Scheduling Sex, Overcoming Adversity, and Intermittent Fasting With Cynthia Thurlow

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Cynthia Thurlow. Cynthia is a globally recognized expert in nutrition and intermittent fasting, highly sought-after speaker, and the CEO and founder of Everyday Wellness Project. She's been a nurse practitioner for 20+ years, and is a two-time TEDx speaker. Her viral TEDx Talk: Intermittent Fasting: Transformative Technique has been viewed nearly 5.5 million times in less than 9 months. She has been featured on ABC, FOX5, KTLA, CW and in Medium and Entrepreneur. She's also the host of Everyday Wellness podcast, which was listed as "20 Podcasts That Will Help You Grow in 2020"  by Entrepreneur magazine. In this episode, Cynthia dives deep into her viral TEDx Talk. She speaks about what it was like to prep for her speeches and how her hospital experience fueled her drive even more. Then, we talk about why Cynthia ended up leaving clinical medicine; she had been feeling very disillusioned with the practice for a long time. Fortunately, Cynthia landed on her feet, and she loves being an entrepreneur and teaching people about nutrition and intermittent fasting. Tune in as we chat about sex, healthy foods, and the life lessons we should teach our children.[04:00] What It's Like To Actually Give An Unforgettable TEDx TalkFor Cynthia’s first TEDx Talk, her most significant concern was if she could pull off memorizing 15 to 20 minutes of a speech. During the event, her goal was to be the best speaker. After the first experience, Cynthia felt completely confident that she could pull off another TEDx Talk. A month before the second TEDx Talk, Cynthia was sent off for an emergency CAT scan which revealed that her appendix had ruptured. Unfortunately, the entire length of her colon was inflamed, which explained why she was in so much pain.Next, the surgeon came in, and the first thing she said was, “if I take you to surgery tonight, you'll lose your colon.” Cynthia was in a panic – she didn’t want to lose her colon. However, Cynthia wasn’t getting any better. She had lost fifteen pounds in five days. When they did the second CAT scan, they realized that she developed abscesses in her abdomen.27 days after Cynthia left the hospital, she did the talk on intermittent fasting. Ten days later, Cynthia had her appendix out. [12:25] Writing A Speech And Committing It To Memory For TEDxCynthia knew that she needed a solid two weeks to write a speech and commit to memory. She only had twelve minutes – it was a challenge because when you get up in front of a live audience, your cadence generally slows down. Once you find your stride, you relax, and you might draw things out a little longer. So, midway through her talk, Cynthia realized that she didn't have enough time to get through the whole speech. Right after the TEDx Talk, Cynthia told her coach it was the worst one that she has ever done. [15:15] Becoming A Popular TEDx Talk After Almost DyingCynthia knows that mindset is everything. So, Cynthia wanted to get up there and give her talk no matter what. After, she knew she was going to be so proud of herself.Retrospectively, she has no idea how it all came together. When she watches it now, she thinks about how painful it was.Luckily, Cynthia is now in a completely different place on every level.[24:05] Ditching Doctor Days For The Untamed World Of EntrepreneurshipOn April 1, 2016, Cynthia left clinical medicine. She had been feeling very disillusioned with clinical medicine for a long time.Eventually, Cynthia realized what truly lit her up. What Cynthia enjoys doing is food and nutrition work. Plus, she loves to talk about the influence of food and nutrition on our well-being and our health.Cynthia spent the rest of 2016 navigating the journey from being a clinician to being an entrepreneur. She built a group program and was profitable fairly quickly.Plus, Cynthia started podcasting – it is an amazing opportunity to connect with people![32:10] Potential Pitfalls When Treating Symptoms Rather Than The Root CauseChronic disease management is terribly unfulfilling.Doctors forget to talk to patients about the quality of the foods they eat. Plus, many doctors tell patients that saturated fat is bad and they should be drinking these plant-based garbage seed oils.Sadly, there isn’t enough time for doctors to talk with patients about nutrition.Cynthia’s patients opened her up to the possibility that maybe there were other alternatives or other ways of thinking about things rather than these medications. Many medications have sexual side effects – what 35-year-old would want erectile dysfunction? Unfortunately, our society is increasingly metabolically unstable and obese. Men can actually aromatize testosterone to estrogen.[43:50 Taking The Power Of Your Sex Life As You Get OlderYou have to schedule a time for intimacy. Also, intimacy can represent many different things.Intimacy doesn't have to mean penetrating sex, it could be like someone's g

