Independent Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun, candid perspective you won’t find anywhere else in the media. Guest Ken Feinberg is a master of disaster. He’s a leader who has been asked multiple times, by multiple Presidents, to do the impossible: to determine the dollar value of a human life after an unimaginable tragedy. From Agent Orange after Vietnam, to 9/11, to the BP oil spill, to the Boston Marathon bombing, to the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, to the Sandy Hook massacre, now, to the church sexual assault scandals and the opioid epidemic, Ken has been tasked with the mammoth assignment of determining the worth of an individual life. He is the author of What Is Life Worth?: The Inside Story of the 9/11 Fund and Its Effort to Compensate the Victims of September 11th and Who Gets What: Fair Compensation after Tragedy and Financial Upheaval, was profiled in the documentary Playing God, and will be played by actor Michael Keaton in the upcoming Netflix film, Worth. The movie---the first feature film presented by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions with Netflix--explores Ken’s leadership in administering the unprecedented $7 billion Victims Compensation Fund for 5,300 people. Worth also stars Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan and premieres on Netflix later this year on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Ken Feinberg is a voice of reason, a conscience, a mediator and a uniquely independent leader on the American political stage. And a voice we need now more than ever. Ken joins his former student, our host and 9/11-First Responder, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a thoughtful and candid conversation about the calls for a 9/11-style January 6th Commission, the appointment of Merrick Garland to lead the Dept of Justice, whether or not there will be civil lawsuits after the attack on the Capitol, how to lead in times of partisanship, and how to face pain in life. And, of course, what he drinks, his first car, and how he got to where he is in life. America is more divided, more angry, and more violent than ever before. But Independent Americans is adding light to contrast the heat. Ep 101101. Evan McMullin. The Independent Presidential Candidate on the Future of Independent Politics. The CIA Veteran Breaks Down the Insurrection. The Former GOP Strategist Analyzes the Impeachment and Destruction of the Party He Once Served.
Welcome to Season 2. Yep, we’ve changed the name of the show. For 100 episodes, we were united in our understandable anger. We were united in highlighting for others issues that had us angry--and should have everyone angry. And we were united in turning that anger into positive impact. That positive impact inspired action, supported legislation, elevated courageous voices, united people of all backgrounds, drove change--and left you entertained and inspired. But in the last few weeks, much has changed. Much has improved. And much has gotten worse. And so much has been twisted and manipulated. Including anger. The anger of many people of all backgrounds--but especially among those recruited into extremism. The anger of millions was something we explored for 100 episodes. Our anger--and the anger of others. And in the last few weeks, what so many of us saw as possible, became reality. That anger was weaponized and unleashed on our nation’s capitol in a truly terrible way. And while it’s never been more understandable to be angry, it’s not enough anymore. America is actually more divided, more angry, and more violent than ever before. And we need to combat that. We need to add light to the heat---anywhere possible. Independent Americans will be a critical part of the solution.42% of Americans are independents, while only 30% are Republican and 27% Democrat. Since the attack on the Capitol, thousands of Americans have changed their party status. 90% of those Republicans defectors are now unaffiliated/independent. As our guest explains, that number of independents is growing fast. The most powerful affiliation in American politics is no affiliation at all. Independent Americans are the future. Evan McMullin (@EvanMcMullin) is a patriot. And an independent. He had a career with the CIA, in business, and in Republican politics. In 2016, he ran for President of the United States as an independent. He now leads Stand Up Republic, a nonprofit focused on government reform. Evan is a face of the future. And he’s a leader in a movement to change our country for the better. He doesn’t accept the status quo or fake patriots. He joins our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for a candid conversation to break down the attack on the Capitol, the implosion of the Republican party, and what it’ll take for independent candidates to win elections in the future. If you’re among the 40% of Americans that are independent, this is your show. If you’re a Republican or Democratic Party, but you’re not a die-hard, this is your show. If you’re a concerned American who cares about the future of your country, this is your show. All are welcome. Ep 9999. DISPATCH SPECIAL: Fred Guttenberg. The Heroic Parkland Dad Confronts Representative Majorie Taylor Greene. On The Anniversary of His Daughter’s Death, A Father Is Fighting A Member of Congress Who Says It Didn’t Happen. How You Can Help.
