#114: Kari Clark, Founder and CEO of Uplift, a Platform Supporting Working Moms

Kari's story: "During my first week back from maternity leave, my daughter's daycare closed for two weeks because they accidentally left a kid at the park. Rough start, and it didn't get easier from there. I used to question every decision I made as a mom and would end up crying in the bathroom at work. I just felt like I was reinventing the wheel each day, which is why I knew I had to build something to help myself (I was basically my own guinea pig) and the countless other ambitious women out there According to our insight at Uplift, what's hardest for moms is the emotional pressure. The guilt. The constant mental load. The rampant imposter syndrome. So, we've built a robust support system to up your working mom game. My story has a happy ending: I became better at my job (and life) post kids thanks to the many small changes I developed and then weaved into Uplift. I'm more efficient, more focused, and a hell of a lot happier. " What Uplift does: Uplift empowers working women to turn motherhood into a career advantage, not a drawback. They do this through 'snackable coaching' that fits in busy moms lives: coaching sessions during pumping, 5-minute exercises and audio content for commutes. Their program is based on interviews with 70 working moms at the top of their fields (such as the CTO of Nest, CMO of Hulu, and founder of Hint Water). Significant life changes have been shown to be excellent times to adopt new habits since your entire life is already changing.

#107: Zach Beinlich of Yam Haus on Playing Sold Out Shows, Growing a Fan Base, and the Business Behind a Successful Band

Zach Beinlich is the bass player of Yam Haus, a band which exploded in popularity in 2019. With "electro-poppy grooves and swooning vocals" (Star Tribune, June 2018), Minneapolis-based pop group, Yam Haus, is challenging the indie dominated scene of the Twin Cities. Tight guitars, dreamy synths, and clean production from Grammy award-winning producer Mark Heimermann, helped drive year one successes. Their debut album, "Stargazer," lands with the energy of WALK THE MOON, the charisma of Coldplay, and the emotion of Ed Sheeran. Strong melodies and thoughtful songwriting become even more apparent and powerful when big production and synth-heavy tracks are stripped back with the minimal arrangements of their acoustic EP, "Stargazer Sessions." With the "Yam" in Yam Haus standing for "You Are Me", members Lars Pruitt (lead vocal), Jake Felstow (drums), Zach Beinlich (bass), and Seth Blum (guitar) officially formed Yam Haus in 2017. The group launched their first single, West Coast, in April 2018 which gained over 100,000 streams within the first week of its release. Selling out shows across the midwest due to a quickly growing fan-base, the quartet has played alongside national acts Kacey Musgraves, Tori Kelly, Adam Lambert , Sugar Ray, Andy Grammer, O.A.R. , AWOLNATION, American Authors, Semisonic, lovelytheband, and Johnnyswim. With over 2.6 million streams on Spotify with their pop-inspired album, Stargazer, Yam Haus' sound evokes the names of WALK THE MOON, Maroon 5, and Ed Sheeran alike. Kicking off the summer on the national stage at Basilica Block Party, winning the Emerging Artist Series at Summerfest, and releasing their highly anticipated single, The Thrill, the band continues to build momentum as they continue to unveil new music into 2020.

#95: Christine Specht, CEO of Cousins Subs

Christine Specht grew up with Cousins Subs — the sub sandwich chain her dad, Bill Specht, founded with his cousin two years before she was born. She has held the roles of Human Resources Manager, Chief Operating Officer, President and CEO, and she now serves as the company's CEO. As President and CEO, she successfully brought new life to a legacy brand by leading a series of system changes, including: a largescale rebranding strategy to establish consistency and unify the brand in look and feel across all locations, implementation of grills in all restaurants and inclusion of Cousins Subs' Midwest heritage throughout its menu with signature local products including subs served with all Wisconsin cheeses. Specht strengthened Cousins Subs' unit-level economics, created a strong core of franchise partners and positioned the organization for growth in the Midwest. In 2018, she was honored as one of the Milwaukee Business Journal's Women of Influence and recognized in FastCasual magazine's "Women in the Lead" series. #93: Hank Watt, Co-Founder and Owner of Nature's Wild Berry

Hank Watt is the Co-Founder and Owner of Nature's Wild Berry, a company he started because of his own health struggles and a desire to help others. Read his story below... My parents met in medical school. My grandparents met in medical school. Up until college, everyone thought that I was going into medicine. But I knew early on that the last thing I'd ever become is a MD. In my 20s my parents were diagnosed with cancer 18 months apart. Going through that taught me a lot. You can always look back and say those were the days - but if you don't have your health, you don't have a lot to look forward to. It was time for me to create myself and I needed to make some changes. I needed to make my health the priority it should have been. I had a lot of excuses why I was 250 lbs and a size 40. It was time to eliminate those and reduce the harm I'd caused. The thing about being an emotional eater is that you're constantly facing cravings. Will power and self-discipline have nothing to do with it. Sometimes all you can think about is taste. If I was going to succeed, I'd have to forget about controlling the cravings and figure out how to control my taste. Lucky for me, I had a new friend who had been making healthy food taste delicious for years. His family's restaurant, Planet Raw, was famous in San Francisco, Santa Monica and West Hollywood. If someone could help me, it'd be my friend, Juliano. Juliano ordered me these red berries I'd never eaten before. I had to try them because they sounded unreal, like the beans Jack used to climb the beanstalk. They promised to turn sour and tarty food sweet! How had I never heard of this? He made me a super healthy juice and took a sip. He made the bitter looking face. I ate a berry and took a sip. I couldn't believe it - it tasted different to me - it was so sweet! I started making a liter of this juice every day and lost 60 lbs in about 6 months. Today I'm 170 lbs and a size 32. Now I crave salads and smoothies and my sweet tooth is happy! Juliano and I are raising awareness about the non-gmo ledidi berry that we now call Nature's Wild Berry. #88: Andy Stein, Founder of Orphaned Starfish Foundation, on Building an Organization Helping 13,000+ Orphans, Victims of Abuse and At-Risk Children Worldwide

Andy Stein founded the Orphaned Starfish Foundation in 2001 to help orphans, victims of abuse and at-risk children worldwide escape their cycles of poverty and abuse through education and job training. From humble beginnings building a small computer vocational training center in an orphanage for young victims of abuse in Santiago, Chile, he has built the Foundation to now serve over 13,000 children in 62 programs in 27 countries: Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Honduras, Bolivia, Chile, Brazil, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Ecuador, Haiti, Cambodia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Uruguay, American Samoa & Nepal. Andy has partnered with local partners in each of these countries, including Save the Children, Rotary Club, and USAID. "Tio Andy! Tio Mago!" Andy makes yearly visits to each Orphaned Starfish program. Mago is Spanish for Magician. He brings a magic show complete with balloon animals for all the children. (His highest amount recorded was 1,000 balloon animals in one sitting.) His visits also allow for a personal connection not only to the children but to the institutions and their directors and teachers. Every visit helps OSF learn what is needed at our programs so we may better serve these children. Every trip also allows for new program scouting. For his work helping the children of the favelas of Brazil, Andy was awarded an Honorary Citizenship in Rio De Janeiro by their Congress. In the United States, he has also been awarded the Jefferson Award for Community Service, the key to the city of Miami Beach, and several other state and local honors.
