Ep 157157. UKRAINE WAR REPORT. Bianna Golodryga. Are We Already at War with Russia? How to Talk to Kids About Ukraine. Is NATO Obsolete? American Vets Join the Fight. No-Fly Zone No-Go. State of the Union Fail. Biden’s 9/11. Can America be Counted on Anymore?
The fight of our time is here. For Ukraine, for Europe, for the US, for our collective future. Now, more than any other time in our lifetime, is a time for us all to stay vigilant. And now is also a time for us to fight. In whatever way we can. The war in Ukraine is the most significant global moment of conflict since 9/11. Maybe since World War Two.And we will focus on it on this show until further notice. We’re going to talk to analysts, politicians, fighters, and leaders. And we’re going to support Ukraine in any way we can. Starting now on #IndependentAmericans, we bring you the first #UkraineWarReport episode. We’ll intensify our unique focus on national security, military operations and foreign policy to bring you more independent content to help you meet this moment, stay ahead of the curve, and #StayVigilant. NATO is not moving fast and creatively enough. And Putin’s taking advantage of it. It’s time to do more than cheer Ukraine from outside. It’s time to get inside and truly #StandWithUkraine️. It’s a time to improvise, adapt and overcome. For the US, for NATO, for Ukraine, and for anyone who is serious about defending and protecting freedom, defeating evil and building toward a brighter future. And we’ll do that with this show. And with this episode. And with this important, iconic and inspiring guest. Bianna Golodryga (@BiannaGolodryga) has been a thoughtful and trusted fixture in the media for two decades. She is CNN’s dynamic Global Affairs analyst, an expert on Russia, a native Texan, a mother, and an inspiring American immigration story. After migrating to the US as a child from Moldova, in the former Soviet Union, Bianna grew up in Houston, and started her journalism career as a producer for CNBC. She’s interviewed newsmakers including President Clinton, Condoleezza Rice and Warren Buffett. She also went to High School with Beyoncé. She’s smart, experienced and real. Bianna understands the war and the players from all sides. A clear voice of reason and experience in a world of chatter and hot air. She joined us last March for an amazing Episode 106. And she’s back again to break down this historic moment. Bianna joins Independent Americans and our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for a fast, fascinating and unique conversation about the war in Ukraine, how to talk to your children about the conflict unfolding, and what country Putin might invade next. Every episode of Independent Americans is pulled from the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It’s independent content for independent Americans. And delivers a blast of the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. This is another insightful pod to help you stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans will continue to be your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. Ep 156156. Russia Invades Ukraine. Jehriko Turner and Don Elivert. Introducing The B Dorm Podcast. Race, Politics, Culture, Friendship, Fun. White People Saying The N Word. Joe Rogan, Trevor Noah, MLS and Notorious B.I.G.
Yesterday was the last day of peace on the European continent for a long time to come.We are on the brink of world war. And will be for some time to come. This is the dawning of a new day of war in Europe. War between a dictator and an alliance of free nations. A war between Russia and the world. And a war between Russia and the US. A new kind of war the likes of which we’ve never seen (because it’s not “cold” if they wage cyber attacks and attack our elections). Meanwhile, earlier today. In case you missed it, (because you probably did), the United States carried out a "self-defense" strike in Somalia yesterday. First U.S. strike in Somalia since August 202. Our forever war that spans from Syria to Somalia, just got extended into this new front with Russia in Ukraine. For now. Independent Americans is continuing to keep our eyes on the most important security and military issues in the world. But this episode, we’re taking an offramp to a very different kind of vibe. While war rages around the world, the culture and political wars still wage here at home. And in the midst of our national internal identity crisis, we at Righteous Media continue to produce content to add light to contrast the heat. Content to help move America forward. Content that delivers the Righteous Media I’s in more ways, to more people. And following the successful launch of The Firefighters with Rob Serra, and the recent announcement of Uncle Montel - the OG of Weed, we are proud to introduce you to the newest podcast in the Righteous family. We are proud to introduce you to The B Dorm Podcast. Hosted by two black men from Queens, educated at one of America’s most elite and most white colleges, they dive into the news, politics, race and pop culture with a perspective that flies from the highly intellectual to the downright silly. The “B Dorm” at Amherst College was the place they met and held court. Now, it's the vibe of their new podcast. In a sea of partisan nonsense and weakness, The B Dorm Podcast (B Dorm) is the hottest new morning show-style podcast in America. In the spirit of The Breakfast Club, with the intelligence of Howard Stern and with the edge of Joe Rogan, B Dorm is the new weekly show that’s not afraid to talk race--and culture, music, sports, relationships, politics and anything else on the minds of the dynamic, fun and energizing hosts, Don Elivert (@voiceofdon) and Jehriko Turner (@JehrikoTurner). They have big voices--and big brains. They get serious, but have fun–and always keep it real. Real-talk with two real friends, who are real smart and real fun. They chat about business, culture, entertainment, and whatever comes to mind. Sometimes they get serious, but they never take themselves too seriously. It’s an unapologetic, dorm room style conversation - sometimes controversial, always entertaining: this is The B Dorm Podcast. They join our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a very real, very candid conversation–about race, the media and how we can all work together to do better. It’s a great conversation. It’s a necessary conversation. And it’s a great introduction to your next favorite podcast.Every episode of Independent Americans hosted delivers light to contrast the heat. Ep 155155. Ana Marie Cox. Everybody’s Not OK. Pandemic Drinking. The COVID Mental Health Crisis. Alcoholics Anonymous As a Model for Governing America. The Church of Media Personalities from Rogan to Maddow. Sober Questioning & Self Care. Austin, Texas, USA.
We are all tired as hell right now. After the last few years of….ALL OF IT….we’re all depleted. From the pandemic, to the political drama, to the possible new world war with Ukraine…it never seems to end. And mid-February can be the hardest time of year–even in the best of times. So here we are. The no-shit is that these are definitely not the best of times. Many of us are exhausted, beaten-down, and wounded. None of us is unchanged. And the global post-COVID mental health crisis is just getting started. 2022 may be the year we end the pandemic and start the suffering that follows. From suicide to divorce to bankruptcies to alcoholism, it’s all happening–and getting worse. We are not OK. But we can be. We can get through it. To better days. To healthier lives. To happier times. But we all need help making that happen. This is a time especially, to look for the helpers. And Ana Marie Cox (@AnaMarieCox) is one of those helpers that is now rising to meet this moment. She’s been to the dark edge, and is coming back to help others avoid it. After decades as a media innovator and self-described “troublemaker”, the trailblazing Founding Editor of Wonkette, political columnist, and culture critic you may know from cable TV new and places like MTV, Esquire, the Washington Post and her highly successful Crooked Media podcast, Friends Like These, Ana has launched a new life and a new column. It’s focused on sobriety. But also on her Christianity, her experiences, and her unique brand of wisdom. And she joins our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a very real, very candid, very thoughtful, very useful conversation–about the hard challenges of life in these exceptionally challenging times. They talk about drinking, divorce, the dysfunction of our politics and media, and how to get through it all. And weave into the biggest political issues and challenges along the way. It’s hard to fight when you’re tired. And we’re all tired. But this is an invaluable conversation to help you through it. It’s a life-hack, a dose of reality, and an injection of advice. It’s unlike any other episode of this show before. And it’s one you’ll want to share. Check out Ana Marie Cox’s work as mentioned/discussed in this episode:Sober Questioning. Ana’s powerful new column for New York Magazine’s The Cut.Space The Nation. The science fiction and politics podcast with co-host Dan Drezner. The Churn: A Podcast About The Expanse. Ep 154154. Dan Lamothe. Damning New Reporting on the Afghanistan Debacle. Military Leaders Clashed with the State Dept as Kabul Fell. Biden Blocks Media Embeds for Ukraine. Where Are The Whistleblowers? The Washington Post Military Reporter On His Latest Work.