Just when you think things can't shock you anymore, politics in America finds a way. We now all know about Q Anon. And we’re learning more and more about the role it/they played in the January 6 terrorist attack on our Capitol. And over the next few weeks, as the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump unfolds, we’ll all learn more about the conspirators, ringleaders, supporters — traitors — who made it all possible. And who are still conspiring right now. Many in the shadows of the internet and our society. But some are doing it right out in the open. Marjorie Taylor Greene is U.S. Representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district. She was elected this fall and sworn in last month. Video emerged this week showing her harassing and stalking a Parkland survivor, 17-year-old David Hogg. After claiming Parkland didn’t happen, a plane didn’t hit the Pentagon on 9/11 and Trump didn’t lose the election. A new American insurgency is now out in the open — and likely, growing. And growing thanks to the calls for attack by Donald Trump, fueled by calls from enablers like Rudy Giuliani, and propelled thanks to rising stars of the insurgency like Majorie Taylor Greene. She’s not last, crazy, dying gasp of a desperate group of people. She is leading the next wave. And a brave father is leading the charge to fight back. This special dispatch features an urgent conversation with a leader who is fighting a fight that shouldn't have to be fought. Fred Gutenberg is a hero. And a helper. Fred wrote a book called Find The Helpers. He suffered an unimaginable loss when his 14-year-old daughter Jamie was murdered at Parkland, Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School. Despite his pain, he emerged the very next day. He spoke at a vigil addressing his community. It was carried nationally and the entire country was riveted by what he said. And he has not stopped ever since then. And today, he introduced legislation to fight lies and stop Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene. Ep 9898. Charlotte Clymer Returns. Understanding the End of Trump’s Transgender Military Ban. Vetting Denis McDonough For VA Secretary. Biden’s Busy First Week. The Next Domestic Terrorism Threat.
Maybe you’ve slept better recently knowing that Trump no longer has access to our military. And to our nukes. But stakes are still high. As high as ever. And we’re gonna continue to break it down. This is not the time to rest---or even celebrate. That time is over. This is the time to stay focused and to stay vigilant. In this fiery episode, our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is again joined by dynamic transgender activist, writer and Army veteran, Charlotte Clymer (@CMClymer). They break down Biden’s repeal of Trump’s military transgender ban, the confirmation hearing of Denis McDonough to head the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), white nationalism in the military and veterans community, and pancakes vs waffles. Charlotte was named one of Fortune Magazine's '40 under 40', joined us back in Episode 65, and returns now to break down the latest news with fire, wit and independence. And as always, there’s a focus on the national security and veterans issues you won’t hear anywhere else. It’s the best independent news, politics and culture podcast in America. Ep 9797. SPECIAL DISPATCH: Wayne Smith. Reflections on Inauguration. “The Oracle” Returns. How We Heal Our Broken Country. The Promise the Future Holds.
We finally have a new president. A president who wants to be a uniter. A president we all hope can reach beyond partisanship. No matter how hard it will be. This post-inauguration special of The Dispatches features an important conversation with a leader who is a national voice of reason — Wayne Smith—a man we call, “The Oracle.” He joined us back in Episode 63 of Angry Americans in June of last year, and he’s here again to help us get some perspective on one of the most turbulent times ever. What do we make of this week? What is our place in history? What’s next? How do you reconcile with someone who tried to kill you? They’re heavy questions and the solutions aren’t easy, but helpers like Wayne Smith can help us all find the way. We made it through the election. We made it through the inauguration. We made it through 4 years of Trump. And we made it through an insurrection attempt and domestic terrorist attack on our Capitol. But we made it through. And our flag is still there. The war is on. This is your update. This is The Dispatches. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is an Army infantry and Military Police (MP) veteran, he’s fought an insurgency in Iraq, he’s guarded against violent mobs and terror attacks, and he’s set up check-points in New York City after 9/11. Ep 9696. SPECIAL DISPATCH: Dan Lamothe. The Washington Post Pentagon Reporter. BREAKING: 12 National Guard Soldiers Removed from Inauguration Duty. How Safe Is DC? Inside the Military Presence in Washington. Screening 25,000 Troops for Extremism.
This pre-inauguration special installment of The Dispatches features an urgent conversation with a leader who is covering maybe the most important story in America right now: our national, military response to the rising, imminent domestic threat at the inauguration and beyond. As 25,000 National Guard troops envelope Washington, DC, The Washington Post is now reporting that 12 members of the National Guard have just been removed from inauguration duty due after security screenings. At least two of those removed have possible sympathies for anti-government groups. And there may be more to come. The threat of an insider attack at the inauguration is very real. This is happening the same day that General Llyod Austin, Joe Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, faced confirmation hearings in the Senate. The same day that a U.S. Army soldier was arrested for allegedly assisting ISIS in plans to kill his fellow soldiers in the Middle East and hit terrorist targets in the US including the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. A new American insurgency---is now out in the open--and likely, growing. This is our new normal now. America is at war with the domestic terrorists. We are now truly a country at war with ourselves. Our guest for this episode is tearing into the breaking news from inside the military and breaks down this urgent and evolving story. Dan Lamothe (@DanLamothe) is one of the best military and Pentagon reporters in America. He has written about the Armed Forces for more than a decade, traveling extensively, embedding with each service, and covering combat in Afghanistan numerous times. His intrepid reporting is breaking news you need to know more about. President Mayhem calls reporters like Dan enemies of the people. We consider reporters like Dan defenders of our democracy. Guardians of the people. And he takes you deeper into an urgent side of inauguration that will only get a brief mention on most cable news networks. How safe is the inauguration? How the hell can the FBI and Department of Defense screen 25,000 National Guard troops for extremism in a week? If DC is secure, what might domestic terrorists hit this week instead? This is the important stuff. This is the game-changing stuff. This is the stuff you need to know. Most of the American media is looking on the surface---and looking back. Again, in this episode of The Dispatches, we’re going deeper--and looking forward. The war is on. This is your update. Ep 9494. DISPATCH SPECIAL: Malcolm Nance. Is An Insurgency What Comes Next? America Under Attack.
