Lourin Hubbard was born in Central Valley, the son of a single black working-class mother who was an admitting clerk for a local hospital and a union representative for SEIU-UHW in Bakersfield. Lourin’s mom struggled to raise two children amid the skyrocketing costs of housing, transportation and health care. His mother worked 10-12 hours days and the family required food stamps to survive. Unforutnatley, Lourin’s mom struggled with chronic high blood pressure and other health problems her entire life, and without consistent access to health care she died at the age of 50.