There is breaking news that you need to hear about. And so we’ve got a special episode to tear into it. Because especially in this already wild winter of 2022, now is a time to stay vigilant. The US withdrawal from Afghanistan was filled with carnage, tumult and political spin. But after months of denying the facts on the ground, the truth about what really happened in those fateful days is finally starting to come out. New documents reveal the U.S. military was intensely frustrated with the White House, State Department and diplomats over the Afghanistan evacuation. The Washington Post broke the story, and the lead reporter who wrote it is here to talk about it. Dan Lamothe (@DanLamothe) is one of the best military and Pentagon reporters in America. He has written about the US Armed Forces for more than a decade, traveling extensively, embedding with each service, and covering combat in Afghanistan numerous times. He joined us a year ago for Episode 96. And the intrepid reporter is again breaking news that you need to know more about. He’ll also react to the Biden administration’s controversial decision to ban media embeds from the US deployment of troops in response to the Russian threat to invade Ukraine. Dan is a member of the Military Reporters & Editors Association–which recently called on the Secretary of Defense to reverse the decision and allow embeds. He’s also address why there have been so few whistleblowers since Biden has been elected. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) provides light to contrast the heat. It’s independent content for independent Americans. Always with a focus on military affairs, global conflict and national security. And delivers the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Ep 153153. Molly McKew. Ukraine In the Crosshairs. Cyberwar with Russia Has Already Started. Putin’s Love of F&*%ery. Red Dawn 2022. Redefining War. The Klitschko Brothers On The Front Lines. The Russian Influence & Information Warfare Expert Is Back.
American diplomats are boycotting the Olympics, the Cincinnati Bengals are in the Super Bowl, and Russia is threatening war. It kinda feels like the 1980s again. And it is very much a time to stay vigilant.Especially with regard to Ukraine. While the world watches to see if Putin will invade the country, the attacks have already begun. But not the conventional kind with bombs and tanks. Cyberwarfare is the new forward edge of modern combat. And Russia has already started waging it against Ukraine, the United States and others. Meanwhile, most Americans aren’t hearing much about the Ukrainian people. Even the most famous ones like heavyweight boxing champions and political activists Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. And we’re digging into it with information warfare and Russian influence expert, Molly McKew (@MollyMcKew ). After joining us in Episode 115 and Episode 84, one of our most interesting and popular guests is back. Molly has traveled the world studying, analyzing and advising on the most urgent cybersecurity, misinformation and technology-based threats. An adjunct professor at Georgetown with a love for cats, baking and sci-fi, Molly takes us into the sides of the Russian standoff that most of the media in America is missing. We explore what’s happening, what’s new and what’s next. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is pulled from the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It was a very bloody January in America for law enforcement. At least 30 cops were shot nationwide. From California to Montana to NYC. It feels like Groundhog Day every day. And in 2022, police are the hottest political chew toy in America. A space previously reserved for troops and vets. In a powerful new #IndependentAmericans, we dig into it. Hard. With a guest who’s been on all sides of the issues. We look deeper, we look with experience, and we look for solutions. Beyond the partisanship and spin.No matter where you stand, or how you feel, it’ll help you #StayVigilant. And help you shoot straight. Our guest is a leader to help us do it. He’s a guy who literally trains people to shoot straight. JW CORTÉS (@JWCortes) is a combat veteran turned actor, singer, non-profit leader, cop and activist. He’s acted in a range of other roles on POWER, The Blacklist, Blue Bloods and the NBC reality series Stars Earn Stripes alongside the American Sniper Chris Kyle and most recently, a recent cameo in a Jennifer Lopez music video. Ep 151151. Michael Smerconish. Defining “Independent''. Analyzing Independent Candidates From Gary Johnson to Bloomberg to Schwarzenegger to Yang. How To Be Independent in Media. How F*#ked is Biden with Independents? Neil Young vs Joe Rogan. NFL OT Sucks.
As we all saw this weekend, NFL overtime sucks. A score on the opening drive should NOT end the game. It’s just not fair. The system is broken. Badly. But it’s not just the NFL OT system. The American political system is broken too. Badly. And so is the media. Badly. And the stakes there are so much higher than in football. And in this episode, we’re staying focused on the media (like we did last episode with Soledad O’Brien). But we’re also zooming out into the bigger picture of where this independent movement is–and where it’s going. We’re breaking down who independents are—and who might be an independent candidate for President in 2024. And we’re continuing to identify the systems that are broken, and offering solutions to fix them. And our guest has been as focused on it all. For long before we have. And he’s here to help us explore all of it. He’s a longtime political commentator, radio host, TV host, best-selling author, and maybe the single most high profile political independent in the media. A guy who has served as a guest host for voices on all sides of the political spectrum. He’s been a guest host for Chris Matthews AND for Bill O’Reilly. For Chris Cuomo AND for Glen Beck. And he’s the host of his own SiriusXM radio and CNN TV show. And Paul Rieckhoff’s stunt double. He’s a one man island of political independence in talk radio and the media: Michael Smerconish (@Smerconish).Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) provides light to contrast the heat. Ep 150150. Soledad O’Brien. The Stupid Has Infected the Media. Shooting Fireballs At Everyone From CNN to Fox to MSNBC to Joe Rogan. The Naughty Centre: Now Open for Boris Johnson, Madison Cawthorn, Joe Biden. Laura Ingraham and more.
The stupid is rampant in America. It continues to be the only thing in America more contagious and rampant than the omicron variant. And it’s especially widespread in the media. So this episode, we’re digging into it. We’re overdue for a conversation on the state of the American media. The American media that far too often fails the American people. And especially Independent Americans. We often feel politically homeless. We’ve covered that early, often and with regularity on this show. But we’re also too often homeless when looking for media. Especially when it comes to the cable news networks. Which continue to shamelessly coddle one party or the other, or, just as often, shamelessly chase the clicks, the drama, the fighting, and of course, the money. The news and political media are failing America. Partisans dominate. The two sides are constantly at war. And as our country burns, they fan the flames. They turn up the heat. And this episode, we’re adding light to contrast the heat–and ripping into all of them. From CNN to Fox to MSNBC to PBS. And we’re doing it with a returning champion, a crowd favorite, and a lover of fireball whiskey. Our guest from way back in Episode 16 from July of 2019. Media critic, media host, and media force of nature (especially on Twitter), award-winning journalist, documentarian, news anchor, and producer, Soledad O’Brien (@SoledadObrien). It’s a blunt, smart and fun conversion that takes you behind the scenes of the highest levels of media and politics.Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) provides light to contrast the heat. And every episode delivers a dose of the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. This is another insightful pod to help you stay vigilant. Ep 149149. Congressman Adam Kinzinger. Is He Running for President? Will He Leave the Republican Party? Are We Facing an American Insurgency? What Is He Naming His Baby? Ted Cruz, Ray Epps, Ukraine & Afghanistan. Diapers vs Bottles.