We are now truly a country at war. At war with the domestic terrorists. At war with the coronavirus. At war with a racist legacy. In 2021, America is at war with ourselves. The Dispatches is a quick-hit series of breaking news podcasts hosted by Iraq war veteran, author and activist Paul Rieckhoff that gives you information and analysis you need to protect yourself and the people you care about. This dispatch features an urgent conversation with America’s favorite terrorism expert: Malcolm Nance. The decorated military veteran, MSNBC terror analyst, and truth teller is back. Malcolm has spent 36 years focused on terrorist strategy, tactics and ideology and previously joined us on Episode 81 and Episode 13 of Angry Americans. In his last visit in October, he predicted exactly what we’re seeing in the headlines today. He described the domestic threat that was looming, rising and preparing to attack. Most folks didn’t see it coming. Malcolm Nance did. Malcolm again joins Paul Rieckhoff to break down what happened inside the US Capitol on January 6th, what most of the media missed about the violent attack, and what could happen next. It’s an expert breakdown from two combat veterans who also explain the big picture. What are we facing? Is this the beginning of a American insurgency? How violent will the next few weeks be across the country? Most of the American media is looking back. In this episode, we’re looking forward. The war is on. This is your update. Ep 9393. Chuck Hagel. Insurrection in America. Terror in the Capitol. President Mayhem blows it all up. All living SecDefs sound the alarm. The Dems take Georgia. What happens next? The former SecDef and Rieckhoff break it down.
America is under attack from within. Domestic terrorists invaded the Capitol. President Mayhem is blowing it all up on his way out. For months on Angry Americans, we warned that this could happen. It’s a dark time for all Americans. But this episode will help you understand it, unpack the causes and failures, and prepare for what comes next. Chuck Hagel is back to break it down with our host: Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff). Hagel shares unparalleled experience and perspective in this fragile time. He served as the Secretary of Defense under Obama and as a Senator from Nebraska. An independent Republican and the first Vietnam veteran in American history to lead the Pentagon, Hagel has been a straight-talking voice of reason for decades. And after joining us for a powerful Episode 82, he’s back now to analyze the unfolding national security and political crisis. He also explains how the urgent, unprecedented OpEd he authored with the other nine living former secretaries of defense secretaries came together. How did this happen? What will the military do now? How bad is it all? Hagel also breaks down the historic win for the Democrats in the Georgia Senate run-off election--and the future of our politics. This pod smartly and uniquely tears into all of it. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. Ep 8989. Admiral James Stavridis. The Brilliant Navy 4-Star and Rieckhoff Break Down the Pandemic, Trump vs the Pentagon, Biden’s Controversial Picks for Veterans Affairs and Defense, The Future of Independent Politics, Cold Martinis and Fiat Convertibles.
The anniversary of the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor was this week. And almost exactly 79 years later, American is experiencing a Pearl Harbor loss of life from the pandemic every single day. And just like after Pearl Harbor, our national response will be led by America’s military. It’s the Department of Defense (and the Department of Veterans Affairs) that will help distribute and administer the vaccine nationwide to everyone. Both agencies are in chaos--and were already under political attack from President Trump. Now, President-Elect Biden surprised the nation with the controversial selections of General Lloyd Austin for Secretary of Defense and Denis McDonough for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. As America navigates these treacherous waters, we have an inspiring, important, iconic leader to guide us through it. Retired Navy 4-star Admiral James Starvridis. [25:35] He led the NATO Alliance in global operations as Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan, Libya, the Balkans, Syria, counter piracy, and cyber security. The Admiral is a great American success story. The grandson of immigrants who fled ethnic cleansing in Turkey, Starvridis wrote of his immigrant grandfather: "His grandson, who speaks barely a few words of Greek, returns in command of a billion-dollar destroyer to the very city—Smyrna, now called İzmir—from which he sailed in a refugee craft all those years ago." Stavridis is built to serve. He’s an inspiring leader. He has a deep respect and regard for history. His perspective is deep. His vision is clear. He’s the perfect voice for the time we’re all facing. As President Mayhem dismantles the election, the Pentagon, and Democracy itself, President-Elect Biden returns to business as usual. And not in the good way. When the waters are this rough, we need an Admiral. It’s time us to all get on board, rush to our stations, man the guns, and face the storm. And this is the analysis you need to hear. Stavridis and Rieckhoff break down all of it. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun and no-BS perspective like nowhere else in the media. Ep 8888. Dr. Paul Haser. Winter is Here. Inside an Emergency Room Fighting the Virus. COVID is Like Glitter. New York: From the Pearl Harbor of the American Pandemic to Occupied France. Trump Vetoing the Defense Budget. Pentagon Purge Continues.
