S3:165 Psalm 80
When those around you are going through suffering, how can we point them back to our Savior? Today Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member Lauren Browning to talk through Psalm 80. This passages displays both our sin and God's solution to our sin. Jesus Christ is the vine out of Egypt who brings salvation to the nations. Not only is Jesus the answer to our sin and suffering, but He is with us in our suffering. When we cry out to God, it shows the dependent nature of our heart. May we be reminded even in suffering to continue to abide with Jesus and look to Him as our salvation by the power of His Spirit. S3:164 Psalm 79
How should we respond to God when He disciplines us for our sinful actions? In Psalm 79, Asaph writes a song of lament after Jeremiah had prophesied about God’s judgement over Israel and the Babylonians’ destruction of Jerusalem. Join the Journey Staff Member Lauren Atkinson and faithful Watermark Member and college student Gabby Parker point out that even in Israel's suffering and separation from the promised land, God is still with them. Additional Scriptures Referenced: Matthew 18:21-22, “Then Peter came up and said to him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.’” Interested in Rally? S3:163 Psalm 78
Why did the psalmist feel the need to remind readers of everything the Lord did for them? Today, Ben Krejci and Ethan Howard are jumping into Psalm 78 and talking about how we know who God is because of how he has revealed himself. God is the initiator of his relationship with Israel, even in their sin. He consistently pursues them despite their sin and rebellion. This psalm shows us who God is, who we are, and who we are in right relationship to Him in Christ. As we look back at how God was faithful to Israel, we can be reminded of how He is always faithful to us today. Additional Scriptures Referenced:1 Peter 2:9 – "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024:https://a.co/d/7rt0H3gGot kids? S3:162 Psalm 77
Is it possible for God's steadfast love to cease? And is it okay for us to ask that? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Watermark staff member Lauren Atkinson to talk about Psalm 77 and how we wrestle with doubt that comes from suffering. When Asaph is in suffering, he is honest with God and calls himself to remember God's faithfulness in his life. Jesus Christ has shown us that His love for us could never cease. Additional Scripture Referenced: Psalm 73 – "why do the wicked prosper?" S3:160 Psalm 75
When the world feels like it is spinning out of control, how do you remind yourself that God is the one who steadies the pillars? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark member Amber H. dive into Psalm 75 and talk about how God is just and executes good judgement. Because of this, we can sing praises to the Lord no matter the circumstance. Additional Scripture Referenced: Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Psalm 33:4-5, “For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.” 2 Peter 3:9, " The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." Who or what is a Leviathan? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark high school senior Tee Parker dive into Psalm 74 and the different interpretations of Leviathan. Whether the Leviathan was a myth about chaos or a real sea serpent creature, we can know that when facing evil and enemies of God, we can trust that in the struggle, God will be faithful to deliver us. S3:158 Psalm 73
How can we learn from verses we may not easily understand? Today, Join the Journey staff member Lauren Atkinson considers the context while studying Psalm 73. The author, Asaph, was a righteous man who was despondent as he saw the prosperity of the wicked. When we see the wicked prosper, we can look to God for wisdom in discerning the future, and realize that first: purity, obedience and faithfulness are not for nothing, and second: that in God’s presence, there is fulness of joy. Additional Scripture referenced: 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” Hebrews 11:24-25, “By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.” Grab a Psalms Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:157 Psalm 72
Today, Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member, Ben Solomon, who serves with School Impact to reach students and parents of local schools. In Psalm 72, Solomon describes a just king, but how does that relate to our call as Christians today? Ben walks us through how Psalm 72 is a picture of God’s heart for children in poverty and how we as believers can respond. No matter our decisions on education, our conversations should reflect the love of Christ and his heart for children of every socioeconomic status. Additional Scripture Referenced: Ephesians 4:29 – "let no unwholesome talk come out of our mouths" Colossians 4:6 – "let your speech always be gracious" For more of Ben’s story, check out his previous episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s2-235-nehemiah-13/id1600151923?i=1000637165655 To learn more about School Impact and resources for parents or ways to serve, check out this link: https://www.watermark.org/ministries/engage/school-impact Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:156 Psalm 71