It’s a dark, cold time in America. In many ways. But even in the darkest, coldest times, there are always helpers. Sources of light to warm our spirits and guide us out of the cold. And one of those sources is our guest in this episode: Congressman Adam Kinzinger (@AdamKinzinger).The 43-year-old Illinois Republican Congressman, Air Force combat veteran, political maverick, and fighter of the good fight is the man of this moment in American politics. He’s catapulted to the forefront of America’s consciousness in the last few months as one of only two republicans on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He’s taking shots from all sides–and he’s fighting back. But is he running for President in 2024? Does he think that we are facing an American insurgency? Will he leave the Republican Party? What’s he naming his new baby? Who the hell is Ray Epps? What should America do about Ukraine and Afghanistan? Why can’t he stop Tweeting about Senator Ted Cruz? What’s worse, changing diapers or cleaning bottles? Our intrepid host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) presses Kinzinger on these questions and more in a fresh, candid and hard-hitting conversation that’s sure to make news. Every episode of Independent Americans provides light to contrast the heat. And every episode delivers a dose of the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. This is another insightful pod to help you stay vigilant. Ep 148148. EXCLUSIVE: Noah Shachtman. Rolling Stone’s Editor-in-Chief. January 6: One Year Later. Navarro’s 100 Congressmen to Overturn the Election. Reviving Rolling Stone. Exposing Eric Clapton, Marilyn Manson, Joe Manchin. Music, Politics and Independents.
It’s a new year. It’s a new variant. It’s a new winter. And a new anniversary. It’s the first anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. And it is definitely a time to stay vigilant.Army vet, activist and host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) digs into all of it. And we’re joined by Rolling Stone’s new Editor-in-Chief, Noah Shachtman (@NoahShachtman). He’s tasked with reviving the iconic American magazine founded by Jann Wenner and built by the legend of Hunter Thompson. The former bass player in a ska band is now breaking stories about the insurrection, the fall of Afghanistan, sex scandals in the Army special forces and the dark history of music icons like Marilyn Manson and Eric Clapton. Their latest headline-grabbing piece on the January 6 insurrection focuses on Trump advisor Peter Navarro spilling the beans on an alleged 100 members of Congress who he says were standing by to overturn the election of Joe Biden one year ago. Shachtman joins the pod exclusively to talk about all that–and to preview a new investigative Rolling Stone piece about the insurrection and the role of military veterans set to his this week. This latest episode is about starting the year by providing light to contrast the heat. It’s your new year’s resolution delivering a healthy dose of the 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. It’s another insightful episode to help you stay vigilant. Yeah…Santa is coming very soon. But before he does, we’ve got some pretty wild political news happening in America. And we wanna give you an early holiday gift of great content. And a very high-profile guest. Unless you haven’t already read the title, you know who it is. He’s the host of Meet The Press, one of the most influential and iconic political shows in America. He’s the host of Meet The Press Daily on MSNBC, and he’s the Political Director at NBC. On this show in the last year, we’ve had Chuck Hagel. And we’ve had Chuck D. And now, finally, we’ve got Chuck Todd (@ChuckTodd).As the January 6th investigations continue, as the cable news networks play musical chairs with their prime-time line-ups, as tensions rise with Russia over Ukraine, and as the omicron variant rips around the world faster than Santa delivering presents, our fearless host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), tackles it all head-on. From troops refusing the vaccine, to Don Jr’s texts, to accountability for the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. It’s a Christmastime feast of crazy. Ep 144144. Tavis Smiley. Race, Politics and Media in America. What is “Progressive”? Sympathy vs Empathy. Dr. King’s Message for 2021. The Doors That Carlos Watson’s Ozy Media Closed. Remembering Bob Dole.
In the last 11 months especially, it’s been easy to lose hope. From the pandemic, to the racial injustice, to the betrayal of Afghanistan, to the disintegration of the Republican Party, to the ineptitude of the Democratic Party. From coast to coast, there’s a loss of hope across America this holiday season. But in this moment, when the enemies of America seem to be chomping at the bit, we’ve got to keep the hope. And like Bob Dole, who overcame almost dying on the battlefield in Italy in World War Two and 39 months in the hospital afterwards, we can not only stay hopeful, but we can stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. This show is all about staying vigilant. It’s about providing light to contrast the heat. It’s about pushing for better. It’s about keeping the hope. And about sharing the hope of the Righteous Media 5 I’s, to keep you warm and keep you hopeful. It's the hope of independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And it's about real talk, about real issues. No sugar coating. No partisan spin. No corporate masters. No bullshit. And that’s what’s next. It’s a conversation with a voice you know, a voice of reason, a voice that endured adversity, a voice of truth, and especially now, a voice of hope. He’s our guest, Tavis Smiley (@TavisSmiley). Tavis has worn a lot of hats in a lot of places. He’s hosted shows on BET, NPR, PBS and now owns LA’s first black-owned talk radio station, KBLA 1580. He's taken on controversies, and has had his share of his own. He’s been a fixture in the national conversation for decades, and an unforgettable, impactful guest in places ranging from Meet The Press to HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. He’s been up, and he's been down. And after years of working for other networks, he’s back with a new media network of his own. And a fire that’s hotter than ever before. Our fearless host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) digs into his aspirations for KBLA, what it means to be “progressive”, and the triple threat facing our democracy. Why he thinks Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the greatest American of all time, Trump and the rise of extremism and white nationalism. Sympathy vs empathy, and the implosion of Carlos Watson’s Ozy Media. And we’ll talk about hope. Because Tavis has a take on hope that you will not forget. A take that’s perfect as we get deeper into the holidays. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans will continue to be your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. Ep 143143. Dr. Vin Gupta. The Omicron COVID Variant. What We Need to Know and Do. Preparing Yourself For a Tough Winter. The Military’s Struggle to Fully Vaccinate. National Guard Units Refuse the Shot Order. Handling Stress in the Pandemic.
In just a few weeks, Santa will be back. The lights are up, the sales have started, and the elves are on the shelves--and hanging from light fixtures, dangling from curtains and zip lining across living rooms around the world. And Santa will soon be here. But not before we all prepare to receive a very different kind of holiday visitor. Yes, Santa is back. But so is the coronavirus. It’s a jab in the arm of independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And just like Buddy the Elf is back delivering laughs, one of our favorite doctors is back on the pod to deliver the booster shot of content you need this winter. Dr. Vin Gupta (@VinGuptaMD) is a public health physician, an Air Force officer, a professor, an NBC News analyst, and true voice of reason. He is a helper and a patriot. He’s the guy you wish was your personal doctor right now. He joined the show back in Episode 83 in late 2020 to help you prepare for the hardest fall and winter any of us has ever faced. And he’s back now to give us the real prognosis--on the new omicron coronavirus variant, whether or not you should get the shot (if you haven’t already), the booster, and why it’s been so damn hard to vaccinate the American military. It’s a quick, focused, no-shit booster shot of an episode that will leave you better informed and ready for the holidays--and whatever comes next. Ep 141141. Joe Cirincione. The Marshall Islands, the Western Shoshone Tribe, the Atomic Vets: America’s Secret Nuke Past. The Rich and Powerful Test While the Rest of Us Die. Inside the New Series on ViceTV.
