S2 Ep 7Spiritual Gifts and the Church with Matt Lantz

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Matt Lantz about serving the Body of Christ with our spiritual gifts. Matt gave us an overview of the purpose and function of each of the spiritual gifts and how we can go about identifying our gifts and use them to serve in our local churches. What’s the purpose of stewarding our gifts for the glory of God? Matt is a husband, father, and pastor who lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and three children. He’s a graduate of TCU and Dallas Theological Seminary and has been working in full-time ministry since 2000 preparing the way for the Lord Jesus in the lives of men and women. Matt was the founding director of a discipleship program called the Forge at Pine Cove where he spent 12 years helping young men and women learn their identity and steward it well. He has recently moved on from the Forge and is now serving as the Recruitment and Development Pastor and the Associate Pastor of the West Campus at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth, TX. MATT’S RESOURCES Talk to your church Serve Ask a mentor for their insight DEVELOPING AN IDENTITY STATEMENT “It’s less about crafting a cool sounding statement, than it is about understanding in humility who you are and how God designed you (Ephesians 2:10). The identity statement is essentially not a discovery of who you are as much as a declaration of what God has done in creating you. You cannot do that by yourself.” With the help of others, begin to determine these three elements of an identity statement: You are designed in this way… To work with these kinds of people… To accomplish this goal “An identity statement is a statement about design, who the design is for, and what the design is meant to accomplish specifically for the kingdom within the Body of Christ.” CONNECT WITH MATT Website Instagram Twitter DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What are spiritual gifts? What are the areas in your life that you are naturally good at that you find yourself using for your own purposes? How can knowing that help you see your spiritual gifts? On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Sandra McCracken about worshipping the Lord together in the context of corporate worship. Whether in a theater or in a chapel, she is a dynamic performer who blurs the lines of what church music sounds like, captivating and inviting audiences to sing along. While many of her songs like “We Will Feast In The House Of Zion” and “Thy Mercy My God” have settled into regular rotation in Christian worship services internationally, she has also had songs recorded by All Sons And Daughters, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Audrey Assad, A Rocha Compilation, Bifrost Arts, Caedmon’s Call and others. S2 Ep 2The Local Church with Susan Hunt

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Susan Hunt about the local church! One of our mutual friends rightly stated that Susan bleeds ecclesiology, or the theology of the church. After talking with her, I couldn’t agree more. She said, “I can barely speak the word ‘church’ without weeping in wonder at the very idea! The Body of Christ, the Bride of Christ, the family of God! The church is the people of God in all times and in all places! We’re those who were chosen in Christ in eternity past! We’re being redeemed, adopted, and sanctified in him! The church is those who are indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit! Think of that! The very Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead! We’re the ones with the potential to make Jesus known! To reflect the glory of God in a dark, broken world! So, the church is the people who have been entrusted with the living Word of the living God.” SUSAN’S RESOURCES The Bible Consider the historic creeds (like Westminster Confession of Faith and the Heidelberg Catechism) Discover a biblical perspective of our womanhood and God’s calling for us as women in our church Find a small group of women to dig into the Word with other women SCRIPTURE REFERENCES Ephesians 4:11 1 Peter 2:9 Numbers 2:2 Acts 2 Hebrews 10:22 Philippians 3 John 17 - Jesus’ prayer Psalm 92 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What is the local church? S1 Ep 63Humility with Hannah Anderson

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Hannah Anderson on the topic of humility. We talked about everything from what humility is to how Jesus embodied humility here on this earth. Here is a quote from her book, Humble Roots, “Before we can even begin to answer our call to come to him, Jesus comes to us. Because we could never sufficiently humble ourselves, Jesus humbles himself, and by doing so, he became both the model and the means of our own humility. Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus shows us our true identity as people dependent on God for life. And through his life, death, and resurrection, he imparts this humble life to us once again.” Hannah and I flesh this out in a real practical way in today’s conversation. So you’ll know her a little better, Hannah lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she spends her days working with her husband in rural ministry, writing, and caring for their family. As a writer and co-host of the weekly podcast, Persuasion, she enjoys exploring how the gospel informs and transforms how we think about current events and popular trends. Her books Made for More and Humble Roots unpack the question of our identity and purpose as women destined to reflect God's glory to the world around us. She also has a new book coming out on October 2 called All That’s Good: Recovering the Lost Art of Discernment. S1 Ep 56From Life-Taker to Life-Giver with Karen Hodge

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Karen Hodge about being a life-giver! Something I know we all desire to be. We talked about everything from the distinction between a life-taker and a life-giver, to who our ultimate life-giver is, Jesus Christ. It is from the perspective of a wife, mother, leader and fellow pilgrim that she hopes to offer insights from God’s Word concerning how she and the listener can most effectively learn to enjoy and extend God’s glory. I loved it when Karen said “a life-giving woman sets the gospel on display in her life, and people look in and they look at it. It’s a stunning thing, because it’s not about her, because it’s all about him". S1 Ep 55Growing in Godliness with Nana Dolce

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Nana Dolce about growing in godliness. We talked about everything from when we could see traces of our own desire to grow in godliness, to what, or better yet, who, sustains our sanctification today! The only problem with this interview is that the entire thing is quote worthy. I wanted to copy and paste everything Nana said into the intro. But here’s one snippet to give y’all a taste of what’s to come, “Remembering the one who bled for me, who died for me, who resurrected for me, who ascended for me, who is interceding for me. Who has prayed for my sanctification. Jesus prayed for my sanctification. 1 Corinthians says that he is my sanctification. So the one who achieved all of that for me. When I hear passages like that of keeping my eyes on him so that I please him, it motivates me to run!” Y’all are going to be fist-pumping, dancing, running-around-excited about what God did for us through our justification and what he continues to do in our sanctification every. single. day! Nana also speaks to those of us who feel like we’re watching grass grow when it comes to growing in godliness. I am so thankful to be dancing, crawling, limping, and running with you guys, even at a distance. So you’ll know her a little better, Nana was born in Ghana. S1 Ep 54Shame with Abbey Wedgeworth

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with my friend Abbey Wedgeworth about shame. We ran the gamut on the topic of shame, moving from questions we can ask ourselves to determine whether or not we are functioning in shame, to how the gospel actually addresses shame. Listen to what she said: “In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus we see that God is faithful to us because of his love. Not because we’re worthy. So he loves us not because we’re lovable, but we are made lovely because he sets his love on us. He makes us beautiful. In exchange for our shame he offers acceptance, honor, worth, and even glory.” Whew! If you don’t walk away from this episode encouraged, I cannot help you. So you’ll know her a little better, Abbey is a wife, mother, and nap-time writer living in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
