We are into week three which was technically marks the beginning Big Ten conference play. It also ofters a spicy weekend of nonconference matchups with another dose of games that look to be laughers. The headliner of the weekend if a rematch of last year's season-opening barnburner, with Texas A&M making a return trip to South Bend to take on Notre Dame. The Aggies desperately seek a validating win under second-year coach Mike Elko to catapult them firmly into the playoff discussion prior to SEC play. On the other sideline, Marcus Freeman's squad needs a win to avoid an 0-2 start for the second time in four years. Elsewhere in nonconference action, Wisconsin makes a return trip south to Alabama. Billy Edwards appears to be OUT for this contest; can backup Danny O'Neil continue to spark the Badgers's offense against a much tougher opponent? After a wildly notable week 1 that featured two top-10 matchups among midwest teams, week 2 lacks similar star power. But plenty of interesting matchups abound, including a trio of games that can begin to shape the playoff cases for several teams inside (and outside) the Big Ten.The headliner of the weekend features a coach in need of a signature win to validate his vision for his program, vs a coach in need of a signature win to cool down his hot seat. Sherrone Moore and Michigan head to Norman, Oklahoma to take on Brent Venables's Sooners. In fact, since 2005, six of Iowa State's seven wins in this game have been by three points or fewer. The first weekend of the college football season is (mostly) in the books, and on a day that featured many contests featuring contenders against overmatched teams, there were still plenty of storylines and narratives abound.In Columbus, the defending national champions defeated Texas for the second time in three games in a defensive slug fest that was equal parts impressive and enlightening. Since that 2023 season, his squad is 15-11 overall, including a 4-5 mark in their first season of Big Ten play in 2024. What is the tenor of the fanbase around its head coach heading into 2025? Has a monster 2026 recruiting class bought him some goodwill? Or is his seat starting to get warm?Riley has made his name with offense, particularly with QB development. Last season he pivoted from Miller Moss to Jayden Maiava after nine games. He moved the ball well but did not offer much better protection of it -- throwing six interceptions in his four starts. Will Maiava have a longer leash than Moss had in 2024? Out wide, the Trojans are bolstered by WRs Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane, but must replace six of their next seven leading receivers in WR transfers Duce Robinson, Zach Branch and Kyron Hudson; RB transfer Quentin Joyner; and the graduations of WR Kyle Ford and RB Woody Marks ... who are a few skill position players we can expect to hear from stepping up in 2025?On the defensive side of the ball, USC's defense improved from 119th in total defense and 121st in scoring defense in 2023, to 77th and 56th, respectively, in 2024 (an improvement of nearly 60 fewer yards and 10 fewer points per game allowed). Ryan and Clinton hit the homestretch touching on their first looks at the Big Ten in 2025, with Rutgers and Northwestern next up. Rutgers had high expectations in 2024, mostly mediated by what was viewed as an exceptionally favorable schedule. The Scarlet Knights were still able to attain a bowl berth -- a 44-41 loss to Kansas State -- but a 7-5 regular season felt like something was left on the table. Injuries decimated this defense a year ago, and much of the defensive backfield has graduated. Will a bevy of transfer portal additions help shore up a unit that was 70th in scoring defense a year ago? Or will a schedule that features three likely preseason top-10 teams be too much to handle?The Lakehouse returns for an encore in 2025 for Northwestern, but the Wildcats are hoping this year brings more success than last's 4-8 campaign.
