Ep 66Fran Brown: Insanely interesting, insanely talented
She's played for Brian May, she's been involved in the Queen's Christmas Broadcast, she's been a Paraclimbing World Champion, she's had to re-learn how to walk and she's taught herself how to run. If that isn't enough, she's also a Paratriathlon World Champion. Yet this still only scratches the surface of the remarkable British Paratriathlete, Fran Brown. You'll hear: 07:45 Her amazing and very varied background in music and sport 16:25 How she went about re-learning how to walk and stand, following her spinal cord injury when she was working as a lighting technician in the West End. 22:50 Fran explains how she returned to climbing, even though she thought it was impossible and how she progressed to being multiple World Champion "I started climbing again, even though I thought it was impossible at the time" 32:30 How a talent ID day at British Triathlon opened the doors for Fran. I was swimming, I was cycling and I thought 'running can't be that hard' 34:30 The measures Fran went to in order to teach herself how to run. "Try it, film it. I can't learn by feeling, I have to learn by watching" I can walk very fast or I can run but I'm too imbalanced to go at that in between speed. I fell over loads basically. "I was on the team for 2 years before I could run a 5km without a walk break" 40:33 Her hatred of the words can't or shouldn't. "If I think there is a tiny chance I can, I will still try. What's the worst that can happen?" 46:15 Her Paralympic hopes, even though she hasn't been in a pool for a year because she is on the clinically vulnerable list. My focus is training and it gives me the structure I need. 51:40 Being diagnosed with Crohn's disease and having surgery in August 2020 and a stoma fitted. "As much as I didn't want a stoma fitted initially, it's actually really helped." "Define bad. I see it as a challenge I can learn from." We catch up with British professional Fenella Langridge who always has a smile on her face and lives with her coach and partner Billy in her Mum's pub in the south of England. Fenella admits she can be quite shy but she's loads of fun when you get chatting to her and she has a heart of gold. She finished 7th at Challenge Daytona in 2020 and she trains in the pool in Bath alongside Olympian Vicky Holland and fellow pro India Lee. "I'm the feeder, so I take that responsibility and I'm proud of that" 17:05 We talk about Fenella's love of crafts and baking 19:38 Fenella on relaxing and recovery. "It has taken a lot to just sit down and do nothing. If you need that mental release, then going out for a walk is fine, but if you need to recover for the next session, get your arse on that sofa and sit down. Accepting it and knowing it's the right thing to do and it's part of what we have chosen to do" 26:17 We talk about how Fenella brings Strength and Conditioning into her training programme "It's always been a key part of our training and that's been really present with Billy and his principles. At the end of the day if you want to be fast, you have to be strong and powerful. It's even more prevelent for older athletes for general health and bone health. We do two sessions a week and then a general session too. " 41:47 We touch on finances "I think I've broken even this year. It's not a lucrative career to be in" Find out more about this week's guest - Fenella Langridge Fenella Langridge Instagram Like what you heard? Let me know! "I will be in school for another five years which is overwhelming but it's worth it. I am really interested by the subject matter and there is a clear goal in mind , to get my doctorate, so I can start working with patients." 17:23 Her belief that triathlon is actually a mis-fit for her 18:36 Why talking so openly about her own mental health struggles has helped her as an athlete. 25:52 Why she didn't race in Daytona and isn't a member of the PTO. 40:42 Sarah talks about what happened at Ironman Frankfurt when she collapsed just before the finish line. Helen gets beyond the normal questions and answers with Mark and really finds out what makes him tick. You'll hear: 17:25 the idea of identity and individuality and encouraging youngsters to pursue their passions and not feel like they HAVE to conform. "That ability to commit to the things that interest you is far more important than the specifics of the sport you did" 27:25 Mark talks really well about the feeling of a void at a finish point of a big expedition or adventure and the greatest emotion of getting there is 'a bloody relief'. "The elation and happiness is often given for those around you so I find the finish line bizarre. Maybe it's too much." 28:15 When you finish a challenge, you don't change, but you quite often change in the eyes of other people and I don't think that helps you return to normality 34:49 If you don't have periods in your life, when