Ep 20Nicky Spinks: You can do more than you think
It was such an honour to interview British fell runner Nicky Spinks for this episode. Nicky is a 53-year old wife, British farmer and she loves a good curry. Sounds pretty normal, doesn’t it? So let’s try that sentence again. Nicky is a 53-year old record breaking British ultra-distance runner who is the overall record holder for the Double Bob Graham round, became the first person EVER to complete doubles of the Paddy Buckley and Charlie Ramsey round too… That was AFTER being diagnosed with Breast cancer at the age of 39. You'll hear: *A long interview with Nicky about her background in running and farming, why office life wasn’t for her, why she is chomping at the bit to return to the Barkley Marathons, how she forms her support team, how she survives on ten minutes sleep over three days, how she vowed never to do another race after her first ever 10km, her love of spicy curry, how she got into skydiving, the impact cancer has had on her life and outlook and why she almost ditched the double Bob Graham round attempt before she had even left the car park. *An update from British triathlete David McNamee, who is on lock down in Girona. He talks about the impact the restrictions are having on him, why he’s following the rules to a T, why Magnums are the new croissants...And trying to run on his 7m balcony. Like the show? Ep 19Michelle Vesterby: Keep Smiling
My aim is to pop a smile on your face this week, as well as help you through being stuck inside during the Coronavirus. You'll hear: *An update from David McNamee, who is on lock down in Girona. He gives a fascinating insight into his training, his day to day life, the harsh reality of what's going on around him. Plus the latest on his croissant intake, his Catalan learning and his chamois cream supplies. *An interview with Michelle Vesterby. The Dane came 4th at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2015 and last year, she raced at Ironman Copenhagen just 3 months after giving birth to her son. If you’ve ever seen interviews with Michelle, or watched her race in person, you’ll know she often has a grin on her face too. She lives by the motto “Keep Smiling,“ which we talk about a lot. Part of it goes back to her older brother, who sadly died at the age of 26, but she says he always used to smile and be happy. So we talk about mindset, positivity and trying not to worry. *The most incredible piece of writing in audio form, which might ease your worries and some of your anxieties at the moment if you can't get outdoors. Ep 18David McNamee, Evie Serventi, Dermott Hayes and Tom Davis: Uncertain times & new opportunities
In the space of a few days the way we live our lives has totally changed. Our short term future suddenly feels very much up in the air and there's huge long-term uncertainty too. For many, worrying about races and triathlon goals has become almost irrelevant. Your health and that of those around you or figuring out how you might pay the mortgage in a couple of month's time becomes far more significant than whether you'll get the sh*ts during an Ironman. But for some, triathlon is their livelihood. It's how they make a living, indeed how they pay their mortgage. For others, endurance sport is their key to staying sane. Training is their socialising. Their local triathlon club is their family. Goals give focus and purpose to their day to day life. But suddenly, when all of that is taken away, life becomes very very different. In this episode you'll hear: *Sports Psychologist Evie Serventi who has some great advice on trying to get your head around recent events, staying calm, finding new opportunities and learning to enjoy the process of training again *2x Kona Podium finisher, David McNamee joins us from his base in Girona, Spain, where he is locked down in his apartment for at least 14 days. If you can get on your bike outside, please send him your photos to motivate him and p*ss him off!!! *For up and coming professional Tom Davis, no racing means less income. He's having to consider whether he will he have to move back in with his parents. *And Race organiser and coach Dermott Hayes from Be endurance gives us the view from a small race organiser and full time coach. With camps, training and races cancelled, he's concerned about the next few months and also explains why refunds aren't always possible for small race organisers and why they are going virtual with their cancelled "Storm the Castle" duathlon. Non Stanford has been involved in and surrounded by sport for her entire life. She was destined for big things on the track and was 3x Welsh Schools 1500m champion, before being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes. But injuries took their toll and Non made a successful transition into triathlon. She moved to Leeds and in 2012, she was crowned U23 World Champion. Just a year later, she became ITU World Champion. But Non has had her fair share of ups and downs since. 2014 was wiped out by injury, in 2016, she finished 4th behind GB teammate Vicky Holland at the Rio Olympics. At the end of 2018 Non left the Leeds set up to join Joel Filliol’s squad. INTERVIEW TIME LINE* (not the whole episode) 1.00 – How Bristol to Beijing ride came about – 23,000km across 24 countries on a tandem. 3.30 Talks about being diagnosed with cancer in June 2018, while he was teaching English in Siberia. Prior to his diagnosis, he was in the peak of his health, at peak fitness. 09.40 Describes what his treatment schedule has been like. 10.30 Talks about how he trained through his chemo. 12.00 Every time I went into hospital, I cycled my bike in. And I also set my turbo up. It wasn’t about the exercise, but it was about the attitude I was bringing to the situation. 15.00 Luke talks about winning a duathlon the day after finishing his radiotherapy. 20.00 The difficulty with all of this is that I feel great and I am having a fantastic adventure, and I am in remission, but it doesn’t really mean all that much. With the type of cancer I have, there are no guarantees but so far, I have done a lot better than the doctors thought I would. 