How can we balance petitioning God for help while placing our confidence in Him? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Join The Journey staff member Lauren Atkinson to talk through Psalm 71. David appeals to God’s righteousness and asks for God’s refuge while recounting God’s faithfulness in the past, present and future. This psalm provides a model for how we can pray as we praise God for His character and ask Him to act according to who He is. We know now that David's prayer for salvation and deliverance in God's righteousness is answered fully and finally in Christ. Additional Scripture mentioned: Colossians 2:9-10, “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” 1 Corinthians 1:30, “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” Check out Lauren’s previous episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3oYLSsWyw2kTfnYCz7xWyL?si=dcec620db1284013 If you're interested in serving on the Join The Journey Hospitality Team, check out this link: https://www.watermark.org/search/serve?query=Join%20the%20journey Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:155 Psalm 70
Why does the Lord sometimes delay instead of helping us right away? Today Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member Sara Fusco to talk through Psalm 70 and why sometimes God makes us wait. In a world of instant gratification, God often uses waiting to grow our patience, trust and dependence on Him. What if God asking us to wait is actually out of an overflow of his love for us? If God is asking us to wait, and God is always good, then waiting must be good too. God will always use waiting for our good and His glory as He uses it to make us more like Jesus Christ. Additional Scripture Referenced: Romans 5:3-5 – "hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." S3:154 Psalm 69
How should we respond to God when we face despair? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter and Join the Journey Intern Lauren Fricke go through Psalm 69 as David walks through deep despair yet turns to God in honesty and reliance. This psalm is a wonderful reminder of God’s faithfulness and protective hand when we go through the harder times of life. Additional Scripture Referenced: Isaish 43:1-3, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.” John 15:25, “But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: They hated me without a cause”. 2 Thessalonians 3:3, “But the Lord is faithful. S3:153 Psalm 68
Today Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark Member Brandon Pokley to talk about Psalm 68. This passage shows us more about who God is by seeing what He values. We see many elements about God's character from this psalm found in Jesus' teachings as well, as Jesus Christ is the very "image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) and the "exact imprint of his nature" (Hebrews 1:3). As we see God rightly, the Holy Spirit transforms our character to become more like Christ and find joy in His presence. Additional Scripture Referenced: Psalm 16:11 – "in Your presence there is fullness of joy" If you're interested in serving on the Join The Journey Resource or Hospitality Team, check out this link: https://www.watermark.org/search/serve?query=Join%20the%20journey Grab a Join The Journey Journal for Psalms: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:152 Psalm 67
What does God's care toward all of the nations teach us about him? Today Emma Dotter is joined by Join The Journey staff member Rebekah Banks to talk about Psalm 67 and God's heart for the nations. The mission of God doesn't just start in the New Testament. Israel was to be a reflection of God to the world, but they failed. Christ came so that all nations could know God and glorify him. As believers, we are united to Christ by His Spirit who is transforming us to look like Christ and reflect His glory to the nations. Additional Scripture Referenced: 1 Kings 8 – Solomon asks the Lord to bless the foreigner Ezekiel 36 – "for the sake of My holy name" John 17 – "glorify the Son that the Son may glorify You" 2 Corinthians 3 – "we are being transformed into the same image" To learn more about how you can get involved with global missions at Watermark, check out this link: https://www.watermark.org/engage/global Grab a Join The Journey Journal for Psalms: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:151 Psalm 66
Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Join The Journey Editor Makaila Swank to talk about Psalm 66, a thanksgiving psalm praising God for his faithfulness. This psalm models for us how we can express suffering we experience, appeal to God’s mercy as we ask for help, praise God for his deliverance, and continue to praise Him for future faithfulness. We have hope for today knowing that we have been freed from the power of sin. The encouragement this psalm brings is amplified knowing that there is a day where we will experience no more pain or suffering for eternity. Additional Scripture Referenced Exodus 14 – God parts the Red Sea during the Exodus Psalm 137 – psalm recalling Israel’s time in exile Isaiah 43:2 – “when you pass through the water, I will be with you…” For more of Makaila’s story, check out her previous episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/join-the-journey/id1600151923?i=1000624748142 If you are interested in serving with Join The Journey, check out this link: https://www.watermark.org/search/serve?query=Join%20the%20journey Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:150 Psalm 65
How does nature sing to God? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member, Alfred Abraham to explain how nature declares the God of our salvation in Psalm 65. Nature speaks to how God preserves, provides for and protects us. As God cares about nature’s flourishing, so he cares about our flourishing. As Creator, God shows His power in creation and His intentionality in our lives today. Additional Scripture Referenced: Acts 2-3 – Pentecost John 6:35 – Jesus is the bread of life John 7:37 – Jesus the Living Water quenches the thirsty Matthew 5:14-16 – Jesus is the Light of world Philippians 2:4-11 – Christ’s example of humility in salvation Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:149 Psalm 64
Why is it hard for us to ask for help? Today on the podcast, Emma Dotter takes us through Psalm 64 where David is asking God for emotional protection from discouragement and physical protection from harm. It can be hard to ask for help from others and the Lord, whether that is from fear of being vulnerable or a desire to be self-sufficient. When we don’t ask for help, we reinforce the idea that we should do things on our own instead of depending on the Lord. Thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we have full freedom to come before Him in need. When we ask God for help like David does in Psalm 64, we can move from hopelessness to joy, gratitude and praise for the Lord. S3:148 Psalm 63
Do we want God more than we want anything else? Today, Emma Dotter walks us through Psalm 63 where David sees his need for God, his dependence on Him and the provision He provides. From the moment David’s day begins, he thirsts for God as if he is in a desert with no water. When we sense that longing for something more, may we be reminded that Jesus Christ is the only one who can satisfy our souls. May we follow David’s example with praise as the mechanism for a heart of contentment in Christ. Additional Scripture Referenced: Psalm 27:4 – “one thing have I asked of the Lord…” Philippians 1:21 – “to live is Christ; to die is gain” Matthew 7:7-8 – “ask and it will be given to you” John 10:14 – “I am the Good Shepherd” Matt 6:31-32 – “Your heavenly father knows you need all these things” John 6:35 – “he who believes in me shall never thirst” Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:147 Psalm 62
What is the importance of waiting in silence before the Lord? In Psalm 62, David is placing his trust in God while facing hardship and problems in his life. Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark staff member Melissa Miller point out that instead of trying to fix it himself or ignore his issues, he chooses to listen to God and sit before the Lord in silence. Just like David, we are called by God to slow down to catch up to the pace of God. Additional Scripture mentioned in the passage: Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:146 Psalm 61
Do we say vows to God today? Emma Dotter is joined by Watermark staff member Lauren Atkinson to talk through Psalm 61 and how we can use David’s words as a model for our prayers daily. David’s desire is for God to hear him and allow him to be in God’s presence. His vows to God are not something required for God to hear us today. For those in Christ, we can pray to God with confidence that He hears us. Take a few minutes today to pray through Psalm 61 as David teaches us what a prayer of dependence looks like. Additional Scripture Referenced: Psalm 139:7 – “Where shall I flee from your presence?” 2 Samuel 6 – David sets up the tabernacle Matthew 5 – Sermon on the Mount 1 Corinthians 10:4 – “the Rock was Christ” Matthew 16:18 – “on this Rock I will build my church” John 1:14 – “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” Revelation 21:3 – “the dwelling place of God is with man” To hear more of Lauren’s story, check out her previous episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s3-138-psalm-53/id1600151923?i=1000662389567 Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:145 Psalm 60
