Today we will focus on some common Russian abbreviations which you may frequently meet in your daily Russian communication. 

Сегóдня мы уделúм внимáние нéкоторым общеупотреби́тельным рýсским аббревиатýрам, котóрые вы чáсто мóжете встрéтить в повседнéвном общéнии на рýсском языкé. 

By the way, the word of the day is уделúть внимáние, or to focus on. Literally, it is translated as to give attention to. Another useful collocation is уделúтьврéмя, т.е., to give time to smth.

Кстáти, слóвом сегóдняшнего дня явля́ется уделúть внимáние, или to focus on. Буквáльноэто перевóдится как to give attention. Другóе полéзное сочетáние - уделúть врéмя, т.е., to give time to smth. 

But let us return to our today's topic of the lesson.

Let us start with defining what abbreviation is. 

Давáйте начнём с тогó, что определúм, что такóе аббревиатýра. 

Abbreviation is a shortened form of a written word or phrase. 

Аббревиатýра - это укорóченная фóрма пúсьменного слóва или фрáзы. 

The main source of abbreviations comes from the shortened names of organizations:

International organizations (междунарóдные организáции)

Основно́й исто́чник аббревиату́р происхо́дит от укоро́ченных наименова́ний организа́ций

UN (the United Nations)

ООН (Организâция Объединённых Нaций) 

NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
