EP # 089 | Superstitious Christianity

Are you a superstitious Christian? Be honest. Do you know someone who is? In fact, what is a “superstitious Christian” anyway? In this final episode of the Just Thinking podcast for 2019, Darrell and “Omaha” (Virgil) discuss a practice that many people who profess to be Christian engage in every day–superstitions–and why such beliefs are antithetical to what it truly means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. EP # 088 | The Grace of God

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approach, the grace of God will be the focus of many pulpits and households around the world. But do we really understand what the grace of God is and means and why it is important that we, as Christians, thank God for His grace? Listen as Darrell and “Omaha” (Virgil) discuss what the Bible teaches doctrinally about the grace of God and why the church needs to recommit itself to take that doctrine more seriously than it does currently. EP # 087 | Politics and the Black Church

As Christians, to what degree should one’s theology shape or influence his or her view of politics? In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and “Omaha” (Virgil) discuss that question in light of a comment made recently on social media by Bishop Paul S. Morton. Morton, a black man, urged black Christians who are considering supporting Democrat candidate Pete Buttigieg a biological male who is “married” to a biological male, for president in 2020, to stand on the biblical definition of marriage, and why Morton paid a price for making such a comment. EP # 086 | Playing God

An almost unfathomable situation is currently unfolding in Texas where Dr. Anne Georgulas, the mother of 7-year old James Younger, a biological male, is engaged in a legal battle with the boy’s father, Jeffrey Younger, over whether Georgulas has the right to subject James to “transition” James to a girl against the wishes of his father. The potential ramifications of this case, regardless of the outcome, are not only legal or sociological but theological. Listen as Darrell and Virgil (Omaha) discuss this situation through the lens of the objective truth of the Word of God. EP # 084 | When Forgiveness Isn’t Woke Enough

Amber Guyer, a 31-year old white female and former Dallas, Texas police officer, was recently convicted of murder in the shooting death of 26-year old Botham Jean, a black man. Guyer was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison. During the penalty phase of Guyer’s trial, Botham Jean’s younger brother, Brandt, shocked the courtroom–and the world–by verbally forgiving Guyer and hugging her (to the tears of many in the courtroom.) But for many people, including some who profess to be Christian, Brandt Jean’s offer of forgiveness was not a gesture to be lauded or applauded. Listen as Darrell and Omaha (Virgil Walker) discuss some of the reasons why Jean’s offer of forgiveness wasn’t “woke” enough for some professing Christians. EP # 083 | Black Athletes and White Colleges

Is it time for Black Athletes to Leave White Colleges? According to American Sports Journalist Jemele Hill, the answer to this question is, “YES!” However, this seems to be another form of tribalist separation that has nothing to do with the best interest of the Black Athlete. Hill has written on the subject and makes her case. However, in this episode, Virgil “Omaha” examines that Hill’s case to determine if there’s any merit to her argument. EP # 082 | A Socialist Savior

EP # 081 | Black Nationalism, White Fatherlessness

In this episode Virgil “Omaha” Walker discusses one of the biggest threats to the so-called “black community” and it is not “White Nationalism.” Virgil walks through the idea that the internal threat impacting the “black community” is Black Nationalism packaged with all kinds of immoral behavior, seemingly ignored, often overlooked, and at times rewarded on the basis of historic racism in America. EP # 080 | Guns and Gardens

More than thirty souls have entered into eternity as a result of two mass shootings that occurred recently in the cities of El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. As usual, when such events happen, people react by asking questions and pointing fingers. But how are followers of Christ to respond when incidents like mass shootings happen? Who really is to blame? EP # 079 | One Church, One Body

Unity within the body of Christ continues to be a much-discussed topic among evangelicals today. But as much as it has been talked about in recent years evangelicals, especially in America, continue to be divided, particularly along ethnic lines. In this episode of the Just Thinking podcast, Darrell and “Omaha” (Virgil Walker) argue that such divisions should not exist among believers, as we are all one in Christ. EP # 078 | Black Lives Matter and Abortion

A recent New York Times article is promoting the decades-long narrative that high abortion rates among black women are the direct result of socio-economic conditions that give those women no choice but to abort their unborn children. It is a narrative that is wholeheartedly embraced by many black Christian leaders today as a matter of “social justice.” But is that narrative biblical? Listen as Darrell and Omaha (Virgil) look to the Scriptures to understand how believers are to respond when Black Lives Matter is invoked in the abortion debate. EP # 077 | A Nuanced Gospel?