Now is still a time to stay vigilant. Especially when it comes to national security.Ukraine says that Russia has amassed 100,000 troops near their border. Along with tanks, armored personnel vehicles and artillery. NATO has issued a warning. America has issued a warning. And Russia is denying they plan to invade Ukraine. War is very possible. And you were probably focused instead on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers lying about being vaccinated. Or maybe, understandably, you were focused on getting your kid a COVID shot or getting yourself a booster. But while you and most of America are focused on all that, the Secretary of Defense, and many others tasked with protecting America have their eyes on Russia. They always have their eyes on Russia. And on North Korea. And on Pakistan. And on China. And on five other countries across the globe. Because of one simple reason: they have nukes. Nine countries in the world possess nuclear weapons capable of destroying the entire globe. And one of them is Russia. And maybe you forgot about that completely until you read this. Nuke are THE number one threat to the entire world as we know it. Yeah, pandemics can be globe-killers. And of course, climate change is stripping and burning the world bit by bit. But only nukes could destroy the entire world as we know it in a matter of hours. And THAT is worth your focus. And your attention. And your vigilance. And it’s the focus of the newest episode of the groundbreaking television mini-series on Vice TV, While The Rest of Us Die. Our host, Paul Rieckhoff, is Consulting Producer and a Contributor. And he and Righteous Media are bringing you this powerful, urgent Season #2 of the series every Thursday this month at 10PM. Produced by Efran Films, Showrunner Anthony Lappé, and narrated by our friend and past guest on this show, Jeffrey Wright, the series is tearing into the scariest, most deadly, most urgent issues facing us all. And in the newest episode, we’re talking nukes. And it features one of the best minds in the world on the issue--and our guest in this pod--Joe Cirincione (@Cirincione).Joe has worked on nuclear weapons policy in Washington for more than 35 years and is one of the top experts in the field. He was the Director for Non-Proliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and author of Deadly Arsenals: Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Threats, and co-author of Universal Compliance: A Strategy for Nuclear Security. He was the president of Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation. And now teaches at the Georgetown University Graduate School of Foreign Service. He’s one of America’s best known weapons experts, appearing frequently in print and on FOX News, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, PBS, NPR and occasionally on Comedy Central. He joins us to drop knowledge bombs about nukes. And it’s an episode you don’t want to miss. Hit play now. Ep 140140. Shad Meshad. Remembering Max Cleland. Veterans Day Special. Celebrating a True American Hero. The Mad Man and The Cowboy. The Creation Of The Vet Centers. Stronger At The Broken Places. The Doobie Brothers. Taking It To The Streets.
Senator Max Cleland was a true American hero. One of the finest, most selfless leaders of our time. He was a titan. And his tremendous impact was second only to his huge heart. Even in these last few difficult months before he died, he was a fighter—and a happy warrior. And Max’s passing comes the week of Veterans Day. Max defined what it means to be an American veteran. And what it means for veterans to continue to serve after they take off the uniform. And after tragedy. He’s the godfather of modern veterans affairs and advocacy--and he’s forever stronger at the broken places. In this Veterans Day special episode, our host and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff reflects on the life and legacy of his friend, mentor and personal hero, Max Cleland. And in order to even begin to properly tell Max’s story, we hear from a man who knew him better than almost anyone else. Another hero, another mentor, another Vietnam veteran, another son of the south, another true American hero: Shad Meshad. Shad has known Max for over 45 years. And in this time of mourning, and reflection, and especially this Veterans Day, he is the person we most need to hear from. They call him the Mad Man. For more than five decades, National Veterans Foundation Founder and President Shad Meshad has been one of the most important veterans advocates in the world. He is a therapist for Veterans and an advocate for Veterans’ rights. After getting his master’s degree in psychiatric social work from Florida State University, he enlisted in the army in 1970 and served as a counselor for U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. That was years before we knew this was really a thing. He’ll tell you more about that, the Max Cleland most people never knew, and all the lessons we can all learn from Max’s amazing life. You can support this show and join our dynamic community of listeners by joining the IA Patreon community. Ep 139139. Scott MacFarlane. Jan 6 Insurrection Arrest and Trial Update: How Many are Still at Large? Why Are They Allowed to Go to Mexico For Vacations? Kids Cleared for the Vaccine. Independents Flex Power on Election Day. Why Yang is Not an Independent.
This Election Day was just the latest painful reminder of how badly the two major parties are failing the American people. But it also underscored the growing importance (and number) of independents in America. And Rieckhoff is digging into all of it--from Virginia to New Jersey, and from Joe Manchin to Andrew Yang and his new “Forward” party. And 11 months ago, a group of traitors, fools and domestic terrorists tried to capture and kill the Speaker of the House and the Vice President and sack our Capitol. They threw crap on the walls, rejected the results of a fair election, and tried to overthrow our government. And somehow, this isn’t the top news story on every news channel. But our guest in this episode has been staying vigilant in covering it more than any other journalist in America. He’s the best kind of Independent American. One who seeks the truth, fights for justice and demands that attention be paid. NBC investigative reporter and one-man January 6th truth-telling machine, Scott McFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews).MacFarlane is the guy with the most important Twitter feed and news reporting on what’s happening to hold people accountable after Jan 6th. How many suspects have been arrested? How many are still at large? What’s the status of the person who tried to plant pipe bombs at the Republican and Democratic party headquarters on Jan 6. How many are in jail right now? Why are they being allowed to go to Mexico and Steelers Football games? How high is the justice department going? When will we finally see an Oath Keeper tried? What’s coming next? Scott breaks it all down. He’s the premier reporter covering with tremendous focus the single most important story in America. You can support this show and join our dynamic community of listeners by joining the IA Patreon community. Ep 138138. Matt Zeller. America’s Halloween Nightmare. 196 Americans Abandoned in Afghanistan. 23 Million Without Food. What is “Operation Resettle Allies''? Over the Horizon = Over the Rainbow. The “Disappointing Biden” Costume. The Real Winnie the Pooh Story.
Everyone who has seen a Halloween movie knows you can’t run from Michael Myers. The only way to defeat the terror of Michael Myers is to fight him--to take him head on. And the same is true about the horror show that is Afghanistan. If you run from the truth, it will chase you down, it will drag you down, it will cut you into little pieces, and it will come for your friends, and just keep coming. Like Michael Myers, the truth doesn't die. And the fight for it around Afghanistan won’t die either. Even if President Biden and countless partisan apologists and hacks look to defend themselves, rather than face the truth. Especially now, as they see Afghanistan continues to spiral downward, and pivotable Congressional midterms creep closer and closer---like Freddy Krueger, waiting for you to fall asleep. But there are people who are embracing the truth. Heroes that understand the truth. That have a unique link to the truth. That comprehend it’s origins, it’s history, it’s motivations, it’s trajectory. Like Jamie Lee Curtis had a mental bond with Michael Myer, there are leaders that know the truth is coming---even when others won’t believe it’s real. Sometimes, because it’s just too scary. Heroes like our guest in this episode. Like Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, he’s back! A man who can stand up to the scary, the brutal, the terrifying. Our friend, humanitarian, activist, superhero: Matt Zeller (@MattCZeller).Matt is America’s leading voice on the issue of American allies in Afghanistan. He’s an Combat veteran and Army major that made it out of Afghanistan alive only because of the courage of his Afghan interpreter. And he’s been paying it forward ever since. The courageous Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, Truman National Security Fellow author of Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan, and the newest member of the powerhouse team at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).Since he was last on this show for Episode 127 in August, Matt’s spent every day sounding the alarm about what’s coming, demanding action from the White house, rushing allies out of certain death, and serving as America’s conscience to ourselves and the world. He’s been on countless TV and radio shows around the world, and he’s somehow, still standing, still fighting. And he’s back. To tell us what’s really happening right now in Afghanistan--and why it’s the ultimate Halloween horror story. He’ll take us inside the White House spin, and the good things that HAVE happened. And take us behind the scenes on the Army bases around the country that are tasked with housing and resettling the thousands of Afghans that did make it out. And he’ll tell you how shockingly few that really is. You can support this show and join our dynamic community of listeners by joining the IA Patreon community. Ep 137137. Arian Moayed. Stewy from “Succession.” Why is “Succession” So Important? Kendall Roy is like the Taliban. Saying “No” to Playing a Terrorist. From Escaping Iran to Acting in Spiderman. Lessons Learned from Robin Williams. Remembering Colin Powell.
