This episode sheds light on a very sinister time in history when abortion was weaponized against Jews in ghettos in Nazi occupied territories. Decree of 1942: Pregnancy in the ghetto is forbidden. Every pregnancy must be terminated. A pregnancy may be carried to full term only by women who are in the eighth or ninth month. Beginning in September, a total ban is placed on births. Women who are pregnant will be executed. In Lithuania on this day in Jewish history, Jewish doctors in the Kovno ghetto were forced to abide by the decree. They were told that if they terminated the pregnancies, the mothers' lives would be spared. Under duress and because of this deception, the rabbis agreed to allow this violation of the Torah's prohibition of abortion to save the mothers' lives. Tragically, the women were murdered not long afterward. The 'save the mother's life exception' to the prohibition of abortion in Judaism is commonly misused to this day to allow killing children in the womb. In our time, a mother's life is rarely in danger from a pregnancy, yet, the lie justifies the child's destruction. Occasionally, women die from abortion, and many suffer physical damage and spiritual death afterwards. We cite a Dvar Torah published by Bar-Ilan University in Israel that details the legalized human rights abuses against Jewish women and children during the war. Next, we visit the website of Hadassah Medical Center in Israel to read that they do 1st and 2nd trimester non-surgical abortions, revealing that the 'save the mother's life' lie remains a useful tool of death despite the well known fact that abortion very rarely poses a threat to a mother's life and the dangers of abortion to women far outweigh those of childbirth. In this episode, we share beautiful life affirming messages from two righteous rabbis who provide Torah based arguments against the utilitarian approach to medicine taken by the UK National Health Service. They are quoted in a story about NHS providers' cost cutting measures in the time of Covid, forcing parents to withdraw life saving medical care from their children, as well as increased pressure to withdraw life saving medical care from their elderly parents. Rabbi Moshe Avraham Halperin from the Science and Technology Torah Law Institute says, "Life is holy, the holiest thing in the world, because it is through life that we serve God. In this episode, we examine how Torah is misused by Jewish abortion advocates to justify unlimited abortion rights. One of the most widely corrupted verses is Exodus 21:22-25, a consideration of the fines imposed by an act of involuntary manslaughter. We generally see a corrupted interpretation of this text, one in which the unborn child is given less value than a born person. It is this difference in value that abortion advocates partly base their premise that Judaism endorses unlimited abortion. Rabbi Shlomo Nachman corrects this corrupted misinterpretation with a sound, halachic version with the correct translation from the original language which clearly shows that Judaism gives the unborn child fully human status and the same protections and respect as all other people. In this episode, we explore the Torah portion, Metzora, by sharing our Pro-Life Torah Blog. Our tradition explains that a person suffering from skin lesions may actually have a spiritual sickness caused by engaging in slander, gossip, and arrogant self-will. Our sages explain that their suffering comes from an imbalance between loving kindness and disciplined strength. The patient recovers through a treatment of intense self-examination and sincere atonement for harms done. We associate this imbalance and remedy with the strength of character and conviction it takes to include the child and father in a whole life solution to unplanned pregnancy. Our Christian friends have a long tradition of providing church based practical and moral support to mothers, fathers, and their unborn children.