But what does the word “nuance” mean and how does that meaning influence and impact us as evangelicals in terms of how we are to understand and interpret the Word of God? EP # 074 | An Unnecessary Debate

A debate is brewing, among Christians of various denominational persuasions, on the question of whether women should be ordained as pastors and elders in the church. It is a debate that is dividing family members, friends, and churches. But should there even be a debate at all? Listen as Darrell and Virgil make the case that this debate is an entirely unnecessary one, as Scripture has clearly spoken on the issue.   The Equality Act of 2019 is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation to be introduced in Congress in our lifetime. It is dangerous because it will force Christians, under threat of law, to be accommodating of subjective choices regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. And yet many Americans, as well as many Christians, seem to not care. EP # 068 | Singles, Dating and Marriage

For countless Christians who are single, being single is more of a dilemma than a calling. EP # 066 | The Resurrection of Jesus

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is unarguably the most central pillar in terms of Christian orthodoxy. For centuries, the Church has had to defend this doctrine against numerous heretical attacks that have come against it. And yet, today, many professing believers fail to grasp the temporal and eternal significance of this momentous event in their personal lives. EP # 065 | Capitalism

It’s clear, the battle lines have been drawn from the left and the right. Those on the left believe Socialism is the right path forward. Those on the right disagree holding to the Capitalism that has made the country prosperous. The question that needs to be asked has little to do with one’s political affiliation. Instead we should be asking, “What does the Bible have to say about economics? Has God outlined through the Scriptures the economic path forward for those who believe in Christ?” Listen to this episode as Virgil examines these questions and much more. EP # 064 | Worldliness in the Church

The late Dr. R.C. Sproul, Sr. once said, “My life didn’t get difficult until I became a Christian.” To be a Christian is, by definition, so separate oneself from his or her former life in the world. And yet, that separation doesn’t come easy as to live in this world is a constant struggle to not be of this world. Listen as Darrell and Virgil discuss the issue of worldliness in terms of what it is and what it means for believers to not succumb to it. Key text: 1 John 2:15-17. EP # 063 | Slavery Reparations

As the “social gospel” continues to gain traction within contemporary American evangelicalism, increasing numbers of professing Christians are aligning themselves with the idea that black Americans are owed reparations for slavery. But is such an idea biblical? In this expanded episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Virgil go in-depth to discuss the divisive issue of reparations from both a personal and theological perspective. EP # 062 | A Biblical Theology of Socialism

To say that socialism is gaining in popularity in the United States would an understatement. But to say the same about the Church is both disheartening and concerning. Why are increasing numbers of professing evangelical Christians attracted to a worldview that is so antithetical to biblical orthodoxy? EP # 061 | Born-Alive Act

Recently, the United States Senate failed to pass the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” or what is commonly known as the “Born-Alive Act”. The legislation, was aimed at protecting the lives of babies who were born alive after surviving an attempted abortion. Notwithstanding the role of elected politicians in failing to pass what appears to most people be the common-sense thing to do, what responsibility, if any, do Christians have in this outcome? Listen as Darrell and Virgil make a case from Scripture that Christians are as much to blame as politicians for what happened in the Senate concerning this legislation. EP # 060 | Sexual Sin in the Church

Sexual immorality is one of the most devastating sins confronting the church today, destroying marriages, families, and ministries. And yet, despite this reality, sexual sin–both individually and corporately–remains one of the least-addressed sins from the pulpits of evangelical churches today.   In this week’s episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Virgil a “demand letter” submitted by a young black woman, Mecca Morgan, on behalf of black Americans. “Demand letters” are nothing new. EP # 058 | SBTS Report on Racism & Slavery

