I want my kids to be happy. (I know, I know, I know. It’s an impossible and unrealistic goal.) I’ve been in enough therapy sessions to know that chasing “happiness” is a fool's errand. We should really be appreciating all the moments we have on this planet. Being “happy” is a fleeting emotion. So when you get to see your child experience joy, true unbridled joy, you want to bottle the feeling and carry it in your heart forever. Last week, we had the chance to see Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in New Jersey and I got to witness what every mother wants. My goal this year is to put myself in as many uncomfortable situations as possible. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. On The Amazing Race, we were put in MANY uncomfortable positions. I found that it was easier for me to tackle bigger-picture things (like bungee jumping) than the everyday things. Something as simple as making a take-out order makes my pits sweat (and in a recent social media post, we found out many of you feel the same about phone calls to strangers!)Penn and I wanted to know why phone calls are making people anxious, so we asked Dr. Selena Snow. Every time I learn about another mass shooting in this country, I lose at least a day. Though a school shooting in my community is my worst fear—it is happening at outlet malls like in Allen, Texas and at banks like in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s happening at grocery stores, music festivals, movie theaters, and birthday parties. Mass shootings have changed the way we live our lives. You guys. It happened. I blinked and my tiny colicky-baby got her license. I keep repeating to myself, “She’s a good driver. She’s ready for this. She’s a good driver.” But still, I think one of the hardest parts of parenting is celebrating the well-earned independence of our growing children, while trying not to openly grieve the stage we’re leaving. I needed to call a friend to help with this transition. And it just so happens that I have a friend who is a parenting coach who always knows the right thing to say. Dr. Hope Seidel has been a pediatrician for more than 20 years. About ten years into her career, she began to notice she was healing parents more than children. When Kim asked who I’d like to have on the podcast as a guest, I blurted out “Andy Weir!” Weir writes science fiction and is, hands down, my favorite author. And by some miracle, he agreed to come on our podcast to talk to me. I’ve always said after I had kids that items may have “shifted in flight.” As I’ve gotten older, I’m not doing many things different in terms of my diet or exercise, but I’ve noticed the scale wants to creep up. It made me say (for lack of a better phrase) WTF is up with that? We decided to chat with Dr. Mary Claire Haver on our podcast, and ask her that very scientific question… WTF. I have a really hard time ever calling something a failure. For me, even if something doesn’t go as well as I had hoped, I always learn and grow from the situation, which, I think, is a good thing! I am fully aware that I am susceptible to seasonal depression disorder this time of year, and, when life feels like a LOT, I like to look for actionable items to shift my perspective. One way I do this is to look for inspirational people who are spreading positivity and hope. In Carlos’ new book, How To Human, he talks extensively about how to embrace being fully human, and not just with ourselves, but in relationship with other humans. One thing that really stuck out to me from our discussion is the analogy of 1 degree. Carlos describes a ship that is set only 1 degree off course, but over time, this seemingly small change can lead the ship off course by MILES. He says it’s the same way with people these days. While we typically only hear the dreadful things about menopause, I’m happy to report that there are actually silver linings to this stage of life. The past few years have been rough for all of us, especially teachers. As we approach a new year of school, we want to learn more how to support both our kids and teachers, especially those in a neurodivergent situation. We called our friend, Child and Family Psychologist, Dr. Emily King, to ask her advice on the subject. Now that there is much more awareness and research about neurodivergent learning, there are ways the education system can be improved to meet the needs of all learning styles. If you met Penn's Dad, you’d know where Penn gets his personality from. He was an absolute legend. He lit up every room he walked into, dedicated his life to his community, and founded local charities to help those in need. Haywood Holderness passed away earlier this month. There’s been a lot of ‘laughter through tears’ at our house remembering him. About 10 years ago, he wrote out specific instructions about everything he wanted when he passed. In the months leading up to the birth of Lola, Penn was really nervous about becoming a Dad. We didn’t have practice with other kids. We never even had a dog. So we decided to get a fish, as if that would somehow help us prepare to become parents. Needless to say, that fish died within 2 weeks.
