The Six Best TV Moms of the Millennial Generation
In honor of Mother’s Day, we thought it would be fun to highlight the most influential mother figures throughout our millennial television-viewing lives. We present to you our favorite six TV moms of the 1980s to present day, each of whom we admire for different qualities and attributes.Roseanne - Roseanne TV sit-com (1988-1997)For always keeping it real and calling everyone on their bullsh*t. She fought for her family fiercely, and ensured they would develop humorous personalities. She loved Halloween and nailed her husband with a prank every year. She mothered her younger sister whether it was wanted or not. Somehow, she always found a way to make light of a serious situation and that was as comforting as the hugs she gave.Jill Taylor - Home Improvement TV sit-com (1991-1999)For consistently pointing out the idiocy and dangers of an overly confident man wearing a tool belt. She also made the mom cut cute and accepted as… fate. Somehow, she maintained her cool while Tim worked out his deeply personal relationship issues on live television. She also allowed her personal life to be broadcast to the world well before social media made it a possibility.Harriette Winslow - Family Matters TV sitcom (1989-1998)For going on strike and holding strong when she had had enough of managing and caring for the entire household. She treated Steve Urkel with decency when he came over to terrorize her and her family, at the same time displaying guidance with clear communication. This woman taught boundaries with ourselves, and with other people. She gracefully accepted “Mother Winslow” (Carl’s mom) living with them. Wait, we take back the boundaries comment.Rosita - Mommy Pig in SING (2016) and SING II (2021)She exuded positivity and hope. She consistently encouraged her teammates and jumped on the opportunity to experience her own adventure away from her 20+ piglets, leaving her husband to manage the madness but not before inventing a machine overnight that would make it easy for all of them. She reminds us that mothers have their own dreams and aspirations and it is okay to reach for them.Charlotte York - Sex in the City Series (1998-2004), Movies (2008, 2010) and And Just Like That series (2021-?)She never gave up on the dream of motherhood. She refused to be stopped by fertility issues and found herself a partner who was supportive after the first one was…not. She was the number one cheerleader for all the people in her life. She always kept it classy and stylish.Moira Rose - Schitt’s Creek Sit-Com (2015-2020)Easily a favorite character for her theatrics and phrase turns. She solidified wearing the wig and designer clothing to the small town diner as an achievable reality. She demonstrated her artistic genius by salvaging The Crows Have Eyes III. Perhaps an accidental mother, she grew over time from not knowing her own daughter’s middle name to forming deep bonds with both children. She gradually set aside her narcissism in favor of true love and connection with her family. Who cares if that’s not really possible- it left us with all the warm fuzzies with simultaneous cheek pain from laughing.Clearly, these women have inspired us both in unique ways through their individual characters. We want to know, who touched your heart as a mother, and why? You know the drill, let us know in the caaaawments!❤️ If you enjoyed this post, please click the like button at the bottom - it helps others discover our stuff!🗣️ Maybe leave us a cawwwwment below!☕️ Buy us a coffee. Don't Bust One On It
Don't Bust One On It‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations! We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.🤓 Awkward? Yes.😬 Cringy? Mmmhmm.🤩 Fun? The most. Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo:1:14 — Life updates and stories (Kara talks about her plants; Bethany discusses her family’s failed attempts to play board games and pivot to “cooperative games” — the one they bought is called Castle Panic) 6:50 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances) (“The gurus say . . . stocks are on sale right now, keep buying.”)10:00 — The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. This week, it goes to American gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, who literally bowed down to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade for winning gold on her individual floor routine. 