Tame Your Hidden Dragon with Dr. Daniel Amen

Today, I am blessed to have Dr. Amen join the show. Dr. Amen has helped millions of people change their brains and lives through his health clinics, best-selling books, products, and public television programs.Dr. Amen is one of America’s leading psychiatrists and brain health experts. He has authored or coauthored 70 professional articles and more than 30 books, including New York Times mega-bestseller Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. He has appeared on numerous television shows, including Dr. Phil, Larry King, Dr. Oz, The Doctors, and The View.In this episode, Dr. Amen opens the show speaking about his work with SPECT brain imaging. He explains what sorts of things can affect our brain negatively, especially when it comes to smoking marijuana. On Dr. Amen’s journey, he’s gotten a lot of negativity directed at him from his peers. Luckily, he has learned to push through the negativity using his 18/40/60 principle. Tune in as we talk about how being a celebrity can affect the brain, and we discover what dragons are making you sad, mad, nervous, or out of control. Don’t forget to get Dr. Amen’s latest book, Your Brain Is Always Listening. [06:40] About Dr. Amen’s Work With SPECT Imaging  In the 1990s, Dr. Amen started using a study called  SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography). SPECT is a nuclear medicine study that looks at blood flow and activity to identify underlying brain issues that can contribute to symptoms accurately. It basically shows us three things:Good activityToo little activityToo much activitySPECT completely revolutionized how Dr. Amen treated his patients and how he treated himself. Dr. Amen came to realize that mental health was actually brain health – this realization changed everything! After working on people with substance abuse issues, Dr. Amen noticed that their scans just look terrible. So, Dr. Amen wanted to know what different drugs did to the brain. He took a healthy group and compared them to a marijuana group. In the marijuana group - every area of their brains was lower, particularly the hippocampus, which is the brain's major memory structure. What are the factors that accelerate aging in the brain? First, schizophrenia. Second, marijuana! If you smoke pot as a teenager, you have a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, and suicide in your 20s.[16:55] Pushing Through Negativity On Your Journey Dr. Amen has been able to push forward through all of the negativity in life. Sadly, so many people in his space talk down on him.It was quite the wild ride until he stopped paying attention to it.Early on, Dr. Amen realized there's not one kind of depression; there are seven kinds of depression. Based on imaging, there are seven types of ADD. Plus, there are six different types of addicts. These ideas are pushing against the status quo. Plus, some of the medications Dr. Amen was taught to prescribe were toxic for brain function! Sadly, people think Dr. Amen is crazy because he says you should not make diagnoses based on symptom clusters with no biological data. Dr. Amen says he doesn’t care if you like him or not anymore. Basically, if you’re a doctor and don't look at your patients' brains, then shame on you!“When I stopped paying attention to what people said about me, I just got so much happier.” -Dr. Amen[24:00] About The 18/40/60 Principle  When you're 18, you worry about what everybody is thinking of you; when you're 40, you don't give a darn what anybody thinks of you; when you're 60, you realize nobody’s  been thinking about you at all.People spend their days worrying and thinking about themselves, not you.If someone criticizes you, they're only thinking about it for a short period of time. Also, if someone is criticizing you, then they actually don't know you at all. [26:00] Brain Challenges For Celebrities  Celebrities suffer from high stress, especially when becoming famous at a young age like, Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus. Their pleasure centers get worn out. Your pleasure centers deepen the brain to an area in the basal ganglia called the nucleus accumbens; it responds to dopamine. When you're a worldwide star, you are getting a lot of dopamine production from people recognizing you and you signing big contracts. With child stars, this is before their brains are actually finished developing. The more dopamine that hits those pleasure centers, the more it deadens them.[29:00] The Importance of Delayed Gratification  Walter Mitchell is a professor at Stanford. He did this experiment with four-year-olds. Basically, the kids could agree to get a marshmallow now. However, if they can wait a little bit, then they would get two marshmallows. The kids that opted to wait to get more marshmallows were significantly more successful in virtually every area of their lives because they had impulse control

