Ep 57Krissy Wejebe - Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation
I recently sat down with Krissy Wejebe, daughter of the Spanish Fly tv host Jose Wejebe, at ICAST. And on this episode, we talked about what it was like growing up in Florida with a dad that was a fishing guide/tv host and a mother who was a dolphin trainer. Jose meant a lot to so many people and when he passed away, it left a lot of people asking what they could do to help. Soon after, Krissy started up the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Memorial Foundation to continue her father's legacy through conservation work, education and providing fishing opportunities to those in need. Since 2012, the foundation has worked on countless projects and provided amazing fishing trips for those battling illness bringing hope and "normalcy" to their lives. Ep 54Britt Perry - The Art of Falconry
Falconry was something I had only heard of but never really looked into as far as a way of hunting game. Until meeting Britt Perry, I really didn't know it was a legit and very proficient way of hunting game. Britt's introduction into the sport is probably not what one would expect, but through seeing a post from a friend of a friend of a friend on social one day, she got interested in it and started looking into what it would take to get started. And that was all it took! 5 years later, she is a dedicated falconer and successfully capturing birds in the wild and guiding/training them to associate her with food rewards and in turn doing what all raptors do best. HUNT! This was a really fun episode to record, and I learned a lot about this side of the hunting world. So be sure to listen in as we discuss all things falconry from getting started to where she is today, and all the great conservation work Britt is currently doing as a biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation over in Louisiana. This non-profit group has chapters all across the country and has been getting our heroes out on the water since 2007 when founder Jim Dolan started up the group. Through his amazing work over his career in the outdoor conservation world with SCI, Dallas Safari Club and now as the President and CEO of the Wild Sheep Foundation, Gray is helping to put wild sheep back on the mountain. Facing such a tremendous decline and numerous other issues, the Wild Sheep Foundation has stepped up to the plate through the support of hunters, researchers and numerous state agencies to help put these majestic animals back where they belong. Please join us as Gray and I go through the history of the wild sheep and we learn about the research and reintroduction of these animals back into their native ranges. Ep 47Julian Hibbard - The chances we take in life - Teacher Appreciation Special
Growing up as a kid in Oklahoma, I never really thought about going overseas to a foreign country or really even traveling out of Oklahoma for that matter. Not until having Julian Hibbard as my Geography teacher in 7th grade, where she asked me to come and take her German class the following year. Frau, as we called her, is recently retired from a 30 plus year career in teaching and I recently got back in touch with her after almost 24 years. During our 8th grade German class, she asked a few students if they would be willing to travel to Germany for a couple of weeks for a tour of the country. The decision to go on this trip has totally changed my life for the better and has opened up so many doors and opportunities for me that I could not even begin to list them all here. Join us for this great conversation about chances you take in life, a look back at her career and the challenges facing teachers in today's environment. Most of all, thanks to all the teachers out there going above and beyond daily for our youth to educate and inspire them to take those chances in life! Ep 45Renée Thornton - Women Hunt
Renee Thornton is leading the charge with the Women Hunt program, part of the Wild Sheep Foundation. With women being the fastest growing part of the hunting industry, the need for something to help open the doorway for women across North America and provide opportunities to involve new hunters to learn from experts and give them the knowledge and tools to go back into their communities and share with others was a huge reason for the start of this program. Renee's personal experiences getting into hunting later in life and knowing she needed a good mentor to be a successful and ethical hunter, has led her down a path to be able to share what she has learned. This was such a great conversation about a lot of different topics within the sport of hunting. Marco Schoonwinkel was born and raised in South Africa, a land full of wildlife and a diverse culture that depends on tourism to support its economy. Recently, at the Houston Safari Club Expo I got to meet Marco and we sat down to record this episode. I've never been to Africa, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about what to expect when going on a safari for the first time, discuss the common misperceptions of people about hunting there and how emotion plays such a powerful, yet misinformed role in what people think about Africa as a whole. Lots of people struggle with making decisions and trying to figure out who to go fishing with when booking a guided fishing trip can be intimidating. When I met Jonathan and Attison earlier this year, it was clear to me they were in it for the right reasons and really wanted to help people book the right kind of trip and the best guide to fit their needs. Captain Experiences was born during one of the craziest years in recent memory and became a huge success with now over 350 guides to book across the country. Ep 29Todd Craighead - Mr. Outdoor Oklahoma
Growing up in Oklahoma, all I ever wanted to do was fish when possible. The next best thing was watching fishing shows on tv, but even better than that was watching Outdoor Oklahoma on PBS and see places in my own state. This show meant a lot to me and really opened my eyes up to what all Oklahoma has to offer outdoors. Fast forward 25+ years later and I'm turkey hunting with Todd Craighead, host of Outdoor Oklahoma down here in Texas at the 1st Hunt Fish Podcast summit. I had reached out to Todd and invited him down as one of our guests and he gladly accepted. I already knew Todd was an an amazing individual, accomplished hunter and passionate about helping others, but spending some time with him down here really showed me and everyone else what a true "Oklahoma" treasure Todd is and how big of an impact he has made in so many lives. Ep 27Erin Merrill - Making an impact through writing, hunting and spreading conservation