Winter is here. And we’ve got one last very hard month of 2020. But as the weather turns cold, our country is burning with the virus. With the pandemic surging nationwide, our independent host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks it down and rips into the most under-reported story in America: Trump’s ongoing purge of the Pentagon. Our national security is under attack from within. Trump’s hidden war against our warriors--and our Department of War--is escalating. Another top Pentagon official is out: this time the Director of the Pentagon's Defeat-ISIS Task Force. And our lame-duck Commander-in-Chief is now threatening to veto the defense budget--an urgent, annual bi-partisan budget that has passed for the last 59 years. All this while the Defense Department prepares to help deliver the coronavirus vaccine nationwide--and as the pandemic hits our veterans especially hard. We need a doctor to help us understand what’s really happening. In this urgent episode, we talk with one of the bravest doctors in one of the hardest hit hospitals. A hero who has been fighting the virus and saving lives non-stop since the earliest days of the pandemic.Dr. Paul Haser [22:44] is a brilliant and heroic emergency surgeon at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York–a front line in our war against the coronavirus. In the past, Paul volunteered as a surgeon in Haiti after the catastrophic earthquake and served at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany–the only forward-stationed medical center for U.S. and Coalition forces–treating combat injuries. Now, Paul’s hospital is a critical battle field in the war against the virus. In March, it was a beachhead. It was our Pearl Harbor--the first place to get hit by the virus. Now, as the virus has consumed our entire country, that beachhead has become occupied territory. If Brooklyn was once Pearl Harbor. Now, it’s occupied France. And Dr Paul Haser is leading the resistance. He’s an important and inspiring American leader that can break down this moment and leave you informed and inspired. Ep 8787. Rachel Maddow (Replay). Thanksgiving 2020. A Conversation to Warm Your Heart, Feed Your Brain, and Inspire Your Soul.
2020 has been a feast of insanity and stress. But even in a pandemic, there is still reason to be thankful. And this Thanksgiving season, after 86 episodes of Angry Americans, we’re extremely thankful for all the important, inspiring and iconic guests that have joined us. And few have been more popular than Rachel Maddow (@Maddow). [9:10] Loved by the left, often attacked by the right, but respected by all, Rachel recently disclosed on national TV that her partner of over 25 years was hit exceptionally hard by COVID. She courageously shared her story---and issued a warning to all before the holidays. It was a brave, powerful, important moment that had the country buzzing. This Thanksgiving, our Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) offers brief reflections on the most tumultuous year of our lifetimes, and presents a replay of a fantastic, fascinating and heart-warming conversation recorded last year pre-pandemic with Rachel Maddow in New York City inside a garage at the Classic Car Club Manhattan. Rachel breaks down what it’s like to interview presidential candidates, analyzes the media, and talks about her rise to national prominence and international fame. And she also shares her perspective on fishing, the story of her first car, and what really makes her happy--even when times are tough. It’s the perfect conversation to reflect on how much has changed in American in 2020, how much needs changing, and how much we can all still be thankful for. Whether you’re driving across the country, keeping it small with your pod, or working a double-shift on the front-lines of the pandemic, it’s a conversation that will leave you with the 4 I’s that serve as the main course of the dinner table in every episode: information, integrity, inspiration and impact. Pour yourself a glass of something good, pull up a chair, join our extended Righteous Media family, and sit down for a heart-warming double helping of delicious holiday-time content. Angry Americans remains your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun and no-BS perspective like nowhere else in the media. Ep 8686. Chuck D. Fighting the Power (2020 Remix). Public Enemy’s Iconic Founder on Trump, Biden, Harris, Black Lives Matter, SpaceX, Getting Old, Advice from Prince, the Future of Music, the NY Knicks.
As America faces power fights like we’ve never seen before, the legendary founder of Public Enemy joins us to explore and explain fighting the power: 2020 style. This is Chuck D--a voice of consciousness, outrage, inspiration and action for over 35 years---unplugged and uninterrupted. Just when our country needs it the most. Chuck D (@MisterChuckD) [35:37] is one of the most iconic and important American artists of the last century. He’s an activist, organizer, inspiration, and the ultimate angry American. He’s testified before Congress, co-hosted a political radio show with The Daily Show Founder, Liz Winstead and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and collaborated with artists ranging from Prince, to Anthrax, to Sonic Youth, to Rage Against the Machine, to Gary Clark Jr., to Logic, to Sheryl Crow. Chuck is the powerful, driving force behind arguably the most disruptive hip hop group in history. Born in the intersection of culture and politics, the hip hop trailblazers have interpreted the righteous anger of millions worldwide for decades. In the late 80s and early 90s, their first four albums went gold or platinum. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and honored this year with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), and Chuck have been friends for almost two decades. And this is Chuck from inside his home, raw, candid, and without commercial interruption. Chuck and Rieckhoff know how to throw punches. And their conversation will give you advice on fighting the power (and living life) that will leave you inspired for the tough fights ahead.Chuck is a real and fascinating creative mind that breaks down the results of the election, sizes up Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and offers analysis on why New Yorkers (and Trump) are uniquely powerful right now. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. And few artists in American history have been more angry than Chuck D. But more than almost anyone else, Chuck’s work and life is a demonstration in how to turn that anger into positive impact, and history-making art. Chuck is a perfect guest for these times--and this is an essential episode. And Rieckhoff rips into the issues and headlines you need to know about--from the deepening partisan divide in America, to the chaos at the Pentagon, to Trump’s assault on the election results, to the pandemic’s hidden impact on the military and veterans. Most podcasts simply break down what happened. Angry Americans will prepare you for what happens next. Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. It’s a smart, fun and no-BS perspective like nowhere else in the media. You’ll meet powerful, inspiring iconic guests in raw conversations and join a unique and powerful community. Ep 8585. General Barry McCaffrey. Biden Wins. BUT “You should be alarmed”. America in Crisis. Chaos at the Pentagon. Another Secretary of Defense Goes Down. The Most Volatile Veterans Day in our Lifetime. Chappelle and Starting Over.
