EP # 039 | Christian Socialism
On June 26, 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an avowed Democratic Socialist and active member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated incumbent Democrat Joe Crawley in New York City’s 14th District Congressional election. Since then, Ocasio-Cortez has become the new face of socialism in America, attracting support from all walks of life, particularly from Millennials. In this episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Virgil (Omaha) dig deeper into what socialism is (and isn’t), its various types and, more importantly, how the message being propagated by people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is being embraced by many today within the evangelical church. Key Scripture references for this episode: Ex. 25:2; Acts 2:42-44; 2 Cor. 9:6-7; Ex. 20:15. EP # 038 | Revoice Conference
On this episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Omaha (Virgil Walker) discuss the 2018 Revoice Conference, held in St. Louis, MO on July 26-28, under the mission of: “Supporting, encouraging, and empowering gay, lesbian, same-sex attracted, and other LGBT Christians so they can flourish while observing the historic, Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality.” Listen as these brothers, lovingly yet firmly, express their own concerns about how Revoice, and evangelical movements like it, are promoting a different gospel than that to which it claims to subscribe. EP # 037 | Call to Pause?
A group of evangelical Christians has come together under the banner ‘Call To Pause’ to argue against the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. Their primary rationale is that Kavanaugh’s appointment would be detrimental to the poor and “disenfranchised” and would foster an ongoing “culture war”. Listen as Darrell and ‘Omaha’ (who is back in the saddle after a two-week hiatus from behind the mic) take an in-depth look at what ‘Call To Pause’ is advocating and why. EP # 036 | Uprooting Anger
Sinful anger is a problem for many people, including Christians, perhaps even you. But what is “sinful” anger? How do we discern sinful anger from righteous anger? How are you and I, as Christians, to deal biblically with our sinful anger? Listen in as Darrell flies solo and takes listeners through the Robert D. Jones book ‘Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help For a Common Problem’ in an effort to help us understand better how to deal with our sinful anger in a gospel-centered way. EP # 035 | Toward a Pure Church
On July 2, 2018, Trinity Church of Portland (Oregon) released a statement announcing the removal of Dr. Art Azurdia from his positions as an elder and Senior Minister of Word and Worship at Trinity Church. This sad news served as the impetus for the Just Thinking podcast addressing the broader issue of sexual immorality within the body of Christ as a whole. Please note that this is an expanded episode of the podcast and that Darrell is flying solo, as his trusty sidekick and wingman ‘Omaha’ (Virgil Walker) is away attending to other priorities over the next couple of weeks. EP # 033 | Immigration and the Gospel
Immigration. It’s today’s “issue du jour” both in the world and in the church. Constant media reports of children being forcibly separated from their families at the border between the United States and Mexico have people around the world, including many Christians, angry and upset about America’s immigration policy. But is it possible to set aside emotions and consider what the Scriptures objectively say about this issue? Listen as Darrell and Virgil attempt to find out what, if anything, the gospel has to say about this issue. EP # 032 | False Teachers
Since the earliest days of Christianity, false doctrine has been a threat to the gospel of Christ and to His church. This is no less true today as false teachers, from within and without the church, continue to mislead countless souls by deliberately misinterpreting and misconstruing the Scriptures in accordance with their own sinful agendas. How are we, as Christians, to respond to false teachers and the false doctrines they espouse? How can followers of Christ know for certain what is true and what is false? EP # 031 | Suicide and the Gospel
Recently, celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, two people who seemingly had it all: wealth, notoriety, and popularity, committed suicide. When a person commits suicide, particularly someone who is well known, invariably the question is asked: Why? Notwithstanding the specific reasons why either Spade or Bourdain would decide to take their life, the gospel has an answer to that question. EP # 030 | Abortion
On May 25, 2018, citizens of the Republic of Ireland, in an effort to achieve a “modern Constitution for a modern country”, according to its Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, voted to repeal the 8th Amendment to its Constitution which, since 1983, had outlawed abortion except in cases where the life of the mother is at risk. When the results of the referendum were announced, supporters of the repeal literally celebrated the outcome. Many would say abortion is a solely “women’s issue”. Needless to say, Darrell and Virgil adamantly disagree. Listen as these brothers apply the gospel to this issue and discuss why Ireland legalizing the murder of God’s unborn image bearers makes it a nation more analogous to Old Testament Israel than a “modern” country. EP # 029 | Barna Study on Evangelism
The Barna Group recently published a follow-up to a study originally conducted in 1993 about how Christians view their personal responsibility in evangelism and sharing the gospel with others, and the results are disheartening, to say the least. So disheartening, in fact, that Darrell and Virgil considered the study results worth addressing on an episode of the Just Thinking podcast. EP # 028 | The Fallacy of “Gun Control”
On May 18, 2018, 17-year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a former student at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, allegedly used a firearm to murder 10 of his classmates and injure 10 others. Predictably, calls from special-interest groups, politicians, and others for tighter “gun control” laws immediately sprang up on social media and in the mainstream media. But are guns actually the problem? Conversely, are more laws the solution? In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil tackle these questions through the lens of the gospel and discuss why the real problem dates back to long before guns were ever invented. EP # 027 | Majoring in the Minors
