazing Race, the biggest source of anxiety I had was the fact that we could not bring our phones with us. But not having screens ended up being our favorite part of the race experience. Once we got back home, we had a lot of catching up to do and found ourselves going in the other direction. Coming into The Amazing Race, I had made the decision I would do the “falling off of things” challenges. I would hate it. I would have tears in my eyes, but I would do it. It’s easy to say, of course, but when faced with having to bungee jump… I panicked. While I jumped, Penn panicked. Someone recently asked us, “What advice would you give to a newlywed couple?” and we realized... we had a lot to say. We’ve been married long enough that we have to do math in our heads to remember how long it’s been (it’s been 16 ¾ years). Penn and I both agreed that being on The Amazing Race was a bucket list item for us. It was a fun dream because in our minds there was a ZERO percent chance it would ever happen. Until it did. We’ve had to keep a secret for almost TWO YEARS that we were competing on The Amazing Race in Season 33. We left in February 2020 and we were in Europe as the world was shutting down. Earlier this year, we left again to finish the competition and we learned a lot about ourselves. Anxiety and ADHD make quite a pair when you’re trying to win a $1 million prize. Marriage isn’t always 50/50. In fact, in our marriage, there are times one partner is pulling the entire load. The last few weeks have been tough for our family. On top of the “normal” family struggles that bubble up in every house, my grandmother’s health took a sharp decline. When you're in a fight, using the phrase “I’m Sorry” flippantly is really more about making yourself feel better than your partner. We used to use "I'm Sorry" as a "please-don't-be-mad-at-me-let's-just-let-this-go" Band-Aid, and it did us a lot more harm than good.