No matter what Tucker Carlson or your crazy uncle says, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 election for President of the United States. Yes, he did it. Yes, we did it. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won. America won. We won. Trump lost. Authoritarianism lost. Trumpism lost. History is made. The good one won. The bad guy lost. Yes, there is reason to celebrate. But that shit’s over. This is no time to take a victory lap, or nurse a hangover. Even when world leaders are calling to congratulate Joe Biden, Trump and his loyalists are going down fighting. And some, may not wanna go down at all. Half of America isn’t celebrating. And Trump is doing what he does. He’s blowing things up. Things that are vital to our national stability, our homeland security, our fight against the virus and our domestic tranquility. And after failing to blow up the election. He moved on to the single most powerful, most vital, most sacred institution we’ve got. The pentagon. At the single most precarious time in recent history for our national security, Trump is firing #Yesper. Angry Americans host Paul Rieckhoff is no fan of the SecDef, but this massive disruption now is terribly bad for our troops & our security. #OurEnemiesAreCelebrating And it’s not just Esper. The Pentagon's top policy official James Anderson resigned. That paved the way for the nasty, Islamophobe retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata to take over policy. With our national security on the line, with a pandemic raging everywhere, Trump is flailing, and pulling this bullshit. And this is not a time for bullshit. It’s time for hard truths. And it’s time for hard leaders. Who can deliver, understand, communicate, plan for, and overcome hard truths. If you want sunshine, this is not your podcast. If you want truth, this is your place. Now and always. General Barry McCaffrey is no bullshit. General McCaffrey [27:27] is a serious man for these serious times. It’s a must-listen Angry Americans episode that will wake you up, focus your heart, and prepare you for the precarious days ahead.Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay calm. Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay cool. Welcome to a conversation that will help you stay vigilant. And a conversation that will help you stay frosty. Because the old idiom is true: cooler heads will prevail. So take a big deep breath America. We got you. With our country in turmoil and our values and stability under attack, if you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. In times like this, Angry Americans is your trusted, independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. Make it your weekly tradition. It’s a smart, fun and no-BS perspective like nowhere else in the media. You’ll meet inspiring, important and iconic guests in candid conversations like on no other show. Ep 8181. Malcolm Nance. What Happens The Day After Election Day? Preparing for Imminent Violence and Domestic Terrorism. President Mayhem vs Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Milley. Malcolm’s Awesome SCIF, Last Resort, Jericho, Red Dawn and Hannah Montana.
For years now, we’ve all been focused on November 3. 2020. Election Day, 2020. Everyone is understandably obsessed over primaries, swing states, turnout, voter suppression, down-ballot races, and Russian attacks. And we’ve all been focused on Election Day, November 3, 2020. But few are talking about what happens on November 4. Few are talking about The Day After Election Day. Armed protests, civil unrest, violence in the streets, domestic terrorism, deployment of the National Guard, deployment of active duty units, attacks by foreign enemies, attacks by domestic enemies, attacks on our leaders---attacks on our infrastructure, our systems, our cities and towns. This is not fiction. This is likely. In the immediate future, the most direct threats to you and your family are not Russian troops or North Korean Missiles or ISIS car bombs. In the immediate future, the most direct threat to you and your family are a lonely college kid with a sniper rifle, a wanna be militia man with a bomb, or an angry Trump supporter without a mask. This is our new reality. And the media is not talking about it. The media is not talking about The Day After. And how bad it could get after Election day. But we are. This urgent new episode of Angry Americans, we dig deep into what COULD happen after election day. If Trump wins. If Trump loses. And likely, either way. Malcolm Nance (@MalcolmNance) is America’s favorite terroism expert. [23:40] A decorated military veteran, an astute analyst, and a truth teller. He’s also a super cool guy--and a true patriot. You may know him from MSNBC or the NY Times Bestseller list. Malcolm served as a U.S. Navy specialist in Naval Cryptology, he was involved in numerous counter-terrorism, intelligence, and combat operations. He’s an expert in intelligence and counterterrorism. He was also an instructor in Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training--teaching Navy and Marine Corps pilots and aircrew how to survive as a prisoner of war. He helped to initiate the Advanced Terrorism, Abduction and Hostage Survival course of instruction. And he joins Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break down what The Day After could look like.Angry Americans is your independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. Ep 8080. Mick Foley. The Wrestling Legend Speaks Out. Trump’s Time in the WWE. Harris/Pence Smackdown. The Rock For President? Dude Love’s Message for All. The Superspreader Blames Gold Star Families. RIP, Eddie Van Halen.