What is a didactic psalm? Today, Emma Dotter teaches through Psalm 60, where David is lamenting the costliness of Israel’s victory and teaching hearers to trust the Lord when they encounter similar difficulties. David understood that God is the ultimate deliverer of the people. Our victory comes through Christ, and we will reign with Him, the ultimate Victor, in the end. Take some time to remind yourself of the truth of victory in Christ. Listen in for a study trick on how to remember key events about Israel’s sin and God’s promises in Shechem. Additional Scripture Referenced: Genesis 12 – Schechem is where God promised land to Abraham’s family Joshua 24:6 – Schechem is where Joshua encourages people to obey and follow God Genesis 34 – story of Dinah 1 Corinthians 15 – “Thanks be to God who gives us the victory in Christ” 2 Samuel 8; 1 Kings 11; 1 Chronicles 18 – Israel's victory over the Edomites Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? How can we suffer well on this side of heaven? In today’s episode, Parker Primrose fills in for Emma Dotter as he and faithful Watermark member Bentley Borrego discuss how David combats suffering, distress, and persecution in a biblical way. Bentley points out how, when suffering, David cries out to God in dependance, submits in faith, seeks His’s glory, and chooses to praise Him. S3:143 Psalm 58
Today, Emma Dotter walks us through Psalm 58 and answers the question, “Why do we need righteous judges?” Imagine if you were on trial and you didn’t have a fair, moral judge. In this Psalm, David is crying out for God’s justice on unjust judges or rulers who don’t make wise decisions. We can draw from David’s response as we consider how we respond to injustice or unrighteous rulers. David understood that all authority resides under God’s ultimate authority, and he ran to God with his concerns and desires. As believers, we have hope knowing that God puts all leaders into and out of authority in His timing. Jesus is the ultimate righteous Judge. Why does God keep my tears in a bottle? What does that even mean? Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark staff member Wes Butler in today’s episode talk about the historical significance of people using bottles to catch tears and how God never lets our sorrow go to waste. Wes also points out that in Psalm 56, David is an example of how laments are a prayer in pain that leads to faith because knowing God’s faithfulness leads us to hope in Christ. S3:140 Psalm 55
Where is God when we are experiencing betrayal? S3:139 Psalm 54
What is a freewill offering and what does it have to do with gratitude? In today’s episode covering Psalm 54, Emma Dotter asks us about what our natural response to God is and whether we are moved to gratitude when we think about Him. In the Old Testament, a freewill offering was a voluntary offering to God as God moved the hearts of the people, while today, as believers, it more looks like noticing and obeying when the Holy Spirit moves us to honor God out of a heart posture of gratitude. Additional Scripture mentioned in the episode: Requirements for a freewill offering : Leviticus 23:38, Leviticus 22:17-25, Numbers 15:1-10 Deuteronomy 12, Deuteronomy 16:10, Leviticus 7:16-18, Exodus 35:10-29, 1 Chronicles 29:6-9, Ezra 3:5, Ezra 2:68, Ezra 7:16, Ezra 8:28, 2 Chronicles 31, Ezekiel 46:12, Amos 4:5, Exodus 35:29, 2 Corinthians 9:7 Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:138 Psalm 53
Today on the podcast, Emma Dotter is joined by new Join The Journey Volunteer Admin, Lauren Atkinson, to discuss what David means in Psalm 53 when he says “there is none who does good.” David defines a fool not by someone’s intellectual capacity but by their spiritual state. Fools reject God in their hearts, and that is all of us before Christ. David cries out to God for salvation to come out of Zion. We know now the answer to David’s prayer. A Savior has come out of Zion, and His Name is Jesus Christ. S3:137 Psalm 52
Who are we trying to promote in our lives, us or God? In this episode, Emma Dotter points out man’s tendency to lean toward temporary gratification in seeking praise, but that those who choose to be rooted deep in the house of God shine for Christ, not themselves. As believers, we are ambassadors for Christ and witnesses to all people, and we are left with the choice whether to glorify Him and trust in His steadfast love and power in our lives. Additional Scripture mentioned in the episode: Isaiah 7:9, “…If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.” Philippians 4:11, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-17, “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere…” Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:136 Psalm 51