11:50 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” (“Don’t bust one on it.”) (“She is as naive as a first-day fawn.”) (“She got hemmed up.”) (The book Bethany refers to: All the President’s Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward)17:09 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments! (“This is totally for sport.”) (“I would initiate emergency response.”)23:00 — We discuss the Snoop Dog / Olympics crossover (“He’s one of those people that shows up in your life, unannounced, at random times.”)25:26 — We talk about the youngest and oldest olympians competing in the 2024 games, thanks to VARSITY READER on Substack for this content.28:16 — Check out The Thread by Phil Mullins for some great satire! We both enjoyed his thoughts on the process of buying a pretzel at a theme park.29:08 — “Taste of Kara”— a few things Kara’s into at the moment.Check out Pink Cottage Studio on Etsy for beautiful original watercolors of homes.Kara accidentally read a romantic comedy (that she likes to call “smut”). To each is own, but she wasn’t a fan of Funny Story by Emily Henry. (Kara now knows that if something is described as “spicy,” it is actually smut. Time.com tells you to embrace your love for romance novels.)The Disneyland basement makes us both uncomfortable.Check out Madison Humphrey on Instagram for great satire 39:50— We both continue down the Gilded Age rabbit hole. Bethany is now devouring the audiobook of Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe and simultaneously reading Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty also by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. Kara is reading A Well Behaved Woman: A Novel of the Vanderbilts by Therese Anne Fowler 45:05 — We preview next week’s piece for Knock it OffIf you missed our previous convos, here are links to catch up:* 🍫 Jingles and Milky Ways* 💻 I’m Running Mojave* 🎉 Hey All You Knockers . . .* ⏰ Better Late Than Never* ‼️Once in a Lifetime Opportunity* 😳 Taking it in the Shorts! Thanks for listening to KNOCK IT OFF! (Bethany: “I’m in my Watergate era.”)10:25 — Katharine Graham deserves the “Pedigree of Paula” moment this month11:15 — We eat crow about our last Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce predictions14:55 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” (“I ate my hat.”)17:15 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! (“And now we have a smashed duck.” “That ducky wasn’t so lucky.”) Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments!21:16 — “Taste of Kara”— a few things Kara’s into at the moment. Kara finished The Last Castle: The Epic Story of Love, Loss, and American Royalty in the Nation's Largest Home by Denise Kiernan. Kara provides three lesser-known tidbits that stood out.We also discuss Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Ann Fowler - we both give this one high praise despite our strong preference for non-fiction!32:40— Kara breezed through the audiobook of Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. This one was recommended by our Substack pal Jen who writes Recently Enjoyed Things. You can find her take on Astor in her May 24 edition. Jen is hilarious and always has A+ recommendations. Consider subscribing!37:50— NYT piece Conan O’Brien Doesn’t Matter* by Jason Zinoman, featuring the Hot Ones appearance that caused Conan to go viral more so than the late night appearance in the same week!43:15 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances) (“The gurus tell me if I keep doing this, I’m going to be rich.”)45:48 — Kara fixed her Nespresso machine using a Youtube life hack video! Taking it in the Shorts
Happy Father’s Day! ‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation!Awkward? Yes.Cringy? Mmmhmm.Fun? The most.We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive. If you missed the first time we did this, here’s the link to catch up!We have a great time with it, and we hope you enjoy. (If you typically read—rather than listen to—our stuff, you can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.)Here are a few highlights of this week’s convo:1:19 — Talk about summer in Florida and Bethany’s pre-run donut disaster (“I might hit the floor.”)3:02 — Our review of The Idea of You the movie (Shoutout to our pal, who also discussed it in her Substack ) (“It just plain blew.”)8:00 — Kara talks about her recent read, The Last Castle by Denise Kiernan and her trip to the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina. Here are the promised pics.10:52 — Kara is deeply concerned about the future of Jack in the Box. Do you share this concern? Visit heyjackbox.com and tell them yourself!16:35 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances)21:29 — We turn a phrase like Truman Capote (“It’s like taking it in the shorts.”) (“Do you know what it means to be catfished?”)24:45 — We discuss Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship (Bethany refers to The Birth Order Book by Dr. Kevin Leman)29:20 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments! (“You should get out if you can.”)33:34 — “Taste of Kara” — see previous Biltmore and Jack in the Box discussions (Also, Bethany checked out last week’s taste, Bone Valley, and loved!)34:32 — A preview of next week’s piece about Kara becoming a plant lady (“It’s gunna be riveting.”)Thanks for listening to KNOCK IT OFF!