HBO’s Succession is a global phenomenon. And a reflection and exploration of our tumultuous times. And Arian Moayed (@ArianMoayed) is in the center of all of it. He is an actor, activist and American success story. A powerful creative force, a voice for the voiceless, and a key piece of the best show on television. Arian Moayed is the Iranian-born, award-winning actor and co-founder and Board Chair of Waterwell (@Waterwell), a civic-minded and socially conscious non-profit theater and education company. And he is one hell of an actor. He’s starred in The Humans, Guards at the Taj, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (alongside Robin Williams), an upcoming Shonda Rhimes series, Inventing Anna, in the newest Spiderman movie---Spider-Man: No Way Home- scheduled to be released in December, 2021 and the Emmy-winning super hit, Succession. At its core, Succession is about a fight for the soul of a company. A civil war pitting family member against family. And about a fight for the future. It’s about whether or not the next generation will be better than the last. That’s the core story of Succession. And right now, it’s also the core story of America. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) leads you behind the scenes for another candid conversation with an important, iconic and inspiring American. It’s a bold and blunt perspective you won’t find anywhere else on the media landscape. You can support this show and join our dynamic community of listeners by joining the IA Patreon community. Ep 136136. Jeremy Butler. Extremism in the Military and Veterans Community. Testifying Before Congress via Zoom. Race and the Military. The American Mental Health Crisis. Shatner in Space. Veterans Day 2021.
Fall is here, the leaves are changing, Halloween is just a few weeks away, it’s been 10 months since domestic terrorists tried to overthrow our government, and now is still a time to stay vigilant.Because while the world was focused on William Shatner and his trip to space, and on Jon Gruden’s inexcusable words that got him fired as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, or on Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix special, or on the major league baseball playoffs, there was a critical hearing happening in Washington about some of the most dangerous threats to that line that keeps America safe. It was a hearing that some didn't want to happen. They didn’t think it was important. They didn’t think it was urgent. They didn’t think it was necessary. But it was. At 10AM on Oct 13, 2021, 10 months after domestic terrorists attacked our Capitol, the House Committee on Veterans Affairs held a hearing entitled, "Domestic Violent Extremist Groups and the Recruitment of Veterans."Most Americans didn’t watch it. But it was damn important. And in this episode, we’ll dig into why. It’s up to all of us to stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. And one man paying that price is our guest in this episode. Navy Veteran, Navy Reserve Commander, and CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (@IAVA), and one of the most important voices in America: Jeremy Butler (@JeremyButler01). Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) takes you behind the scenes for candid conversations with top leaders from all backgrounds. Ep 135135. Milo Ventimiglia. Actor and Activist. From Vietnam to Afghanistan to This Is Us. A Whole New Reason Senator Joe Manchin Sucks. Hollywood’s Biggest Union Strikes. The Fight for the Global War on Terror Memorial. Celebrity Tourists in War Zones.
Milo Ventimiglia (@MiloVentimiglia) is an actor, director and producer. And one of the hottest stars in America. He’s also a really nice, hard-working and fascinating guy. And a guy with very strong opinions about everything from Afghanistan, to Senator Joe Manchin’s obstructionism, to a strike in Hollywood by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union. Milo is a fighter who stands up for what he believes in--not just in the roles he plays--but also in real life. And this is Milo the fighter as candid as you’ll ever hear him. After early recognition for roles with Sylverstor Stallone in Rocky Balboa, on Gilmore Girls and the NBC series Heroes, Milo went on to star as Jack Pearson in the massively popular NBC drama, This Is Us. Now, the humble son of a Vietnam vet is a household name. He has received three Emmy nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild Award. But over a decade before that, Ventimiglia toured Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan with the USO in support of US troops. And he’s done it multiple times since. Now, he’s using his star power to help veterans and to stand with working people. He’s supported veterans charities, and for the last month, has been making phone calls to US Senators to help a generation of men and women who’ve served since 9/11 create a Global War on Terror Memorial on The National Mall in Washington. Milo’s been a friend of our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for many years. They’ve worked together on issues, appeared together on political talk shows, and spent late nights hanging out in Hollywood getting pancakes. Milo shares the inside scoop on what’s to come on This Is Us, he’ll take us behind a red carpet with Nicole Kidman, and he’ll talk about creating a super action hero movie with past Independent Americans guests like, Bradley Whitford, Jeffrey Wright, Wes Chatham, Jon Bernthal, Jane Horton and Henry Rollins. You will be entertained. And inspired. It’s another conversation that keeps it real. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Ep 134134. Bradley Whitford. The Iconic Actor and Activist. The Handmaid’s Tale and The Taliban. Biden and Hollywood. What Would Commander Lawrence Do With Senators Sinema and Manchin? General Milley Under Fire. Is Afghanistan a “Strategic Failure”?
From The West Wing, to Get Out, to Transparent, to The Handmaid’s Tale. For a generation, Bradley Whitford (@BradleyWhitford) has shaped the world’s understanding of politics--through the lens of entertainment. But Bradley doesn’t just play politics. He lives it. At this precarious time in American history, art and politics are merging and colliding in powerful ways. He’s deeply involved in politics--and in causes he cares about. From climate change, to standing up for IATSE (the union that represents workers in film and television), Bradley’s a guy who cares deeply, and is not afraid to throw a punch. He’s earned three Emmys, been a figure in our film, TV and stage universe for a generation, and appeared in classics ranging from Adventures in Babysitting to Billy Madison to Scent of a Women to Revenge of the Nerds 2. After joining us way back in Episode 27 (one of our top episodes ever), the iconic actor and activist is back. This is a fun, wide-ranging and candid episode. This is Bradley Whitford and Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) chopping it up on all kinds of issues. Bradley takes you on set in Toronto and inside the Emmy Awards. It’s an insider’s look at Hollywood and politics at the highest levels. And another powerful conversation that’s about more than just politics, news and culture. It’s about America--and about all of us. Bradley talks about why The Handmaid’s Tale is so groundbreaking, about how Gilead is like Afghanistan, and about how he thinks Commander Lawrence would deal with Senators Krysten Cinema and Joe Manchin. We’ll also dig into his month in isolation in Canada, if he thought the Emmys this month should have been held inside during a pandemic, his Joe Biden in Hollywood story, and what he wants to clarify from his last visit to our show. It’s another conversation that keeps it real. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Ep 133133. Zainab Salbi. The War on Women In Afghanistan. The Reality of American Drone Strikes. Why Doesn’t Biden Get It? Recognizing The Taliban Is Like Gilead from Handmaid’s Tale. Women’s Rights Under Fire From Kabul to Texas. Finding Peace In Trying Times.
With Afghanistan now firmly in the hands of the Taliban, a full-scale war on women is underway inside that country. Women are being forcibly married, hunted, beaten and killed. Our President and many in Congress want to turn the page. But Zainab Salbi is on the front lines of the fight—and refuses to allow it. We continue the Independent Americans deep dive into Afghanistan and all the ways it’s impacting the world, national security and American politics, with a focus this episode on the 14 million women left to fight and die under Taliban rule. Zainab Salbi is an activist, author, Founder of Women for Women International, a renowned journalist. And she is a returning guest and audience favorite. She first appeared on this show in May 2019 and is back to break it down. Raised in Baghdad, Iraq, Zainab grew up as a small girl calling Saddam Hussein her uncle. Her father was Hussein’s private pilot and from an early age, Zainab was thrust into the small and twisted circle of the notorious dictator. She escaped an abusive arranged marriage with only $400 in her pocket and would go from working in a Hallmark store in Chicago to receiving honors from the President of the United States at the White House. She now is a best-selling author and one of the most powerful Muslim-American voices in media and politics.Zainab has dedicated her life to the cause of helping women everywhere. And there has been no more urgent crisis than this one. And with mounting tensions and issues for women everywhere reaching a boiling point, Zainab is the perfect voice for this moment. It’s another conversation that keeps it real. With tough lessons--and hard truths. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Ep 132132. Admiral Mike Mullen. The Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs on The Next 9/11, Gen. Milley’s Call to China, the Afghanistan Debacle. The Sept 18 Threat to Washington. Lessons Learned, Taking Accountability for Failure & Lady Gaga’s Giant Egg.
