Episode 1: The New Indie Business Podcast
I launched my podcast in 2005 as the Lifestyle CEO Show. I later changed the name to Indie Business Podcast, and ultimately hosted a weekly show over 300 times between 2005 and 2012. As technology progressed from the Dark Ages, I switched my podcast from the now defunct Global Talk Radio to Blog Talk Radio. This business arrangement did not work out as well as I thought it would, so earlier this year, I set up a self-hosted blogging platform, and have been in the re-creative process since then. It took a while, but today, I am thrilled to announce the new Indie Business Podcast. Click the arrow to Listen “ Same podcast. Same focus. New format. ” Donna Maria, Indie Business Network In iTunes, this episode is the first episode right at the top. Season 1, Episode 1: Show Notes Makers and Handmade Entrepreneurs are the stars of the show. My new podcast format makes YOU the star of the show. I loved interviewing authors and celebrities under the old former, but now, my focus is on sharing the best business models, insights, and tips from Makers nationwide. You'll enjoy being a fly on the wall as I pick their brains for everything from makes them tick, to what makes their cash registers ring. Each episode will be about 30-minutes long. For years, the podcast was 60 minutes long. That seemed so logical at the time, but today, you are business than ever so my intent will be to give you 30 minutes that are jam packed with information you can use in your business right now. It will be the perfect amount of time to get a quick burst of creative inspiration on your morning run or while you commute to and from work. The podcast will be produced in “seasons”. Podcasting may appear to be easy from the outside looking in, but it's not. A podcast requires a huge commitment and a lot of behind the scenes work. In hindsight, I see that I burned myself out by podcasting every week for so many years without taking a break. I will avoid that this time by producing the podcast in seasons — just like they do on television. Each Season will include 12 episodes, and I'll take a break for a few weeks before starting a new season. I'm excited about this because I can use the break to *get* a break, and to have time to improve the show without having to rush. I'll include a Q+A segment. Most episodes will conclude with listener questions. I'm really excited about this because it is an easy way for you to have a chance to pick my brain about any topic having to do with entrepreneurship. You can use the app below from your smart phone or laptop to ask a question right now! Tell me your name, your business website (so I can promote you!), and be as specific as possible with your question. As you can see, I'll include a link to your website if we use your question on the show. This is a great way to get a cross promotional inbound link to your site, while enjoying complimentary expert help with your business. Listener Questions Cathy at Prairie Zen Botanicals asked: “What are the top things one should think about and/or do when considering opening a retail store?” Lisa Buteux of Comfort and Joy Soap asked: “I send my newsletter out when I have a sale, about 3 times a year. I'm afraid that sending more will fill up people's inboxes too much. How do you send more newsletters without people unsubscribing?” Ask a Question! I love hearing from you and helping you solve your most pressing business problems NOW. If you have a question, use the app below to leave it on our voice mail. If I use your question on an episode, I will link to your site as I provide complimentary advice to help you use your business to create the life you love. Your Feedback Please! I'm staring with my February 20, 2006 with Paula Deen, when my podcast was called the Lifestyle CEO Show. Today, Paula Deen is bouncing back from controversy after a tough several months. She recently told People Magazine, “I'm fighting to get my name back.” In this episode of Indie Business Podcast, you'll hear the spitfire “no quit” attitude that is helping Paula bounce back today. While this podcast is dated, it is chock full of nuggets of advice and encouragement to entrepreneurs, particularly to women in business. Paula tells the story of how she transformed a $200 gift from her former husband into a successful restaurant, a string of New York Times best sellers and more. “ My first business plan was, ‘I made the sandwiches and my son's delivered them.' ” Paula Deen, Author, entrepreneur, celebrity chef, restauranteur To make sure you catch every episode of Indie Business Podcast, I encourage you to subscribe via iTunes so you can take the show anytime on the go! Episode 9 Show Notes How Paula pulled herself out of a 20-year run with agoraphobia. At age 40, as a marriage of 27 years was coming to an end, Paula felt like she was going to die. She knew she had to change her life, so, she picked herelf up and did just that. Not only did she dream of The Bag Lady, her first business, but on June 19, 1989, she gave birth to it. The biggest sin is not to have tried at all, says Paula. How Paula self-published her first book (and how Random House picked it up). After being in business for 8 years, Paula decided she needed to write a book, and she had saved up $20,000 for the job. You will love hearing the story of how her self-published book was picked up by Random House. This is one of the best examples of serendipity I have ever heard. (See how Clint Eastwood fits in too …) Paula's keys to success for women in business. Think outside the box, and have a business plan. Here is the one Paula started with: “I made the sandwiches and my sons delivered them.” Don't you love that? How do you transform a small Texas soapmaking venture into a non-profit powerhouse that changes lives around the globe? It was not a part of Amanda Gail's original plan, but it's happening as we speak. In fact, Amanda and her team will board a flight within hours of the publication of this podcast, to empower women in earthquake-wrecked Haiti to grow a soapmaking business there. No matter what kind of Maker you are, or what kind of artisan business you have, you can add a philanthropic angle that helps others benefit from your success. This podcast contains super insights to inspire you to use your business to uplift others, and it's fun to hear how Amanda and her team birthed Lovin' Soap Project out of nothing — which is what entrepreneurs do. To make sure you catch every episode, I encourage you to subscribe via iTunes so you can take Indie Business Podcast with you wherever you go! Episode 8 Show Notes How Amanda started her soapmaking business. How this self-described “serial crafter” transformed herself into an entrepreneur. Follow your passion to start a non-profit of your own. We have water and electricity and many luxuries, but Amanda and her team do not have that when they go to Haiti. Make sure you love what you are doing so you have the energy to juggle the difficulties and logistics in the area where you will be offering your services. Assess your resources. If you want to teach people how to make things in their own country, you may be limited by the resources available to you in-country. What resources are available to you? Are they affordable? Can you import necessary supplies, or find donors to supply them for you? Build a community. Amanda would not be successful without the donations and support of the Lovin' Soap community, so she shares super insights into the importance of building community around your efforts. Amanda shares how you can join her community, and play a role in helping the women of Haiti. Episode 8 Resources In this episode, I mentioned several resources, including: Lovin' Soap Project online: Lovin' Soap Project website and on Facebook Event: IndieCruise Non-Profit: OFEDA Haiti is the organization that the Lovin' Soap Project has partnered with to deliver services to Haiti.