From Trump’s time at Wrestlemania and subsequent induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, to rumors of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson running for President, to Linda McMahon’s run for the Senate, to Jesse “The Body” Ventura’s surprise independent election as the Governor of Minnesota, American politics and wrestling have been intertwined for decades now. And they’ve never looked more similar than right now. Every day is like a political battle royale. And Trump is like the worst heel ever--fighting with anyone and everyone--even blaming his recent COVID infection on Gold Star families. WWE legend Mick Foley (@TheRealMickFoley) is one of the greatest and most beloved professional wrestlers of all time--and our first guest that has his own action figure. In 2013, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame (the same year as Donald Trump). He’s played Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack. But his best and most important character that Mick Foley plays is himself. He’s also a two-time best-selling author, a father of four, a dedicated supporter of the military and veterans charities, a constant source of support for children’s causes, and an inspiration to millions worldwide. He even grows a beard every year to play Santa Claus. But he’s been silent on the 2020 election--until now. Mick Foley enters the ring to break his silence exclusively on Angry Americans to speak out about the election, the state of affairs in America, Donald Trump, Joe Biden and whether or not he thinks The Rock will run for President one day. In the wake of Trump’s diagnosis with COVID, the spread of the virus throughout the White House, and the first and only VP debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, it’s an episode that lays the political smackdown you need. Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is our referee, making sense of these times, sharing information that empowers you, and leaving you with stories and wisdom that will inspire you. With less than a month until the most important election in American history, and Trump sidelining more of our military leadership than our enemies ever have, Angry Americans is your independent source for news, politics, culture and inspiration. You’ll meet powerful, fascinating guests like Mick and always get a unique, independent and hard-hitting perspective like nowhere else in the media. This episode is possible thanks to those Patreon members and support from Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. Uncle Nearest is the most awarded American whiskey or bourbon of 2019 and 2020. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Especially after all this madness. But this show is always also about being active, informed and vigilant. Trump and Biden are fully engaged now in open political combat--and America is caught in between. Governor Christine Todd Whitman and host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) break down the pieces of the debate that are most important--and the key pieces you might have missed. And rather than navel-gazing, they talk about what could happen now as Trump activates white nationalists nationwide, and promises to fight the results if he loses. All while Biden just fights for oxygen. Election Day won’t be the end, but just the next chapter in a time of tremendous chaos. This pod has led the way on national security, veterans and first-responders issues, and Rieckhoff, a 9/11 First Responder himself, asks Todd Whitman what her message is for dying heroes, after she and the EPA told them the air was clear 19 years ago. Todd Whitman is the first woman in history elected as Governor of New Jersey, and shares how she got there, whether or not she and others will remain Republicans if Trump wins, and what the future of the party could look like if he doesn’t. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Especially after that debate. But this podcast isn’t just about being angry. It’s also about being active, informed and vigilant. It’s about speaking truth to power---and challenging the traditional media. And it’s also always about community. 9/11 First Responder and retired New York City firefighter Rob Serra (@SerraRob) represents the best of us. He’s a helper. A leader who runs into danger when others run out. And for the last six months, he’s been hunkered down in his basement. He’s leading this time by keeping himself safe from COVID19 so he can be there for his family. 9/11 toxin exposures have left his body battered and his immune system compromised. But it also hardened his spirit. And Rob now serves on the Board of Directors at the Ray Pfeifer Foundation and is a leading national voice for First Responders everywhere. And he’s the real King of Staten Island. At least on this show. After first joining us on Angry Americans back in Episode 2, and again in Episode 11, Rob is back on the pod [10:50] to bring the fire like only he can. And to help us break down the fires that are burning all across America right now. In a conversation with our host and fellow 9/11 First Responder, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), Rob helps us understand the urgency of burn pits--a health menace now facing millions of veterans nationwide--one that may have taken the life of Joe Biden’s son, Beau. Rob explains why burn pits are so connected to 9/11, Agent Orange, Jon Stewart and the true soul of America. He also analyzes the wildfires raging on the west coast and the political divisions torching Washington. And, throws in some amazing stories of his Grandma Dot. Rieckhoff breaks it down with Rob as only he can. Coming off of recent media appearances on Morning Joe, Deadline White House and the BBC, Rieckhoff is continuing to shape the national understanding of 9/11 and keeping an important, independent focus on the most urgent issues facing our veterans, troops and first responders. Trump has been caught by his own words. Demeaning the military, disrespecting our Generals, downplaying the virus, and lying to the American people. But what happens now? How is the Pentagon reacting? Will this moment be his Waterloo? Can President Mayhem survive the onslaught of bad news--especially when so much of it is focused on his fractured relationship with the military he commands? Nobody is in a better position to break it down than our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff). Fresh off a massive week of media hits in places like Morning Joe, Deadline White House and the BBC, Rieckhoff breaks it down as only