In this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil give listeners to the podcast two for one. First, the brothers take a look-see at what the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is doing to promote social justice within its organization, including achieving what its president, Steve Gaines, refers to as a “maximum percentage” of ethnic diversity on the various committees within the group. And if that wasn’t enough SJWism for you, the brothers discuss a move by the University of Connecticut – UConn – to start offering a minor in Social Justice beginning in the fall of 2018. EP # 026 | Ideological Tribalism
Why would a 7-word tweet by Kanye West, a black man, be so upsetting to so many black people? And why do black people make other black people pay a price for thinking outside of what is considered to be culturally normative? To answer these questions, Darrell and Virgil take you back to Genesis 1 and discuss, with a little help from Friedrich Nietzsche (of all people), how the ability to use one’s mind and think for one’s self is an evidence of what it means that we are individually and uniquely created in the “image of God”. EP # 025 | Artificial Diversity
Much is being made today of local church congregations becoming more ethnically diverse, and that ‘white supremacy’ is primarily the reason why “white churches” aren’t more ethnically diverse than they are. But Christ promised that His kingdom would be composed of believers from “every tribe, tongue, and nation”, so what’s really driving this effort to movement to make white congregations less white? Listen as Darrell and Virgil exposit the Scriptures and explain why this is similar to what Booker T. Washington once referred to as “artificial forcing”. EP # 023 | Sin by Proxy
In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil address a concerning development among Christian social justice advocates – the adoption of the doctrine of “sin by proxy.” Sin by Proxy is a term Darrell coined (listen to episode 23) to define the theology of social justice Christians who blame current generations of white people for sins their ancestors may or may not have committed against black people in America in previous decades and centuries, and are demanding they repent and atone for those sins today. Listen in as Darrell and Virgil apply the Word of God, starting in the book of Genesis, to this unbiblical idea of Sin by Proxy. EP # 022 | MLK 50 Conference
The MLK50 Conference held on April 3-4, 2018 by the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) has been controversial, to say the least. Some Christians saw the conference as unifying and necessary, whereas others saw it as divisive and unproductive. The MLK50 Conference is a topic that Darrell and Virgil intended to not discuss on the Just Thinking podcast but were urged to by many who reached out to them on social media after having heard some of the messages that were emanating from that event. Having live-streamed portions of the conference themselves, Darrell and Virgil use this episode as an opportunity to convey their own thoughts on how, in their opinion, the conference misses the mark of the gospel. EP # 020 | “There’s No Scientific Basis for Race” (Part 2)
In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil conclude their discussion of the National Geographic article ‘There’s No Scientific Basis for Race – It’s a Made-Up Label’ and argue why the church needs to wholeheartedly reject the socio-cultural and “scientific” lies to which it has been so susceptible to believe in recent decades, lies that have served only to divide, not unify, the body of Christ along class and ethnic lines. EP # 019 | “There’s No Scientific Basis for Race” (Part 1)
It is a sad state of affairs when a secular publication conveys a universal truth that many Christians have, and continue to, refuse to accept. Namely, that ‘race’ is a myth. In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil discuss at length, with a little help from that renown theologian Frederick Douglass, a National Geographic article that leverages objective scientific evidence to completely obliterate – perhaps to the consternation of many so-called ‘race workers’ and ‘social justice warriors’ – the false idea of ‘race’. Listen in as Darrell and Virgil deal with this undeniable reality through the lens of the gospel of Christ. EP # 018 | A Quiet Exodus or a Misguided Expectation
In this current milieu of social justice and racial reconciliation, the evangelical church in America is expected to be all things to all people. This is particularly the case regarding the expectation of churches composed of primarily of white congregants to pursue ethnic congregational diversity solely for the sake of ethnic diversity. But is that truly the church’s mission? In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil discuss the reported “quiet exodus” of black Christians from white evangelical churches; and why such departures are often the result of misguided – and unbiblical – expectations of the church. EP # 017 | The Pantherization of Black Christians
The recently-released film Black Panther is proving to be a box-office blockbuster, having earned over $700M worldwide to-date. But is that news as positive for the church? In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil discuss, perhaps to the consternation of some, how the phenomenon that is the Black Panther movie is influencing many Christians, especially black Christians, in forming a theology of identity that is rooted primarily in ethnicity and ancestry rather than in Christ. EP # 016 | How to Be a Better White Person
The current socio-cultural milieu is such that ‘race’ is increasingly becoming a factor and variable in almost every aspect of our existence as human beings. ‘Racial reconciliation’ is now the cause du jour among many individual Christians and churches, so much so that opinions are rampant as to the best approach to bring black people and white people together. In this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil discuss a unique approach white people, in particular, can take to bring such ‘racial harmony’ to fruition. EP # 015 | A Biblical Theology of Soul Food
In this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil address what many people might consider one of the most obscure topics in the history of Christian podcasting. Namely, the relationship between the gospel and ‘soul food’. No, we’re not kidding. Listen as these two brothers carefully examine the Old and New Testament in an effort to exposit the theological connections to a socio-cultural tradition which, as Darrell and Virgil recently found out, is something many people are extremely passionate about. EP # 014 | Is the gospel still powerful today?