Optimize Your Health and Happiness with Adam Kramer

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, Adam Kramer. Adam Kramer helps businesses create connections that make them money. He is a senior-level business development executive with a keen entrepreneurial instinct and over twenty years of experience selling and building a service brand in the healthcare sector. In this episode, we jump right into the most significant ways in which Adam has been challenging himself recently. Adam reveals the crucial lessons that he has learned on his journey and some things you can implement into your own life. Later, we talk about Adam's work in the healthcare industry, including their up-and-coming innovative genetics test for Covid. Tune in as we speak about healthy living for cancer prevention, the healing power of nature, and the importance of staying present.[05:15] Adam’s Most Significant Challenges The biggest way that Adam has been challenging himself is by being strict with his routine. The other way that Adam has been challenging himself is by breaking things down into tiny habits. He likes to start small to make a big difference. For instance, Adam began small by doing ten pushups before his shower. Now, he is doing two-hundred pushups. [09:40] Important Lessons For Enjoying Your JourneyYou need to be grateful for your challenges and be thankful for everything that's happened in the past because it's brought you to where you are today.A key to enjoying your journey is to serve and help others. Another critical lesson to remember on your journey is that you should never harbor hard feelings for anyone. Overall, it doesn't serve you, and it doesn't serve them either. In fact, it will only set you back. Also, you can't hold everybody to the standard that you hold for yourself. Lastly, stop watching the news! Four years ago, Adam stopped watching the news. It has been a tremendous help for enjoying his journey. At the same time, Adam stopped talking negatively about other people - total life-changing habits! [19:35] What Adam Is Currently Working On Adam has been in the healthcare space for over twenty years. He says it’s incredible to see the impact that he has made on people's lives.Adam has always been super passionate about innovative healthcare. The stuff that he works with is on the cutting edge. After moving to Australia, Adam landed at a really innovative genetics company. Their company helps people get insight into their risk of developing certain diseases. That way, people can take action today to prevent them from ever coming up to the surface. [43:10] The Key To Surviving Cancer Early detection is the key to surviving cancer. For almost any cancer, when you catch it early, we have a medicine that can save your life. Cancer prevention goes back to perspective and consistency when it comes to our lifestyle habits. What you put in your mouth is in your microbiome. There is a direct correlation between diet and all these chronic diseases. Cancer eats sugar; that's the bottom line. If you cut off the source, then cancer will die.Eating right and having a healthy lifestyle is the biggest game-changer as far as cancer prevention goes.[52:20] Future Covid Testing Adam and his team are working on a Covid test that will tell you how bad you will be if you get Covid. The test will also predict if you'll end up in the hospital or not.In Melbourne, everyone is locked up. However, only 5% of people really need to be locked up. Lock up has devasting health impacts and economic impacts. We need to get back to work! Hopefully, this test will be a solution. When we know who is at high risk, we can prioritize the vaccine.[55:20] Educating Children About Healthy Eating  You don’t need to force your children to eat healthy foods. Instead, you should be a role model and eat healthily. When we set an example, we don’t need all these different laws in place. For instance, sodas in schools. Yes, our children shouldn’t be drinking soda. However, are the adults in their life drinking soda? Children need healthy role models! Leading by example is the key to a healthier planet. [66:40] Ways of Living an Authentic Life  Face your fears and stop caring about what other people think! This is who you are, and it’s not going to change.Use your knowledge and help other people. There is goodness in everyone, and it's just about unlocking it. We have so much potential that people don't even realize. There are tools that help you realize your full potential and your max potential – use them!We have one life to live; we should live it to the max. [72:20] Nature Is The Best Medicine  Nature is the best medicine; that is where all healing comes from. Sadly, we haven't even discovered all of it.We don't know what's in the ocean! Every day we're discovering new species and new things that we had no clue about. Everything is really in nature; w

