KCLR News speaks to fuel blockade protestors on the M9 (9th April 2026)
Today is the third day of national fuel protests, with motorways, ports, depots and refineries now the focus of the campaign. Around 150 vehicles travelled in a slow moving convoy along the M9 early this morning before stopping at Junction 9 at Danesfort, blocking the northbound lanes while the northbound slip was also blocked. The blockade was lifted shortly before 5pm this (Thursday) evening. These protestors, including Hugginstown-based Paschal O'Shea, told KCLR's Dermot Keyes why they were taking part in the blockade.

The Annual Congress of the Teachers Union of Ireland got underway at Kilkenny's Lyrath House Hotel this morning, with over 500 delegates expected to attend the three-day event. The union, which represents 22,000 teachers and lecturers in post-primary, higher and further education, will discuss the challenges and concerns facing members, including the offering of full hours contracts to new entrants, a 1% pay increase Senior Cycle teachers are still waiting to receive and what measures can be delivered to make the profession more attractive and sustainable. Before the congress got formally underway, KCLR's Dermot Keyes spoke to Carlow-based Liz Farrell, who is the TUI's Assistant Secretary General.
