Marcello Rodante, Brazil - Integrative Lawyers of the World, Series 3, Episode 2
Marcello Rodante is the co-founder of the Brazilian Institute of Collaborative Law. He believes approaching conflict in less antagonistic ways can help us learn and become better people. To help guide clients and peers through this transformation, he continues to study new ways to expand his practice toolkit. Methods such as spiral dynamics, Conscious Contracts, and non-defensive communication are integrated into his existing practice, honoring the value of the traditional with the benefits of the new. In our second episode of Series 3 of Integrative Lawyers of the World, we talk to Mr. Rodante about his journey from hard-edge litigator to integrative and collaborative attorney, the hurdles and struggle with peers and the public during this transition, and the importance of learning new disciplines and approaches to blend with traditional ways. Show Notes
In this conversation, we discussed:
- His journey from litigator, hard-edge lawyer to an integrative and collaborative approach
- A resistance from peers, clients, and public opinion to new approaches to law because people want (or think they want) the hard-edge, cut-throat, beat-up-the-other-side type lawyer. Even though changing his practice to be more aligned with himself has been a positive experience, there were times when it was lonely and difficult.
- Making the paradigm shift to a culture of peace
- Conflict Resolution
- Spiral Dynamics
- Non-Defensive Communication
- The importance of learning disciplines and approaches
- What being an integrative lawyer means to him
Quote:
“When you understand that conflict is part of human beings, part of the human experience, then you can work on conflict differently to learn, and to try to become a better person.”
- Marcello Rodante