Man Boobs, Gary Vee, and Fitness With Jordan Syatt

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Jordan Syatt. Jordan Syatt is a short, bald, Harry Potter nerd with an affinity for deadlifting and also happened to be Gary Vaynerchuk's personal trainer.Jordan began Syatt Fitness, his online fitness coaching business, from his dorm at the University of Delaware in 2011 and has become one of the industry’s leading experts in strength training, nutrition, and behavioral psychology. One of the only people in the world to deadlift 4x his own body weight, Jordan's work has been featured all over the world, including a variety of media publications such as CNN, The Huffington Post, Business Insider, Men's Health Magazine, Men’s Fitness Magazine, and Schwarzenegger.com.In this episode, Jordan opens the show explaining how he ended up being the personal trainer for Gary Vaynerchuk. With a lot of hard work and a little luck, Jordan coached Gary for seven days a week, three years straight. Overworking and a lack of sleep led Jordan to feel insecure about his body. We dive into those insecurities and how Jordan overcame them. Plus, we discuss Jordan's decision to attend therapy and the importance of mental health, especially when overwhelmed by social media. Tune in as we talk about which health tools are overrated and which health tools are underrated.[04:00] About Jordan Syatt Jordan started his website in college to make content and write articles. For the first six months to almost a year, Jordan only got 20 views a day on his website. In 2012, Jordan wrote an article about improving posture while sitting at your desk. A stranger at the time, Mike, asked a question on the article, and Jordan responded. Down the road, Mike becomes Gary Vaynerchuk’s personal trainer. Gary needed help with his posture, so Mike recommended Jordan for the job! You never know who is going to come across your content. [11:00] The Importance of Content CreationIt’s super cool that Jordan can say he coaches Gary Vaynerchuk. What’s not something that he talks about is the countless hours and hours of work he put into his website creating content. When everyone was partying in college, Jordan was writing articles for his website. Sadly, his mom was the only one reading them for a long time. However, because of this content creation, Jordan found Gary Vaynerchuk.[12:35] Jordan’s Time With Gary VaynerchukWhen Jordan coached Gary, his time was Gary's time for seven days a week, three years straight. Jordan didn’t have weekends, he didn’t get breaks, and he didn’t get vacations. Because of this, Jordan couldn’t keep his fitness and eating routines. Instead, he was eating at the airport, barely sleeping, and losing muscle mass. Eventually, Jordan became uncomfortable in his own body. Plus, Jordan wasn’t able to build relationships with other people because he was constantly working.[16:00] All About Body ImageEverybody struggles with body image – even people who we consider beautiful and handsome. We have no idea what other people are going through despite their outer appearance. Every person has a story that happened to them as a kid that they'll always remember. These stories will shape our mental & emotional habits and thoughts around who we are today. For Jordan, a girl in sixth grade said that he had “manboobs.” We all have mini traumas that we kind of brushed under the rug. However, these traumas have informed our belief systems and our identities. [20:15] The Decision To Attend Therapy If you’re thinking about therapy, Jordan says to do it! Therapy has completely changed Jordan’s life, and he is incredibly grateful for it. Anxiety was the most significant reason that Jordan wanted to go to therapy. Jordan always thought that the more followers you had on social media, the happier you must be. However, he realized that is not how happiness works. A huge anxiety for Jordan is cancel culture – he’s worried about losing it all. Ultimately, Jordan realized that worrying isn’t going to help anything. [27:05] Tips On Repurposing Content  Anytime someone has a question, they go to Google, and they search it. They’re not going to find Instagram posts or TikTok videos. Instead, they’ll find articles and YouTube videos. So, consider writing articles on the content that you have on Instagram and TikTok. Jordan can take a tweet that he wrote and eventually have enough content for a YouTube video. [32:00] Overrated or Underrated: Intermittent FastingIntermittent fasting is overrated. You can eat breakfast and still lose fat; intermittent fasting is not going to be the savior for fat loss.It can be a useful tool, but it’s not necessary! [33:45] Overrated or Underrated: Ice BathsFor fat loss, ice baths are overrated. In general, ice baths are underrated. Health and fat loss are two different things. You get more of a dopamine hit from an ice bath than you do from