20.51 The day I was diagnosed, I went for a run with my Dad and I remember chatting to him and he gave me some advice that meant a lot to me then and I have tried to take it to heart as much as possible. “We can’t control when we die, but we can control how we live today and hopefully how we live tomorrow and that’s what I try to aim to do on each and every day and that’s the most important thing. My personal ethos is not simply wait for opportunities to come along, but proactively go and create the opportunities you want to make your life as rich and fulfilling as possible. So go and create those unique opportunities for yourself, take a risk and do it. 24.30 Talks about the tragic death of his older brother John, who sadly died in an accident in 2018 and Luke explains about a phone call he got at 4am on the final day of his first cycle of chemotherapy and he found out that his brother had fallen to his death in the Lake District. 28.30 Talks about the money he is raising through the ride. “The most important thing is to change the way people live. Of course, I have no control over that, but this is what has worked for me and by having other young people and other Can Livers on the back, that is the clearest way I can think of sending a message saying “If time is short, live your life to the full, these people are doing it and you can too.” Learn more about your ad choices. Long gone are the long, boozy Friday lunches, the 7 day working weeks in the office and the daily packet of cigarettes! We go pretty deep in the interview, but Renee is ridiculously open and honest and she reveals she still struggles with her body image. You'll hear: *The 'lightbulb moment' that made her start to change her life around *How she ran on the treadmill and avoided the pool at busy times when she first started exercising, for fear of what others would say *The lessons she's taken from the business world into the triathlon domain and vice versa *Her struggles with body image and disordered eating Like what you heard? Ep 7Pete Jacobs: Find what works for you
2012 Ironman World Champion Pete Jacobs is a fascinating person to both interview and listen to. Pete was originally a landscape gardener before he became a professional athlete at the age of 21. He won in Kona when he was 30, by which point he had done an incredible 30 Ironman races, including finishing 2nd in 2011 and recording the 3rd fastest marathon in the race’s history with a 2h41m05 in 2010. After 2012, he was very public about his on-going battle with fatigue, something he has dealt with since he was a teenager. He’s had loads of tests done and he has tried various different diets to reduce inflammation from foods and he is currently a strict carnivore – his diet is JUST meat. You'll hear: *Why training LESS helped him to become World Champion *If a meat only diet leaves him constipated *His advice for staying mentally strong and focussed on good run technique during the run leg of a triathlon. *His hopes to get back to the pointy end of racing. You can make your own mind up about whether you agree with what he says or not, but the message to take from it is we are all different and the training and diet that works for one person, might not be right for you and comparing yourself to others is pretty pointless. INTERVIEW TIME LINE* *Interview times, not the whole episode 0:00:40 – meet George Peasgood introduction to his swim set, a typical Thursday, a typical week. 0:02.15 – George says he never has a day off as that is what works for him. 18-high 20hrs a week. But there is really no such thing as a typical week. 0:03:00 – George explains how he has developed a love for cycling and that he continues to work on his run 0:04:20 – Lead coach Adam Elliot – most of them will swim 5 times a week – around 25km/week, some add a 6th session in. If they are injured they might add a 7th or 8th swim in or put a couple of double swims in. There is a session in each week which ticks one of the mental, physiological or mechanical demands of race day of what they have to deliver on race day. We would either split lanes on ability or necessity of what someone is working on, so we might have more of a speed or strength orientated set. 0:06:45 explains what a typical day looks like for him as a coach 0:07:55 Adam explains the nature of the swim squad at Loughborough. 0:08:30 talks through the land based conditioning room, that athletes often go into 15 minutes before their swim session. 0:09:20 George reflects on his swim session and explains what he eats before and after swimming 0:10:45 Interview with Jonathan Riall – Head Coach of the British Paratriathlon programme. Explains the idea behind Thursday Breakfast club, which they have held every Thursday since 2014- it’s an opportunity for everyone to get together, integrate some of the younger athletes and builds good relationships. 0:31:30 – Breakfast chat with George Peasgood at the Elite Athlete Hotel in Loughborough. George explains how he got into triathlon, following his family into it. "I came to a talent ID day in 2011 and found out I was classifiable and after A Levels, Loughborough seemed the obvious choice. For as long as I am a Paralympic triathlete, I will be here." 0:49:15 – At the gym with Para Tri guide Nikki Bartlett. And how even she can feel intimidated when she is just getting back into the early season s+c sessions. The programme is heavy weight lifting, few reps. She has an S+C session which is completely individualised to each athlete. "I need more upper body to lower and I respond better to heavy weights." 0:59:30 Lunch and interview with 4x Paralympian Claire Cashmore who started swimming when she was 12 years old and went to her first Paralympics at the age of 16, but switched to Para Triathlon after the Rio Olympics. Admits that ‘swimming is quite boring’ but she loves the variety of triathlon and the fact you can see a lot of the countries you go to and you can actually talk! Learn more about your ad choices.