The 20th anniversary of 9/11 has now passed. Afghanistan remains a mess. The delta variant is ripping through thousands of unvaccinated lives. And there is new, looming domestic terrorism threat facing our Capitol this week. It’s all a painful reminder that our fun, vaccinated summer of 2021 is almost over. Fall is coming in fast. And it’s definitely a time to stay vigilant. There have been 46 Presidents of the United States. There have been only 20 Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And you’re about to hear from the best one of our lifetime. Mike Mullen is a man who might have made a hell of a president. Mostly, because he never wanted to be one. But he’s also a man who almost became a candidate for Vice President of the United States. And not as a Republican or a Democrat, but as an independent. Independent Americans is continuing our unique, independent focus on the most urgent threats facing America. And exploring how they’re all intertwined. And how we can pull them part--and fight them together. From 9/11, to the pandemic, to January 6th, to the debacle in Afghanistan, to the threats of domestic extremism--they’re all a test of the fabric of our nation. And they all are made worse by how badly that fabric has been weakened since 9/11. Is 2021 America what Osama Bin Laden would have dreamed of? 650,000 Americans dead, our international reputation in shambles, our politics paralyzed, our people divided, and literally, killing each other. Just like 20 years ago this week, we have a choice to make. Do we stand with America and a brighter future? Or do we stand with the enemies, and the darkness that will extinguish the bright glow of the shining city on the hill? It’s another conversation that keeps it real. With tough lessons--and hard truths. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. We’re bringing the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. We’re going from last episode with the truth from a firefighter who stood on the pile, to this episode with the truth from the admiral, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, who was the senior military leader in the Situation Room, standing behind President Obama, watching the Bin Laden raid unfold on May 1, 2011. Admiral Mullen has been America’s bodyguard. He was also the boss of every single man and woman in uniform who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.Welcome to a fireside chat with a true guardian of our democracy. An exploration of leadership--with a true patriot. A sailor, an Admiral, a warrior, a scholar...and maybe most importantly of all now, a grandfather. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) takes you behind the scenes for candid conversations with top leaders from all backgrounds. Ep 131131. Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). 9/11 SPECIAL. Did America Forget? First-Responder Health Issues. The Great American Betrayal of Afghanistan. Professor Rieckhoff Goes Back to School. The Firefighters Podcast. Hockey Heroes Take Over MSG.
Never forget is the mantra of 9/11. It was on bumper stickers, repeated by Presidents, and hashtagged for two decades now. Twenty years later, has America forgotten? Have we forgotten the lessons of 9/11? Have we forgotten what happened that day? Have we forgotten all that happened after? Have we forgotten about the public officials who said the air was clear at Ground Zero, the islamophobic attacks that happened across america, the rapid passage of the Patriot Act, the people snatched off streets and sent to GitMo without trail, the push for an invasion without a declaration of war, the rapid passage of the Authorization for Use of Military Force that allowed the unchecked expansion of Presidential power and the authority to conduct a forever war? Have we forgotten the unity? Have we forgotten the humanity? Have we forgotten the lessons? From the bitter divisions around COVID, to the Capitol attack on January 6th, to the betrayal of Afghanistan, to the thousand of 9/11 first responders and survivors left alone to die from health impacts without help to this day...20 years after 9/11, it often feels like we’ve forgotten. And many in power, would like to keep it that way. But as keepers of the 9/11 flame, our First-Responder host, Paul Rieckhoff, and his heroic guest consider it their responsibility to try to make sure America never forgets. Host Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is a leader who can never forget. For over 10 years, he’s been one of America’s leading advocates for firefighters and first-responders. Rob was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and his first day in the field was September 11th. Along with thousands of others, he reported to the World Trade Center to help with the aftermath of the attacks. And now he’s the host of his own groundbreaking new podcast, powered by Righteous Media, called The Firefighters Podcast with Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). It’s the hottest podcast in America, literally. The show will feature interviews with firefighters and first responders, celebrities, and the always popular and delicious Firehouse cooking segment. Everybody loves firefighters. Now they have a podcast! And Rob is joining us exclusively to share more. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) first hosted Rob on this show way back in Episode #2--over two years ago. And this new conversation with Rob is as moving and as real as it gets. Parts of it are hard to hear, but you shouldn’t turn away. Ep 130130. Congressman Peter Meijer. THE END OF THE AFGHANISTAN WAR? Not for the Afghans. 13 US Troops Killed. Our Allies Left to Die. Biden Spikes the Ball. The Great American Betrayal of Afghanistan. Is the Future of the GOP Peter Meijer or Donald Trump?
After 20 years, all US troops are now out of Afghanistan. Is that a good thing? Is the war really over? What happens now to our Afghan allies left behind? Will there be any accountability for failure in Washington? After gripping episodes with Matt Zeller, Jane Horton and Kristen Rouse, the newest episode is keeping our focus squarely on Afghanistan. The military pieces, media coverage, political spin, humanitarian need, the human story--we’re digging into all of what is happening right now.Our guest has been there. He’s a leader for this moment. He just returned from a controversial, unauthorized visit to Afghanistan made alongside fellow veteran and Democrat Congressman Seth Moulton. And he’ll take us inside what he saw. Representative Peter Meijer is a freshman Republican Congressman who succeeded Republican maverick Justin Amash, in the seat representing Michigan’s 3rd district. He’s fighting for Afghans, he’s fighting partisanship, he’s fighting his own party, and he’s fighting for real change. After high school, Peter enlisted in the Army reserves and deployed to Iraq with an intelligence unit. After returning, Peter joined Team Rubicon, a veteran-based disaster response organization led by Episode 107 Guest Jake Wood where Peter led humanitarian efforts focused on South Sudan’s refugee crisis. He also led operations in New York after Superstorm Sandy, Oklahoma after a series of tornadoes, and the Philippines after Super Typhoon Yolanda. Peter then accepted a job with a non-governmental organization in Afghanistan. He ran the NGO’s advisory operations in southern Afghanistan, managing a team to help aid workers provide relief to Afghan people. He later served as acting Deputy Director for Afghanistan, delivering emergency assistance to aid workers after kidnappings and targeted killings. Peter knows Afghanistan, knows national security, knows humanitarian work. And he knows this moment. And you need to hear what he knows. He’s fighting for Afghan allies, for accountability around failures of the last month, and for his fellow veterans. He is also fighting with his own party. He was one of only 10 Republicans in the House to vote for the impeachment of Donald Trump. And he’s fighting now to repeal the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force), for the truth inside what happened on the January 6th insurrection--and for the soul of the Republican party. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) has known Peter for over a decade. He digs deep with Pete and breaks down the latest news from a truly independent viewpoint. Ep 116116: Sebastian Junger. FREEDOM. The Iconic Author on His Must-Read New Book, Memorial Day, Losing His Close Friend in Combat, Walking Across America, Almost Dying, President Biden, the Soul of America, Smoking Cigarettes and Getting Shot At.