you have a natural flow of arrows going in and arrows going out, I think you can end up a pretty unhappy person, because I think you lose that purpose and that connection in life. 35:34 If you are having a bad day, you're feeling sorry for yourself, things are going wrong, just do something that makes the arrows go back out the other way. 40:30 How do you cycle around the world in 80 days? "All that matters is ruthless consistency" 33:08 We talk about the idea of loneliness on long challenges. "It's ultimately a huge amount of time in your own head." 46:05 Sleep deprivation, cognitive function and emotions during long, record breaking endurance feats. "I definitely saw sides of my character that I didn't know existed" 50:10 - What's the Mark like on his adventures compared to the Mark with his mates or with his kids 53:23 We find out which stretch of road in the world Mark would most like to ride again and what's coming out of his headphones Find out more about this week's guest - Mark Beaumont Mark Beaumont Instagram Mark on Twitter Mark Beaumont website Mark's new book - How to cycle further Like what you heard? Dave Scott is a 6x Ironman World Champion and I thought this interview was going to be all about mindset and a winning mentality. I had many periods when this depression would manifest itself." 31:08 "I thought if I was depressed, that is a huge psychological weakness and there is no way I can race Ironman and win it again. It scared me that I could never dig myself out of it, because really it was just denial." 34:10 Dave offers some advice to stay focussed in a race: "Do what you can do in the moment, be in the present." 42:08 Dave gives his reaction to losing the World Championships in 1989 to Mark Allen, in Iron War. Ep 43Mike Taylor: How to stop getting saddle sores and a numb penis!
Think you need all the gear to go faster? Think again! In this episode, learn how to spend smarter and go faster on a bike this week, with expert bike fitter Mike Taylor. If you've ever struggled with saddle sores or a numb penis, if you're debating whether you should buy a time trial bike or if you want to know how to really keep your bike clean, but you've never wanted to ask, then this is the episode for you! The amazing Mike Taylor joins me to talk about: 11:44 Become a bike fitting specialist 12:56 "The biggest barrier to most people doing long distance stuff is their position" 15:25 "My aim when I go into a bike fit is to make someone faster, more aerodynamic, more powerful and WAY more comfortable" 17:51 "Once you're above 25 mph, the key to speed is aerodynamics" 19:48 "I wouldn't build a super aero position for someone trying to go from 25kph to 28 kph, there's just no point. What you need to do is open up their power and allow them to maintain it for hours on end" 20:26 "It's like we see people turning up with disc wheels and their output is 17-18mph. If it makes them feel good, fine, but it's not making them go faster." 21:02 Helen asks Mike: 'What is the best investment to go quicker?' 23:53 Helen asks Mike: 'Do you need a time trial bike to do triathlon?' 27:30 "Learning how to check your chain is the best gift I can give to the triathlon and cycling community" 28:28 Mike talks about the ideal tyre pressure 31:20 Helen asks Mike: 'How do you clean a bike properly?' 33:35 "It is possible to be comfortable on a saddle" 36:18 "Athletes are still super quick, but in agony" 37:19 "I'm always blown away by how much discomfort a lot of female athletes put up with because they think that's what cycling is." 37:35 "With male athletes, you can have penile numbness and there are so many horrible things that people put down as normal and it really isn't. You get a good saddle and you don't even think about it." 42:08 "You can get some real issues around shorts and chamois" 44:14 Talks about doing a bike fit remotely with Meredith Kessler Find out more about this week's guest Mike Taylor website Mike Taylor Instagram Mike Taylor Twitter Also this week... 03:12 Dan Braddock from Shrewsbury Tri shares his 'Tri Sharing Wisdom'. Ep 36Rach McBride: Being gender non-binary in triathlon
I have oodles of respect for Canada's Rach McBride for doing this interview. Rach is an incredible triathlete and a really educated and interesting person who you can talk to on so many levels, whether you want to chat triathlon, genetics, music or anything else. Rach also identifies as gender non-binary. That means they don't identify as male or female. Or put another way, they don't follow other people's ideas or stereotypes about how they should look or act, based on the sex they were assigned at birth. It is an emotional listen, it is a powerful episode, but I truly believe we can only understand more about other people by talking to them, allowing them to speak out and listening to their stories. I hope this helps Rach and so many others.