Can God take the Holy Spirit away from us? Today, Emma Dotter unpacks Psalm 49, where David is begging God to not remove the Holy Spirit from him after he committed a grievous sin. Thankfully, as believers, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit when we are saved and cannot have Him removed from us. While we may experience consequences for our actions, we can find freedom in confessing our sins and comfort knowing that our standing with God is dependent on Jesus’ merit, not ours. Additional Scripture mentioned in the episode: 2 Samual 11, David commits adultery Psalm 32:1-11, “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered…” Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? S3:135 Psalm 50
Today, Emma Dotter is joined by faithful Watermark member Alexia Voltzow to talk through Psalm 50 where God judges the moralists and the wicked. All of creation belongs to God, so He does not need burnt offerings or our performance. There is good news for the people of God – in Christ the ultimate sacrifice has been provided. God desires our hearts, and our thanksgiving honors Him. Listen through the end to hear Alexia’s advice for cultivating a heart of thanksgiving every day. S3:134 Psalm 49
What happens when we trust in money? In Psalm 49, the psalmists lay out how wealth gives us a false sense of security because temporal solutions cannot solve eternal problems. In this episode, Emma Dotter recognizes the contrast between the shepherd of those who trust in wealth with those who trust in God and leaves us with an encouragement of how God rescued us from death and a challenge of how to combat the problem of placing our identity in things that do not last. Additional Scripture mentioned in the episode: Matthew 6:19-24, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” Luke 16:19-31, story of Lazarus and the rich man Colossians 1:13, "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son" Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? All throughout the Bible, we see God’s love and protection of His people even when they don’t deserve it. Today, Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark member Jamie Morrison discuss Psalm 48 and how we can experience God firsthand through Jesus, rest in the fact that God loves and protects His people, and learn from the big view of God that is presented at the end of this psalm. Additional Scripture mentioned in the episode: Revelation 21, God is among us, and we get to experience Him firsthand through Jesus 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat prays to God for help against his enemies Interested in going to or leading a Wake group? Is it okay to move around in worship? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark staff member and singer Davy Leffall (new last name alert!) talk about how being informed by God’s Word helps us to distinguish between objective truth and subjective opinions. Davy then goes on to show how Psalm 47 is about recognizing God’s presence and character and responding rightly to Him. Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Watermark Institute fellow Hannah Staubs as Hannah wraps up her time in the Institute and walks through Psalm 46. In a broken world, tragedy is going to happen. As believers, we find comfort knowing that Christ has entered into our brokenness. He is our refuge and help. The Lord of Hosts is not far off, but near and powerful. He is the God of Jacob, who always has been faithful and always will be faithful. Grab a NEW Join The Journey Journal for 2024: https://a.co/d/7rt0H3g Got kids? Today, Parker Primrose fills in for Emma Dotter as he and faithful Watermark member Tip Housewright discuss how Psalm 45 captures the lavish picture of the beauty and majesty of God and our relationship with Him. Tip shows how this psalm points to Christ and His bride, the church, and explains why it is so important to see the Old Testament through the lens of the gospel and how this psalm inspires him to live for eternity and love what lasts. S3:129 Psalm 44
Where is God in our suffering? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter unpacks Psalm 44 and how we should respond when bad things continue to happen in our lives. Even when we are faithful in pursuing God and obeying Him, life may still not go our way. At the end of the episode, Emma draws hope from Paul in Romans 8, when he references this psalm to encourage believers that in Christ and His love, we are secure and will see ultimate victory.