Sebastian Junger is one of the most important authors, thinkers and public intellectuals in America. And one of the most interesting guys you’ll ever hear. He’s also a true badass and adventurer—the spirit of Hemingway—who joined us in Episode 100 and is back to talk candidly about his highly-anticipated, sure-to-be-best-selling new book, Freedom. Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily: we value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian examines this tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human.Over a year, Sebastian and three friends—a combat photographer and two War vets—walked the railroad lines of America. It was an experiment in personal autonomy, but also in interdependence. Dodging railroad cops, sleeping under bridges, cooking over fires and drinking from creeks and rivers, the men forged a unique reliance on one another.Junger weaves his account of this journey together with primatology and boxing strategy, the history of labor strikes and Apache raiders, the role of women in resistance movements, and the brutal reality of life on the Pennsylvania frontier. Written in exquisite, razor-sharp prose, the result is a powerful examination of the primary desire that defines us.Junger is the #1 NY Times Bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, Fire, A Death In Belmont, War and Tribe and the visionary filmmaker behind Restrepo, Korengal and Which Way Is The Front Line From Here? He is also the Founder of RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues)--a non-profit dedicated to promoting the safety of freelance journalists working in conflict zones. Sebastian has been in the toughest war zones all over the world--and told stories about what happens in war and what happens after. He’s a defender of democracy. A keeper of the flame. And a conscience for America. He again joins our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for a real and extended conversation that will leave you informed and inspired. Rieckhoff also presses Sebastian to share the pieces of the book he left out, the time he almost died, what he’s looking forward to this summer and, as with all returning guests--pancakes v waffles. It’s amazing conversation to inspire--and to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Especially this summer. Independent Americans is a summer BBQ of light to contrast all the stinky heat of other political pods. Ep 115115. Molly McKew. Unpacking Cyber Attacks Hitting America--from SolarWinds to the Colonial Pipeline. Who is DarkSide? What Will Hackers Hit Next? Congress Votes To Investigate the Insurrection. Lollapalooza, Talladega & T-ball.
We’re finally winning the war against the coronavirus. But what about the next war? While many in Congress want you to breeze past the pandemic failures, or the failures to stop a predictable and preventable insurrection attack, new attacks are happening right now. And have been happening for years. And as the summer comes and Americans get less vigilant, our enemies are attacking. Russian-backed hackers attacked our 2016 election. Last year, more Russian-backed hackers executed the SolarWinds attack that hit nine federal agencies and over 100 companies--including thirty-seven defense companies. They even hit the office at the Department of Homeland Security that is supposed to protect federal computer systems from cyberattacks. And this month, Colonial Pipeline got hit. A company that transports hundreds of millions of gallons of gasoline from Texas to New York got hacked by ransomware that shut down the pipeline and sent gas prices soaring. Ep 114114. Wes Chatham. How The Expanse in 2350 is Like America in 2021. One of the Greatest Denzel Stories You’ll Ever Hear. From Navy Petty Officer Third Class to Hollywood Badass. Drinking vs Smoking. Liz Cheney vs the GOP. FORs (Friends of Ron Perlman).
“Liz Cheney is 1 of only 10 Republican House members who voted to impeach President Mayhem over his role in inciting the deadly January 6 insurrection and attack on America at our Capitol. And never forget--even as time passes--almost 6 months later--it was an insurrection. It was an attack on America. But too many in the media are still weakly mincing words and calling the events of January 6 a "riot". It wasn't a riot. It was an attack on our Capitol. It was an insurrection. Stand up, have a spine, and call it what it is. Or find another line of work. The American people need and deserve the truth.”As always, with an important focus on national security and military issues, our politically independent host, activist, author and combat veteran, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is ripping through the most important news impacting America’s future. And our guest in this episode is a man of the future. About 300 years in the future. Wes Chatham (@WesChatham) is a break-out star in the incredibly popular worldwide sensation that is Amazon’s Sci-Fi series, The Expanse. He is also a Navy veteran that got his big break when a major motion picture starring one of the biggest stars in the world paid a visit to the ship he was serving on as a lowly Petty Officer Third Class. Wes was chosen for a small part in a big film--and that twist of fate catapulted a blazing hot acting career that has included roles in Barbershop, The Unit, The Help, In The Valley of Elah and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay--Part 1 and 2. But he’s no Hollywood snob. Wes is a proudly married father of two young boys who still calls rural Georgia home. He’s a guy who loves his country, loves a good story, and loves what he does. He’s also a great American success story--who’s story is still unfolding. We’ll talk about his journey, fatherhood, the future, drinking vs smoking--and of course, his favorite drink and first car. Which WILL NOT disappoint you. Just like Amos Burton (the iconic character he plays in The Expanse) Wes’ stories deliver a punch. It’s another conversation to inspire--and to help you stay vigilant. Because eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.Independent Americans is continuing to deliver light to contrast the heat of other political pods. We’re bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And a conversation to test you---to enlighten you---and to help you stay vigilant. Ep 113113: Ruben Gallego. Congressman & USMC Veteran. Inside The Capitol On January 6th. Political Mortal Kombat. Majorie Taylor Greene Calls Him a “Coward.” Protecting Allies in Afghanistan. Will He Run Against Sen Kyrsten Sinema? Biden is AWOL on Burn Pits.
Mortal Kombat is a new movie based on the old video game. And now, it’s the #1 film in America. If you don’t know, it’s about fighting. And it’s also the state of affairs in Washington. In 2021, every day in Congress is a kind of mortal combat. But the violence and fighting in Washington that we’ve seen in the last year--and on the January 6th attack--is not the first violence American has seen in the Capitol. It’s just the first seen by this generation. Our host, activist, author and combat veteran, Paul Rieckhoff ( @PaulRieckhoff), breaks down the history, context and what could happen next. And he talks to Arizona Congressman and Marine Corps infantry combat veteran, Ruben Gallego (@RubenGallego). Gallego has been a political combatant in the news a ton lately. He was inside the US Capitol during the attack on January 6th, helping his colleagues put on their gas masks and prepare to fight for their lives. He’s been slamming Republican leadership, serving on the House Armed Services Committee, leading the charge to get veterans healthcare for burn pits and other toxin exposure, and clashing with controversial Republican Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Green. Taylor Green called Gallego a “coward” and Tweeted “Democrats are the enemy within.” Gallego fired back, Tweeting “"I was trying to figure what type of pen to stab your friends with if they overran us on the floor of the House of Representatives while trying to conduct a democratic transition of power. So please shut your seditious, Qanon loving mouth when it comes to who loves America," It’s just another week of fireworks in Washington in 2021. But it’s also almost Mother’s Day--and Independent Americans is bringing light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We’re bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And a conversation to test you---to enlighten you---and to help you stay vigilant. Ep 112112: Paul Begala. America Is Bouncing Off Bottom. Are Democrats Winning or Losing? Biden’s Address & First 100 Days. The Future of Independent Politics. Can Matthew McConaughey Win in Texas? Guns or Shovels. Are Dems Too Woke? Cursing, Drinking & Twitter.
