In episode 95 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Emily about her two pregnancy and birth stories. Emily first talks us through her unexplained infertility journey, falling pregnant spontaneously after 1.5 years, Emily is also a Midwife so it is interesting hearing about this from her perspective. Emily gave birth at 36 weeks to Harry, she had planned a homebirth but as she went into labour early she delivered in the hospital and had a drug free birth in the bathroom. Emily goes on to explain her breastfeeding struggles and adjusting to life as a Mum.Emily then talks us through her second pregnancy, at the 12 week scan there were clear abnormalities and eventually determined that Trisomy 18 was the cause. Emily and her family made the decision to have a medical termination and she talks us through this experience, including giving birth to Oliver and how they celebrated his life. Emily is honest and open sharing her experiences with us all and I am so grateful she did - the stigma that exists around her choice was another reason why she wanted to share as she knows she may be able to help someone in a similar situation. Sharyn takes us through the devastation of recurrent miscarriages, eventually finding out that she had a septum in her uterus causing issues that were resulting in miscarriage. Once that was removed they fell pregnant with Tyson and due to Placenta Previa had a planned C Section at 38 weeks. The C Section ended up being under General Anaesthetic and Sharyn takes us through what that experience was like, mourning for the loss of that moment she should have had with Bryce when meeting Tyson and their journey in hospital. In episode 74 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Deanna about her 2 birth stories. Deanna takes us through falling pregnant at 17, being diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 34 weeks and an eventual delivery with ventouse after a long labour. Hunter her son was diagnosed with sepsis 3 days after he was born and spent 10 days in intensive care before being released and Deanna talks through how that experience impacted her anxiety and confidence. Deanna unfortunately suffered 2 miscarriages after the birth of Hunter which took a serious toll on her mental health and while awaiting results for unexplained miscarriages fell pregnant with daughter Lily without help. Deanna suffered from serious anxiety through out her pregnancy and talks through getting help for that as well as how she coped with Gestational Diabetes and other conditions through out the pregnancy. Deanna went into labour at 34 and 4 and Lily was born not long after following an induction for inflammation markers. Lily was taken to the NICU as she was premature and made great steps forward eventually able to go home. Deanna suffered from Postnatal Depression after this pregnancy and talks through getting help for that. Mel takes us through two miscarriages before falling pregnant with Mia, anxiety that this caused and the decision to hire a birth doula to help ease some anxiety. Mel was diagnosed with polyhydramnios during her pregnancy which subsequently decreased by the time she was full term. Mel talks us through finding out the country was in lockdown the day she went into labour, what precautions were taken at the hospital, her birth story in which Mia was posterior and required a forcep delivery and what happened during her after care in the hospital as a result of the lockdown. Mel then talks through their re-admission to hospital after going home, having Nurses and Doctors wearing PPE gear and their standard of care, as well as what it has been like in their bubble since Mia was born. This all changed when Cats midwife gave her some information about birth support in the COVID-19 pandemic and she decided to birth at home (something they had discussed previously but not decided on). In episode 62 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Kaille who shares her two birth stories. Her first was with daughter Tilly, Kaille discusses her Antenatal Anxiety, switching from a Midwifery Team to private Obstetrician, Braxton Hicks, Meconium in her waters and a fast labour ending with birth in Hospital where Tilly struggled to breathe for a few minutes due to the meconium but was fine not long afterwards. Kaille takes us through her breastfeeding journey where she was told she has flat nipples and fed with a shield for 9 weeks, the weaning Tilly off. Tilly lost 11% of her birth weight in the first week and Kaille explains what they were doing to ensure she was gaining weight after that. Kaille then takes us through her second pregnancy in which she didn't have any anxiety, and opted for a Homebirth. In Episode 60 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Bryony about the births of her 2 sons Ari and Archie. Bryony takes us through her first pregnancy experience where she suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, expecting to go to full term Bryony moved from Dunedin to the North Island for an internship but when on a break in Taupo ended up going into labour at 31+3, they were transferred to Wellington Hospital where they remained until Ari was born. Bryony discusses her birth experience and post natal care period. Bryony and her partner lost a baby at 11 weeks following the birth of Ari, which had a serious impact on her partner and she takes us through how they dealt with that as a couple. They then fell pregnant again with Archie, Bryony experienced severe Hyperemesis again with his pregnancy and was at risk of another premature birth - she ended up going into labour at 25 weeks and Archie was born. She takes us through this experience with a significantly younger baby in the NICU, the complications this had and how they are doing now. In Episode 59 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Renee Ball about the birth of her two children - Honor and Hunter. Renee takes us through her journey to first pregnancy which was longer than they anticipated, at a young age. When they did fall pregnant Renee ended up giving birth to Honor at over 10lbs resulting in a 3C tear in which the doctor told her she would need a CSection if she was to have another baby. Renee and her Husband knew they wanted to have another baby and because their first journey had been a long one they decided to start trying again within a year of having Honor however after years of not falling pregnant they went down the path of IVF. Renee fell pregnant naturally with Hunter before starting their IVF treatment and was monitored for another large baby. Renee ended up being induced as they were concerned for babies size if he went to full term and Renee takes us through her induction experience, the journey as a mum of two and how she is adapting. In episode 58 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Jade Weston about her two births of Frankie and Boston. Jade had a cyst on her ovaries before falling pregnant which meant she didn't have regular periods, Jade found out she was pregnant with Frankie and had a great pregnancy experience under Midwifery care. Jade ended up going 16 days overdue and was induced, she gave birth to a very healthy Frankie who was 10.1lbs via episiotomy and forcep delivery. Jade takes us through adjusting to life as a new young Mum, her experience with post natal anxiety at around 3 months and how she found her support system through social media. Jade then discusses her second pregnancy in which she decided to go through the care of an Obstetrician, with a planned induction at 38 weeks Jade gave birth to Boston who needed to spend a short time in the NICU due to his fast decent through the birth canal. Jade then talks about her experience with 2 young children, becoming a single Mum and all the things she has done to feel supported through out that time. In episode 57 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Katie Hawkey about the birth of her daughter Coco. Katie takes us through their journey getting pregnant, her extreme Hyperemesis Gravidarum which was paired with antenatal anxiety (and mainly linked to this). Katie was living in London and takes us through the healthcare model there, as well as antenatal mental health appointments to assist with anxiety. Katie returned to NZ at the end of her pregnancy and discusses this experience, as well as having Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy and needing to be induced as a result. Katie was induced twice as the first time didn't work, she takes us through the induction process and her labour / birth where she needed an episiotomy and later on had surgery to remove scar tissue. Katie then discusses their difficult start to breastfeeding, persisting with it and now still feeding 1 year on.