he can. He’s a nationally-recognized expert on the intersection of our military and our politics and a 9/11 First Responder himself, who always has his ear to the ground. He’ll also take you behind the scenes inside the bizarre world of politics, media and the military and explain whether or not this will fade, how it’s impacting our national security, and whether or not it will mean the difference in the most important election of our time. And Rieckhoff brings in a very special guest who knows these issues better than anyone in America. Jason Dempsey (@Jason_K_Dempsey) [15:00] is a bad-ass warrior-scholar. A former Army infantryman with a PhD in politics who loves beer and bikes. A professor, author, researcher, combat veteran and one of the country’s foremost experts on civil-military relations, Jason is West Point graduate, a PhD, and Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and a powerful voice that must be heard. He led units on the ground in Afghanistan, served inside the White House, and literally wrote the book on the modern United states military: Our Army: Soldiers, Politics, and American Civil-Military Relations. As national security controversies dominate headlines like never before, host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) tears into the urgent latest news on possible Russian bounties paid to kill US troops. The President and Secretary of Defense Esper knew about it all. We cover Trump’s shameful attacks on Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman that drove him out of the military, the grisly murder of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen, the skyrocketing number of coronavirus cases inside the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Tucker Carlson’s outrageous slander of decorated combat veterans and US Senator, Tammy Duckworth. Trump lied and veterans died. The stakes have never been higher--and independent Army veteran and activist Rieckhoff rips through it all like only he can. And all of this unfolds as sports finally returns to play across America. Major League Baseball has restarted, the NBA is back in action, and NFL football is hoping to do the same soon. But players are getting sick, pushing back and speaking out. This while Trump attacks African-American NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and even defends the display of the Confederate flag at sporting events. The intersections of sports and politics have never been more intense. The dynamic Joy Taylor (@JoyTaylorTalks) is the important, inspiring and iconic guest who joins Angry Americans to guide us through all of it. Charlotte Clymer (@CMClymer) is a fighter. [1:23:12] An Army veteran and one of the most influential trans activists in the world, she’s gone from from a trailer park in Texas, to Army Infantry Basic Training at Fort Benning, to advocating for transgender people worldwide. Charlotte fights for herself and for others. Tough, patriotic and sharp, she burst onto the political scene in 2018 after being denied access to a Washington, DC restaurant bathroom. A dynamic powerhouse on Twitter, the former Press Secretary at the largest and most powerful LGBTQ organization in the country (HRC--Human Rights Campaign), Charlotte has written for Glamour, Vice, NBC and been a commentator on CBS News Sunday Morning. This Pride month, and in the wake of the historic Supreme Court decision protecting LGBTQ employees from discrimination based on sex, Charlotte takes us inside the life of a front-line fighter deep in the most critical fights of our time. She breaks down Trump’s politicization of the military, the Pentagon’s transban, why Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaign was historic, her favorite drink, if she’ll go back in the Army and whether she’ll run against Senator Ted Cruz back home in Texas. Following our most popular episode ever with actor and activist Ron Perlman, Angry Americans host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) leads a powerful conversation with another important, inspiring and iconic American changing the face of America’s past, present and future. If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. And actor and activist Ron Perlman (@perlmutations) is understandably angry. [1:02:35] Ron is known and loved worldwide for his popular roles in Sons of Anarchy, Hellboy, Beauty and the Beast and more. But he’s never had an audience like the one that watched his fiery and personal Twitter fight with Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz and Texas Senator Ted Cruz this weekend. It got nasty, it got personal, and it got attention around the globe. Ron was one of the pods' very first guests and returns to Angry Americans to take us exclusively behind the scenes of a wild weekend that had him trending on Twitter, challenged to a wrestling match with a Congressman, and making political headlines nationwide. Ron pulls no punches and gives us a fascinating insight into the bizarre, bareknuckle intersection of Twitter, politics, Trump, Hollywood, activism, and celebrity. In this episode, we connect with another activist on the frontlines of our unfolding political battlefields. Ron Perlman is a man in the modern political arena, throwing punches with a United States Senator for all the world to see. Ron also chops it up with Paul about Black Lives Matter, what shows he’s been binging during the pandemic, and his favorite band of all time. It’s a raucous and fun conversation with one of the most controversial and entertaining voices in America. And fresh off a round of national media appearances, Army veteran and renowned activist Paul Rieckhoff breaks down Trump’s escalating war with high-profile retired Generals like James Mattis, David Petreaus, Colin Powell and Martin Dempsey and his unprecedented speech at West Point’s graduation. Ep 6363. Wayne Smith. Warrior For Peace. The Funeral of George Floyd. “Defund The Police” vs “Reform the Police”. COVID-19 Hits the DC National Guard. Sec Deaf Yesper Almost Gets Fired. Gen. Milley Apologizes. COPS Gets Cancelled. Banksy is right. #StayFrosty