“Thank you for your patience.” That’s how President Biden ended his historic and unusual address to the joint session of Congress. After all we’ve been through over the last four years. And after the last year especially, America was in the roughest place of our lifetime. And we hit rock bottom on January 6, 2021. That was the low point of our lifetime. And damn, it was low. But America is now bouncing off bottom. And Biden’s speech laid it out. 100 days are down. The pandemic is on the run. Trump is off the radar. The vaccines are here. The jobs are coming back. The masks are coming down. And hope is in the air. And our host, Paul Rieckhoff ( @PaulRieckhoff), breaks it all down. How Biden’s plan will help combat domestic extremism, how he’s making the smartest and most transformative education investment in America since the GI Bill, and what happens now in Afghanistan. We’re not back yet. But America is on the comeback. And gaining steam fast. But it’s up to all of us to finish the job. But how do we do that? Can our politics do that? Can the Democrats do that? Can the Republicans be a part of that? Are independents the key? We’ve got the perfect guest for this moment. One of the most influential and impactful political strategists of our time. Paul Begala (@PaulBegala) is a guy who knows about bouncing back. He knows about what it takes. He’s been in the war room. And he understands what it means to bounce off bottom. He led a then Presidential candidate in one of the biggest bouncing off bottom campaigns in history.Begala was a chief strategist for the 1992 Clinton–Gore campaign, making Clinton the first Democrat to occupy the White House in twelve years. As counselor to Clinton, he coordinated policy, politics, and communications. And later, Begala gained national prominence as part of the political consulting team Carville and Begala, along with fellow Clinton advisor James Carville. They’ve been the Batman and Robin of Democratic politics in America for decades. Begala’s also been a fixture in political media. He was a co-host of Equal Time on MSNBC with Oliver North, and a co-host on CNN’s Crossfire with Tucker Carlson. Begala now appears regularly on CNN and is a Professor at Georgetown University. He’s also a patriotic American. A gun owner. A farmer. A lover of beer. A bigger lover of Texas. And a very proud husband and father of four boys. And in his own way, even partisan Begala is an independent American. He delivers a fun and motivating master class on current American politics. And shares stories and insights from a fascinating life in the mix. And how we can all be a part of the great American recovery.Independent Americans is bringing light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We’re bringing the power of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And a conversation to test you---to enlighten you---and to help you stay vigilant. Ep 111111. Baratunde Thurston. Derek Chauvin is Guilty. Analyzing Media Coverage of the Trial. How The Hell Do We Process All This? The George Floyd Murder is the Mỹ Lai Massacre of Policing. Going to High School with Jon Bernthal.
The biggest verdict of or time is in and Officer Derek Chauvin is guilty of murder. Is America guilty of celebrating too much? Is this a turning point--or just a one-off? Did American political leaders do enough? What are the parallels between the 2020 George Floyd murder video and 2002 beheading video of journalist Daniel Pearl? What happens next?Baratunde Thurston (@Baratunde) is back to help us break it all down. The dynamic activist, host of the popular podcast How to Citizen, and author of the bestseller, How To Be Black joined us a year ago for Episode 59. And he rejoins the show now in the midst of a barnstorming tour across the American media landscape that has spanned from Conan to a weekly segment on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour with Brian Williams. He joins his old friend, our host, Independent activist, author, social entrepreneur and Army veteran @PaulRieckhoff for a fascinating, rapid-fire and riveting conversation. Baratunde is a powerful, inspiring and dynamic next-generation thought leader. Ep 110110. Jon Bernthal. The Iconic Actor Gets Real About America at a Crossroads. Defining Toughness, and Insurrectionist Using The Punisher Skull. George Floyd, Fatherhood, Sativa, DMX, Pitbulls. Biden's Afghanistan Drawdown.
President Biden has declared the war in Afghanistan over. The George Floyd murder case continues to unfold. Coronavirus variants are spreading fast. And the J & J vaccine is on pause. It’s still a tough time in America. 100 days into the Biden presidency, things remain pretty damn turbulent. And Americans are still deeply divided. But millions are vaccinated, our troops are coming home from the longest war in our history, and summer will be here soon. And we are finally looking back on the last few very tough years, and trying to chart a better course forward. That includes exploring what it means to be a leader, to be a citizen, to be a patriot, and to be tough. Far too often in America lately, tough has been defined by a fist. But some are trying to redefine toughness with an open hand--instead of a clenched one. With soft power, instead of hard. And most of all, with an open heart. As we all process the brutal drama of the last year, we’re all exploring what it means to be survivors of this life, this time, and his pandemic. And we’re all at least a little bit tougher. And few have defined American toughness on our screens over the last decade like Jon Bernthal (@JohnnyBernthal). And few define toughness better in real life. After growing up DC, facing down tremendous adversity, and grinding for two decades, Jon has now emerged as one of the most dynamic and exciting actors in Hollywood. America has come to love him in defining roles on The Walking Dead, The Pacific, The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Sicario, Baby Driver and Ford v Ferrari. And as Frank Castle, in The Punisher. Soon, he’ll star in The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel of The Sopranos, the reboot of American Gigolo on Showtime, and King Richard, a story about the early days of Venus and Serena Williams. Bernthal’s one of the hardest-working actors in America. He’s also one of the coolest--and one of the most real. He’s married to a nurse, dedicated to his family, and worked for causes ranging from the USO to protecting pitbulls to founding Drops Fill Buckets. Bernthal’s a guy who shaped what it means to be American to the world. And he joins us on Independent Americans for a raw and real conversation spanning the debate around statehood for DC, to the George Floyd trial, to the insurrection in his hometown. Bernthal (a boxer) pulls no punches. He’s known our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for 20 years. And he opens up about what makes him happy, the impact of DMX on his life, and why he’s optimistic about the future..America is deeply divided. But not about the things Jon’s been a part of. And Independent Americans is killing misinformation like Shane Walsh killed zombies in The Walking Dead. And we're bringing a punishing Frank-Castle-like blast of light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. We're bringing the Fury of the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Ep 109109. Ethan Nadelmann. Pre-4/20 Marijuana Special Episode. New York Legalizes Cannabis. Should All Drugs Be Legal? Can Weed Spark America’s Post-Pandemic Economic Recovery?
The marijuana reform movement is on fire. In the election last year, beneath all the Biden and Trump drama, every single state-level cannabis ballot initiative passed--from New Jersey to Mississippi to South Dakota. And now, New York state has legalized the green stuff. Federal legalization is gaining steam, the industry is exploding and everyone wants in on the weed movement. Marijuana is no longer a partisan or fringe issue--it’s popular, mainstream and key to the future of the American economy post-pandemic. And it’s got tremendous support from most independent Americans. 7 in 10 independents and moderates back legalization. So as 4/20 (the unofficial marijuana holiday) nears, Independent Americans is sparking up the cannabis conversation again--and continuing our focus on the state of affairs, the controversies, and the future of cannabis. And we’re also digging into broader drug policy changes happening in America from opioids to psychedelics to criminal justice reform. And so The Godfather of Drugs returns to IA! Ethan Nadelmann (@EthanNadelmann) has been called America’s real Drug Czar. He joined us way back in Episode 12--and he’s back again to bring his unparalleled insight and experience. Ethan has been the mastermind behind the biggest changes to drug policy in US history. A Harvard PhD and the son of a rabbi, Ethan founded the trailblazing Drug Policy Alliance in 1994 and was a lead strategist behind 30 years of reform--including California’s historic 2014 Prop 47 referendum that reduced drug possession for personal use to a misdemeanor. This pivotal political victory proved to be the first domino to fall in a string of historic national changes and unleashed the wave of legalization of marijuana in states all across America we see now—with more to come soon.Easter and Passover are behind us, March Madness is over, the vaccine is hitting millions of arms daily, and things are warming up nationwide. But few issues are heating up more than cannabis. And few have a more fascinating past--or a more exciting future.Ethan returns to Independent Americans to chop it up with our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) to break it all down. Rieckhoff is a longtime advocate for drug reform, who has appeared in the media often on the subject, written about it extensively, testified before Congress about the impacts of cannabis for veterans, and spearheaded the landmark VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act of 2018.America is deeply divided. But not about marijuna anymore. And Independent Americans is packing a bowl of light to contrast all the heat of other political pods. Every show is pre-rolled with the Righteous Media 5 I’s: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact--to keep you empowered.