Slavery. It’s the sin some evangelical Christians just can’t – or won’t – let go of. In this episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Virgil discuss the ‘Report on Racism & Slavery in the History of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’ recently released by the under the signature of its president Dr. R. Albert Mohler. In the report, Dr. Mohler acknowledges, confesses, and repents of the complicity of SBTS in fostering a culture of racism in America.   A divorced mother in Texas is forcing her 6-year old son to identify as transgender, to the utter dismay and disagreement of the boy’s biological father. The mother has also stated her intention to have the boy chemically castrated when he turns eight. In this extended episode of the Just Thinking broadcast, Darrell and Virgil dig deep into this disheartening situation and discuss the myriad implications and ramifications of this mother’s sinful defiance of God through the biblical lens of the imago Dei. EP # 055 | The Minds of Black Folk

History was almost made recently in the race for governor of Georgia, where the Democrat party nominee Stacey Abrams, a black female, came within less than three percentage points of defeating Republican nominee Brian Kemp, a white male. Apparently, Abrams’ defeat did not set well with many black Democrats, especially when it was revealed that 11 percent of black males supported Kemp. But why would such a thing be seen as problematic to black people? Do they not have the right to vote for the candidate(s) of their choosing? Listen in as Darrell and Omaha (Virgil Walker) discuss through the lens of the gospel why this intra-ethnic form of ideological slavery must come to an end – now. EP # 051 | Ligonier: The State of Theology (Part 1)

Recently, Ligonier Ministries released its 2018 ‘State of Theology’ survey, which it conducted in partnership with Lifeway Research (an initial survey was conducted in 2016). To describe the results of the survey as a disheartening reflection of the condition of the evangelical church in America today would be a gross understatement. So disheartening, in fact, that Darrell and ‘Omaha’ (Virgil Walker) have decided to dedicate the next several episode of the Just Thinking broadcast to a discussion of the responses contained in the survey. Listen in as the brothers share their initial thoughts on what the survey says many Americans believe about the deity and nature of Jesus Christ. EP # 050 | Gosnell Movie

This week Omaha (Virgil Walker) fly solo. As he examine the atrocities committed by Kermit Gosnell and the movie that bears his name, we recognize a complete media blackout continues. The story of “America’s Biggest Serial Killer” seems to be completely silenced again as a Top 10 movie is being taken down from major screens around the country. Why is this happening? What would cause a profitable movie to get silence? Listen, as we will examine these issues through the lens of a Biblical Worldview to see what Scripture has to say about what’s happening today. EP # 049 | Tribalism & the Imago Dei

Recording artist and entrepreneur Kanye West made news – again – recently when he met with President Donald Trump at the White House. But some are asking: why would this make news to begin with? Good question. Why is it considered taboo in some ethnic circles for a black person, like West, to independently form and express political views that are different from other black people, many of whom believe he is obligated to represent because of his ethnicity? Another good question. Listen as Darrell and ‘Omaha’ (Virgil Walker) deal with these and other questions through the lens of Scripture. EP # 047 | Where is Your Hope?

It has been said that politics is a dirty business. That truism was put to the test recently, as things turned ugly on Capitol Hill during Senate hearings held amid sexual abuse allegations made against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford. Evangelical Christians have a lot riding on a Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court, particularly as it relates to the issue of abortion. But what if Kavanaugh is not confirmed? What then? Listen as Darrell and Omaha (Virgil) remind Christians where – and in whom – their hope should rest in a world in which leaders that are in the highest political positions are affected by sin and evil. In reflecting on Aretha Franklin’s legacy, Williams who, in 1984, eulogized Franklin’s father, Rev. C.L. Franklin, made some rather pointed and blunt comments about the state of the “black community” in America today. EP # 041 | The Narrow Road (Part 1)

It seems increasing numbers of so-called ‘evangelical’ Christian ministries are buying into a socio-cultural paradigm of Christianity, particularly as it relates to “affirming” professing believers who identify as “same-sex attracted”. One of the ways they do this is by focusing on virtues like ‘community’, ‘unity’, and ‘diversity’. So much so that a ministry based in the United Kingdom has gone as far as encouraging churches to audit themselves to ensure they are being “biblically inclusive”, especially of those who are LGBTQ. Listen in as Darrell and ‘Omaha’ (Virgil) discuss their concerns about a “gospel” that embraces a type of salvation without sanctification.