In Romans 1:16, the apostle Paul describes the gospel as “the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.” But is that same gospel still powerful today? In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil discuss the story of Joe Bednarsky Jr., a former high-ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), and how the supernatural power of the gospel of Christ transformed his heart of stone, one that was filled to the depths with violence and hatred toward black people, into “a heart of flesh” (Eze. 36:26-27). Is the gospel still powerful today? Take a listen and find out. EP # 013 | Cultural Marxism and Public Education
What do Karl Marx and learning your ABCs have in common? You might be surprised. In this episode of ‘Just Thinking’, Darrell and Virgil discuss the growing influence of cultural Marxism in public education or, perhaps more accurately, public indoctrination, by looking at what’s transpiring in one school district in Edina, Minnesota, where students were required to participate in such “racially conscious” assignments the ‘Melanin Project’ and where “racial equity” is seemingly more important than academics. What, if anything, does the gospel have to say about this? Take a listen and find out. EP # 012 | “Born of the Spirit”
Many Christians, and non-Christians alike, are confused about what the gospel actually is and what it means to be ‘born-again’. Is everyone a “child of God” merely by virtue of being born physically? The new birth is an eternally important subject about which no one can afford to be wrong. In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and Virgil leverage a message by the late Dr. R.C. Sproul, founder of Ligonier Ministries, entitled ‘Born of the Spirit’, to discuss this topic and help listeners to better understand what salvation in Christ is – and what it isn’t. EP # 011 | A Desire for Justice
This episode of the Just Thinking podcast marks a ‘dirty dozen’ shows that Darrell and Virgil have recorded. In this episode, D and V take listeners on an expository journey through the Old and New Testament as it relates to the topic of “social justice”, and discuss in great detail how our desire for justice, as society, is inextricably rooted in the imago Dei and, conversely, how the heart-transforming gospel of Jesus Christ is both antecedent and fundamental to any social change that is to occur. EP # 010 | MLK Jr. and the deity of Jesus Christ
In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, which was recorded on the observance of the birth of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Darrell and Virgil, at the risk of incurring the wrath of many who admire Dr. King, delve into the theology of the man and his views concerning the deity of Jesus Christ, and how fundamentally crucial it is that professing Christians have a proper Christology of Jesus. EP # 008 | Why We Need Police
We are all familiar with the adage, “What goes around, comes around.” That seems to be the case in Baltimore, where many black residents and social activists who, subsequent to the death of Freddie Gray in 2015, were demanding the removal of police from their communities, are now pleading for the return of police to those same neighborhoods in response the skyrocketing murder rate in that city. On this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil discuss this topic through the lens of the gospel, including the fundamental question of why we need police in the first place. Also, Virgil lamens the loss of his beloved Oklahoma Sooners to Darrell’s Georgia Bulldogs in the Rose Bowl and the fact that his Sooners will have to wait another year to contend for a national championship. EP # 007 | Black and Pro-Life
Is the term ‘pro-life black person’ an oxymoron? A mirage? A thing of the past? In this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil discuss the growing black pro-life movement, a concept which, given how infrequently the terms “black” and “pro-life” are used together, would have many believe it is a contradiction in terms. Additionally, D and V take some time to pay their respects to the late Dr. R.C. Sproul, founder of Ligonier Ministries, who passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017, who had an immense spiritual impact on both their lives. JUST THINKING PODCAST #007
Is a church for ‘black men only’ the solution to the perceived suffrage of black people in America? Is white evangelicalism to blame for the current socio-political climate in our nation? And what about black evangelicalism? On this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell Harrison and Virgil Walker speak candidly but biblically, as usual, about these questions and how the gospel provides us with a Christ-centered response. EP # 006 | “Big Bang” Racism
What does the so-called ‘Big Bang Theory’ in science have to do with racism? And, exactly, what role, if any, is the church to play in making social justice a reality in today’s society? Listen as Darrell and Virgil chop up Darrell’s latest blog article, titled ‘Big Bang’ Racism, while bringing the truth of the gospel to bear on these and other questions in episode 6 of the Just Thinking podcast. EP # 005 | Colin Kaepernick & Civil Rights
Colin Kaepernick continues to be lauded for his stance on social justice, but is he set to follow in the shadows of such noted – and often venerated – civil rights icons as Muhammad Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Conversely, why do black Americans seem to be engaged in a perpetual search for a savior? Darrell and Virgil tackle these and other topics in episode 5 of Just Thinking podcast. EP # 004 | Social Activism and the Black Church
Is the black church still relevant to today’? Or has it betrayed its legacy of social activism? In this episode of Just Thinking, Darrell and Virgil chop up the topic of how a perceived lack of social activism is causing many black millennial Christians to leave the church and how the words of John Calvin can help reorient us to a proper view of justice in today’s society.