In this episode, we’ll take a step back from the frontline of our war against the virus to get some perspective. We’ll look back at history, so we can find a way forward. We’ll get up on the balcony, have a smoke, and look down on the chaotic moshpit of a dancefloor that is America right now. We’ll slow down a bit, so we can go fast. We’ll explore what war, racism, the virus and President Mayhem are doing to our soul -- as individuals and as a nation. And we’ll have deep conversation with Wayne Smith, [1:22:14] a man that is so cool that his Twitter handle is really @1soulbrother. Movements need leaders. And later, if they survive, movement leaders graduate to become elders. And that’s what Wayne is. He’s an elder for America. Wayne Smith is a warrior turned peacemaker. Wayne Smith is an accomplished veterans advocate who has worked with war veterans for nearly four decades. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, he was an altar boy and choirboy. After serving nearly 18 months in Vietnam as a combat medic, Wayne overcame his own wartime trauma before becoming a nationally recognized mental health therapist and advocate for war veterans. Smith has led educational programs about veterans and the causes and consequences of war, and helped raise more than $2 million for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. In 1998, Smith returned to Vietnam with 20 American veterans to promote peace and reconciliation. Together with 20 Vietnamese soldiers, these former enemies rode bicycles 1,200 miles -- from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City -- to help heal some of the wounds of that war. Smith is also one of the veterans featured in the Emmy Award winning documentary about the war. He also serves on the board of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).As the tempers flare hotter and hotter, all across America, Wayne joins us to bring some perspective, wisdom, history and, maybe most of all, peace through strength. It’s needed at this time. A time when we -- more than ever as a nation -- must respect our elders. At a time when as a nation we’re losing more of our elders than ever. We’re losing them to time -- and especially -- to the virus. As anger, activism and the stupid continue to engulf more and more of the country, we’ll try to bring a little peace. Angry Americans continues a groundbreaking focus on the front-line fighters of the war against COVID-19–and now the civil unrest that has erupted nationally since the killing of George Floyd—with another important, inspiring and iconic guest. It’s another episode of the most dynamic podcast in America for independent politics, news and culture. Ep 6060. Bonnie Carroll. Memorial Day in a Pandemic. Trump Tests Hydroxychloroquine on Vets. Turning Grief into Gratitude. Surviving Losing a Spouse. Biden’s Pain. 3 Whales, Reagan & Gorbachev. Shattering Assumptive Reality. The Dutch Oven of the Coronavirus.
As the country battles whether or not to wear masks, and whether or not hydroxychloroquine works, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) rips into the news you need with his trademark wit, wisdom and humor. He digs into the top national defense, first-responders and vets news and shares a powerful conversation with Medal of Freedom recipient and legendary TAPS Founder Bonnie Carroll (@bonnie_at_taps). Angry Americans continues a groundbreaking focus on the front-line fighters of the war against COVID-19 with another inspiring guest shaping the future. This Memorial Day will be unlike any other. Arlington National Cemetery is closed to visitors. Parades are canceled. Veterans are being buried without military funerals. Memorial Day is about remembering those lost to our nation’s wars. And this year, with over 93,000 Americana dead from the coronavirus, there is a profound sense of mourning and loss nationwide. But it can also be a time for unity. And to draw lessons about how to mourn and move forward after loss from a courageous group of people: surviving military families. Over 7,000 troops have died in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries since 9/11. Over 6,000 are lost every year to suicide. Mostly hidden from the nation’s view. But now, America is feeling the pain of loss. And military families can help us understand pain and move forward. Their greatest champion is Bonnie Carroll. [47:44] Bonnie is one of toughest leaders you’ll ever meet. A veteran, the surviving spouse of General Tom Carroll, a former staffer in the Reagan and Bush White Houses, and President and Founder of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the leading national organization providing care for those impacted by the death of a military loved one. Bonnie courageously founded TAPS after the death of her husband in an Army plane crash. She turned a tragedy into triumph. And will help you overcome whatever challenges you face now. Bonnie knows isolation, depression and pain like few others in the world. She knows how to survive it, find purpose and thrive afterwards. She is the author of Healing Your Grieving Heart After A Military Death and one of the foremost experts on grief and trauma. She’s also a happy warrior, a mentor and a voice of light in the most trying times. And a longtime friend and mentor of our host, Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, @PaulRieckhoff. Ep 5959. Baratunde Thurston. Being Black in the Pandemic. The Murder of Ahmaud Arbery. What Black People Should Expect From Biden. The Virus Hits The White House. Trump’s Racism is Catching up with Him. The Old Fashioned Is The Most Democratic Drink Ever.
The pandemic is devastating America. And black Americans especially. Maybe more than any other group in the United States. As many as one-fourth of the overall American dead from the pandemic are black. And people of color are disproportionately serving on the front lines of healthcare, public transportation, food services and many other industries that are the hardest hit. The impact on black people is another hidden and underreported front in our war against COVID-19. And meanwhile, Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black jogger, was ruthlessly murdered by two white men in Brunswick, Georgia---sparking outrage and anger nationwide--while President Trump continues to make racist statements at the White House aimed at Chinese people. In this powerful new episode, we dig into race and the coronavirus. Race has never been more urgent, divisive and underreported. Except for on this pod. Independent activist, author, social entrepreneur and Army veteran @PaulRieckhoff breaks it down and leads a fascinating and riveting conversation with Baratunde Thurston (@Baratunde). [1:06:00] Baratunde is a powerful, inspiring and dynamic next-generation thought leader. He’s an activist, futurist, comedian and author of the New York Times bestseller, How To Be Black. He’s worked for The Onion, produced for The Daily Show, advised the Obama White House, and cleaned bathrooms to pay for his Harvard education.
