What does "this one was born there" mean? Emma Dotter walks through Psalm 87 and shows how the story of Nicodemus in John 3 connects to our passage today. In the Old Testament, Zion is the place where God would meet with his people in the temple. We see in this psalm that Zion carries deep spiritual significance because it represents a people or nation belonging to God. There are people from all over the world who place their faith in Christ and are reborn, similar to how Zion represents a new birth and new identity as the people of God. How can we make sense of passages in the Bible talking about mercy and others where the writers are crying out for judgement on their enemies? Today, Emma Dotter dives into Psalm 83, an imprecatory psalm, to answer this question. The God of the Old Testament truly is the God of the New Testament. All of us in our sin were enemies of God before Christ's sacrifice for us and our salvation. On the cross Jesus incurred the wrath of God, and in so doing he provided mercy and forgiveness for those who would believe. On the cross, judgement and salvation happen at the same time. God is glorified both when he defeats those who oppose him and when he saves those who oppose him. Do you remember and celebrate God’s faithfulness? In ancient Israeli culture, God commanded them to celebrate His past faithfulness to them through various feasts. In today’s episode, Emma Dotter points out how Psalm 81 was probably referencing the Feast of Tabernacles and is a foreshadowing of Christ dwelling among us. Celebrating God’s deeds is important because gratitude moves us to action and combats discouragement. Why did the psalmist feel the need to remind readers of everything the Lord did for them? Today, Ben Krejci and Ethan Howard are jumping into Psalm 78 and talking about how we know who God is because of how he has revealed himself. God is the initiator of his relationship with Israel, even in their sin. He consistently pursues them despite their sin and rebellion. This psalm shows us who God is, who we are, and who we are in right relationship to Him in Christ. How can we learn from verses we may not easily understand? Today, Join the Journey staff member Lauren Atkinson considers the context while studying Psalm 73. The author, Asaph, was a righteous man who was despondent as he saw the prosperity of the wicked. When we see the wicked prosper, we can look to God for wisdom in discerning the future, and realize that first: purity, obedience and faithfulness are not for nothing, and second: that in God’s presence, there is fulness of joy. In a world of instant gratification, God often uses waiting to grow our patience, trust and dependence on Him. What if God asking us to wait is actually out of an overflow of his love for us? How should we respond to God when we face despair? Why is it hard for us to ask for help? Today, Emma Dotter walks us through Psalm 58 and answers the question, “Why do we need righteous judges?” Imagine if you were on trial and you didn’t have a fair, moral judge. In this Psalm, David is crying out for God’s justice on unjust judges or rulers who don’t make wise decisions. We can draw from David’s response as we consider how we respond to injustice or unrighteous rulers. David understood that all authority resides under God’s ultimate authority, and he ran to God with his concerns and desires. What is a freewill offering and what does it have to do with gratitude? Who are we trying to promote in our lives, us or God? Can God take the Holy Spirit away from us? Today, Emma Dotter unpacks Psalm 49, where David is begging God to not remove the Holy Spirit from him after he committed a grievous sin. Thankfully, as believers, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit when we are saved and cannot have Him removed from us.