Erin Merrill never truly hunted until she was in her twenties, but that doesn't mean she wasn't in the woods chasing deer with her dad growing up in the woods of Maine. Erin is currently one of the premier outdoors writers working for Drury Outdoors as a senior writer for DeerCast, writing a monthly column in Northwoods Sporting Journal and President and co-founder of "Women of the Maine Outdoors" where she is leading the way in enabling women and young girls in getting involved in the outdoors. This was a great conversation about a lot of what is going on in Maine currently with all the different species that are available to hunters and with public/private land hunting rights. We also chatted about the wild turkey populations and how they are doing so well that now they are sending birds all the way down here to Texas to be stocked into rebuilding populations of Easterns. I met Bill probably 7 years ago as I went to my first NWTF chapter meeting at the Harris County Wildlife Group. Bill is owner of Crowell Custom Calls, located here in Houston and produces some of the best looking and sounding calls for turkeys, deer, waterfowl and more. I sat down with Bill recently and had a great conversation about his long career working in the Air Force, the space program and with McDonald-Douglas. Ep 23Al McGlashan - Passion Turned Profession in the Land Down Under
Growing up I always dreamed of going to Australia one day. It was like looking at another world. All the fish and wildlife that lives there, the amazing landscape and of course, Mick Dundee! It is still on the top of my list to visit one day and I will go hopefully sooner, than later. A few years ago, I was flipping through Netflix and came across a show called Fishin with Mates hosted by Al McGlashan. This show was great! Amazing fishing locations across the world, great guests and just a fun show to watch. Little did I know, but a year later I would run into Al at ICAST in Florida and we struck up a great conversation and have stayed in touch ever since. Al is one of the premier photographers in the world and specializes in underwater footage. His shots have graced the covers and spreads of countless magazines over the last 20 years. Besides the photography, Al has been a leader in outdoor television in Australia and has become a true ambassador for the recreational fishermen in standing up for strong conservation management of the fisheries. Ep 22Chris Fischer and Brett McBride of OCEARCH - Just Two Guys Saving the Ocean
Thanks to Chris and Brett, my passion for the saltwater environment was pushed to another level with their show Offshore Adventures that aired for 10 seasons on ESPN with over 180 episodes. This show highlighted the vast diversity of fish, ways to catch them, incredible culinary creations and the countless unique locations and people all across the globe that the team traveled to. During the last few years of filming this show, Chris and Brett were already helping scientists with research on billfish and other pelagics swimming the ocean when the guys purchased a new vessel and realized they could do the impossible. Give access to Great White Sharks to researchers that had never been achieved before. With the transition to shark research, OCEARCH was born and Chris and Brett have never looked back. With over 30 expeditions all across the world tagging numerous sharks, multiple research projects being conducted on each tagging event, the global Shark Tracker app and an extensive STEM educational program, OCEARCH has already accomplished so much and is answering questions we thought would never be answered about the Great White sharks' biology, range and reproductive cycles. Oscar Castillo, native Texan from San Antonio, grew up like so many other kids. Fishing and playing outside, but the outdoors really sparked an interest for him and kept him wanting to spend more and more time outdoors. This has continued through today, but several years ago, he and his friends seen the need to do something for their local communities by way of fishing. Countless fishing trips across Texas, both in fresh and saltwater, sparked an idea of bringing that possibility to those that had no way of paying or getting to those far away locations. The Fin Addict Angler Foundation was born out of this need and is one of the most active angler education non-profits in the U. Ep 19Tonya Wiley of Havenworth Coastal Conservation - Saving Sawfish
What the heck is a sawfish and why have I never seen or heard of one before? These are questions that I had the first time I ever heard of this prehistoric looking animal. Tonya Wiley didn't grow up knowing she would play such a vital role in saving sawfish, but an early introduction into the saltwater environment sparked a passion for conservation that can still be seen today even as we record this podcast. Working in the fisheries field for over 20 years, Tonya is one of the leading experts in the world on sawfish. And in this episode, you'll learn about the two species that once lived in relative abundance until commercial fishing and the absence of any real conservation measures drove one of the species to extinction and the other to be found in very limited numbers in a small area. Tonya is helping lead the way in sawfish research and helping us understand how we can save not only sawfish but other species that are being threatened even today due to lack of knowledge and regulations. S1 Ep 15Nick "Sunshine" Tokman - Chasing his dreams to the Bering Sea and beyond
The first time I spoke with Nick Tokman it was evident why people call him Sunshine. He is upbeat, outgoing and everything you would expect for somebody with that nickname. Nick had a wild ride taking the risk and leaving it all behind and heading to Alaska without a job with the goal of becoming a crab fishermen like the ones his grandfather showed him on Deadliest Catch. Battling the Bering Sea head on with such a positive audience, Nick showed viewers how having such an upbeat can-do attitude during the grind that is Alaska crab fishing can have such a huge impact on his crewmates. So after leaving the show, Nick decided to become a motivational speaker and travel the country delivering his message of confidence, self worth and helping you reach "your" goals. S1 Ep 13National Pediatric Cancer Foundation
A couple of years ago I found out about the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and how vital their mission is to helping save kids' lives that are battling cancer. When I found out how they were doing this and that fishing was involved, I was HOOKED! I never knew the struggle that these kids were facing, even with all of the millions of dollars put toward researching the disease, that there were really no drugs developed specifically for kids. They were really only being treated with drugs developed for adults battling cancer, which causes a high percentage of them to have life long complications. How could this be??? I immediately knew I wanted to be involved and when I found out that I could take some people out fishing and help this cause, that was the icing on the cake! The NPCF has been around since 1991 and growing nationally with the help of people like you and me through various fundraising efforts across the country. My good friends Shamus Warren and Chris Geib join us on this episode to talk about the NPCF, how to get involved, growing up in the outdoors and share some powerful stories along the way from their time with the foundation.
